1. 1

   וְהִנֵּהand beholdאִישׁthe man ofאֱלֹהִיםGodבָּאcameמִיהוּדָהfrom Judahבִּדְבַרby the word ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶל־בֵּית־אֵלto Beth-elוְיָרׇבְעָםand Jeroboamעֹמֵדstandingעַל־הַמִּזְבֵּחַupon the altarלְהַקְטִיר׃to burn

   And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

   וַיִּקְרָאand calledעַל־הַמִּזְבֵּחַupon the altarבִּדְבַרby the word ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיֹּאמֶרand saidמִזְבֵּחַan altarמִזְבֵּחַan altarכֹּהthusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDהִנֵּה־בֵןbehold a sonנוֹלָדwas bornלְבֵית־דָּוִדto the house of DavidיֹאשִׁיָּהוּJosiahשְׁמוֹhis nameוְזָבַחand he will sacrificeעָלֶיךָupon youאֶת־כֹּהֲנֵיthose priests ofהַבָּמוֹתthe high placesהַמַּקְטִרִיםthose who burnעָלֶיךָupon youוְעַצְמוֹתand bones ofאָדָםmanיִשְׂרְפוּburned shall they beעָלֶיךָ׃upon you

   And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee.

   וְנָתַןand he gaveבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatמוֹפֵתa miracleלֵאמֹרsayingזֶהthisהַמּוֹפֵתthe wonderאֲשֶׁרwhichדִּבֶּרspokeיְהֹוָהthe LORDהִנֵּהbeholdהַמִּזְבֵּחַthe altarנִקְרָעis about to be torn apartוְנִשְׁפַּךְand shall be poured outהַדֶּשֶׁןthe fatty ashאֲשֶׁר־עָלָיו׃which upon him

   And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

   וַיְהִיand it came to passכִשְׁמֹעַwhen heardהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingאֶת־דְּבַרword ofאִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe man of Godאֲשֶׁרwhichקָרָאcalledעַל־הַמִּזְבֵּחַupon the altarבְּבֵית־אֵלin Beth-elוַיִּשְׁלַחand he put forthיָרׇבְעָםJeroboamאֶת־יָדוֹhis handמֵעַלfrom uponהַמִּזְבֵּחַthe altarלֵאמֹרsayingתִּפְשֻׂהוּseize himוַתִּיבַשׁand it dried upיָדוֹhis handאֲשֶׁרwhichשָׁלַחsentעָלָיוupon himוְלֹאand notיָכֹלableלַהֲשִׁיבָהּto draw it backאֵלָיו׃to him

   And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Beth-el, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

   וְהַמִּזְבֵּחַand the altarנִקְרָעis about to be torn apartוַיִּשָּׁפֵךְand it was poured outהַדֶּשֶׁןthe fatty ashמִן־הַמִּזְבֵּחַfrom the altarכַּמּוֹפֵתaccording to the signאֲשֶׁרwhichנָתַןgaveאִישׁthe man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodבִּדְבַרby the word ofיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

   The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.

   וַיַּעַןand answeredהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֶל־אִישׁto the man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodחַל־נָאentreat I prayאֶת־פְּנֵיface ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָyour Godוְהִתְפַּלֵּלand prayedבַּעֲדִיfor meוְתָשֹׁבso may it come backיָדִיmy handאֵלָיunto meוַיְחַלand he entreatedאִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe man of Godאֶת־פְּנֵיface ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַתָּשׇׁבand it returnedיַד־הַמֶּלֶךְhand of the kingאֵלָיוto himוַתְּהִיand wasכְּבָרִאשֹׁנָה׃as at the former time

   And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

7. 7

   וַיְדַבֵּרand spokeהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingאֶל־אִישׁto the man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodבֹּאָה־אִתִּיcome with meהַבַּיְתָהthe homeוּסְעָדָהand sustainוְאֶתְּנָהso let me makeלְךָfor youמַתָּת׃a present

   And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

8. 8

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe man of Godאֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְunto the kingאִם־תִּתֶּן־לִיif you will give meאֶת־חֲצִיhalfבֵיתֶךָyour householdלֹאnotאָבֹאI will comeעִמָּךְwith youוְלֹא־אֹכַלand not I will eatלֶחֶםbreadוְלֹאand notאֶשְׁתֶּה־מַּיִםI will drink waterבַּמָּקוֹםin the placeהַזֶּה׃this

