   Now when Mosiah had done this he sent out throughout all the land, among all the people, desiring to know their will concerning who should be their king.

   And it came to pass that the voice of the people came, saying: We are desirous that Aaron thy son should be our king and our ruler.

   Now Aaron had gone up to the land of Nephi, therefore the king could not confer the kingdom upon him; neither would Aaron take upon him the kingdom; neither were any of the sons of Mosiah willing to take upon them the kingdom.

   Therefore king Mosiah sent again among the people; yea, even a written word sent he among the people. And these were the words that were written, saying:

   הִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdעַמִּיam/MImy peopleאוֹoorאַחַיa/CHAYmy brethrenכִּיkiforכְאַחִיםkhe/a/CHIMas brethrenחֲשַׁבְתִּיכֶםcha/shav/ti/KHEMI esteemed youחָפַצְתִּיcha/FATS/tiI desireכִּיkithatתִּתְבּוֹנְנוּtit/BON/nuyou should considerבַדָּבָרvad/da/VARthe matterאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִקְרֵאתֶםnik/re/TEMyou are calledלְהִתְבּוֹנֵןle/hit/bo/NENto considerבּוֹboin itכִּיkiforחֲפֵצִיםcha/fe/TSIMdesirousאַתֶּםat/TEMyou areלְהָקִיםle/ha/KIMto raise upעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMover youמֶלֶךְ׃ME/lekha king

   Behold, O ye my people, or my brethren, for I esteem you as such, I desire that ye should consider the cause which ye are called to consider—for ye are desirous to have a king.

   וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאַגִּידag/GIDI declareלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youכִּיkithatאֲשֶׁר־לוֹa/SHER-lowhose isהַמַּמְלָכָהham/mam/la/KHAthe kingdomבְּמִשְׁפָּטbe/mish/PATby rightמֵאֵןme/ENrefusedוְלֹאve/LOand will notיִקַּחyik/KACHtakeעָלָיוa/LAYVupon himאֶת־הַמַּמְלָכָה׃et-ham/mam/la/KHAthe kingdom

   Now I declare unto you that he to whom the kingdom doth rightly belong has declined, and will not take upon him the kingdom.

   And now if there should be another appointed in his stead, behold I fear there would rise contentions among you. And who knoweth but what my son, to whom the kingdom doth belong, should turn to be angry and draw away a part of this people after him, which would cause wars and contentions among you, which would be the cause of shedding much blood and perverting the way of the Lord, yea, and destroy the souls of many people.

   וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאֹמַרo/MARI sayאֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMunto youהָבָהHA/valet usנִתְחַכָּמָהnit/chak/ka/MAbe wiseוְנִתְבּוֹנְנָהve/nit/bon/NAand considerבַדְּבָרִיםvad/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseכִּיkiforאֵין־לָנוּen-LA/nuwe have noיָדyadrightלְהַשְׁחִיתle/hash/CHITto destroyאֶת־בְּנִיet-be/NImy sonוְגַםve/GAMand alsoאֵין־לָנוּen-LA/nuwe have noיָדyadrightלְהַשְׁחִיתle/hash/CHITto destroyאִישׁishany manאַחֵרa/CHERanotherאִם־יֻקַּםim-yuk/KAMif there be raised upתַּחְתָּיו׃tach/TAYVin his stead

   Now I say unto you let us be wise and consider these things, for we have no right to destroy my son, neither should we have any right to destroy another if he should be appointed in his stead.

   וְאִם־יָשׁוּבve/IM-ya/SHUVand if should returnבְּנִיbe/NImy sonאֶל־גְּאוֹנוֹel-ge/o/NOto his prideוְהֶבְלֵי־שָׁוְאve/hev/LE-shavand vanities of falsehoodוְזָכַרve/za/KHARand rememberאֶת־אֲשֶׁרet-a/SHERthat whichאָמַרa/MARhe saidוְדָרַשׁve/da/RASHand claimאֶת־מִשְׁפָּטוֹet-mish/pa/TOhis rightלַמַּמְלָכָהlam/mam/la/KHAto the kingdomוְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it would beלַחֲטֹאla/cha/TOto sinחֲטָאָהcha/ta/Aa sinגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatלוֹlounto himוְגַםve/GAMand alsoלָעָםla/AMthe peopleהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

   And if my son should turn again to his pride and vain things he would recall the things which he had said, and claim his right to the kingdom, which would cause him and also this people to commit much sin.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהָבָהHA/valet usנִתְחַכָּמָהnit/chak/ka/MAbe wiseוְנַבִּיטָהve/nab/bi/TAand lookאֶל־הַדְּבָרִיםel-had/de/va/RIMto the thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוְנַעֲשֶׂהve/na/a/SEand doאֶת־אֲשֶׁרet-a/SHERthat whichיָבִיאya/VIshall bringשָׁלוֹםsha/LOMpeaceלָעָםla/AMunto the peopleהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    And now let us be wise and look forward to these things, and do that which will make for the peace of this people.

