   And now it came to pass that Alma returned from the land of Gideon, after having taught the people of Gideon many things which cannot be written, having established the order of the church, according as he had before done in the land of Zarahemla, yea, he returned to his own house at Zarahemla to rest himself from the labors which he had performed.

   And thus ended the ninth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.

   And it came to pass in the commencement of the tenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, that Alma departed from thence and took his journey over into the land of Melek, on the west of the river Sidon, on the west by the borders of the wilderness.

   And he began to teach the people in the land of Melek according to the holy order of God, by which he had been called; and he began to teach the people throughout all the land of Melek.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּי־בָאוּki-VA/uthat cameאֵלָיוe/LAYVunto himהָעָםha/AMthe peopleמִכׇּל־גְּבוּלוֹתmik/KOL-ge/vu/LOTout of all the bordersהָאָרֶץha/A/retsof the landאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich wereעַל־יַדal-yadbyהַמִּדְבָּרham/mid/BARthe wildernessוַיִּטָּבְלוּvay/yit/ta/ve/LUand they were baptizedבְּכׇל־הָאָרֶץ׃be/KHOL-ha/A/retsthroughout all the land

   And it came to pass that the people came to him throughout all the borders of the land which was by the wilderness side. And they were baptized throughout all the land;

   So that when he had finished his work at Melek he departed thence, and traveled three days’ journey on the north of the land of Melek; and he came to a city which was called Ammonihah.

   Now it was the custom of the people of Nephi to call their lands, and their cities, and their villages, yea, even all their small villages, after the name of him who first possessed them; and thus it was with the land of Ammonihah.

   And it came to pass that when Alma had come to the city of Ammonihah he began to preach the word of God unto them.

   וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdהַשָּׂטָןHas/sa/TANSatanאָחַזa/CHAZgot holdמְאֹדme/ODgreatבִּלְבַבbil/VAVupon the heartsהָעָםha/AMof the peopleבְּעִירbe/IRof the cityעַמּוֹנִיהָהAm/mo/NI/haof Ammonihahעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeלֹא־שָׁמְעוּlo-sha/me/Uthey would not hearkenלְדִבְרֵיle/div/REunto the wordsאַלְמָא׃AL/maof Alma

   Now Satan had gotten great hold upon the hearts of the people of the city of Ammonihah; therefore they would not hearken unto the words of Alma.

    אַךְakhneverthelessעָמַלa/MALlaboredאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaהַרְבֵּהhar/BEmuchבָּרוּחַba/RU/achin the spiritנֶאֱבָקne/e/VAKwrestlingעִם־הָאֱלֹהִיםim-ha/e/lo/HIMwith Godבִּתְפִלָּהbit/fil/LAin prayerחֲזָקָהcha/za/KAmightyכִּיkithatיִשְׁפֹּךְyish/POKHHe would pour outאֶת־רוּחוֹet-Ru/CHOHis Spiritעַל־הָעָםal-ha/AMover the peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereבָּעִירba/IRin the cityוְגַםve/GAMand alsoכִּיkithatיִתֵּן־לוֹyit/TEN-loHe would grant himלְהַטְבִּילָםle/hat/bi/LAMthat he might baptize themלִתְשׁוּבָה׃lit/shu/VAunto repentance

    Nevertheless Alma labored much in the spirit, wrestling with God in mighty prayer, that he would pour out his Spirit upon the people who were in the city; that he would also grant that he might baptize them unto repentance.

    Nevertheless, they hardened their hearts, saying unto him: Behold, we know that thou art Alma; and we know that thou art high priest over the church which thou hast established in many parts of the land, according to your tradition; and we are not of thy church, and we do not believe in such foolish traditions.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowיָדַעְנוּya/DA/nuwe knowכִּי־לֹאki-lobecause notמֵעֲדָתְךָme/a/da/te/KHAof your churchאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuwe areיָדַעְנוּya/DA/nuwe knowכִּיkithatאֵין־לְךָen-le/KHAyou have noכֹּחַKO/achpowerעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuover usוְאַתָּהve/at/TAand youמָסַרְתָּma/sar/TAhave delivered upאֶת־כִּסֵּאet-kis/SEthe seatהַמִּשְׁפָּטham/mish/PATof judgmentלְנֶפִיהָהle/Ne/FI/haunto Nephihahלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeאֵינְךָe/ne/KHAyou are notהַשֹּׁפֵטhash/sho/FETthe judgeהָרֹאשׁha/ROSHthe chiefעָלֵינוּ׃a/LE/nuover us