   And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:

9. 9

   כִּי־כֵןbecause thusצִוָּהcommandedאֹתִיmeבִּדְבַרby the word ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDלֵאמֹרsayingלֹא־תֹאכַלnot you shall eatלֶחֶםbreadוְלֹאand notתִשְׁתֶּה־מָּיִםyou will drink waterוְלֹאand notתָשׁוּבreturnבַּדֶּרֶךְin the wayאֲשֶׁרwhichהָלָכְתָּ׃you went

   For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

10. 10

    וַיֵּלֶךְand wentבְּדֶרֶךְby the way ofאַחֵרotherוְלֹא־שָׁבand not returnedבַּדֶּרֶךְin the wayאֲשֶׁרwhichבָּאcameבָהּin itאֶל־בֵּית־אֵל׃to Beth-el

    So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el.

11. 11

    וְנָבִיאand a prophet ofאֶחָדoneזָקֵןoldיֹשֵׁבdweltבְּבֵית־אֵלin Beth-elוַיָּבוֹאand he cameבְנוֹhis sonוַיְסַפֶּר־לוֹand he recounted himאֶת־כׇּל־הַמַּעֲשֶׂהall the workאֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂהwhich didאִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe man of Godהַיּוֹםthe dayבְּבֵית־אֵלin Beth-elאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםthe wordsאֲשֶׁרwhichדִּבֶּרspokeאֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְunto the kingוַיְסַפְּרוּםand they recounted themלַאֲבִיהֶם׃with their father

    Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.

12. 12

    וַיְדַבֵּרand spokeאֲלֵהֶםunto themאֲבִיהֶםtheir fatherאֵי־זֶהwhere thisהַדֶּרֶךְthe wayהָלָךְhe wentוַיִּרְאוּand they sawבָנָיוhis sonsאֶת־הַדֶּרֶךְthe wayאֲשֶׁרwhichהָלַךְwentאִישׁthe man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodאֲשֶׁר־בָּאwhich cameמִיהוּדָה׃from Judah

    And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.

13. 13

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֶל־בָּנָיוto his sonsחִבְשׁוּ־לִיsaddle to meהַחֲמוֹרthe donkeyוַיַּחְבְּשׁוּ־לוֹand bound up himהַחֲמוֹרthe donkeyוַיִּרְכַּבand he rodeעָלָיו׃upon him

    And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,

14. 14

    וַיֵּלֶךְand wentאַחֲרֵיafterאִישׁthe man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodוַיִּמְצָאֵהוּand he found himיֹשֵׁבdweltתַּחַתunderהָאֵלָהthe oakוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוto himהַאַתָּהare youאִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe man of Godאֲשֶׁר־בָּאתָwhich you have entered intoמִיהוּדָהfrom Judahוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאָנִי׃I

    And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.

15. 15

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוto himלֵךְgoאִתִּיwith meהַבָּיְתָהto the houseוֶאֱכֹלand eatלָחֶם׃food

    Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.

16. 16

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלֹאnotאוּכַלI couldלָשׁוּבto returnאִתָּךְwith youוְלָבוֹאand to comeאִתָּךְwith youוְלֹא־אֹכַלand not I will eatלֶחֶםbreadוְלֹא־אֶשְׁתֶּהand not I will drinkאִתְּךָwith youמַיִםwaterבַּמָּקוֹםin the placeהַזֶּה׃this

    And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:

17. 17

    כִּי־דָבָרbecause a wordאֵלַיto meבִּדְבַרby the word ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDלֹא־תֹאכַלnot you shall eatלֶחֶםbreadוְלֹא־תִשְׁתֶּהand not you will drinkשָׁםthereמָיִםwaterלֹא־תָשׁוּבnot returnלָלֶכֶתto goבַּדֶּרֶךְin the wayאֲשֶׁר־הָלַכְתָּwhich you cameבָּהּ׃in it

    For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

18. 18

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלוֹto himגַּם־אֲנִיalso Iנָבִיאa prophetכָּמוֹךָlike youוּמַלְאָךְand a messengerדִּבֶּרspokeאֵלַיto meבִּדְבַרby the word ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDלֵאמֹרsayingהֲשִׁבֵהוּbring back himאִתְּךָwith youאֶל־בֵּיתֶךָto your houseוְיֹאכַלand let him eatלֶחֶםbreadוְיֵשְׁתְּso he may drinkמָיִםwaterכִּחֵשׁhe liedלוֹ׃to him