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeאֶמְלֹךְem/LOKHI will reignעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMover youכׇּל־יְמֵיkol-ye/MEall the daysחַיַּיchay/YAYof my lifeאַךְakhneverthelessנִמְנֶהnim/NElet us appointשֹׁפְטִיםshof/TIMjudgesלִשְׁפֹּטlish/POTto judgeאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכְּפִיke/FIaccording toתּוֹרָתֵנוּto/ra/te/NUour lawוּנְחַדֵּשׁu/ne/chad/DESHand we shall renewאֶת־דִּבְרֵיet-div/REthe affairsהָעָם־הַזֶּהha/AM-haz/ZEof this peopleכִּיkiforנִמְנֶהnim/NEwe shall appointאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenחֲכָמִיםcha/kha/MIMwiseלְשֹׁפְטִיםle/shof/TIMto be judgesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatיִשְׁפְּטוּyish/pe/TUshall judgeאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכְּפִיke/FIaccording toמִצְוֹת־אֱלֹהִים׃mits/VOT-e/lo/HIMthe commandments of God

    Therefore I will be your king the remainder of my days; nevertheless, let us appoint judges, to judge this people according to our law; and we will newly arrange the affairs of this people, for we will appoint wise men to be judges, that will judge this people according to the commandments of God.

    טוֹבtovit is betterכִּי־יִשָּׁפֵטki-yish/sha/FETthat should be judgedהָאָדָםha/a/DAMmanבִּידֵיbi/DEby the handsאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof GodמִידֵיMI/dethan by the handsאָדָםa/DAMof manכִּיkiforמִשְׁפְּטֵיmish/pe/TEthe judgmentsאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof GodצֶדֶקTSE/dekrighteousnessהֵםhemareתָּמִידta/MIDalwaysוּמִשְׁפְּטֵיu/mish/pe/TEbut the judgmentsהָאָדָםha/a/DAMof manלֹא־צֶדֶקlo-TSE/deknot righteousnessהֵםhemareתָּמִיד׃ta/MIDalways

    Now it is better that a man should be judged of God than of man, for the judgments of God are always just, but the judgments of man are not always just.

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeאִם־יָכֹלim-ya/KHOLif it were possibleתּוּכְלוּtukh/LUyou couldכִּיkithatיִהְיוּyih/YUthere could beלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenצַדִּיקִיםtsad/di/KIMjustלִמְלָכִיםlim/la/KHIMto be kingsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoיָקִימוּya/KI/mushould establishאֶת־תּוֹרַתet-to/RATthe lawאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godוְיִשְׁפְּטוּve/yish/pe/TUand judgeאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכְּפִיke/FIaccording toמִצְוֹתָיוmits/vo/TAYVHis commandmentsאַףafyeaאִם־תּוּכְלוּim-tukh/LUif you were ableלָשִׂיםla/SIMto setלָכֶםla/KHEMfor youמְלָכִיםme/la/KHIMkingsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoיַעֲשׂוּya/a/SUshould doכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasעָשָׂהa/SAdidאָבִיa/VImy fatherבִּנְיָמִיןBin/ya/MINBenjaminלָעָםla/AMunto the peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisאֹמֵרo/MERsayאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youאִם־יִהְיֶהim-yih/YEif it shall beכֵןkhensoתָּמִידta/MIDcontinuallyאָזazthenנָכוֹןna/KHONexpedientכִּיkithatיִהְיוּyih/YUthere should beלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youמְלָכִיםme/la/KHIMkingsלִמְשֹׁלlim/SHOLto reignעֲלֵיכֶם׃a/le/KHEMover you

    Therefore, if it were possible that you could have just men to be your kings, who would establish the laws of God, and judge this people according to his commandments, yea, if ye could have men for your kings who would do even as my father Benjamin did for this people—I say unto you, if this could always be the case then it would be expedient that ye should always have kings to rule over you.

    וְגַם־אֲנִיve/GAM-a/NIand also Iעָמַלְתִּיa/mal/TIlaboredבְּכׇל־הַכֹּחַbe/KHOL-hak/KO/achwith all the powerוְהָאוֹןve/ha/ONand the abilityאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהָיוּha/YUwereלִיliunto meלְלַמֵּדle/lam/MEDto teachאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouאֶת־מִצְוֹתet-mits/VOTthe commandmentsאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godוּלְהָקִיםu/le/ha/KIMand to establishשָׁלוֹםsha/LOMpeaceבְּכׇל־הָאָרֶץbe/KHOL-ha/A/retsthroughout all the landלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TIthat notהֱיוֹתhe/YOTthere beמִלְחָמוֹתmil/cha/MOTwarsוּמְרִיבוֹתu/me/ri/VOTand contentionsוּגְנֵבוֹתu/ge/ne/VOTand stealingsוּבִזָּהu/viz/ZAand plunderingוְדָמִיםve/da/MIMand murderingsוְכׇלve/KHOLand allרִשְׁעָה׃rish/Awickedness

    And even I myself have labored with all the power and faculties which I have possessed, to teach you the commandments of God, and to establish peace throughout the land, that there should be no wars nor contentions, no stealing, nor plundering, nor murdering, nor any manner of iniquity;

15. 15

    וְכׇל־אֲשֶׁרve/KHOL-a/SHERand whosoeverעָשָׂהa/SAdidרִשְׁעָהrish/Awickednessעָנַשְׁתִּיa/nash/TII punishedאוֹתוֹo/TOhimכְּפִיke/FIaccording toחַטָּאתוֹchat/ta/TOhis sinאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichחָטָאcha/TAhe committedכְּפִיke/FIaccording toהַתּוֹרָהhat/to/RAthe lawאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִתְּנָהnit/te/NAwas givenלָנוּLA/nuusמֵאֵתme/ETfromאֲבוֹתֵינוּ׃a/vo/TE/nuour fathers

    And whosoever has committed iniquity, him have I punished according to the crime which he has committed, according to the law which has been given to us by our fathers.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאֹמֵרo/MERsayאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notכׇל־הָאָדָםkhol-ha/a/DAMall menצַדִּיקtsad/DIKjustלֹא־נָכוֹןlo-na/KHONnot expedientכִּיkithatיִהְיוּyih/YUthere should beלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youמֶלֶךְME/lekha kingאוֹoorמְלָכִיםme/la/KHIMkingsלִמְשֹׁלlim/SHOLto reignעֲלֵיכֶם׃a/le/KHEMover you

    Now I say unto you, that because all men are not just it is not expedient that ye should have a king or kings to rule over you.

