   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterעֲבֹרa/VORthe passingשָׁנִיםsha/NIMof yearsמִסְפָּרmis/PARsomeוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOthere cameאִישׁisha manבְּתוֹךְbe/TOKHamongעַם־נֶפִיam-NE/fithe people of Nephiוּשְׁמוֹu/she/MOand his name wasשֶׁרֶם׃SHE/remSherem

   And now it came to pass after some years had passed away, there came a man among the people of Nephi, whose name was Sherem.

   And it came to pass that he began to preach among the people, and to declare unto them that there should be no Christ. And he preached many things which were flattering unto the people; and this he did that he might overthrow the doctrine of Christ.

   And he labored diligently that he might lead away the hearts of the people, insomuch that he did lead away many hearts; and he knowing that I, Jacob, had faith in Christ who should come, he sought much opportunity that he might come unto me.

   And he was learned, that he had a perfect knowledge of the language of the people; wherefore, he could use much flattery, and much power of speech, according to the power of the devil.

   And he had hope to shake me from the faith, notwithstanding the many revelations and the many things which I had seen concerning these things; for I truly had seen angels, and they had ministered unto me. And also, I had heard the voice of the Lord speaking unto me in very word, from time to time; wherefore, I could not be shaken.

   And it came to pass that he came unto me, and on this wise did he speak unto me, saying: Brother Jacob, I have sought much opportunity that I might speak unto you; for I have heard and also know that thou goest about much, preaching that which ye call the gospel, or the doctrine of Christ.

   And ye have led away much of this people that they pervert the right way of God, and keep not the law of Moses which is the right way; and convert the law of Moses into the worship of a being which ye say shall come many hundred years hence. And now behold, I, Sherem, declare unto you that this is blasphemy; for no man knoweth of such things; for he cannot tell of things to come. And after this manner did Sherem contend against me.

   אַךְakhbutהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdשָׁפַךְsha/FAKHpouredיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodאֶת־רוּחוֹet-Ru/CHOhis Spiritבְּנַפְשִׁיbe/naf/SHIinto my soulעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatהִכְלַמְתִּיוhikh/lam/TIVI confounded himבְּכׇלbe/KHOLin allדְּבָרָיו׃de/va/RAYVhis words

   But behold, the Lord God poured in his Spirit into my soul, insomuch that I did confound him in all his words.

   וָאֹמַרva/o/MARand I saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVunto himהַתְכַחֵשׁhat/kha/CHESHdo you denyבַּמָּשִׁיחַBam/ma/SHI/achChristאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoיָבוֹאya/VOshall comeוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand he saidאִם־יִהְיֶהim-yih/YEif there shall beמָשִׁיחַMa/SHI/acha Christלֹאlonotאֲכַחֵשׁa/kha/CHESHdenyבּוֹbohimאַךְakhbutיָדַעְתִּיya/DA/tiI knowכִּיkithatאֵיןenthere is noמָשִׁיחַMa/SHI/achChristוְלֹא־הָיָהve/LO-HA/yaneither wasוְלֹא־יִהְיֶהve/LO-yih/YEneither shall beלְעוֹלָם׃le/o/LAMforever

   And I said unto him: Deniest thou the Christ who shall come? And he said: If there should be a Christ, I would not deny him; but I know that there is no Christ, neither has been, nor ever will be.

    וָאֹמַרva/o/MARand I saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVunto himהֲתַאֲמִיןha/ta/a/MINdo you believeבַּכְּתוּבִיםbak/ke/tu/VIMin the scripturesוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand he saidכֵּן׃kenyea

    And I said unto him: Believest thou the scriptures? And he said, Yea.

    וָאֹמַרva/o/MARand I saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVunto himאִם־כֵּןim-kenif soלֹאlonotהֲבִינוֹתָha/vi/no/TAyou understandאוֹתָםo/TAMthemכִּיkiforהֵםhemtheyמְעִידִיםme/i/DIMtestifyבֶּאֱמֶתbe/e/METin truthעַל־הַמָּשִׁיחַal-Ham/ma/SHI/achof Christהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאֹמַרo/MARI sayלְךָle/KHAunto youכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notכָּתְבוּka/te/VUwroteהַנְּבִיאִיםhan/ne/vi/IMthe prophetsוְלֹאve/LOnorנִבְּאוּnib/be/Uprophesiedבִּלְתִּיbil/TIexceptאִם־דִּבְּרוּim-dib/be/RUthey spokeעַל־הַמָּשִׁיחַal-Ham/ma/SHI/achconcerning Christהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    And I said unto him: Then ye do not understand them; for they truly testify of Christ. Behold, I say unto you that none of the prophets have written, nor prophesied, save they have spoken concerning this Christ.

