   וַיְהִיvay/HInow there wasמָקוֹםma/KOMa placeבְּשֶׁמְלוֹןbe/SHEM/lonin Shemlonאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichבְּנוֹתbe/NOTthe daughtersהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesנִקְהֲלוּnik/ha/LUgatheredשָׁמָּהSHAM/mathereלָשִׁירla/SHIRto singוְלָחוּלve/la/CHULand to danceוּלְשַׂמֵּחַu/le/sam/ME/achand to make merryאֶת־לִבָּן׃et-lib/BANtheir heart

   Now there was a place in Shemlon where the daughters of the Lamanites did gather themselves together to sing, and to dance, and to make themselves merry.

   And it came to pass that there was one day a small number of them gathered together to sing and to dance.

   וְכֹהֲנֵיve/kho/ha/NEnow the priestsנֹחַNO/achof Noahהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingבּוֹשׁוּBO/shuwere ashamedלָשׁוּבla/SHUVto returnאֶל־עִירel-irto the cityנֶפִיNE/fiof Nephiוְגַם־יָרְאוּve/GAM-ya/re/Uand also fearedפֶּן־יַהַרְגוּםpen-ya/har/GUMlest should slay themהָעָםha/AMthe peopleעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeלֹא־הֵעֵזּוּlo-he/ez/ZUthey durst notלָשׁוּבla/SHUVreturnאֶל־נְשֵׁיהֶםel-ne/she/HEMto their wivesוְאֶלve/ELand toבְּנֵיהֶם׃be/ne/HEMtheir children

   And now the priests of king Noah, being ashamed to return to the city of Nephi, yea, and also fearing that the people would slay them, therefore they durst not return to their wives and their children.

   And having tarried in the wilderness, and having discovered the daughters of the Lamanites, they laid and watched them;

   And when there were but few of them gathered together to dance, they came forth out of their secret places and took them and carried them into the wilderness; yea, twenty and four of the daughters of the Lamanites they carried into the wilderness.

   And it came to pass that when the Lamanites found that their daughters had been missing, they were angry with the people of Limhi, for they thought it was the people of Limhi.

   Therefore they sent their armies forth; yea, even the king himself went before his people; and they went up to the land of Nephi to destroy the people of Limhi.

   And now Limhi had discovered them from the tower, even all their preparations for war did he discover; therefore he gathered his people together, and laid wait for them in the fields and in the forests.

   And it came to pass that when the Lamanites had come up, that the people of Limhi began to fall upon them from their waiting places, and began to slay them.

    And it came to pass that the battle became exceedingly sore, for they fought like lions for their prey.

    וַיָּחֶלvay/YA/cheland beganעַםamthe peopleלִמְהִיLIM/hiof Limhiלַהֲדֹףla/ha/DOFto driveאֶת־הַלָּמָנִיםet-Hal/la/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאַךְakheven thoughלֹא־הָיוּlo-ha/YUthey were notאַףafevenחֲצִיcha/TSIhalfמִסְפָּרָםmis/pa/RAMof their numberוַיִּלָּחֲמוּvay/yil/la/cha/MUand they foughtעַל־חַיֵּיהֶםal-chay/ye/HEMfor their livesוּבְעַדu/ve/ADand forנְשֵׁיהֶםne/she/HEMtheir wivesוּבְעַדu/ve/ADand forבְּנֵיהֶםbe/ne/HEMtheir childrenעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeהִתְגַּבְּרוּhit/gab/be/RUexerted themselvesוַיִּלָּחֲמוּvay/yil/la/cha/MUand they foughtכַּתַּנִּינִים׃kat/tan/ni/NIMlike dragons

    And it came to pass that the people of Limhi began to drive the Lamanites before them; yet they were not half so numerous as the Lamanites. But they fought for their lives, and for their wives, and for their children; therefore they exerted themselves and like dragons did they fight.

    וַיִּמְצְאוּvay/yim/tse/Uand they discoveredאֶת־מֶלֶךְet-ME/lekhthe kingהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesבֵּיןbenamongמֵתֵיהֶםme/te/HEMtheir deadאַךְakhbutלֹא־מֵתlo-methe was not deadכִּיkiforנִפְצַעnif/TSAwoundedוַיֻּשְׁלַךְvay/yush/LAKHand was castאַרְצָהAR/tsato the groundכִּיkiforמִהֲרוּmi/ha/RUhastenedעַמּוֹam/MOhis peopleלָנוּס׃la/NUSto flee

    And it came to pass that they found the king of the Lamanites among the number of their dead; yet he was not dead, having been wounded and left upon the ground, so speedy was the flight of his people.

    And they took him and bound up his wounds, and brought him before Limhi, and said: Behold, here is the king of the Lamanites; he having received a wound has fallen among their dead, and they have left him; and behold, we have brought him before you; and now let us slay him.