    כִּיkiforרְאוּre/Ubeholdכַּמָּהkam/MAhow muchרִשְׁעָהrish/Awickednessיַעֲשֶׂהya/a/SEshall causeמֶלֶךְME/lekha kingרָשָׁעra/SHAwickedאֶחָדe/CHADoneוּמַה־גָּדוֹלu/MA-ga/DOLand what greatהַשֶּׁבֶר׃hash/SHE/verdestruction

    For behold, how much iniquity doth one wicked king cause to be committed, yea, and what great destruction!

    הֵןhenyeaזִכְרוּzikh/RUrememberאֶת־הַמֶּלֶךְet-ham/ME/lekhthe kingנֹחַNO/achNoahאֶת־רִשְׁעָתוֹet-rish/a/TOhis wickednessוְאֶת־תּוֹעֲבוֹתָיוve/ET-to/a/vo/TAYVand his abominationsוְגַםve/GAMand alsoאֶת־רִשְׁעַתet-rish/ATthe wickednessעַמּוֹam/MOof his peopleוְתוֹעֲבוֹתֵיהֶםve/to/a/vo/te/HEMand their abominationsרְאוּre/Ubeholdמֶה־עָצוּםme-a/TSUMhow mightyהַשֶּׁבֶרhash/SHE/verthe destructionאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichבָּאbacameעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themוּבִגְלַלu/vig/LALand becauseעֲוֹנוֹתֵיהֶםa/vo/no/te/HEMof their iniquitiesהוּבְאוּhuv/Uthey were broughtלְעַבְדוּת׃le/av/DUTinto bondage

    Yea, remember king Noah, his wickedness and his abominations, and also the wickedness and abominations of his people. Behold what great destruction did come upon them; and also because of their iniquities they were brought into bondage.

    וְלוּלֵיve/lu/LEand were it not forיַדyadthe handבּוֹרְאָםBor/AMof their Creatorהֶחָכָםhe/cha/KHAMthe wiseמִכֹּלmik/KOLabove allוְזֹאתve/ZOTand thisבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofתְּשׁוּבָתָםte/shu/va/TAMtheir repentanceהַכֵּנָהhak/ke/NAsincereהָיוּha/YUthey would haveנִשְׁאָרִיםnish/a/RIMremainedבְּעַבְדוּתbe/av/DUTin bondageעַד־הַיּוֹםad-hay/YOMeven until the dayהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    And were it not for the interposition of their all-wise Creator, and this because of their sincere repentance, they must unavoidably remain in bondage until now.

    אַךְakhbutרְאוּre/Ubeholdהִצִּילָםhits/tsi/LAMHe delivered themכִּיkibecauseנִכְנְעוּnikh/ne/Uhumbled themselvesלְפָנָיוle/fa/NAYVbefore Himוְיַעַןve/YA/anand becauseזָעֲקוּza/a/KUthey criedאֵלָיוe/LAYVunto Himבְּחׇזְקָהbe/choz/KAmightilyהִצִּילָםhits/tsi/LAMHe delivered themמֵעַבְדוּתme/av/DUTout of bondageוְכֵןve/KHENand soיַעֲשֶׂהya/a/SEshall doיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiבְּכֹחוֹbe/kho/CHOin His mightבְּכׇל־עֵתbe/KHOL-etat all timesבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongבְּנֵי־הָאָדָםbe/NE-ha/a/DAMthe children of menוְיִפְרֹשׂve/yif/ROSand He shall stretch forthזְרוֹעַze/RO/athe armחַסְדּוֹchas/DOof His mercyלְכׇל־הַבּוֹטְחִיםle/KHOL-hab/bot/CHIMto all who trustבּוֹ׃boin Him

    But behold, he did deliver them because they did humble themselves before him; and because they cried mightily unto him he did deliver them out of bondage; and thus doth the Lord work with his power in all cases among the children of men, extending the arm of mercy towards them that put their trust in him.

    וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdעַתָּהat/TAnowאֹמֵרo/MERsayאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youלֹאlonotתוּכְלוּtukh/LUyou are ableלְהָסִירle/ha/SIRto removeמֶלֶךְME/lekha kingרָשָׁעra/SHAwickedמִכִּסְאוֹmik/kis/Ofrom his throneכִּי־אִםki-imexceptבְּרִיבbe/RIVthrough strifeגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreatוּבִשְׁפֹּךְu/vish/POKHand through sheddingדָּםdamof bloodרָב׃ravmuch

    And behold, now I say unto you, ye cannot dethrone an iniquitous king save it be through much contention, and the shedding of much blood.

    כִּיkiforהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdיֶשׁ־לוֹyesh-lohe hasאוֹהֲבִיםo/ha/VIMfriendsבְּרִשְׁעָתוֹbe/rish/a/TOin his wickednessוְיַצִּיבve/yats/TSIVand he setsשׁוֹמְרִיםshom/RIMguardsסְבִיבוֹse/vi/VOaround himוְיִקְרַעve/yik/RAand he tears upאֶת־חֻקֵּיet-chuk/KEthe lawsהַמּוֹשְׁלִיםham/mosh/LIMof those who ruledבְּצֶדֶקbe/TSE/dekin righteousnessלְפָנָיוle/fa/NAYVbefore himוְיִרְמֹסve/yir/MOSand he tramplesבְּרַגְלָיוbe/rag/LAYVwith his feetאֶת־מִצְוֹתet-mits/VOTthe commandmentsאֱלֹהִים׃e/lo/HIMof God

    For behold, he has his friends in iniquity, and he keepeth his guards about him; and he teareth up the laws of those who have reigned in righteousness before him; and he trampleth under his feet the commandments of God;

    וְיָשִׂיםve/ya/SIMand he setsחֻקִּיםchuk/KIMlawsוְיִשְׁלְחֵםve/yish/le/CHEMand sends them forthבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongעַמּוֹam/MOhis peopleחֻקִּיםchuk/KIMlawsכְּפִיke/FIaccording toרִשְׁעָתוֹrish/a/TOhis own wickednessוְכׇל־אֲשֶׁרve/KHOL-a/SHERand whosoeverלֹא־יִשְׁמַעlo-yish/MAhearkens notלְחֻקָּיוle/chuk/KAYVunto his lawsיַשְׁמִידyash/MIDhe shall destroyוְכׇל־הַמּוֹרֵדve/KHOL-ham/mo/REDand whosoever rebelsבּוֹboagainst himיִשְׁלַחyish/LACHhe shall sendעָלָיוa/LAYVagainst himאֶת־צְבָאָיוet-tse/va/AYVhis armiesלַמִּלְחָמָהlam/mil/cha/MAto warוְאִם־יוּכַלve/IM-yu/KHALand if he is ableיַשְׁמִידֵםyash/mi/DEMhe shall destroy themוְכָכָהve/KHA/khaand thusיְעַקֵּשׁye/ak/KESHpervertsמֶלֶךְME/lekha kingרָשָׁעra/SHAwickedאֶת־כׇּל־דַּרְכֵיet-kol-dar/KHEall the waysהַצֶּדֶק׃hats/TSE/dekof righteousness

    And he enacteth laws, and sendeth them forth among his people, yea, laws after the manner of his own wickedness; and whosoever doth not obey his laws he causeth to be destroyed; and whosoever doth rebel against him he will send his armies against them to war, and if he can he will destroy them; and thus an unrighteous king doth pervert the ways of all righteousness.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאֹמֵרo/MERsayאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youלֹא־נָכוֹןlo-na/KHONnot expedientכִּיkithatתָבֹאנָהta/VO/nashould comeתּוֹעֵבוֹתto/e/VOTabominationsכָּאֵלֶּהka/EL/lelike theseעֲלֵיכֶם׃a/le/KHEMupon you

    And now behold I say unto you, it is not expedient that such abominations should come upon you.

25. 25

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeבַּחֲרוּba/cha/RUchoose youלָכֶםla/KHEMfor yourselvesבְּקוֹלbe/KOLby the voiceהָעָםha/AMof the peopleשֹׁפְטִיםshof/TIMjudgesלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatתִּשָּׁפְטוּtish/sha/fe/TUyou may be judgedכְּפִיke/FIaccording toהַחֻקִּיםha/chuk/KIMthe lawsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִתְּנוּnit/te/NUwere givenלָכֶםla/KHEMyouמֵאֵתme/ETfromאֲבוֹתֵינוּa/vo/TE/nuour fathersאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichצֶדֶקTSE/dekrighteousnessהֵםhemareוַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand whichנִתְּנוּnit/te/NUwere givenלָהֶםla/HEMthemמִיַּדmiy/YADby the handיְהוָה׃Adonaiof Adonai

    Therefore, choose you by the voice of this people, judges, that ye may be judged according to the laws which have been given you by our fathers, which are correct, and which were given them by the hand of the Lord.

26. 26

    וְלֹאve/LOand notיִקְרֶהyik/REit shall happenתָמִידta/MIDalwaysכִּיkithatקוֹלkolthe voiceהָעָםha/AMof the peopleיִבְחַרyiv/CHARshall chooseבְּדָבָרbe/da/VARanythingנֶגֶדNE/gedcontrary toהַיָּשָׁרhay/ya/SHARthat which is rightאַךְakhbutיִקְרֶהyik/REit shall happenתָמִידta/MIDalwaysכִּיkithatהַחֵלֶקha/CHE/lekthe partהַקָּטָןhak/ka/TANlesserמִן־הָעָםmin-ha/AMof the peopleיִבְחַרyiv/CHARshall chooseבְּדָבָרbe/da/VARthat which isלֹא־טוֹבlo-tovnot goodלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeזֹאתzotthisתִּשְׁמְרוּtish/me/RUyou shall keepוְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it shall beלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youלְחֹקle/CHOKas a lawלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doמַעֲשֵׂיכֶםma/a/se/KHEMyour businessעַל־פִּיal-piaccording toקוֹלkolthe voiceהָעָם׃ha/AMof the people

    Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law—to do your business by the voice of the people.

