   וַיְהִיand-it-came-to-passאַחֲרֵי־כֵןhereafterוַיָּמׇתand-he-diedנָחָשׁNahashמֶלֶךְthe-king-ofבְּנֵי־עַמּוֹןsons-of-Ammonוַיִּמְלֹךְand-he-did-reignבְּנוֹhis-sonתַּחְתָּיו׃in-his-stead

   Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

2. 2

   וַיֹּאמֶרand-saidדָּוִידDavidאֶעֱשֶׂה־חֶסֶדI-do-mercyעִם־חָנוּןwith-Hanunבֶּן־נָחָשׁson-of-Nahashכִּי־עָשָׂהbecause-he-didאָבִיוhis-fatherעִמִּיwith-meחֶסֶדmercyוַיִּשְׁלַחand-sentדָּוִידDavidמַלְאָכִיםmessengersלְנַחֲמוֹto-comfort-himעַל־אָבִיוupon-his-fatherוַיָּבֹאוּand-they-cameעַבְדֵיservants-ofדָוִידDavidאֶל־אֶרֶץto-the-land-ofבְּנֵי־עַמּוֹןsons-of-Ammonאֶל־חָנוּןto-Hanunלְנַחֲמוֹ׃to-comfort-him

   And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּand-they-saidשָׂרֵיcaptains-ofבְנֵי־עַמּוֹןsons-of-Ammonלְחָנוּןto-Hanunהַמְכַבֵּדdoes-honorדָּוִידDavidאֶת־אָבִיךָyour-fatherבְּעֵינֶיךָin-your-eyesכִּי־שָׁלַחbecause-sentלְךָfor-youמְנַחֲמִיםcomfortersהֲלֹאis-it-notבַּעֲבוּרbecause-ofלַחְקֹרto-searchוְלַהֲפֹךְand-to-overthrowוּלְרַגֵּלand-to-spy-outהָאָרֶץthe-landבָּאוּcameעֲבָדָיוhis-servantsאֵלֶיךָ׃to-you

   But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

   וַיִּקַּחand-tookחָנוּןHanunאֶת־עַבְדֵיservants-ofדָוִידDavidוַיְגַלְּחֵםand-he-shaved-themוַיִּכְרֹתand-cut-offאֶת־מַדְוֵיהֶםtheir-robesבַּחֵצִיin-the-middleעַד־הַמִּפְשָׂעָהto-their-hipsוַיְשַׁלְּחֵם׃and-he-sent-away-them

   Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

   וַיֵּלְכוּthen-there-wentוַיַּגִּידוּand-toldלְדָוִידof-Davidעַל־הָאֲנָשִׁיםconcerning-the-menוַיִּשְׁלַחand-sentלִקְרָאתָםto-meet-themכִּי־הָיוּbecause-wereהָאֲנָשִׁיםthe-menנִכְלָמִיםashamedמְאֹדgreatlyוַיֹּאמֶרand-saidהַמֶּלֶךְthe-kingשְׁבוּtarryבִירֵחוֹat-Jerichoעַדuntilאֲשֶׁר־יְצַמַּחwhich-it-will-grow-backזְקַנְכֶםyour-beardוְשַׁבְתֶּם׃and-you-will-return

   Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

   וַיִּרְאוּand-they-sawבְּנֵיthe-sons-ofעַמּוֹןAmmonכִּיforהִתְבָּאֲשׁוּthey-had-made-themselves-odiousעִם־דָּוִידwith-Davidוַיִּשְׁלַחand-sentחָנוּןHanunוּבְנֵיand-sons-ofעַמּוֹןAmmonאֶלֶףthousandכִּכַּר־כֶּסֶףtalents-of-silverלִשְׂכֹּרto-hireלָהֶםto-themמִן־אֲרַםout-of-Syria-נַהֲרַיִםnaharaimוּמִן־אֲרַםand-out-of-Syria-מַעֲכָהmaachahוּמִצּוֹבָהand-out-of-Zobahרֶכֶבchariotsוּפָרָשִׁים׃and-horsemen

   And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah.

   וַיִּשְׂכְּרוּand-they-hiredלָהֶםto-themשְׁנַיִםtwoוּשְׁלֹשִׁיםand-thirtyאֶלֶףthousandרֶכֶבchariotsוְאֶת־מֶלֶךְand-king-ofמַעֲכָהMaachahוְאֶת־עַמּוֹand-his-peopleוַיָּבֹאוּand-they-cameוַיַּחֲנוּand-they-encampedלִפְנֵיbeforeמֵידְבָאMedebaוּבְנֵיand-sons-ofעַמּוֹןAmmonנֶאֶסְפוּgathered-themselves-togetherמֵעָרֵיהֶםfrom-their-citiesוַיָּבֹאוּand-they-cameלַמִּלְחָמָה׃to-the-war

   So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

   וַיִּשְׁמַעand-heardדָּוִידDavidוַיִּשְׁלַחand-sentאֶת־יוֹאָבJoabוְאֵתandכׇּל־צָבָאall-the-host-ofהַגִּבּוֹרִים׃the-mighty-men

   And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

   וַיֵּצְאוּand-they-departedבְּנֵיthe-sons-ofעַמּוֹןAmmonוַיַּעַרְכוּand-ranged-themselves-inמִלְחָמָהwarפֶּתַחbefore-the-gate-ofהָעִירthe-cityוְהַמְּלָכִיםand-the-kingsאֲשֶׁר־בָּאוּwhich-cameלְבַדָּםwere-by-themselvesבַּשָּׂדֶה׃in-the-field

