   Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

   Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

   And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

   וְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/KHOL-yis/ra/ELand all Israelשָׁמְעוּsha/me/Uheardלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingהִכָּהhik/KAhas struckשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶת־נְצִיבet-ne/TSIVthe garrison ofפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesוְגַם־נִבְאַשׁve/GAM-niv/ASHand also has become odiousיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelבַּפְּלִשְׁתִּיםbap/Pe/lish/TIMby the Philistinesוַיִּצָּעֲקוּvay/yits/tsa/a/KUand were called togetherהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulהַגִּלְגָּל׃hag/Gil/GALto Gilgal

   And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

   And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven.

   וְאִישׁve/ISHwhen the men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelרָאוּra/Usawכִּיkithatצַר־לוֹtsar-lothey were in distressכִּיkiforנִגַּשׂnig/GASwere hard pressedהָעָםha/AMthe peopleוַיִּתְחַבְּאוּvay/yit/chab/be/Uthen hid themselvesהָעָםha/AMthe peopleבַּמְּעָרוֹתbam/me/a/ROTin the cavesוּבַחֲוָחִיםu/va/cha/va/CHIMand in thicketsוּבַסְּלָעִיםu/vas/se/la/IMand in rocksוּבַצְּרִחִיםu/vats/tse/ri/CHIMand in strongholdsוּבַבֹּרוֹת׃u/vab/bo/ROTand in pits

   When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

   וְעִבְרִיםve/Iv/RIMand Hebrewsעָבְרוּa/ve/RUwent overאֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּןet-Hay/yar/DENthe JordanאֶרֶץE/retsto the land ofגָּדGadGadוְגִלְעָדve/Gil/ADand Gileadוְשָׁאוּלve/Sha/ULbut Saulעוֹדֶנּוּo/DEN/nuhe was stillבַגִּלְגָּלVag/gil/GALin Gilgalוְכׇל־הָעָםve/KHOL-ha/AMand all the peopleחָרְדוּcha/re/DUfollowed tremblingאַחֲרָיו׃a/cha/RAYVafter him

   And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

   (וייחל)vayayachal[וַיּוֹחֶל]vay/YO/cheland he waitedשִׁבְעַתshiv/ATsevenיָמִיםya/MIMdaysלַמּוֹעֵדlam/mo/EDaccording to the time set byאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelוְלֹא־בָאve/LO-vabut did not comeשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelהַגִּלְגָּלhag/Gil/GALto Gilgalוַיָּפֶץvay/YA/fetsand were scatteringהָעָםha/AMthe peopleמֵעָלָיו׃me/a/LAYVfrom him

   And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulהַגִּשׁוּhag/GI/shubring hereאֵלַיe/LAYto meהָעֹלָהha/o/LAthe burnt offeringוְהַשְּׁלָמִיםve/hash/she/la/MIMand the peace offeringsוַיַּעַלvay/YA/aland he offeredהָעֹלָה׃ha/o/LAthe burnt offering

   And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passכְּכַלֹּתוֹke/khal/lo/TOas he finishedלְהַעֲלוֹתle/ha/a/LOTofferingהָעֹלָהha/o/LAthe burnt offeringוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelבָּאbacameוַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulלִקְרָאתוֹlik/ra/TOto meet himלְבָרְכוֹ׃le/va/re/KHOto greet him

    And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelמֶהmewhatעָשִׂיתָa/SI/tahave you doneוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulכִּי־רָאִיתִיki-ra/I/tibecause I sawכִי־נָפַץkhi-na/FATSthat were scatteringהָעָםha/AMthe peopleמֵעָלַיme/a/LAYfrom meוְאַתָּהve/at/TAand youלֹא־בָאתָlo-VA/tadid not comeלְמוֹעֵדle/mo/EDwithin the appointedהַיָּמִיםhay/ya/MIMdaysוּפְלִשְׁתִּיםu/Fe/lish/TIMand the Philistinesנֶאֱסָפִיםne/e/sa/FIMwere gathering atמִכְמָשׂ׃Mikh/MASMichmash