27. 27

    וְאִםve/IMand ifיָבֹאya/VOshall comeהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayוְקוֹלve/KOLand the voiceהָעָםha/AMof the peopleיִבְחַרyiv/CHARshall chooseבְּרֶשַׁעbe/RE/shainiquityאָזazthenהִגִּיעָהhig/gi/Ais comeעֵתetthe timeמִשְׁפְּטֵיmish/pe/TEof the judgmentsאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMupon youאַףafyeaאָזazthenיִפְקֹדyif/KODHe shall visitאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouבְּשֶׁבֶרbe/SHE/verwith destructionגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreatכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasפָּקַדpa/KADHe visitedאֶת־הָאָרֶץet-ha/A/retsthe landהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisעַד־הֵנָּה׃ad-HEN/nauntil now

    And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land.

28. 28

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאִם־יֵשׁim-yeshif there beלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youשֹׁפְטִיםshof/TIMjudgesוְלֹאve/LOand notיִשְׁפְּטוּyish/pe/TUthey shall judgeאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouכְּפִיke/FIaccording toהַתּוֹרָהhat/to/RAthe lawאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִתְּנָהnit/te/NAwas givenתּוּכְלוּtukh/LUyou are ableלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto causeכִּיkithatיִשָּׁפְטוּyish/sha/fe/TUthey shall be judgedבִּידֵיbi/DEby the handsשׁוֹפֵטsho/FETof a judgeגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreaterמֵהֶם׃me/HEMthan them

    And now if ye have judges, and they do not judge you according to the law which has been given, ye can cause that they may be judged of a higher judge.

29. 29

    וְאִםve/IMand ifשֹׁפְטֵיכֶםshof/te/KHEMyour judgesהַגְּדוֹלִיםhag/ge/do/LIMthe higherלֹאlonotיִשְׁפְּטוּyish/pe/TUshall judgeמִשְׁפְּטֵי־צֶדֶקmish/pe/TE-TSE/dekrighteous judgmentsתַּעֲשׂוּta/a/SUyou shall causeכִּיkithatיֵאָסְפוּye/a/se/FUshall be gatheredמִסְפָּרmis/PARa numberמְעַטme/ATsmallמִשֹּׁפְטֵיכֶםmish/shof/te/KHEMof your judgesהַקְּטַנִּיםhak/ke/tan/NIMthe lesserוְהֵםve/HEMand theyיִשְׁפְּטוּyish/pe/TUshall judgeאֶת־שֹׁפְטֵיכֶםet-shof/te/KHEMyour judgesהַגְּדוֹלִיםhag/ge/do/LIMthe higherכְּפִיke/FIaccording toקוֹלkolthe voiceהָעָם׃ha/AMof the people

    If your higher judges do not judge righteous judgments, ye shall cause that a small number of your lower judges should be gathered together, and they shall judge your higher judges, according to the voice of the people.

30. 30

    וַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iמְצַוֶּהme/tsav/VEcommandאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseבְּיִרְאַתbe/yir/ATin the fearיְהוָהAdonaiof Adonaiוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iמְצַוֶּהme/tsav/VEcommandאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוְלֹא־יִהְיֶהve/LO-yih/YEand there shall not beלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youמֶלֶךְME/lekha kingלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatאִם־יֶחֱטָאim-ye/che/TAif shall sinהָעָם־הַזֶּהha/AM-haz/ZEthis peopleוְיַעֲשֶׂהve/ya/a/SEand shall doעָוֹןa/VONiniquityיָשׁוּבya/SHUVshall returnעֲוֹנָםa/vo/NAMtheir iniquityעַל־רֹאשָׁם׃al-ro/SHAMupon their heads

    And I command you to do these things in the fear of the Lord; and I command you to do these things, and that ye have no king; that if these people commit sins and iniquities they shall be answered upon their own heads.

31. 31

    כִּיkiforהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאֹמֵרo/MERsayאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youחַטֹּאתchat/TOTthe sinsעַם־רָבam-ravof many peopleבָּאוּBA/uwere causedבַּעֲוֹנוֹתba/a/vo/NOTby the iniquitiesמַלְכֵיהֶםmal/khe/HEMof their kingsלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeיָשׁוּבוּya/SHU/vushall returnעֲוֹנוֹתֵיהֶםa/vo/no/te/HEMtheir iniquitiesעַל־רָאשֵׁיal-ra/SHEupon the headsמַלְכֵיהֶם׃mal/khe/HEMof their kings

    For behold I say unto you, the sins of many people have been caused by the iniquities of their kings; therefore their iniquities are answered upon the heads of their kings.

32. 32

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowחָפַצְתִּיcha/FATS/tiI desiredכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notתִהְיֶהtih/YEshould beעוֹדodany moreהַפְּלָיָהhap/pe/la/YAthe inequalityהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisוְאַף־כִּיve/AF-kiespeciallyבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongעַמִּיam/MImy peopleזֶהzethisכִּיkibutחָפַצְתִּיcha/FATS/tiI desiredכִּי־תִהְיֶהki-tih/YEthat should beהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe landהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisאֶרֶץE/retsa landדְּרוֹרde/RORof libertyוְכׇל־אִישׁve/KHOL-ishand every manיֵהָנֶהye/ha/NEshall enjoyמִמִּשְׁפָּטָיוmim/mish/pa/TAYVof his rightsכְּאֶחָדke/e/CHADalikeכׇּל־עוֹדkol-odas long asיִרְאֶהyir/EseesיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiלְטוֹבle/TOVfitכִּיkithatנֵשֵׁבne/SHEVwe may dwellוְנִירַשׁve/ni/RASHand possessאֶת־הָאָרֶץet-ha/A/retsthe landאַףafyeaכׇּל־עוֹדkol-odas long asיִשָּׁאֵרyish/sha/ERshall remainאֶחָדe/CHADoneמִזַּרְעֵנוּmiz/zar/e/NUof our seedעַל־פְּנֵיal-pe/NEupon the faceהָאֲדָמָה׃ha/a/da/MAof the earth