   And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

    וַיַּרְאand-sawיוֹאָבJoabכִּי־הָיְתָהthat-was-setפְנֵי־הַמִּלְחָמָהthe-front-of-the-battleאֵלָיוto-himפָּנִיםbeforeוְאָחוֹרand-behindוַיִּבְחַרand-choseמִכׇּל־בָּחוּרout-of-all-the-choice-menבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיַּעֲרֹךְand-ranged-themלִקְרַאתagainstאֲרָם׃Syria

    Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

    וְאֵתandיֶתֶרthe-rest-ofהָעָםthe-peopleנָתַןhe-deliveredבְּיַדin-the-hand-ofאַבְשַׁיAbishaiאָחִיוhis-brotherוַיַּעַרְכוּand-they-ranged-themselvesלִקְרַאתagainstבְּנֵיthe-sons-ofעַמּוֹן׃Ammon

    And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

12. 12

    וַיֹּאמֶרand-saidאִם־תֶּחֱזַקif-is-too-strongמִמֶּנִּיfrom-meאֲרָםSyriaוְהָיִיתָthen-you-shall-beלִּיto-meלִתְשׁוּעָהmy-helpוְאִם־בְּנֵיand-if-sons-ofעַמּוֹןAmmonיֶחֶזְקוּare-too-strongמִמְּךָfrom-youוְהוֹשַׁעְתִּיךָ׃and-I-will-deliver-you

    And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

    חֲזַקbe-of-good-courageוְנִתְחַזְּקָהand-let-us-prove-strongבְּעַד־עַמֵּנוּon-behalf-of-our-peopleוּבְעַדand-forעָרֵיcities-ofאֱלֹהֵינוּour-Godוַיהֹוָהand-the-LORDהַטּוֹבthat-which-is-goodבְּעֵינָיוin-his-eyesיַעֲשֶׂה׃let-do

    Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

14. 14

    וַיִּגַּשׁdrew-nearיוֹאָבJoabוְהָעָםand-the-peopleאֲשֶׁר־עִמּוֹwhich-with-himלִפְנֵיbeforeאֲרָםSyriaלַמִּלְחָמָהto-the-warוַיָּנוּסוּand-they-fledמִפָּנָיו׃from-before-him

    So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

15. 15

    וּבְנֵיand-sons-ofעַמּוֹןAmmonרָאוּsawכִּי־נָסbecause-fledאֲרָםSyriaוַיָּנוּסוּand-they-fledגַם־הֵםthey-likewiseמִפְּנֵיbeforeאַבְשַׁיAbishaiאָחִיוhis-brotherוַיָּבֹאוּand-enteredהָעִירָהthe-cityוַיָּבֹאand-cameיוֹאָבJoabיְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִם׃Jerusalem

    And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

16. 16

    וַיַּרְאand-sawאֲרָםSyriaכִּיthatנִגְּפוּthey-were-put-to-the-worseלִפְנֵיbeforeיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיִּשְׁלְחוּand-sentמַלְאָכִיםmessengersוַיּוֹצִיאוּand-brought-outאֶת־אֲרָםthe-men-of-Syriaאֲשֶׁרwhichמֵעֵבֶרwho-were-beyondהַנָּהָרthe-riverוְשׁוֹפַךְand-Shophachשַׂר־צְבָאthe-chief-of-army-ofהֲדַדְעֶזֶרHadadezerלִפְנֵיהֶם׃went-before-them

    And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

    וַיֻּגַּדand-it-was-toldלְדָוִידof-Davidוַיֶּאֱסֹףand-he-gatheredאֶת־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵלall-Israelוַיַּעֲבֹרand-passed-overהַיַּרְדֵּןthe-Jordanוַיָּבֹאand-came-uponאֲלֵהֶםunto-themוַיַּעֲרֹךְand-ranged-himselfאֲלֵהֶםunto-themוַיַּעֲרֹךְput-in-arrayדָּוִידDavidלִקְרַאתto-meetאֲרָםSyriaמִלְחָמָהwarוַיִּלָּחֲמוּand-they-foughtעִמּוֹ׃with-him

    And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

18. 18

    וַיָּנׇסand-he-fledאֲרָםSyriaמִלִּפְנֵיfrom-the-presence-ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיַּהֲרֹגand-slewדָּוִידDavidמֵאֲרָםfrom-Syriaשִׁבְעַתsevenאֲלָפִיםthousandרֶכֶבcharioteersוְאַרְבָּעִיםand-fortyאֶלֶףthousandאִישׁmenרַגְלִיfootmenוְאֵתandשׁוֹפַךְShophachשַׂר־הַצָּבָאthe-chief-of-the-armyהֵמִית׃and-killed

    But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

19. 19

    וַיִּרְאוּand-they-sawעַבְדֵיservants-ofהֲדַדְעֶזֶרHadadezerכִּיthatנִגְּפוּthey-were-put-to-the-worseלִפְנֵיbeforeיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיַּשְׁלִימוּand-they-made-peaceעִם־דָּוִידwith-Davidוַיַּעַבְדֻהוּand-became-his-servantsוְלֹא־אָבָהand-was-not-willingאֲרָםSyriaלְהוֹשִׁיעַto-saveאֶת־בְּנֵי־עַמּוֹןsons-of-Ammonעוֹד׃any-more

    And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.
