   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passאַחֲרֵי־כֵןa/cha/RE-khenafter thisוַיָּמׇתvay/YA/motthat diedנָחָשׁNa/CHASHNahashמֶלֶךְME/lekhthe king ofבְּנֵי־עַמּוֹןbe/NE-am/MONthe children of Ammonוַיִּמְלֹךְvay/yim/LOKHand reignedבְּנוֹbe/NOhis sonתַּחְתָּיו׃tach/TAYVin his place

   Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidאֶעֱשֶׂה־חֶסֶדe/e/SE-CHE/sedI will show kindnessעִם־חָנוּןim-Cha/NUNwith Hanunבֶּן־נָחָשׁben-Na/CHASHthe son of Nahashכִּי־עָשָׂהki-a/SAfor showedאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherעִמִּיim/MIwith meחֶסֶדCHE/sedkindnessוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidמַלְאָכִיםmal/a/KHIMmessengersלְנַחֲמוֹle/na/cha/MOto comfort himעַל־אָבִיוal-a/VIVconcerning his fatherוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand cameעַבְדֵיav/DEthe servants ofדָוִידDa/VIDDavidאֶל־אֶרֶץel-E/retsto the land ofבְּנֵי־עַמּוֹןbe/NE-am/MONthe children of Ammonאֶל־חָנוּןel-Cha/NUNto Hanunלְנַחֲמוֹ׃le/na/cha/MOto comfort him

   And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidשָׂרֵיsa/REthe princes ofבְנֵי־עַמּוֹןve/NE-am/MONthe children of Ammonלְחָנוּןle/Cha/NUNto Hanunהַמְכַבֵּדham/khab/BEDis honoringדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidאֶת־אָבִיךָet-a/VI/khayour fatherבְּעֵינֶיךָbe/e/NE/khain your eyesכִּי־שָׁלַחki-sha/LACHthat he has sentלְךָle/KHAto youמְנַחֲמִיםme/na/cha/MIMcomfortersהֲלֹאha/LOis it notבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURin orderלַחְקֹרlach/KORto searchוְלַהֲפֹךְve/la/ha/FOKHand to overthrowוּלְרַגֵּלu/le/rag/GELand to spy outהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe landבָּאוּBA/uhave comeעֲבָדָיוa/va/DAYVhis servantsאֵלֶיךָ׃e/LE/khato you

   But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

   וַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookחָנוּןCha/NUNHanunאֶת־עַבְדֵיet-av/DEthe servants ofדָוִידDa/VIDDavidוַיְגַלְּחֵםvay/gal/le/CHEMand shaved themוַיִּכְרֹתvay/yikh/ROTand cut offאֶת־מַדְוֵיהֶםet-mad/ve/HEMtheir garmentsבַּחֵצִיba/CHE/tsiin the middleעַד־הַמִּפְשָׂעָהad-ham/mif/sa/Ato the buttocksוַיְשַׁלְּחֵם׃vay/shal/le/CHEMand sent them away

   Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

   וַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUthen went someוַיַּגִּידוּvay/yag/GI/duand toldלְדָוִידLe/da/VIDDavidעַל־הָאֲנָשִׁיםal-ha/a/na/SHIMconcerning the menוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentלִקְרָאתָםlik/ra/TAMto meet themכִּי־הָיוּki-ha/YUfor wereהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menנִכְלָמִיםnikh/la/MIMhumiliatedמְאֹדme/ODveryוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingשְׁבוּshe/VUstayבִירֵחוֹVi/re/CHOat Jerichoעַדaduntilאֲשֶׁר־יְצַמַּחa/SHER-ye/tsam/MACHhas grownזְקַנְכֶםze/kan/KHEMyour beardוְשַׁבְתֶּם׃ve/shav/TEMand then return

   Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

   וַיִּרְאוּvay/yir/Uand when sawבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonכִּיkithatהִתְבָּאֲשׁוּhit/ba/a/SHUthey had made themselves odiousעִם־דָּוִידim-Da/VIDwith Davidוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentחָנוּןCha/NUNHanunוּבְנֵיu/ve/NEand the children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonאֶלֶףE/lefa thousandכִּכַּר־כֶּסֶףkik/KAR-KE/seftalents of silverלִשְׂכֹּרlis/KORto hireלָהֶםla/HEMfor themselvesמִן־אֲרַםmin-A/RAMout of Aram-נַהֲרַיִםna/ha/RA/yimnaharaimוּמִן־אֲרַםu/MIN-a/RAMand out of Aram-מַעֲכָהma/a/KHAmaachahוּמִצּוֹבָהu/Mits/tso/VAand out of ZobahרֶכֶבRE/khevchariotsוּפָרָשִׁים׃u/fa/ra/SHIMand horsemen

   And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah.