    He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

19. 19

    וַיָּשׇׁבand he returnedאִתּוֹwith himוַיֹּאכַלand he shall eatלֶחֶםbreadבְּבֵיתוֹin his houseוַיֵּשְׁתְּand he drankמָיִם׃water

    So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

20. 20

    וַיְהִיand it came to passהֵםtheyיֹשְׁבִיםsittingאֶל־הַשֻּׁלְחָןto the tableוַיְהִיand it came to passדְּבַר־יְהֹוָהthe word of the LORDאֶל־הַנָּבִיאto the prophetאֲשֶׁרwhichהֱשִׁיבוֹ׃he had brought back him

    And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:

21. 21

    וַיִּקְרָאand calledאֶל־אִישׁto the man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodאֲשֶׁר־בָּאwhich cameמִיהוּדָהfrom Judahלֵאמֹרsayingכֹּהthusאָמַרsaidיְהֹוָהthe LORDיַעַןbecauseכִּיthatמָרִיתָyou have been disobedient toפִּיthe mouth ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוְלֹאand notשָׁמַרְתָּyou have keptאֶת־הַמִּצְוָהthe commandmentאֲשֶׁרwhichצִוְּךָhas commanded youיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָ׃your God

    And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,

22. 22

    וַתָּשׇׁבbut camest backוַתֹּאכַלand hast eatenלֶחֶםbreadוַתֵּשְׁתְּand hast drunkמַיִםwaterבַּמָּקוֹםin the placeאֲשֶׁרwhichדִּבֶּרspokeאֵלֶיךָto youאַל־תֹּאכַלdo not you will eatלֶחֶםbreadוְאַל־תֵּשְׁתְּand do not you drinkמָיִםwaterלֹא־תָבוֹאthere shall not comeנִבְלָתְךָyour corpseאֶל־קֶבֶרto a burial siteאֲבֹתֶיךָ׃your fathers

    But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

23. 23

    וַיְהִיand it came to passאַחֲרֵיafterאׇכְלוֹhe had eatenלֶחֶםbreadוְאַחֲרֵיand afterשְׁתוֹתוֹdrank heוַיַּחֲבׇשׁ־לוֹand he saddled himהַחֲמוֹרthe donkeyלַנָּבִיאto the prophetאֲשֶׁרwhichהֱשִׁיבוֹ׃he had brought back him

    And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.

24. 24

    וַיֵּלֶךְand wentוַיִּמְצָאֵהוּand he found himאַרְיֵהa lionבַּדֶּרֶךְin the wayוַיְמִיתֵהוּand he killed himוַתְּהִיand wasנִבְלָתוֹhis corpseמֻשְׁלֶכֶתthrown downבַּדֶּרֶךְin the wayוְהַחֲמוֹרand the assעֹמֵדstandingאֶצְלָהּbeside itוְהָאַרְיֵהand the lionעֹמֵדstandingאֵצֶלnearהַנְּבֵלָה׃the corpse

    And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.

25. 25

    וְהִנֵּהand beholdאֲנָשִׁיםmenעֹבְרִיםpassingוַיִּרְאוּand they sawאֶת־הַנְּבֵלָהthe corpseמֻשְׁלֶכֶתthrown downבַּדֶּרֶךְin the wayוְאֶת־הָאַרְיֵהand the lionעֹמֵדstandingאֵצֶלnearהַנְּבֵלָהthe corpseוַיָּבֹאוּand they cameוַיְדַבְּרוּand spokeבָעִירin the cityאֲשֶׁרwhichהַנָּבִיאthe prophetהַזָּקֵןthe elderיֹשֵׁבdweltבָּהּ׃in it

    And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

26. 26

    וַיִּשְׁמַעand he heardהַנָּבִיאthe prophetאֲשֶׁרwhichהֱשִׁיבוֹhe had brought back himמִן־הַדֶּרֶךְout of the wayוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאִישׁthe man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodהוּאheאֲשֶׁרwhichמָרָהwas disobedient toאֶת־פִּיmouth ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיִּתְּנֵהוּand delivered him upיְהֹוָהthe LORDלָאַרְיֵהto the lionוַיִּשְׁבְּרֵהוּand it has mauled himוַיְמִתֵהוּand he put to death himכִּדְבַרaccording to the word ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֲשֶׁרwhichדִּבֶּר־לוֹ׃spoke him

    And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.