    And now we know that because we are not of thy church we know that thou hast no power over us; and thou hast delivered up the judgment-seat unto Nephihah; therefore thou art not the chief judge over us.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenאָמְרוּa/me/RUsaidהָעָםha/AMthe peopleזֹאתzotthisוַיַּעַמְדוּvay/ya/am/DUand stoodנֶגֶדNE/gedagainstכׇּל־דְּבָרָיוkol-de/va/RAYVall his wordsוַיְחָרְפוּvay/cha/re/FUand reviledאוֹתוֹo/TOhimוַיָּרֹקּוּvay/ya/rok/KUand spatעָלָיוa/LAYVupon himוַיְצַוּוּvay/tsav/VUand causedלְשַׁלְּחוֹle/shal/le/CHOto cast him outמֵעִירָםme/i/RAMof their cityוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand he departedמִשָּׁםmish/SHAMfrom thenceוַיִּסַּעvay/yis/SAand journeyedאֶל־הָעִירel-ha/IRunto the cityהַנִּקְרֵאתhan/nik/RETwhich was calledאַהֲרֹן׃A/ha/RONAaron

    Now when the people had said this, and withstood all his words, and reviled him, and spit upon him, and caused that he should be cast out of their city, he departed thence and took his journey towards the city which was called Aaron.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedבְּלֶכְתּוֹbe/lekh/TOas he was journeyingשָׁמָּהSHAM/mathitherוְהוּאve/HUbeingכָּבֵדka/VEDweighed downבְּיָגוֹןbe/ya/GONwith sorrowעֹבֵרo/VERwadingבְּצָרָהbe/tsa/RAthrough tribulationוְעָקַתve/a/KATand anguishנֶפֶשׁNE/feshof soulרַבָּהrab/BAmuchבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofרִשְׁעַתrish/ATthe wickednessהָעָםha/AMof the peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereבְּעִירbe/IRin the cityעַמּוֹנִיהָהAm/mo/NI/haof Ammonihahוַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedבִּהְיוֹתbih/YOTwhile wasאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaכָּבֵדka/VEDthus weighed downבְּיָגוֹןbe/ya/GONwith sorrowוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEbeholdמַלְאַךְmal/AKHan angelיְהוָהAdonaiof Adonaiנִרְאָהnir/Aappearedאֵלָיוe/LAYVunto himלֵאמֹר׃le/MORsaying

    And it came to pass that while he was journeying thither, being weighed down with sorrow, wading through much tribulation and anguish of soul, because of the wickedness of the people who were in the city of Ammonihah, it came to pass while Alma was thus weighed down with sorrow, behold an angel of the Lord appeared unto him, saying:

    בָּרוּךְba/RUKHblessedאַתָּהat/TAare youאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeשָׂאsalift upרֹאשְׁךָro/she/KHAyour headוּשְׂמַחu/se/MACHand rejoiceכִּיkiforיֶשׁ־לְךָyesh-le/KHAyou haveסִבָּהsib/BAcauseגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatלִשְׂמֹחַlis/MO/achto rejoiceכִּיkiforהָיִיתָha/YI/tayou have beenנֶאֱמָןne/e/MANfaithfulבִּשְׁמִירַתbish/mi/RATin keepingמִצְוֹתmits/VOTthe commandmentsהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMof Godמֵעֵתme/ETfrom the timeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichקִבַּלְתָּkib/bal/TAyou receivedדְּבָרְךָde/va/re/KHAyour messageהָרִאשׁוֹןha/ri/SHONfirstמֵאִתּוֹme/it/TOfrom Himהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאָנֹכִיa/no/KHII amהוּאhuheאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהִגַּדְתִּיhig/GAD/tideliveredאוֹתוֹo/TOitלְךָ׃le/KHAunto you

    Blessed art thou, Alma; therefore, lift up thy head and rejoice, for thou hast great cause to rejoice; for thou hast been faithful in keeping the commandments of God from the time which thou receivedst thy first message from him. Behold, I am he that delivered it unto you.

    וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdשֻׁלַּחְתִּיshul/LACH/tiI am sentלְצַוּוֹתְךָle/tsav/vot/KHAto command youכִּי־תָשׁוּבki-ta/SHUVthat you returnאֶל־עִירel-irunto the cityעַמּוֹנִיהָהAm/mo/NI/haof Ammonihahוְתִדְרֹשׁve/tid/ROSHand preachשֵׁנִיתshe/NITagainאֶל־עַםel-amunto the peopleהָעִירha/IRof the cityאַףafyeaדְּרֹשׁde/ROSHpreachאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themכִּיkiyeaאִם־לֹאim-loexceptיָשׁוּבוּya/SHU/vuthey repentיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodיַשְׁמִידֵם׃yash/mi/DEMwill destroy them

    And behold, I am sent to command thee that thou return to the city of Ammonihah, and preach again unto the people of the city; yea, preach unto them. Yea, say unto them, except they repent the Lord God will destroy them.

    כִּיkiforהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdהוֹגִיםho/GIMdo studyהֵםhemtheyבָּעֵתba/ETat the timeהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisלְהַשְׁמִידle/hash/MIDto destroyאֶת־חֵרוּתet-che/RUTthe libertyעַמְּךָam/me/KHAof your peopleכֹּה־אָמַרko-a/MARthus saithיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהוּאhuisנֶגֶדNE/gedcontrary toהַחֻקִּיםha/chuk/KIMthe statutesוְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִיםve/ham/mish/pa/TIMand judgmentsוְהַמִּצְוֹתve/ham/mits/VOTand commandmentsאֲשֶׁר־נָתַןa/SHER-na/TANwhich He gaveלְעַמּוֹ׃le/am/MOunto His people

    For behold, they do study at this time that they may destroy the liberty of thy people, (for thus saith the Lord) which is contrary to the statutes, and judgments, and commandments which he has given unto his people.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterקַבֵּלkab/BELreceivedאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaאֶת־דְּבָרוֹet-de/va/ROhis messageמִמַּלְאַךְmim/mal/AKHfrom the angelיְהוָהAdonaiof Adonaiוַיָּשׇׁבvay/YA/shovthat he returnedמְהֵרָהme/he/RAspeedilyלְאֶרֶץle/E/retsto the landעַמּוֹנִיהָהAm/mo/NI/haof Ammonihahוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand he enteredהָעִירָהha/I/rainto the cityבְּדֶרֶךְbe/DE/rekhby wayאַחֶרֶתa/CHE/retanotherאַףafyeaבַּדֶּרֶךְbad/DE/rekhby wayאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich wasמִנֶּגֶבmin/NE/gevsouthלְעִירle/IRof the cityעַמּוֹנִיהָה׃Am/mo/NI/haof Ammonihah

    Now it came to pass that after Alma had received his message from the angel of the Lord he returned speedily to the land of Ammonihah. And he entered the city by another way, yea, by the way which is on the south of the city of Ammonihah.

    וּבְבֹאוֹu/ve/vo/Oand as he enteredהָעִירָהha/I/rainto the cityוְהוּאve/HUand he wasרָעֵבra/EVan hungeredוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand he saidלְאִישׁle/ISHunto a manהֲתִתֵּןha/tit/TENwill you giveלְעֶבֶדle/E/vedto a servantעָנָוa/NAVhumbleלֵאלֹהִיםle/lo/HIMof Godמְעַטme/ATsomewhatאֹכֶל׃O/khelfood

    And as he entered the city he was an hungered, and he said to a man: Will ye give to an humble servant of God something to eat?

    And the man said unto him: I am a Nephite, and I know that thou art a holy prophet of God, for thou art the man whom an angel said in a vision: Thou shalt receive. Therefore, go with me into my house and I will impart unto thee of my food; and I know that thou wilt be a blessing unto me and my house.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּי־קִבֵּלki-kib/BELthat receivedהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manאוֹתוֹo/TOhimאֶל־בֵּיתוֹel-be/TOinto his houseוְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the nameהָאִישׁha/ISHof the manעֲמוּלֶקA/mu/lekwas Amulekוַיּוֹצֵאvay/yo/TSEand he brought forthלֶחֶםLE/chembreadוּבָשָׂרu/va/SARand meatוַיָּשֶׂםvay/YA/semand set themלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאַלְמָא׃AL/maAlma

