   And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

   And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.

   And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

   Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

   And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

   וְלֵוִיve/Le/VIand Leviוּבִנְיָמִןu/Vin/ya/MINand Benjaminלֹאlonotפָקַדfa/KADdid he countבְּתוֹכָםbe/to/KHAMamong themכִּי־נִתְעַבki-nit/AVfor was abhorrentדְּבַר־הַמֶּלֶךְde/VAR-ham/ME/lekhthe king's wordאֶת־יוֹאָב׃et-Yo/AVto Joab

   But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab.

   וַיֵּרַעvay/YE/raand was evilבְּעֵינֵיbe/e/NEin the eyes ofהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodעַל־הַדָּבָרal-had/da/VARconcerning thingהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַיַּךְvay/YAKHand He struckאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃et-Yis/ra/ELIsrael

   And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidאֶל־הָאֱלֹהִיםel-ha/e/lo/HIMto Godחָטָאתִיcha/TA/tiI have sinnedמְאֹדme/ODveryאֲשֶׁרa/SHERin thatעָשִׂיתִיa/SI/tiI have doneאֶת־הַדָּבָרet-had/da/VARthe thingהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהַעֲבֶר־נָאha/a/VER-natake away pleaseאֶת־עֲווֹןet-a/VONthe guilt ofעַבְדְּךָav/de/KHAYour servantכִּיkiforנִסְכַּלְתִּיnis/KAL/tiI have acted foolishlyמְאֹד׃me/ODvery

   And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

   וַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand spokeיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶל־גָּדel-Gadto Gadחֹזֵהcho/ZEthe seer ofדָוִידDa/VIDDavidלֵאמֹר׃le/MORsaying

   And the LORD spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying,

10. 10

    לֵךְlekhgoוְדִבַּרְתָּve/dib/bar/TAand speakאֶל־דָּוִידel-Da/VIDto Davidלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingכֹּהkothusאָמַרa/MARsaysיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDשָׁלוֹשׁsha/LOSHthreeאֲנִיa/NIIנֹטֶהno/TEofferעָלֶיךָa/LE/khato youבְּחַר־לְךָbe/CHAR-le/KHAchoose for yourselfאַחַתa/CHAToneמֵהֵנָּהme/HEN/naof themוְאֶעֱשֶׂה־לָּךְ׃ve/e/e/SE-lakhand I will do to you

    Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameגָדGadGadאֶל־דָּוִידel-Da/VIDto Davidוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלוֹloto himכֹּה־אָמַרko-a/MARthus saysיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDקַבֶּל־לָךְ׃kab/BEL-lakhtake for yourself

    So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee

    אִם־שָׁלוֹשׁim-sha/LOSHeither threeשָׁנִיםsha/NIMyearsרָעָבra/AVfamineוְאִם־שְׁלֹשָׁהve/IM-she/lo/SHAor threeחֳדָשִׁיםcho/da/SHIMmonthsנִסְפֶּהnis/PEbeing swept awayמִפְּנֵי־צָרֶיךָmip/pe/NE-tsa/RE/khabefore your adversariesוְחֶרֶבve/CHE/revwhile the sword ofאוֹיְבֶיךָoy/VE/khayour enemiesלְמַשֶּׂגֶתle/mas/SE/getovertakesוְאִם־שְׁלֹשֶׁתve/IM-she/LO/shetor threeיָמִיםya/MIMdaysחֶרֶבCHE/revthe sword ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוְדֶבֶרve/DE/verpestilenceבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landוּמַלְאַךְu/mal/AKHand the angel ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDמַשְׁחִיתmash/CHITdestroyingבְּכׇל־גְּבוּלbe/KHOL-ge/VULthroughout all the territory ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowרְאֵהre/Eseeמָה־אָשִׁיבma-a/SHIVwhat I shall returnאֶת־שֹׁלְחִיet-shol/CHIto him who sent meדָּבָר׃da/VARa word

    Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidאֶל־גָּדel-Gadto Gadצַר־לִיtsar-liI am in distressמְאֹדme/ODveryאֶפְּלָה־נָּאep/pe/LA-nalet me fall nowבְיַד־יְהֹוָהve/YAD-Adonaiinto the hand of the LORDכִּי־רַבִּיםki-rab/BIMfor great areרַחֲמָיוra/cha/MAYVHis merciesמְאֹדme/ODveryוּבְיַד־אָדָםu/ve/YAD-a/DAMbut into the hand of manאַל־אֶפֹּל׃al-ep/POLlet me not fall

    And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

14. 14

    וַיִּתֵּןvay/yit/TENso sentיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDדֶּבֶרDE/verpestilenceבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלbe/Yis/ra/ELon Israelוַיִּפֹּלvay/yip/POLand there fellמִיִּשְׂרָאֵלmiy/Yis/ra/ELfrom Israelשִׁבְעִיםshiv/IMseventyאֶלֶףE/lefthousandאִישׁ׃ishmen