    And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

    וָאֹמַרva/o/MARand I saidעַתָּהat/TAnowיֵרְדוּyer/DUwill come downפְלִשְׁתִּיםFe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesאֵלַיe/LAYagainst meהַגִּלְגָּלhag/Gil/GALto Gilgalוּפְנֵיu/fe/NEthe face ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDלֹאlonotחִלִּיתִיchil/LI/tiI have entreatedוָאֶתְאַפַּקva/et/ap/PAKso I forced myselfוָאַעֲלֶהva/a/a/LEand offeredהָעֹלָה׃ha/o/LAthe burnt offering

    Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelאֶל־שָׁאוּלel-Sha/ULto Saulנִסְכָּלְתָּnis/KAL/tayou have done foolishlyלֹאlonotשָׁמַרְתָּsha/MAR/tayou have keptאֶת־מִצְוַתet-mits/VATthe commandment ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָe/lo/HE/khayour Godאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichצִוָּךְtsiv/VAKHHe commanded youכִּיkiforעַתָּהat/TAnowהֵכִיןhe/KHINwould have establishedיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶת־מַמְלַכְתְּךָet-mam/lakh/te/KHAyour kingdomאֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵלel-Yis/ra/ELover Israelעַד־עוֹלָם׃ad-o/LAMforever

    And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

14. 14

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowמַמְלַכְתְּךָmam/lakh/te/KHAyour kingdomלֹא־תָקוּםlo-ta/KUMshall not standבִּקֵּשׁbik/KESHhas soughtיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDלוֹlofor Himselfאִישׁisha manכִּלְבָבוֹkil/va/VOafter His own heartוַיְצַוֵּהוּvay/tsav/VE/huand has appointed himיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDלְנָגִידle/na/GIDas princeעַל־עַמּוֹal-am/MOover His peopleכִּיkibecauseלֹאlonotשָׁמַרְתָּsha/MAR/tayou have keptאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־צִוְּךָet-a/SHER-tsiv/ve/KHAwhat commanded youיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

15. 15

    וַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand aroseשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelוַיַּעַלvay/YA/aland went upמִן־הַגִּלְגָּלmin-Hag/gil/GALfrom GilgalגִּבְעַתGiv/ATto Gibeah ofבִּנְיָמִןBin/ya/MINBenjaminוַיִּפְקֹדvay/yif/KODand numberedשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleהַנִּמְצְאִיםhan/nim/tse/IMwho were presentעִמּוֹim/MOwith himכְּשֵׁשׁke/SHESHabout sixמֵאוֹתme/OThundredאִישׁ׃ishmen

    And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

16. 16

    וְשָׁאוּלve/Sha/ULand Saulוְיוֹנָתָןve/Yo/na/TANand Jonathanבְּנוֹbe/NOhis sonוְהָעָםve/ha/AMand the peopleהַנִּמְצָאhan/nim/TSAwho were presentעִמָּםim/MAMwith themיֹשְׁבִיםyosh/VIMremainedבְּגֶבַעbe/GE/vain Geba ofבִּנְיָמִןBin/ya/MINBenjaminוּפְלִשְׁתִּיםu/Fe/lish/TIMbut the Philistinesחָנוּcha/NUencampedבְמִכְמָשׂ׃ve/Mikh/MASat Michmash

    And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

    וַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outהַמַּשְׁחִיתham/mash/CHITthe raidersמִמַּחֲנֵהmim/ma/cha/NEfrom the camp ofפְלִשְׁתִּיםFe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesשְׁלֹשָׁהshe/lo/SHAthreeרָאשִׁיםra/SHIMcompaniesהָרֹאשׁha/ROSHcompanyאֶחָדe/CHADoneיִפְנֶהyif/NEturned towardאֶל־דֶּרֶךְel-DE/rekhto the way ofעׇפְרָהOf/RAOphrahאֶל־אֶרֶץel-E/retsto the land ofשׁוּעָל׃Shu/ALShual