    And it came to pass that the man received him into his house; and the man was called Amulek; and he brought forth bread and meat and set before Alma.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּי־אָכַלki-a/KHALthat ateאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaלֶחֶםLE/chembreadוַיִּשְׂבָּעvay/yis/BAand was filledוַיְבָרֶךְvay/VA/rekhand he blessedאֶת־עֲמוּלֶקet-A/mu/lekAmulekוְאֶת־בֵּיתוֹve/ET-be/TOand his houseוַיּוֹדvay/YODand gave thanksלֵאלֹהִים׃le/lo/HIMunto God

    And it came to pass that Alma ate bread and was filled; and he blessed Amulek and his house, and he gave thanks unto God.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterאׇכְלוֹokh/LOhe ateוְשׇׂבְעוֹve/sov/Oand was filledוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֶל־עֲמוּלֶקel-A/mu/lekunto Amulekאֲנִיa/NII amאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand amהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLthe highעַל־עֲדַתal-a/DATover the churchהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMof Godבְּכׇל־הָאָרֶץ׃be/KHOL-ha/A/retsthroughout the land

    And after he had eaten and was filled he said unto Amulek: I am Alma, and am the high priest over the church of God throughout the land.

24. 24

    וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdנִקְרֵאתִיnik/re/TII have been calledלִדְרֹשׁlid/ROSHto preachאֶת־דְּבַר־אֱלֹהִיםet-de/VAR-e/lo/HIMthe word of Godבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongכׇּל־הָעָםkol-ha/AMall the peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכְּפִיke/FIaccording toרוּחַRU/achthe spiritהַחָזוֹןha/cha/ZONof revelationוְהַנְּבוּאָהve/han/ne/vu/Aand prophecyוָאֱהִיva/e/HIand I wasבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisוְלֹאve/LOand notקִבְּלוּנִיkib/be/lu/NIreceived meכִּי־אִםki-imbutגֵּרְשׁוּנִיger/shu/NIthey cast me outוָאֶעֱמֹדva/e/e/MODand I was aboutלָתֵתla/TETto setעׇרְפִּיor/PImy backאֶל־הָאָרֶץel-ha/A/retstowards the landהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisלָנֶצַח׃la/NE/tsachforever

    And behold, I have been called to preach the word of God among all this people, according to the spirit of revelation and prophecy; and I was in this land and they would not receive me, but they cast me out and I was about to set my back towards this land forever.

25. 25

    אַךְakhbutהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdצֻוֵּיתִיtsuv/VE/tiI have been commandedלָשׁוּבla/SHUVthat I should turn backוּלְהִנָּבֵאu/le/hin/na/VEand prophesyלָעָםla/AMunto the peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisאַףafyeaלְהָעִידle/ha/IDto testifyבָּםbamagainst themעַל־עֲוֹנֹתֵיהֶם׃al-a/vo/no/te/HEMconcerning their iniquities

    But behold, I have been commanded that I should turn again and prophesy unto this people, yea, and to testify against them concerning their iniquities.

26. 26

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowעֲמוּלֶקA/mu/lekAmulekיַעַןYA/anbecauseהֶאֱכַלְתָּנִיhe/e/khal/ta/NIyou fed meוַאֲסַפְתָּנִיva/a/saf/ta/NIand taken me inבָּרוּךְba/RUKHblessedאָתָּהAT/taare youכִּיkiforהָיִיתִיha/YI/tiI wasרָעֵבra/EVan hungeredכִּיkiforצַמְתִּיTSAM/tiI fastedיָמִיםya/MIMdaysרַבִּים׃rab/BIMmany

    And now, Amulek, because thou hast fed me and taken me in, thou art blessed; for I was an hungered, for I had fasted many days.

27. 27

    וַיֵּשֶׁבvay/YE/shevand tarriedאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaיָמִיםya/MIMdaysרַבִּיםrab/BIMmanyעִם־עֲמוּלֶקim-A/mu/lekwith AmulekטֶרֶםTE/rembeforeהֵחֵלhe/CHELhe beganלִדְרֹשׁlid/ROSHto preachאֶל־הָעָם׃el-ha/AMunto the people

    And Alma tarried many days with Amulek before he began to preach unto the people.