    But Limhi said unto them: Ye shall not slay him, but bring him hither that I may see him. And they brought him. And Limhi said unto him: What cause have ye to come up to war against my people? Behold, my people have not broken the oath that I made unto you; therefore, why should ye break the oath which ye made unto my people?

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingהֵפַרְתִּיhe/far/TII brokeאֶת־הַשְּׁבוּעָהet-hash/she/vu/Athe oathכִּיkibecauseנָשְׂאוּna/se/Utook awayעַמְּךָam/me/KHAyour peopleאֶת־בְּנוֹתet-be/NOTthe daughtersעַמִּיam/MIof my peopleעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeבְּאַפִּיbe/ap/PIin my angerצִוִּיתִיtsiv/VI/tiI commandedאֶת־עַמִּיet-am/MImy peopleלַעֲלוֹתla/a/LOTto come upלַמִּלְחָמָהlam/mil/cha/MAto warעַל־עַמֶּךָ׃al-am/ME/khaupon your people

    And now the king said: I have broken the oath because thy people did carry away the daughters of my people; therefore, in my anger I did cause my people to come up to war against thy people.

    וְלִמְהִיve/LIM/hiand Limhiלֹא־שָׁמַעlo-sha/MAhad not heardדָּבָרda/VARanythingעַל־הַדָּבָרal-had/da/VARof the matterהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeאָמַרa/MARhe saidאֶדְרֹשׁed/ROSHlet me searchבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongעַמִּיam/MImy peopleוְכׇל־אֲשֶׁרve/KHOL-a/SHERand whosoeverעָשָׂהa/SAdidהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARthe thingהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisמוֹתmotdieיוּמָתyu/MATshall be put to deathעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeצִוָּהtsiv/VAhe causedלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto makeחֵקֶרCHE/kera searchבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongעַמּוֹ׃am/MOhis people

    And now Limhi had heard nothing concerning this matter; therefore he said: I will search among my people and whosoever has done this thing shall perish. Therefore he caused a search to be made among his people.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand nowכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenשָׁמַעsha/MAheardגִּדְעוֹןGid/ONGideonאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוְהוּאve/HUand he beingשַׂר־צְבָאsar-tse/VAthe captain of the armyהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingוַיִּגַּשׁvay/yig/GASHand he drew nearוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְel-ham/ME/lekhunto the kingאָנָּאan/NAI prayהִתְאַפַּקhit/ap/PAKforbearוְאַל־תַּחְקֹרve/AL-tach/KORand do not searchבָּעָםba/AMamong the peopleוְאַל־תָּשִׂיםve/AL-ta/SIMand do not layעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themאֶת־הַדָּבָרet-had/da/VARthe thingהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    Now when Gideon had heard these things, he being the king’s captain, he went forth and said unto the king: I pray thee forbear, and do not search this people, and lay not this thing to their charge.

    הֲלֹאha/LOdo you notתִזְכֹּרtiz/KORrememberאֶת־כֹּהֲנֵיet-ko/ha/NEthe priestsאָבִיךָa/VI/khaof your fatherאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomבִּקֵּשׁbik/KESHsoughtהָעָם־הַזֶּהha/AM-haz/ZEthis peopleלְהַשְׁמִידָםle/hash/mi/DAMto destroy themהֲלֹאha/LOare they notהֵםhemtheyבַּמִּדְבָּרbam/mid/BARin the wildernessוַהֲלֹאva/ha/LOand are notהֵמָּהHEM/matheyאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoגָּנְבוּga/ne/VUstoleאֶת־בְּנוֹתet-be/NOTthe daughtersהַלָּמָנִים׃hal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanites

    For do ye not remember the priests of thy father, whom this people sought to destroy? And are they not in the wilderness? And are not they the ones who have stolen the daughters of the Lamanites?

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowרְאֵהre/Eseeוְהַגֵּדve/hag/GEDand tellלַמֶּלֶךְlam/ME/lekhthe kingאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMof the thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיַגִּידyag/GIDhe may declareלְעַמּוֹle/am/MOunto his peopleוְיִשָּׁקְטוּve/yish/sha/ke/TUand they may be pacifiedאֵלֵינוּe/LE/nuunto usכִּיkithatהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdהֵםhemtheyמִתְכּוֹנְנִיםmit/kon/NIMpreparingלַעֲלוֹתla/a/LOTto come upעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuagainst usוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdמְעַטִּיםme/at/TIMfewאֲנָחְנוּ׃a/NACH/nuare we

    And now, behold, and tell the king of these things, that he may tell his people that they may be pacified towards us; for behold they are already preparing to come against us; and behold also there are but few of us.

    וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdבָּאִיםba/IMcomeהֵםhemtheyבַּהֲמוֹןba/ha/MONwith the multitudeצִבְאוֹתֵיהֶםtsiv/o/te/HEMof their armiesוְאִם־לֹאve/IM-loand if notיַשְׁקִיטֵםyash/ki/TEMshall pacify themהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֵלֵינוּe/LE/nuunto usאָבֹדa/VODperishנֹאבֵד׃no/VEDwe must perish

    And behold, they come with their numerous hosts; and except the king doth pacify them towards us we must perish.