    So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

15. 15

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodמַלְאָךְmal/AKHan angelלִירוּשָׁלַ͏ִםlI/ru/sha/LA/yimto Jerusalemלְהַשְׁחִיתָהּle/hash/chi/TAto destroy itוּכְהַשְׁחִיתu/khe/hash/CHITand as he was destroyingרָאָהra/AsawיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוַיִּנָּחֶםvay/yin/NA/chemand repentedעַל־הָרָעָהal-ha/ra/Aof the evilוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלַמַּלְאָךְlam/mal/AKHto the angelהַמַּשְׁחִיתham/mash/CHITwho was destroyingרַבravenoughעַתָּהat/TAnowהֶרֶףHE/refwithdrawיָדֶךָya/DE/khayour handוּמַלְאַךְu/mal/AKHand the angel ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDעֹמֵדo/MEDwas standingעִם־גֹּרֶןim-GO/renby the threshing floor ofאׇרְנָןOr/NANOrnanהַיְבוּסִי׃Hay/vu/SIthe Jebusite

    And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

    וַיִּשָּׂאvay/yis/SAand lifted upדָוִידDa/VIDDavidאֶת־עֵינָיוet-e/NAYVhis eyesוַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawאֶת־מַלְאַךְet-mal/AKHthe angel ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDעֹמֵדo/MEDstandingבֵּיןbenbetweenהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe earthוּבֵיןu/VENand betweenהַשָּׁמַיִםhash/sha/MA/yimthe heavensוְחַרְבּוֹve/char/BOand his swordשְׁלוּפָהshe/lu/FAdrawnבְּיָדוֹbe/ya/DOin his handנְטוּיָהne/tu/YAstretched outעַל־יְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִםal-Ye/ru/sha/LA/yimover Jerusalemוַיִּפֹּלvay/yip/POLthen fellדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidוְהַזְּקֵנִיםve/haz/ze/ke/NIMand the eldersמְכֻסִּיםme/khus/SIMcoveredבַּשַּׂקִּיםbas/sak/KIMwith sackclothעַל־פְּנֵיהֶם׃al-pe/ne/HEMupon their faces

    And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidאֶל־הָאֱלֹהִיםel-ha/e/lo/HIMto Godהֲלֹאha/LOwas it notאֲנִיa/NIIאָמַרְתִּיa/MAR/ticommandedלִמְנוֹתlim/NOTto be numberedבָּעָםba/AMthe peopleוַאֲנִי־הוּאva/a/NI-huand it is Iאֲשֶׁר־חָטָאתִיa/SHER-cha/TA/tiwho have sinnedוְהָרֵעַve/ha/RE/aand do evilהֲרֵעוֹתִיha/re/O/tiI have done evilוְאֵלֶּהve/EL/lebut theseהַצֹּאןhats/TSONsheepמֶהmewhatעָשׂוּa/SUhave they doneיְהֹוָהAdonaiO LORDאֱלֹהַיe/lo/HAYmy Godתְּהִיte/HIlet beנָאnapleaseיָדְךָya/de/KHAYour handבִּיbiagainst meוּבְבֵיתu/ve/VETand against the house ofאָבִיa/VImy fatherוּבְעַמְּךָu/ve/am/me/KHAbut on Your peopleלֹאlonotלְמַגֵּפָה׃le/mag/ge/FAfor a plague

    And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

18. 18

    וּמַלְאַךְu/mal/AKHand the angel ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאָמַרa/MARtoldאֶל־גָּדel-Gadto Gadלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingלְדָוִידle/Da/VIDto Davidכִּיkithatיַעֲלֶהya/a/LEshould go upדָוִידDa/VIDDavidלְהָקִיםle/ha/KIMto raiseמִזְבֵּחַmiz/BE/achan altarלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDבְּגֹרֶןbe/GO/renon the threshing floor ofאׇרְנָןOr/NANOrnanהַיְבֻסִי׃Hay/vu/SIthe Jebusite

    Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

19. 19

    וַיַּעַלvay/YA/also went upדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidבִּדְבַר־גָּדbid/VAR-Gadat the word of Gadאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatדִּבֶּרdib/BERhe spokeבְּשֵׁםbe/SHEMin the name ofיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

20. 20

    וַיָּשׇׁבvay/YA/shovand turnedאׇרְנָןOr/NANOrnanוַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawאֶת־הַמַּלְאָךְet-ham/mal/AKHthe angelוְאַרְבַּעַתve/ar/BA/atand four ofבָּנָיוba/NAYVhis sonsעִמּוֹim/MOwith himמִתְחַבְּאִיםmit/chab/be/IMhid themselvesוְאׇרְנָןve/Or/NANand Ornanדָּשׁdashwas threshingחִטִּים׃chit/TIMwheat