    And now I desire that this inequality should be no more in this land, especially among this my people; but I desire that this land be a land of liberty, and every man may enjoy his rights and privileges alike, so long as the Lord sees fit that we may live and inherit the land, yea, even as long as any of our posterity remains upon the face of the land.

33. 33

    וְעוֹדve/ODand yet moreדְּבָרִיםde/va/RIMthingsרַבִּיםrab/BIMmanyכָּתַבka/TAVwroteהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingמוֹשִׁיָּהMo/SHIY/yaMosiahאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themוַיְגַלvay/GALand he unfoldedלָהֶםla/HEMunto themאֶת־כׇּל־מַסּוֹתet-kol-mas/SOTall the trialsוְצָרוֹתve/tsa/ROTand troublesהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingהַצַּדִּיקhats/tsad/DIKthe righteousאַףafyeaאֶת־כׇּל־עֲמַלet-kol-a/MALall the travailנַפְשׁוֹnaf/SHOof his soulבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofעַמּוֹam/MOhis peopleוְגַםve/GAMand alsoאֶת־כׇּל־תְּלֻנּוֹתet-kol-te/lun/NOTall the murmuringsהָעָםha/AMof the peopleאֶל־מַלְכָּםel-mal/KAMunto their kingוַיְבָאֵרvay/va/ERand he explainedלָהֶםla/HEMunto themאֶת־הַכֹּל׃et-hak/KOLall things

    And many more things did king Mosiah write unto them, unfolding unto them all the trials and troubles of a righteous king, yea, all the travails of soul for their people, and also all the murmurings of the people to their king; and he explained it all unto them.

34. 34

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand he saidלָהֶםla/HEMunto themכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notנָכוֹןna/KHONexpedientכִּיkithatיִהְיוּyih/YUshould beהַדְּבָרִיםhad/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseכִּי־אִםki-imbut ratherיִהְיֶהyih/YEshould beהַמַּשָּׂאham/mas/SAthe burdenעַל־כׇּל־הָעָםal-kol-ha/AMupon all the peopleלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיִשָּׂאyis/SAmay bearכׇל־אִישׁkhol-ishevery manאֶת־חֶלְקוֹ׃et-chel/KOhis part

    And he told them that these things ought not to be; but that the burden should come upon all the people, that every man might bear his part.

35. 35

    וַיְגַלvay/GALand he unfoldedלָהֶםla/HEMunto themגַּםgamalsoאֶת־כׇּל־הָרָעוֹתet-kol-ha/ra/OTall the injuriesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichסָבְלוּsa/ve/LUthey sufferedתַּחַתTA/chatunderמֶלֶךְME/lekha kingרָשָׁעra/SHAwickedהַמּוֹשֵׁלham/mo/SHELwho ruledעֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMover them

    And he also unfolded unto them all the disadvantages they labored under, by having an unrighteous king to rule over them;

36. 36

    הֵןhenyeaאֶת־כׇּל־עֲוֹנוֹתָיוet-kol-a/vo/no/TAYVall his iniquitiesוְתוֹעֲבוֹתָיוve/to/a/vo/TAYVand his abominationsוְאֶת־כׇּל־הַמִּלְחָמוֹתve/ET-kol-ham/mil/cha/MOTand all the warsוְהַמְּרִיבוֹתve/ham/me/ri/VOTand contentionsוּשְׁפֹךְu/she/FOKHand the sheddingהַדָּמִיםhad/da/MIMof bloodוְהַגְּנֵבוֹתve/hag/ge/ne/VOTand the stealingsוְהַבִּזָּהve/hab/biz/ZAand the plunderingוַעֲשִׂיַּתva/a/siy/YATand the committingהַזְּנוּתhaz/ze/NUTof whoredomsוְכׇל־מִינֵיve/KHOL-mi/NEand all kindsהָרֶשַׁעha/RE/shaof wickednessאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichלֹא־יוּכְלוּlo-yukh/LUcould notלְהִמָּנוֹתle/him/ma/NOTbe numberedוַיַּגֵּדvay/yag/GEDand he toldלָהֶםla/HEMthemכִּיkithatהַדְּבָרִיםhad/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseלֹא־נָכוֹןlo-na/KHONnot expedientכִּיkithatיִהְיוּyih/YUthey should beכִּיkiforתוֹעֵבָהto/e/VArepugnantהֵםhemthey wereלְמִצְוֹתle/mits/VOTto the commandmentsאֱלֹהִים׃e/lo/HIMof God

    Yea, all his iniquities and abominations, and all the wars, and contentions, and bloodshed, and the stealing, and the plundering, and the committing of whoredoms, and all manner of iniquities which cannot be enumerated—telling them that these things ought not to be, that they were expressly repugnant to the commandments of God.