28. 28

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatהוֹסִיפוּho/si/FUwaxed moreהָעָםha/AMthe peopleלִגְדֹּלlig/DOLgrossבַּעֲוֹנֹתֵיהֶם׃ba/a/vo/no/te/HEMin their iniquities

    And it came to pass that the people did wax more gross in their iniquities.

29. 29

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedדְבַר־יְהוָהde/VAR-Adonaithe word of Adonaiאֶל־אַלְמָאel-AL/maunto Almaלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingלֵךְlekhgoוְאָמַרְתָּve/a/mar/TAand sayגַּםgamalsoלְעַבְדִּיle/av/DIunto my servantעֲמוּלֶקA/mu/lekAmulekצֵאtsego forthוְהִנָּבֵאve/hin/na/VEand prophesyלָעָםla/AMunto the peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingשׁוּבוּSHU/vurepent youכִּי־כֹהki-khofor thusאָמַרa/MARsaithיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאִם־לֹאim-loexceptתָשׁוּבוּta/shu/VUyou repentאֶפְקֹדef/KODI will visitאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisבְּאַפִּיbe/ap/PIin my angerהֵןhenyeaוְלֹאve/LOand notאָשִׁיבa/SHIVwill I turn awayאֶת־חֲרוֹןet-cha/RONthe fiercenessאַפִּי׃ap/PIof my anger

    And the word came to Alma, saying: Go; and also say unto my servant Amulek, go forth and prophesy unto this people, saying—Repent ye, for thus saith the Lord, except ye repent I will visit this people in mine anger; yea, and I will not turn my fierce anger away.

30. 30

    וַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went forthאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaוְגַםve/GAMand alsoעֲמוּלֶקA/mu/lekAmulekבְּתוֹךְbe/TOKHamongהָעָםha/AMthe peopleלְהַגִּידle/hag/GIDto declareלָהֶםla/HEMunto themאֶת־דִּבְרֵיet-div/REthe wordsאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godוַיִּמָּלְאוּvay/yim/ma/le/Uand they were filled withרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁ׃RU/ach-Hak/KO/deshthe Holy Ghost

    And Alma went forth, and also Amulek, among the people, to declare the words of God unto them; and they were filled with the Holy Ghost.

31. 31

    וַיִּנָּתֵןvay/yin/na/TENand was givenלָהֶםla/HEMthemכֹּחַKO/achpowerעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERinsomuch thatלֹא־יָכְלוּlo-ya/khe/LUthey could notלְהַחֲזִיקָםle/ha/cha/zi/KAMconfine themבְּבָתֵּיbe/vat/TEin the housesכְלָאִיםkhe/la/IMof dungeonsוְגַםve/GAMand alsoלֹא־יָכֹלlo-ya/KHOLwas not possibleאִישׁishthat any manלַהֲרָגָםla/ha/ra/GAMcould slay themאַךְakhneverthelessלֹאlonotעָשׂוּa/SUdid they exerciseבְכֹחָםve/kho/CHAMtheir powerעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilנֶאֶסְרוּne/es/RUthey were boundבַּזִּקִּיםbaz/zik/KIMin bandsוְהֻשְׁלְכוּve/hush/le/KHUand castלְבֵיתle/VETintoהַכֶּלֶאhak/KE/leprisonוְזֹאתve/ZOTand thisהָיְתָהha/ye/TAwas doneלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיַרְאֶהyar/Emight showיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֶת־כֹּחוֹet-ko/CHOHis powerבָּם׃bamin them

    And they had power given unto them, insomuch that they could not be confined in dungeons; neither was it possible that any man could slay them; nevertheless they did not exercise their power until they were bound in bands and cast into prison. Now, this was done that the Lord might show forth his power in them.

32. 32

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatיָצְאוּya/tse/Uthey went forthוַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand beganלִדְרֹשׁlid/ROSHto preachוּלְהִנָּבֵאu/le/hin/na/VEand to prophesyלָעָםla/AMunto the peopleכְּפִיke/FIaccording toהָרוּחַha/RU/achthe Spiritוְהַכֹּחַve/hak/KO/achand powerאֲשֶׁר־נָתַןa/SHER-na/TANwhich gaveלָהֶםla/HEMthemיְהוָה׃AdonaiAdonai

    And it came to pass that they went forth and began to preach and to prophesy unto the people, according to the spirit and power which the Lord had given them.