    And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:

18. 18

    וְהָרֹאשׁve/ha/ROSHand another companyאֶחָדe/CHADoneיִפְנֶהyif/NEturned towardדֶּרֶךְDE/rekhthe way ofבֵּיתBetBeth-חֹרוֹןcho/RONhoronוְהָרֹאשׁve/ha/ROSHand another companyאֶחָדe/CHADoneיִפְנֶהyif/NEturned towardדֶּרֶךְDE/rekhthe way ofהַגְּבוּלhag/ge/VULthe borderהַנִּשְׁקָףhan/nish/KAFthat looks downעַל־גֵּיal-geover the valley ofהַצְּבֹעִיםHats/tse/vo/IMZeboimהַמִּדְבָּרָה׃ham/mid/BA/ratoward the wilderness

    And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

19. 19

    וְחָרָשׁve/cha/RASHnow a smithלֹאlonotיִמָּצֵאyim/ma/TSEwas foundבְּכֹלbe/KHOLthroughout allאֶרֶץE/retsthe land ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelכִּי־[אָמְרוּ]ki-a/me/RUfor said(אמר)marפְלִשְׁתִּיםFe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesפֶּןpenlestיַעֲשׂוּya/a/SUmakeהָעִבְרִיםha/Iv/RIMthe HebrewsחֶרֶבCHE/revswordsאוֹoorחֲנִית׃cha/NITspears

    Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:

20. 20

    וַיֵּרְדוּvay/yer/DUbut went downכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלkhol-Yis/ra/ELall Israelהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיםhap/Pe/lish/TIMto the Philistinesלִלְטוֹשׁlil/TOSHto sharpenאִישׁishevery manאֶת־מַחֲרַשְׁתּוֹet-ma/cha/rash/TOhis plowshareוְאֶת־אֵתוֹve/ET-e/TOand his mattockוְאֶת־קַרְדֻּמּוֹve/ET-kar/dum/MOand his axeוְאֵתve/ETandמַחֲרֵשָׁתוֹ׃ma/cha/re/sha/TOhis hoe

    But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.

21. 21

    וְהָיְתָהve/ha/ye/TAand wasהַפְּצִירָהhap/pe/TSI/rathe chargeפִיםfima pimלַמַּחֲרֵשֹׁתlam/ma/cha/re/SHOTfor the plowsharesוְלָאֵתִיםve/la/e/TIMand for the mattocksוְלִשְׁלֹשׁve/lish/LOSHand for the three-prongedקִלְּשׁוֹןkil/le/SHONforksוּלְהַקַּרְדֻּמִּיםu/le/hak/kar/dum/MIMand for the axesוּלְהַצִּיבu/le/hats/TSIVand for settingהַדָּרְבָן׃had/da/re/VANthe goads

    Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.

22. 22

    וְהָיָהve/ha/YAso it came to passבְּיוֹםbe/YOMon the day ofמִלְחֶמֶתmil/CHE/metbattleוְלֹאve/LOthat notנִמְצָאnim/TSAwas foundחֶרֶבCHE/revswordוַחֲנִיתva/cha/NITor spearבְּיַדbe/YADin the hand ofכׇּל־הָעָםkol-ha/AMall the peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereאֶת־שָׁאוּלet-Sha/ULwith Saulוְאֶת־יוֹנָתָןve/ET-yo/na/TANand Jonathanוַתִּמָּצֵאvat/tim/ma/TSEbut was foundלְשָׁאוּלle/Sha/ULwith Saulוּלְיוֹנָתָןu/Le/yo/na/TANand with Jonathanבְּנוֹ׃be/NOhis son

    So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.

23. 23

    וַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outמַצַּבmats/TSAVthe garrison ofפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesאֶל־מַעֲבַרel-ma/a/VARto the pass ofמִכְמָשׂ׃Mikh/MASMichmash

    And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