    וְלֹאve/LOand notזֹאתzotthisלְבַדle/VADonlyנִגְלָהnig/LAhas been made manifestאֵלַיe/LAYunto meכִּיkiforשָׁמַעְתִּיsha/MA/tiI heardוְרָאִיתִיve/ra/I/tiand seenוְגַםve/GAMand it alsoנִגְלָהnig/LAhas been made manifestאֵלַיe/LAYunto meבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achby the powerרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁRU/ach-Hak/KO/deshof the Holy Ghostלָכֵןla/KHENwhereforeיָדַעְתִּיya/DA/tiI knowכִּי־אִםki-imthat ifלֹאlonotתֵעָשֶׂהte/a/SEthere be madeכַפָּרָהkhap/pa/RAan atonementיֹאבְדוּyo/ve/DUmust be lostכׇּל־בְּנֵיkol-be/NEallהָאָדָם׃ha/a/DAMmankind

    And this is not all—it has been made manifest unto me, for I have heard and seen; and it also has been made manifest unto me by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, I know if there should be no atonement made all mankind must be lost.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatאָמַרa/MARhe saidאֵלַיe/LAYunto meהַרְאֵנִיhar/E/nishow meאוֹתota signבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achby the powerרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁRU/ach-Hak/KO/deshof the Holy Ghostהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיָדַעְתָּya/DA/tayou knowבּוֹboin itהַרְבֵּה׃har/BEso much

    And it came to pass that he said unto me: Show me a sign by this power of the Holy Ghost, in the which ye know so much.

    And I said unto him: What am I that I should tempt God to show unto thee a sign in the thing which thou knowest to be true? Yet thou wilt deny it, because thou art of the devil. Nevertheless, not my will be done; but if God shall smite thee, let that be a sign unto thee that he has power, both in heaven and in earth; and also, that Christ shall come. And thy will, O Lord, be done, and not mine.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERthat whenדִּבַּרְתִּיdib/BAR/tiI spokeאֲנִיa/NIIיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOcameעָלָיוa/LAYVupon himכֹּחַKO/achthe powerיְהוָהAdonaiof Adonaiעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatנָפַלna/FALhe fellאָרְצָהAR/tsato the earthוַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatטֻפַּחtup/PACHhe was nourishedיָמִיםya/MIMdaysרַבִּים׃rab/BIMmany

    And it came to pass that when I, Jacob, had spoken these words, the power of the Lord came upon him, insomuch that he fell to the earth. And it came to pass that he was nourished for the space of many days.

16. 16

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatאָמַרa/MARhe saidאֶל־הָעָםel-ha/AMunto the peopleהִקָּבְצוּhik/ka/ve/TSUgather togetherמָחָרma/CHARon the morrowכִּיkiforאָמוּתa/MUTI shall dieלָכֵןla/KHENwhereforeאֶחְפֹּץech/POTSI desireלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERto speakאֶל־הָעָםel-ha/AMunto the peopleבְּטֶרֶםbe/TE/rembeforeאָמוּת׃a/MUTI shall die

    And it came to pass that he said unto the people: Gather together on the morrow, for I shall die; wherefore, I desire to speak unto the people before I shall die.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedמִמׇּחֳרָתmim/mo/cho/RATon the morrowוַיִּקָּהֲלוּvay/yik/ka/ha/LUwere gathered togetherהֶהָמוֹןhe/ha/MONthe multitudeוַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand spokeאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themנְכוֹחָהne/kho/CHAplainlyוַיְכַחֵשׁvay/kha/CHESHand deniedבַּדְּבָרִיםbad/de/va/RIMthe thingsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichלִמְּדָםlim/me/DAMhe taught themוַיּוֹדvay/YODand confessedבַּמָּשִׁיחַbam/Ma/SHI/achin Christוּבְכֹחַu/ve/KHO/achand in the powerרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁRU/ach-Hak/KO/deshof the Holy Ghostוּבְשָׁרֵתu/ve/sha/RETand in the ministeringהַמַּלְאָכִים׃ham/mal/a/KHIMof the angels

    And it came to pass that on the morrow the multitude were gathered together; and he spake plainly unto them and denied the things which he had taught them, and confessed the Christ, and the power of the Holy Ghost, and the ministering of angels.

    וַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand spokeאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themנְכוֹחָהne/kho/CHAplainlyכִּיkithatהׇתְעָהhot/Ahe had been deceivedבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achby the powerהַשָּׂטָןhas/sa/TANof the devilוַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand spokeעַל־הַשְּׁאוֹלal-hash/she/OLof hellוְעַל־הַנֶּצַחve/AL-han/NE/tsachand of eternityוְעַל־עֹנֶשׁve/AL-O/neshand of punishmentעוֹלָם׃o/LAMeternal

    And he spake plainly unto them, that he had been deceived by the power of the devil. And he spake of hell, and of eternity, and of eternal punishment.

    And he said: I fear lest I have committed the unpardonable sin, for I have lied unto God; for I denied the Christ, and said that I believed the scriptures; and they truly testify of him. And because I have thus lied unto God I greatly fear lest my case shall be awful; but I confess unto God.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERthat whenדִּבֶּרdib/BERspokeאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseלֹא־יָכֹלlo-ya/KHOLhe could notלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERto speakעוֹדodmoreוַיִּגְוַע׃vay/yig/VAand he gave up the ghost

    And it came to pass that when he had said these words he could say no more, and he gave up the ghost.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERthat whenרָאָהra/Asawהֶהָמוֹןhe/ha/MONthe multitudeכִּיkithatדִּבֶּרdib/BERhe spokeאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseבְּטֶרֶםbe/TE/rembeforeיִגְוַעyig/VAhe gave up the ghostוַיִּתְמְהוּvay/yit/me/HUthey were astonishedמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatיָרַדya/RADcame downעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themכֹּחַKO/achthe powerאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godוַיֻּכּוּvay/yuk/KUand they were overcomeעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatנָפְלוּna/fe/LUthey fellאָרְצָה׃AR/tsato the earth

    And when the multitude had witnessed that he spake these things as he was about to give up the ghost, they were astonished exceedingly; insomuch that the power of God came down upon them, and they were overcome that they fell to the earth.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowטוֹבtovgoodהָיָהha/YAwasהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARthe thingהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisבְּעֵינַיbe/e/NAYin my eyesאֲנִיa/NImeיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobכִּיkiforבִקַּשְׁתִּיוvik/kash/TIVI requested itמֵאָבִיme/A/VIof my Fatherאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoבַּשָּׁמַיִםbash/sha/MA/yimin the heavenכִּיkiforשָׁמַעsha/MAhe heardאֶת־זַעֲקָתִיet-za/a/ka/TImy cryוַיַּעַןvay/YA/anand answeredאֶת־תְּפִלָּתִי׃et-te/fil/la/TImy prayer

    Now, this thing was pleasing unto me, Jacob, for I had requested it of my Father who was in heaven; for he had heard my cry and answered my prayer.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatהוּשַׁבhu/SHAVwas restoredהַשָּׁלוֹםhash/sha/LOMthe peaceוְאַהֲבַתve/a/ha/VATand the loveאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongהָעָםha/AMthe peopleוַיִּדְרְשׁוּvay/yid/re/SHUand they searchedבַכְּתוּבִיםvak/ke/tu/VIMthe scripturesוְלֹאve/LOand notשָׁמְעוּsha/me/Uthey hearkenedעוֹדodmoreלְדִבְרֵיle/div/REto the wordsהָאִישׁha/ISHof the manהָרָשָׁעha/ra/SHAthe wickedהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    And it came to pass that peace and the love of God was restored again among the people; and they searched the scriptures, and hearkened no more to the words of this wicked man.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatחֻשְּׁבוּchush/she/VUwere devisedדְרָכִיםde/ra/KHIMmeansרַבּוֹתrab/BOTmanyלְהָשִׁיבle/ha/SHIVto reclaimוּלְהַחֲזִירu/le/ha/cha/ZIRand to restoreאֶת־הַלָּמָנִיםet-Hal/la/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאֶל־דַּעַתel-DA/atunto the knowledgeהָאֱמֶתha/e/METof the truthאַךְakhbutהָיָהha/YAit wasהַכֹּלhak/KOLallלַשָּׁוְאlash/SHAVin vainכִּיkiforשָׂשׂוּSA/suthey delightedבְּמִלְחָמוֹתbe/mil/cha/MOTin warsוּבִשְׁפׇךְ־דָּםu/vish/FOKH-damand in bloodshedוַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand there wasלָהֶםla/HEMunto themשִׂנְאַתsin/ATa hatredעוֹלָםo/LAMeternalאֵלֵינוּe/LE/nuunto usאֲחֵיהֶםa/che/HEMtheir brethrenוַיְבַקְשׁוּvay/vak/SHUand they soughtבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achby the powerכְּלֵיke/LEof the weaponsנִשְׁקָםnish/KAMof their armsלְהַשְׁמִידֵנוּle/hash/mi/DE/nuto destroy usתָּמִיד׃ta/MIDcontinually

    And it came to pass that many means were devised to reclaim and restore the Lamanites to the knowledge of the truth; but it all was vain, for they delighted in wars and bloodshed, and they had an eternal hatred against us, their brethren. And they sought by the power of their arms to destroy us continually.