    הֲלֹאha/LOhave notבָּאוּBA/ucomeדִּבְרֵיdiv/REthe wordsאֲבִינָדִיA/VI/na/diof Abinadiאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִבָּאnib/BAhe prophesiedעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuagainst usוְכׇל־זֹאתve/KHOL-zotand all thisכִּי־לֹאki-lobecause notשָׁמַעְנוּsha/MA/nuwe hearkenedבְּקוֹלbe/KOLunto the voiceיְהוָהAdonaiof Adonaiוְלֹאve/LOand notסַרְנוּsar/NUwe turnedמֵעֲוֹנוֹתֵינוּ׃me/a/vo/no/te/NUfrom our iniquities

    For are not the words of Abinadi fulfilled, which he prophesied against us—and all this because we would not hearken unto the words of the Lord, and turn from our iniquities?

22. 22

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowנַשְׁקִיטָהnash/ki/TAlet us pacifyאֶת־הַמֶּלֶךְet-ham/ME/lekhthe kingוּנְקַיְּמָהu/ne/kay/ye/MAand we will fulfillאֶת־הַשְּׁבוּעָהet-hash/she/vu/Athe oathאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִשְׁבַּעְנוּnish/BA/nuwe sworeלוֹlounto himכִּי־טוֹבki-tovfor betterלָנוּLA/nufor usלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTto beלַעֲבָדִיםla/a/va/DIMfor servantsמֵאֲשֶׁרme/a/SHERthan thatנֹאבַדno/VADwe should perishוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowנַשְׁבִּיתnash/BITlet us put a stopשְׁפֹךְshe/FOKHto the sheddingהַדָּמִיםhad/da/MIMof the bloodהָרַבִּים׃ha/rab/BIMthe many

    And now let us pacify the king, and we fulfil the oath which we have made unto him; for it is better that we should be in bondage than that we should lose our lives; therefore, let us put a stop to the shedding of so much blood.

    וַיַּגֵּדvay/yag/GEDand toldלִמְהִיLIM/hiLimhiלַמֶּלֶךְlam/ME/lekhthe kingאֶת־כׇּל־הַדְּבָרִיםet-kol-had/de/va/RIMall the thingsעַל־אֹדוֹתal-o/DOTconcerningאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherוְהַכֹּהֲנִיםve/hak/ko/ha/NIMand the priestsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatבָּרְחוּba/re/CHUfledלַמִּדְבָּרlam/mid/BARinto the wildernessוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidכִּיkithatהֵםhemtheyחָטְפוּcha/te/FUstoleאֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיהֶם׃et-be/no/te/HEMtheir daughters

    And now Limhi told the king all the things concerning his father, and the priests that had fled into the wilderness, and attributed the carrying away of their daughters to them.

    וַיִּשָּׁקֵטvay/yish/sha/KETand was pacifiedהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֶל־עַמּוֹel-am/MOtoward his peopleוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand he saidאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themנֵצֵאne/TSElet us go forthלִקְרַאתlik/RATto meetעַמִּיam/MImy peopleבְּלִיbe/LIwithoutכְלֵי־נָשֶׁקkhe/LE-NA/shekweaponsוְהִנְנִיve/hin/NIand behold Iנִשְׁבָּעnish/BAswearלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youבִּשְׁבוּעָהbish/vu/Awith an oathכִּיkithatעַמִּיam/MImy peopleלֹא־יָמִיתוּlo-ya/mi/TUshall not slayאֶת־עַמְּכֶם׃et-am/me/KHEMyour people

    And it came to pass that the king was pacified towards his people; and he said unto them: Let us go forth to meet my people, without arms; and I swear unto you with an oath that my people shall not slay thy people.

    And it came to pass that they followed the king, and went forth without arms to meet the Lamanites. And it came to pass that they did meet the Lamanites; and the king of the Lamanites did bow himself down before them, and did plead in behalf of the people of Limhi.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּרְאוֹתkir/OTwhen sawהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאֶת־עַםet-amthe peopleלִמְהִיLIM/hiof Limhiכִּיkithatאֵיןenthere were noלָהֶםla/HEMunto themכְּלֵי־נָשֶׁקke/LE-NA/shekweaponsוַיְרַחֲמוּvay/ra/cha/MUthey had compassionעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themוַיִּשָּׁקְטוּvay/yish/sha/ke/TUand were pacifiedאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMtowards themוַיָּשׁוּבוּvay/ya/SHU/vuand returnedעִם־מַלְכָּםim-mal/KAMwith their kingבְּשָׁלוֹםbe/sha/LOMin peaceאֶל־אַרְצָם׃el-ar/TSAMto their own land

    And when the Lamanites saw the people of Limhi, that they were without arms, they had compassion on them and were pacified towards them, and returned with their king in peace to their own land.
