   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedעַתָּהat/TAnowכִּיkithatחֶפְצֵנוּchef/tse/NUour desireהַשֵּׁנִיhash/she/NIthe nextהָיָהha/YAwasלָקַחַתla/KA/chatto takeאֶת־הָעִירet-ha/IRthe cityמַנְטִיMAN/tiof Mantiאַךְakhbutלֹא־הָיָהlo-ha/YAthere was notבְכֹחֵנוּve/kho/che/NUin our powerלְהוֹצִיאָםle/ho/tsi/AMto lead them outמִמֶּנָּהmim/MEN/nafrom itבִּגְדוּדֵינוּbig/du/de/NUwith our bandsהַקְּטַנִּיםhak/ke/tan/NIMsmallכִּיkiforזָכְרוּza/khe/RUthey rememberedאֶת־אֲשֶׁרet-a/SHERthat whichעָשִׂינוּa/SI/nuwe didעַד־הֵנָּהad-HEN/nahithertoוְלֹאve/LOand notיָכֹלְנוּya/khol/NUcould weלְפַתּוֹתָםle/fat/to/TAMto decoy themלָצֵאתla/TSETto go outמִמְּצוּדוֹתֵיהֶם׃mim/me/tsu/do/te/HEMfrom their strongholds

   And behold, now it came to pass that our next object was to obtain the city of Manti; but behold, there was no way that we could lead them out of the city by our small bands. For behold, they remembered that which we had hitherto done; therefore we could not decoy them away from their strongholds.

   וְהֵםve/HEMand theyרַבִּיםrab/BIMwere more numerousמִצְּבָאֵנוּmits/tse/va/e/NUthan our armyעַד־מְאֹדad-me/ODexceedinglyוְלֹאve/LOand notהֵעַזְנוּhe/az/NUwe durstלָצֵאתla/TSETto go forthוּלְהִלָּחֵםu/le/hil/la/CHEMand to fightבָּםbamthemבְּמִבְצְרֵיהֶם׃be/miv/tse/re/HEMin their strongholds

   And they were so much more numerous than was our army that we durst not go forth and attack them in their strongholds.

   Yea, and it became expedient that we should employ our men to the maintaining those parts of the land which we had regained of our possessions; therefore it became expedient that we should wait, that we might receive more strength from the land of Zarahemla and also a new supply of provisions.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatשָׁלַחְתִּיsha/LACH/tiI sentמַלְאָכִיםmal/a/KHIMmessengersאֶל־מֹשֵׁלel-mo/SHELto the governorאַרְצֵנוּar/TSE/nuof our landלְהוֹדִיעוֹle/ho/di/Oto acquaint himאֶת־דִּבְרֵיet-div/REwith the affairsעַמֵּנוּam/ME/nuof our peopleוַנְּחַכֶּהvan/ne/chak/KEand we waitedלְקַבֵּלle/kab/BELto receiveצֵידָהtse/DAprovisionsוְעֹזve/OZand strengthמֵאֶרֶץme/E/retsfrom the landזָרַהֶמְלָה׃Za/ra/HEM/laof Zarahemla

   And it came to pass that I thus did send an embassy to the governor of our land, to acquaint him concerning the affairs of our people. And it came to pass that we did wait to receive provisions and strength from the land of Zarahemla.

   אַךְakhbutהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdמְעַטme/ATlittleהוֹעִילho/ILprofitedלָנוּLA/nuusהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARthe matterכִּיkiforגַם־הַלָּמָנִיםgam-Hal/la/ma/NIMthe Lamanites alsoקִבְּלוּkib/be/LUwere receivingכֹּחַKO/achstrengthגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreatיוֹםyomdayיוֹםyomby dayוְגַםve/GAMand alsoצֵידָהtse/DAprovisionsרַבָּהrab/BAmanyוְכֵןve/KHENand thusהָיוּha/YUwereנְסִבּוֹתֵינוּne/sib/bo/te/NUour circumstancesבָּעֵתba/ETat the timeהַהִיא׃ha/HIthat

   But behold, this did profit us but little; for the Lamanites were also receiving great strength from day to day, and also many provisions; and thus were our circumstances at this period of time.

   וַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand wereהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesיֹצְאִיםyots/IMgoing forthעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuagainst usמֵעֵתme/ETfrom timeלְעֵתle/ETto timeמְבַקְשִׁיםme/vak/SHIMseekingלְהַשְׁמִידֵנוּle/hash/mi/DE/nuto destroy usבְּעׇרְמָהbe/or/MAby stratagemאַךְakhbutלֹאlonotיָכֹלְנוּya/khol/NUcould weלְהִלָּחֵםle/hil/la/CHEMto fightבָּםbamwith themבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofמִקְלָטֵיהֶםmik/la/te/HEMtheir retreatsוּמְצוּדוֹתֵיהֶם׃u/me/tsu/do/te/HEMand their strongholds

   And the Lamanites were sallying forth against us from time to time, resolving by stratagem to destroy us; nevertheless we could not come to battle with them, because of their retreats and their strongholds.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatחִכִּינוּchik/ki/NUwe waitedבַּמָּצוֹקbam/ma/TSOKin the distressהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisיְרָחִיםye/ra/CHIMmonthsרַבִּיםrab/BIMmanyעַד־כִּיad-kieven untilעָמַדְנוּa/mad/NUwe were aboutלִגְוֹעַlig/VO/ato perishמֵחֹסֶרme/CHO/serfor the wantאֹכֶל׃O/khelof food