   וַיִּשְׂכְּרוּvay/yis/ke/RUand they hiredלָהֶםla/HEMfor themselvesשְׁנַיִםshe/NA/yimtwoוּשְׁלֹשִׁיםu/she/lo/SHIMand thirtyאֶלֶףE/lefthousandרֶכֶבRE/khevchariotsוְאֶת־מֶלֶךְve/ET-ME/lekhand the king ofמַעֲכָהMa/a/KHAMaachahוְאֶת־עַמּוֹve/ET-am/MOand his peopleוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameוַיַּחֲנוּvay/ya/cha/NUand encampedלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeמֵידְבָאMe/de/VAMedebaוּבְנֵיu/ve/NEand the children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonנֶאֶסְפוּne/es/FUwere gatheredמֵעָרֵיהֶםme/a/re/HEMfrom their citiesוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand cameלַמִּלְחָמָה׃lam/mil/cha/MAto battle

   So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

   וַיִּשְׁמַעvay/yish/MAand heardדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentאֶת־יוֹאָבet-Yo/AVJoabוְאֵתve/ETandכׇּל־צָבָאkol-tsa/VAall the army ofהַגִּבּוֹרִים׃hag/gib/bo/RIMthe mighty men

   And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

9. 9

   וַיֵּצְאוּvay/yets/Uand came outבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonוַיַּעַרְכוּvay/ya/ar/KHUand drew upמִלְחָמָהmil/cha/MAfor battleפֶּתַחPE/tachat the entrance ofהָעִירha/IRthe cityוְהַמְּלָכִיםve/ham/me/la/KHIMand the kingsאֲשֶׁר־בָּאוּa/SHER-BA/uwho had comeלְבַדָּםle/vad/DAMwere by themselvesבַּשָּׂדֶה׃bas/sa/DEin the open field

   And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

    וַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabכִּי־הָיְתָהki-ha/ye/TAthat wasפְנֵי־הַמִּלְחָמָהfe/NE-ham/mil/cha/MAthe front of the battleאֵלָיוe/LAYVagainst himפָּנִיםpa/NIMbeforeוְאָחוֹרve/a/CHORand behindוַיִּבְחַרvay/yiv/CHARand choseמִכׇּל־בָּחוּרmik/KOL-ba/CHURfrom all the choice menבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלbe/Yis/ra/ELof Israelוַיַּעֲרֹךְvay/ya/a/ROKHand drew them upלִקְרַאתlik/RATagainstאֲרָם׃A/RAMAram

    Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

11. 11

    וְאֵתve/ETandיֶתֶרYE/terthe rest ofהָעָםha/AMthe peopleנָתַןna/TANhe gaveבְּיַדbe/YADinto the hand ofאַבְשַׁיAv/SHAYAbishaiאָחִיוa/CHIVhis brotherוַיַּעַרְכוּvay/ya/ar/KHUand they drew upלִקְרַאתlik/RATagainstבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofעַמּוֹן׃Am/MONAmmon

    And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

12. 12

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאִם־תֶּחֱזַקim-te/che/ZAKif is strongerמִמֶּנִּיmim/MEN/nithan IאֲרָםA/RAMAramוְהָיִיתָve/ha/YI/tathen you shall beלִּיlito meלִתְשׁוּעָהlit/shu/Afor helpוְאִם־בְּנֵיve/IM-be/NEbut if the children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonיֶחֶזְקוּye/chez/KUare strongerמִמְּךָmim/me/KHAthan youוְהוֹשַׁעְתִּיךָ׃ve/ho/sha/TI/khathen I will help you

    And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

13. 13

    חֲזַקcha/ZAKbe strongוְנִתְחַזְּקָהve/nit/chaz/ze/KAand let us show ourselves strongבְּעַד־עַמֵּנוּbe/AD-am/ME/nufor our peopleוּבְעַדu/ve/ADand forעָרֵיa/REthe cities ofאֱלֹהֵינוּe/lo/HE/nuour Godוַיהֹוָהve-Adonaiand the LORDהַטּוֹבhat/TOVwhat is goodבְּעֵינָיוbe/e/NAYVin His eyesיַעֲשֶׂה׃ya/a/SEmay He do

    Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

14. 14

    וַיִּגַּשׁvay/yig/GASHso drew nearיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabוְהָעָםve/ha/AMand the peopleאֲשֶׁר־עִמּוֹa/SHER-im/MOwho were with himלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאֲרָםA/RAMAramלַמִּלְחָמָהlam/mil/cha/MAfor battleוַיָּנוּסוּvay/ya/NU/suand they fledמִפָּנָיו׃mip/pa/NAYVfrom before him

    So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

15. 15

    וּבְנֵיu/ve/NEand the children ofעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonרָאוּra/Usawכִּי־נָסki-nasthat had fledאֲרָםA/RAMAramוַיָּנוּסוּvay/ya/NU/suand they fledגַם־הֵםgam-hemthey alsoמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbeforeאַבְשַׁיAv/SHAYAbishaiאָחִיוa/CHIVhis brotherוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand enteredהָעִירָהha/I/rathe cityוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameיוֹאָבYo/AVJoabיְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִם׃Ye/ru/sha/LA/yimto Jerusalem

    And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

16. 16

    וַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawאֲרָםA/RAMAramכִּיkithatנִגְּפוּnig/ge/FUthey had been routedלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיִּשְׁלְחוּvay/yish/le/CHUand sentמַלְאָכִיםmal/a/KHIMmessengersוַיּוֹצִיאוּvay/yo/TSI/uand brought outאֶת־אֲרָםet-A/RAMAramאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasמֵעֵבֶרme/E/verbeyondהַנָּהָרhan/na/HARthe riverוְשׁוֹפַךְve/Sho/FAKHand Shophachשַׂר־צְבָאsar-tse/VAthe commander of the army ofהֲדַדְעֶזֶרHa/dad/E/zerHadadezerלִפְנֵיהֶם׃lif/ne/HEMbefore them

    And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

    וַיֻּגַּדvay/yug/GADand it was toldלְדָוִידle/Da/VIDto Davidוַיֶּאֱסֹףvay/ye/e/SOFand he gatheredאֶת־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵלet-Kol-yis/ra/ELall Israelוַיַּעֲבֹרvay/ya/a/VORand crossedהַיַּרְדֵּןhay/Yar/DENthe Jordanוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameאֲלֵהֶםa/le/HEMto themוַיַּעֲרֹךְvay/ya/a/ROKHand drew upאֲלֵהֶםa/le/HEMagainst themוַיַּעֲרֹךְvay/ya/a/ROKHand drew upדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidלִקְרַאתlik/RATagainstאֲרָםA/RAMAramמִלְחָמָהmil/cha/MAfor battleוַיִּלָּחֲמוּvay/yil/la/cha/MUand they foughtעִמּוֹ׃im/MOwith him

    And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

    וַיָּנׇסvay/YA/nosand fledאֲרָםA/RAMAramמִלִּפְנֵיmil/lif/NEbeforeיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיַּהֲרֹגvay/ya/ha/ROGand killedדָּוִידDa/VIDDavidמֵאֲרָםme/A/RAMof Aramשִׁבְעַתshiv/ATsevenאֲלָפִיםa/la/FIMthousandרֶכֶבRE/khevchariotsוְאַרְבָּעִיםve/ar/ba/IMand fortyאֶלֶףE/lefthousandאִישׁishmenרַגְלִיrag/LIfootmenוְאֵתve/ETandשׁוֹפַךְSho/FAKHShophachשַׂר־הַצָּבָאsar-hats/tsa/VAthe commander of the armyהֵמִית׃he/MIThe killed

    But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

    וַיִּרְאוּvay/yir/Uand they sawעַבְדֵיav/DEthe servants ofהֲדַדְעֶזֶרHa/dad/E/zerHadadezerכִּיkithatנִגְּפוּnig/ge/FUthey had been routedלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיַּשְׁלִימוּvay/yash/LI/muand they made peaceעִם־דָּוִידim-Da/VIDwith Davidוַיַּעַבְדֻהוּvay/ya/av/DU/huand served himוְלֹא־אָבָהve/LO-a/VAand was not willingאֲרָםA/RAMAramלְהוֹשִׁיעַle/ho/SHI/ato saveאֶת־בְּנֵי־עַמּוֹןet-Be/NE-am/MONthe children of Ammonעוֹד׃odany more

    And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.