    לָכֵןla/KHENwhereforeהִתְחַזְּקוּhit/chaz/ze/KUfortified themselvesעַם־נֶפִיam-NE/fithe people of Nephiנֶגְדָּםneg/DAMagainst themבִּכְלֵיbikh/LEwith the weaponsנִשְׁקָםnish/KAMof their armsוּבְכׇל־כֹּחָםu/ve/KHOL-ko/CHAMand in all their mightבֹּטְחִיםbot/CHIMtrustingבֵּאלֹהִיםbe/lo/HIMin the Godוּבְצוּרu/ve/TSURand rockיְשׁוּעָתָםye/shu/a/TAMof their salvationלָכֵןla/KHENwhereforeהָיוּha/YUwereעַד־כֹּהad-kohithertoגֹּבְרִיםgov/RIMconquerorsעַל־אוֹיְבֵיהֶם׃al-oy/ve/HEMof their enemies

    Wherefore, the people of Nephi did fortify against them with their arms, and with all their might, trusting in the God and rock of their salvation; wherefore, they became as yet, conquerors of their enemies.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatהִזְקַנְתִּיhiz/kan/TII grew oldאֲנִיa/NIIיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobוְנִכְתָּבִיםve/nikh/ta/VIMand were being writtenדִּבְרֵיdiv/REthe wordsהָעָם־הַזֶּהha/AM-haz/ZEof this peopleעַל־לוּחוֹתal-lu/CHOTupon the platesנֶפִיNE/fiof Nephiהָאֲחֵרִיםha/a/che/RIMthe otherלָכֵןla/KHENwhereforeאֲכַלֶּהa/khal/LEI shall concludeאֶת־הַסֵּפֶרet-has/SE/ferthe recordהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisמַגִּידmag/GIDI declareכִּיkithatכָּתַבְתִּיka/TAV/tiI wroteכְּפִיke/FIaccording toמֵיטַבme/TAVthe bestדַּעְתִּיda/TIof my knowledgeלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingכִּיkithatעָבַרa/VARpassed awayהַזְּמָןhaz/ze/MANthe timeעִמָּנוּim/MA/nuwith usוְגַםve/GAMand alsoעָבְרוּa/ve/RUpassed awayחַיֵּינוּchay/YE/nuour livesכַּחֲלוֹםka/cha/LOMas a dreamהָיִינוּha/YI/nuwe wereעַםama peopleבּוֹדֵדbo/DEDlonelyוְקוֹדֵרve/ko/DERand solemnנוֹדְדִיםnod/DIMwanderersמֻשְׁלָכִיםmush/la/KHIMcast outמִירוּשָׁלַיִםmI/ru/sha/LA/yimfrom Jerusalemנוֹלָדִיםno/la/DIMbornבְּצָרָהbe/tsa/RAin tribulationבַּמִּדְבָּרbam/mid/BARin the wildernessוּשְׂנוּאִיםu/se/nu/IMand hatedלַאֲחֵינוּla/a/che/NUof our brethrenאֲשֶׁר־הֵבִיאוּa/SHER-he/VI/uwho broughtמִלְחָמוֹתmil/cha/MOTwarsוּמְרִיבוֹתu/me/ri/VOTand contentionsלָכֵןla/KHENwhereforeבָּכִינוּba/KHI/nuwe mournedאֶת־יָמֵינוּ׃et-ya/ME/nuour days

    And it came to pass that I, Jacob, began to be old; and the record of this people being kept on the other plates of Nephi, wherefore, I conclude this record, declaring that I have written according to the best of my knowledge, by saying that the time passed away with us, and also our lives passed away like as it were unto us a dream, we being a lonesome and a solemn people, wanderers, cast out from Jerusalem, born in tribulation, in a wilderness, and hated of our brethren, which caused wars and contentions; wherefore, we did mourn out our days.

    And I, Jacob, saw that I must soon go down to my grave; wherefore, I said unto my son Enos: Take these plates. And I told him the things which my brother Nephi had commanded me, and he promised obedience unto the commands. And I make an end of my writing upon these plates, which writing has been small; and to the reader I bid farewell, hoping that many of my brethren may read my words. Brethren, adieu.