    And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

21. 21

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameדָוִידDa/VIDDavidעַד־אׇרְנָןad-Or/NANto Ornanוַיַּבֵּטvay/yab/BETand lookedאׇרְנָןOr/NANOrnanוַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawאֶת־דָּוִידet-Da/VIDDavidוַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outמִן־הַגֹּרֶןmin-hag/GO/renout of the threshing floorוַיִּשְׁתַּחוּvay/yish/TA/chuand bowed downלְדָוִידle/Da/VIDto Davidאַפַּיִםap/PA/yimwith his faceאָרְצָה׃AR/tsato the ground

    And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidאֶל־אׇרְנָןel-Or/NANto Ornanתְּנָה־לִּיte/NA-ligive meמְקוֹםme/KOMthe site ofהַגֹּרֶןhag/GO/renthe threshing floorוְאֶבְנֶה־בּוֹve/ev/NE-bothat I may build on itמִזְבֵּחַmiz/BE/achan altarלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDבְּכֶסֶףbe/KHE/seffor silverמָלֵאma/LEfullתְּנֵהוּte/NE/hugive itלִיlito meוְתֵעָצַרve/te/a/TSARthat may be stoppedהַמַּגֵּפָהham/mag/ge/FAthe plagueמֵעַלme/ALfromהָעָם׃ha/AMthe people

    Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.

23. 23

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאׇרְנָןOr/NANOrnanאֶל־דָּוִידel-Da/VIDto Davidקַח־לָךְkach-lakhtake for yourselfוְיַעַשׂve/YA/asand let doאֲדֹנִיa/do/NImy lordהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingהַטּוֹבhat/TOVwhat is goodבְּעֵינָיוbe/e/NAYVin his eyesרְאֵהre/Eseeנָתַתִּיna/TAT/tiI giveהַבָּקָרhab/ba/KARthe oxenלָעֹלוֹתla/o/LOTfor the burnt offeringsוְהַמּוֹרִגִּיםve/ham/mo/rig/GIMand the threshing instrumentsלָעֵצִיםla/e/TSIMfor woodוְהַחִטִּיםve/ha/chit/TIMand the wheatלַמִּנְחָהlam/min/CHAfor the grain offeringהַכֹּלhak/KOLallנָתָתִּי׃na/TAT/tiI give

    And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidלְאׇרְנָןle/Or/NANto Ornanלֹאlonoכִּי־קָנֹהki-ka/NObut buyאֶקְנֶהek/NEI will buyבְּכֶסֶףbe/KHE/seffor silverמָלֵאma/LEfullכִּיkiforלֹא־אֶשָּׂאlo-es/SAI will not takeאֲשֶׁר־לְךָa/SHER-le/KHAwhat is yoursלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaifor the LORDוְהַעֲלוֹתve/ha/a/LOTor offerעוֹלָהo/LAburnt offeringsחִנָּם׃chin/NAMwithout cost

    And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

25. 25

    וַיִּתֵּןvay/yit/TENand gaveדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidלְאׇרְנָןle/Or/NANto Ornanבַּמָּקוֹםbam/ma/KOMfor the siteשִׁקְלֵיshik/LEshekels ofזָהָבza/HAVgoldמִשְׁקָלmish/KALby weightשֵׁשׁsheshsixמֵאוֹת׃me/OThundred

    So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

26. 26

    וַיִּבֶןvay/YI/venand builtשָׁםshamthereדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidמִזְבֵּחַmiz/BE/achan altarלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDוַיַּעַלvay/YA/aland offeredעֹלוֹתo/LOTburnt offeringsוּשְׁלָמִיםu/she/la/MIMand peace offeringsוַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand calledאֶל־יְהֹוָהel-Adonaito the LORDוַיַּעֲנֵהוּvay/ya/a/NE/huand He answered himבָאֵשׁva/ESHwith fireמִן־הַשָּׁמַיִםmin-hash/sha/MA/yimfrom heavenעַלaluponמִזְבַּחmiz/BACHthe altar ofהָעֹלָה׃ha/o/LAburnt offering

    And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.

27. 27

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand spokeיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDלַמַּלְאָךְlam/mal/AKHto the angelוַיָּשֶׁבvay/YA/shevand he returnedחַרְבּוֹchar/BOhis swordאֶל־נְדָנָהּ׃el-ne/da/NAto its sheath

    And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

28. 28

    בָּעֵתba/ETat timeהַהִיאha/HIthatבִּרְאוֹתbir/OTwhen sawדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidכִּי־עָנָהוּki-a/NA/huthat had answered himיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDבְּגֹרֶןbe/GO/renon the threshing floor ofאׇרְנָןOr/NANOrnanהַיְבוּסִיHay/vu/SIthe Jebusiteוַיִּזְבַּחvay/yiz/BACHthen he sacrificedשָׁם׃shamthere

    At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

    For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.

    וְלֹא־יָכֹלve/LO-ya/KHOLand could notדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetgoלְפָנָיוle/fa/NAYVbefore itלִדְרֹשׁlid/ROSHto inquire ofאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodכִּיkiforנִבְעַתniv/AThe was terrifiedמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbecause ofחֶרֶבCHE/revthe sword ofמַלְאַךְmal/AKHthe angel ofיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