37. 37

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterשְׁלֹחַshe/LO/achsentהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingמוֹשִׁיָּהMo/SHIY/yaMosiahאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseבָּעָםba/AMamong the peopleוַיִּוָּכְחוּvay/yiv/va/khe/CHUand they were convincedבֶּאֱמֶתbe/e/METof the truthדְּבָרָיו׃de/va/RAYVof his words

    And now it came to pass, after king Mosiah had sent these things forth among the people they were convinced of the truth of his words.

38. 38

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeעָזְבוּa/ze/VUthey forsookאֶת־חֶפְצָםet-chef/TSAMtheir desiresלְמֶלֶךְle/ME/lekhfor a kingוַיִּכְסְפוּvay/yikh/se/FUand yearnedמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyכִּיkithatיִהְיֶהyih/YEshould beלְכׇל־אִישׁle/KHOL-ishunto every manמִשְׁפָּטmish/PATrightשָׁוֶהsha/VEequalבְּכׇל־הָאָרֶץbe/KHOL-ha/A/retsthroughout all the landהֵןhenyeaוְכׇל־אִישׁve/KHOL-ishand every manהִבִּיעַhib/BI/aexpressedרָצוֹןra/TSONa willingnessלַעֲנוֹתla/a/NOTto answerבַּעֲוֹנוֹתָיו׃ba/a/vo/no/TAYVfor his own iniquities

    Therefore they relinquished their desires for a king, and became exceedingly anxious that every man should have an equal chance throughout all the land; yea, and every man expressed a willingness to answer for his own sins.

39. 39

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeנֶאֶסְפוּne/es/FUthey assembledלַאֲגֻדּוֹתla/a/gud/DOTin bodiesבְּכׇל־הָאָרֶץbe/KHOL-ha/A/retsthroughout all the landלָתֵתla/TETto giveאֶת־קוֹלָםet-ko/LAMtheir voicesמִיmiwhoיִהְיוּyih/YUshould beשֹׁפְטֵיהֶםshof/te/HEMtheir judgesלִשְׁפֹּטlish/POTto judgeאוֹתָםo/TAMthemכְּפִיke/FIaccording toהַתּוֹרָהhat/to/RAthe lawאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִתְּנָהnit/te/NAwas givenלָהֶםla/HEMthemוַיִּשְׂמְחוּvay/yis/me/CHUand they rejoicedשִׂמְחָהsim/CHAjoyגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatעַל־הַחֵרוּתal-ha/che/RUTover the libertyאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִתְּנָהnit/te/NAwas givenלָהֶם׃la/HEMthem

    Therefore, it came to pass that they assembled themselves together in bodies throughout the land, to cast in their voices concerning who should be their judges, to judge them according to the law which had been given them; and they were exceedingly rejoiced because of the liberty which had been granted unto them.

    וַתֶּחֱזַקvat/te/che/ZAKand waxed strongאַהֲבָתָםa/ha/va/TAMtheir loveלְמוֹשִׁיָּהle/Mo/SHIY/yatowards Mosiahוַיַּחְשְׁבֻהוּvay/yach/she/vu/HUand they esteemed himיוֹתֵרyo/TERmoreמִכׇּל־אָדָםmik/KOL-a/DAMabove any other manכִּי־לֹאki-lofor they did notרָאוּra/Useeבוֹvoin himעָרִיץa/RITSa tyrantהַמְבַקֵּשׁham/vak/KESHwho seeksבֶּצַעBE/tsagainאַףafyeaהַבֶּצַעhab/BE/tsathe gainהַמַּשְׁחִיתham/mash/CHITwhich corruptsאֶת־הַנֶּפֶשׁet-han/NE/feshthe soulכִּי־לֹאki-lofor he had notדָרַשׁda/RASHexactedמֵהֶםme/HEMof themעֹשֶׁרO/sherrichesוְלֹא־שָׂשׂve/LO-sasand did not rejoiceבִּשְׁפֹּךְbish/POKHin the sheddingדָּםdamof bloodכִּי־אִםki-imbut ratherהֵקִיםhe/KIMestablishedשָׁלוֹםsha/LOMpeaceבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landוַיִּתֵּןvay/yit/TENand grantedלְעַמּוֹle/am/MOunto his peopleלְהִנָּצֵלle/hin/na/TSELto deliver themselvesמִכׇּל־עַבְדוּתmik/KOL-av/DUTfrom all bondageלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeחֲשָׁבוּהוּcha/sha/vu/HUthey esteemed himאַףafyeaחֲשָׁבוּהוּcha/sha/vu/HUthey esteemed himעַדadeven untoלִמְאֹד׃lim/ODexceedingly

    And they did wax strong in love towards Mosiah; yea, they did esteem him more than any other man; for they did not look upon him as a tyrant who was seeking for gain, yea, for that lucre which doth corrupt the soul; for he had not exacted riches of them, neither had he delighted in the shedding of blood; but he had established peace in the land, and he had granted unto his people that they should be delivered from all manner of bondage; therefore they did esteem him, yea, exceedingly, beyond measure.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatמִנּוּmin/NUthey appointedשֹׁפְטִיםshof/TIMjudgesלִמְשֹׁלlim/SHOLto reignעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMover themאוֹoorלִשְׁפֹּטlish/POTto judgeאוֹתָםo/TAMthemכְּפִיke/FIaccording toהַתּוֹרָהhat/to/RAthe lawוַיַּעֲשׂוּvay/ya/a/SUand they didכֵןkhenthusבְּכׇל־הָאָרֶץ׃be/KHOL-ha/A/retsthroughout all the land

    And it came to pass that they did appoint judges to rule over them, or to judge them according to the law; and this they did throughout all the land.