27. 27

    וַיְדַבֵּרand spokeאֶל־בָּנָיוto his sonsלֵאמֹרsayingחִבְשׁוּ־לִיsaddle to meאֶת־הַחֲמוֹרthe donkeyוַיַּחֲבֹשׁוּ׃and they saddled it

    And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him.

28. 28

    וַיֵּלֶךְand wentוַיִּמְצָאand foundאֶת־נִבְלָתוֹhis corpseמֻשְׁלֶכֶתthrown downבַּדֶּרֶךְin the wayוַחֲמוֹרand donkeysוְהָאַרְיֵהand the lionעֹמְדִיםstandingאֵצֶלnearהַנְּבֵלָהthe corpseלֹא־אָכַלnot ateהָאַרְיֵהthe lionאֶת־הַנְּבֵלָהthe corpseוְלֹאand notשָׁבַרhas brokenאֶת־הַחֲמוֹר׃the donkey

    And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.

29. 29

    וַיִּשָּׂאand he castהַנָּבִיאthe prophetאֶת־נִבְלַתthe corpse ofאִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe man of Godוַיַּנִּחֵהוּand he put himאֶל־הַחֲמוֹרto the donkeyוַיְשִׁיבֵהוּand he brought back himוַיָּבֹאand cameאֶל־עִירunto the city ofהַנָּבִיאthe prophetהַזָּקֵןthe elderלִסְפֹּדto mournוּלְקׇבְרוֹ׃and to bury him

    And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.

30. 30

    וַיַּנַּחand he depositedאֶת־נִבְלָתוֹhis corpseבְּקִבְרוֹin his own graveוַיִּסְפְּדוּand they lamentedעָלָיוupon himהוֹיOאָחִי׃my brother

    And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!

31. 31

    וַיְהִיand it came to passאַחֲרֵיafterקׇבְרוֹhe had buriedאֹתוֹhimוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֶל־בָּנָיוto his sonsלֵאמֹרsayingבְּמוֹתִיat my deathוּקְבַרְתֶּםand you will buryאֹתִיmeבַּקֶּבֶרin the graveאֲשֶׁרwhichאִישׁthe man ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodקָבוּרis buriedבּוֹin itאֵצֶלnearעַצְמֹתָיוhis bonesהַנִּיחוּlayאֶת־עַצְמֹתָי׃my bones

    And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:

32. 32

    כִּיforהָיֹהit shall come to passיִהְיֶהshall beהַדָּבָרthe wordאֲשֶׁרwhichקָרָאcalledבִּדְבַרby the word ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDעַל־הַמִּזְבֵּחַupon the altarאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּבֵית־אֵלin Beth-elוְעַלand uponכׇּל־בָּתֵּיall the houses ofהַבָּמוֹתthe high placesאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּעָרֵיin the cities ofשֹׁמְרוֹן׃Samaria

    For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

33. 33

    אַחַרafterהַדָּבָרthe thingהַזֶּהthisלֹא־שָׁבis not turned awayיָרׇבְעָםJeroboamמִדַּרְכּוֹfrom his wayהָרָעָהthe evilוַיָּשׇׁבand he returnedוַיַּעַשׂand he madeמִקְצוֹתfrom all ranks ofהָעָםthe peopleכֹּהֲנֵיthose priests ofבָמוֹתhigh placesהֶחָפֵץwhoever wouldיְמַלֵּאshould fillאֶת־יָדוֹhis handוִיהִיand may beכֹּהֲנֵיthose priests ofבָמוֹת׃high places

    After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

34. 34

    וַיְהִיand it came to passבַּדָּבָרin the thingהַזֶּהthisלְחַטַּאתthe sin ofבֵּיתthe house ofיָרׇבְעָםJeroboamוּלְהַכְחִידand to annihilate itוּלְהַשְׁמִידand to he destroyedמֵעַלfrom uponפְּנֵיface ofהָאֲדָמָה׃the earth

    And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