42. 42

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatהֻפְקַדhuf/KADwas appointedאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTto beהַשּׁוֹפֵטhash/sho/FETthe judgeהָרֹאשׁha/ROSHthe chiefהָרִאשׁוֹןha/ri/SHONthe firstוְהוּאve/HUand he wasגַם־הַכֹּהֵןgam-hak/ko/HENalso the priestהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLthe highכִּי־נָתַןki-na/TANfor gaveאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherאֶת־הַמִּשְׂרָהet-ham/mis/RAthe officeעָלָיוa/LAYVupon himוַיִּתֶּן־לוֹvay/YIT/ten-loand he gave himאֶת־הַפְּקֻדָּהet-hap/pe/kud/DAthe chargeעַל־כׇּל־דִּבְרֵיal-kol-div/REover all the affairsהָעֵדָה׃ha/e/DAof the church

    And it came to pass that Alma was appointed to be the first chief judge, he being also the high priest, his father having conferred the office upon him, and having given him the charge concerning all the affairs of the church.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatהָלַךְha/LAKHwalkedאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaבְּדַרְכֵיbe/dar/KHEin the waysיְהוָהAdonaiof Adonaiוַיִּשְׁמֹרvay/yish/MORand he keptאֶת־מִצְוֹתָיוet-mits/vo/TAYVHis commandmentsוַיִּשְׁפֹּטvay/yish/POTand he judgedמִשְׁפְּטֵי־צֶדֶקmish/pe/TE-TSE/dekrighteous judgmentsוַיְהִיvay/HIand there wasשָׁלוֹםsha/LOMpeaceתָּמִידta/MIDcontinuallyבָּאָרֶץ׃ba/A/retsin the land

    And now it came to pass that Alma did walk in the ways of the Lord, and he did keep his commandments, and he did judge righteous judgments; and there was continual peace through the land.

    וְכָכָהve/KHA/khaand thusהֵחֵלhe/CHELbeganמִמְשַׁלmim/SHALthe reignהַשּׁוֹפְטִיםhash/shof/TIMof the judgesבְּכׇל־אֶרֶץbe/KHOL-E/retsthroughout all the landזָרַהֶמְלָהZa/ra/HEM/laof Zarahemlaבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongכׇּל־הָעָםkol-ha/AMall the peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִקְרְאוּnik/re/Uwere calledנֶפִיִּיםNe/fiy/YIMNephitesוַיְהִיvay/HIand wasאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaהַשּׁוֹפֵטhash/sho/FETthe judgeהָרִאשׁוֹןha/ri/SHONthe firstוְהָרֹאשׁ׃ve/ha/ROSHand the chief

    And thus commenced the reign of the judges throughout all the land of Zarahemla, among all the people who were called the Nephites; and Alma was the first and chief judge.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּי־מֵתki-metthat diedאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherוְהוּאve/HUand he wasבֶּן־שְׁמוֹנִיםben-she/mo/NIMson of eightyוּשְׁתַּיִםush/TA/yimand twoשָׁנָהsha/NAyearsוַיְחִיvay/CHIand he livedלְהַשְׁלִיםle/hash/LIMto fulfillאֶת־מִצְוֹתet-mits/VOTthe commandmentsאֱלֹהִים׃e/lo/HIMof God

    And now it came to pass that his father died, being eighty and two years old, having lived to fulfil the commandments of God.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּי־מֵתki-metthat diedגַּם־מוֹשִׁיָּהgam-Mo/SHIY/yaalso Mosiahבִּשְׁנַתbish/NATin the yearשְׁלֹשִׁיםshe/lo/SHIMthirtyוְשָׁלֹשׁve/sha/LOSHand thirdלְמׇלְכוֹle/mol/KHOof his reignוְהוּאve/HUand he wasבֶּן־שִׁשִּׁיםben-shish/SHIMson of sixtyוְשָׁלֹשׁve/sha/LOSHand threeשָׁנָהsha/NAyearsוַיְהִיvay/HIand wasהַכֹּלhak/KOLthe wholeחֲמֵשׁcha/MESHfiveמֵאוֹתme/OThundredוָתֵשַׁעva/TE/shaand nineשָׁנִיםsha/NIMyearsמֵעֵתme/ETfrom the timeצֵאתtsetof the going outלֶחִיLE/chiof Lehiמִירוּשָׁלָיִם׃mI/ru/sha/LA/yimfrom Jerusalem

    And it came to pass that Mosiah died also, in the thirty and third year of his reign, being sixty and three years old; making in the whole, five hundred and nine years from the time Lehi left Jerusalem.

    וַיִּתֹּםvay/yit/TOMand thus endedמִמְשַׁלmim/SHALthe reignהַמְּלָכִיםham/me/la/KHIMof the kingsעַל־עַםal-amover the peopleנֶפִיNE/fiof Nephiוַיִּתְּמוּvay/yit/te/MUand thus endedיְמֵיye/MEthe daysאַלְמָאAL/maof Almaאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהָיָהha/YAwasמְיַסֵּדme/yas/SEDthe founderעֲדָתָם׃a/da/TAMof their church

    And thus ended the reign of the kings over the people of Nephi; and thus ended the days of Alma, who was the founder of their church.