   And it came to pass that we did wait in these difficult circumstances for the space of many months, even until we were about to perish for the want of food.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatקִבַּלְנוּkib/bal/NUwe receivedצֵידָהtse/DAprovisionsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהוּבְאָהhuv/Awas broughtאֵלֵינוּe/LE/nuunto usבְּמִשְׁמַרbe/mish/MARunder the guardצְבָאtse/VAof an armyאַלְפַּיִםal/PA/yimof two thousandאִישׁishmenלְעֶזְרָתֵנוּle/ez/ra/TE/nuto our assistanceוְזֹאתve/ZOTand thisכׇּל־הָעֶזְרָהkol-ha/ez/RAis all the assistanceאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichקִבַּלְנוּkib/bal/NUwe receivedלְהָגֵןle/ha/GENto defendעַל־נַפְשֵׁנוּal-naf/SHE/nuourselvesוְעַל־אַרְצֵנוּve/AL-ar/TSE/nuand our countryמִנְּפֹלmin/ne/FOLfrom fallingבִּידֵיbi/DEinto the handsאוֹיְבֵינוּoy/VE/nuof our enemiesוּלְהִלָּחֵםu/le/hil/la/CHEMand to contendבְּאוֹיֵבbe/o/YEVwith an enemyאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichאֵין־לוֹen-lohad noמִסְפָּר׃mis/PARnumber

   But it came to pass that we did receive food, which was guarded to us by an army of two thousand men to our assistance; and this is all the assistance which we did receive, to defend ourselves and our country from falling into the hands of our enemies, yea, to contend with an enemy which was innumerable.

   וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowלֹא־יָדַעְנוּlo-ya/DA/nuwe knew notאֶת־סִבַּתet-sib/BATthe causeמְצוּקָתֵנוּme/tsu/ka/te/NUof our distressאוֹoorמַדּוּעַmad/DU/awhyלֹאlonotשָׁלְחוּsha/le/CHUthey sentלָנוּLA/nuunto usעֶזְרָהez/RAhelpרַבָּהrab/BAmuchיוֹתֵרyo/TERmoreלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeהִתְעַצַּבְנוּhit/ats/tsav/NUwe were grievedוְגַםve/GAMand alsoנִמְלֵאנוּnim/le/NUwe were filledפַחַדFA/chadwith fearפֶּן־יָבוֹאוּpen-ya/VO/ulest should comeמִשְׁפְּטֵיmish/pe/TEthe judgmentsאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godעַל־אַרְצֵנוּal-ar/TSE/nuupon our landלְהַכְרִיתֵנוּle/hakh/ri/te/NUto cut us offוּלְהַשְׁמִידֵנוּu/le/hash/mi/DE/nuand to destroy usכָּלִיל׃ka/LILutterly

   And now the cause of these our embarrassments, or the cause why they did not send more strength unto us, we knew not; therefore we were grieved and also filled with fear, lest by any means the judgments of God should come upon our land, to our overthrow and utter destruction.

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeשָׁפַכְנוּsha/fakh/NUwe poured outאֶת־נַפְשֵׁנוּet-naf/SHE/nuour soulבִּתְפִלָּהbit/fil/LAin prayerלֵאלֹהִיםle/lo/HIMto Godלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיְחַזְּקֵנוּye/chaz/ze/ke/NUhe would strengthen usוְיַצִּילֵנוּve/yats/tsi/LE/nuand deliver usמִיַּדmiy/YADout of the handאוֹיְבֵינוּoy/VE/nuof our enemiesוְגַםve/GAMand alsoיִתֵּן־לָנוּyit/TEN-LA/nuhe would give usכֹּחַKO/achstrengthלְהַחֲזִיקle/ha/cha/ZIKto retainבְּעָרֵינוּbe/a/re/NUour citiesוּבְאַרְצוֹתֵינוּu/ve/ar/tso/te/NUand our landsוּבִרְכוּשֵׁנוּu/vir/khu/she/NUand our possessionsלְמִחְיַתle/mich/YATfor the supportעַמֵּנוּ׃am/ME/nuof our people

    Therefore we did pour out our souls in prayer to God, that he would strengthen us and deliver us out of the hands of our enemies, yea, and also give us strength that we might retain our cities, and our lands, and our possessions, for the support of our people.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatפָּקַדpa/KADvisitedיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהֵינוּe/lo/HE/nuour Godאוֹתָנוּo/TA/nuusבְּדָבָרbe/da/VARwith a promiseכִּיkithatיַצִּילֵנוּyats/tsi/LE/nuhe would deliver usוַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand he spokeשָׁלוֹםsha/LOMpeaceאֶל־נַפְשֵׁנוּel-naf/SHE/nuto our soulsוַיִּתֶּן־לָנוּvay/YIT/ten-LA/nuand granted usאֱמוּנָהe/mu/NAfaithגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatוַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand madeלָנוּLA/nufor usתִּקְוָהtik/VAhopeלִישׁוּעָתוֹ׃li/shu/a/TOfor his deliverance

    Yea, and it came to pass that the Lord our God did visit us with assurances that he would deliver us; yea, insomuch that he did speak peace to our souls, and did grant unto us great faith, and did cause us that we should hope for our deliverance in him.

    וַנִּתְחַזֵּקvan/nit/chaz/ZEKand we took courageבְּכֹחֵנוּbe/kho/che/NUwith our forceהַקָּטָןhak/ka/TANsmallאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichקִבַּלְנוּkib/bal/NUwe receivedוַנִּתְאַמֵּץvan/nit/am/METSand were fixedבְּלִבֵּנוּbe/lib/BE/nuin our heartלִגְבֹּרlig/BORto conquerעַל־אוֹיְבֵינוּal-oy/VE/nuover our enemiesוּלְהַחֲזִיקu/le/ha/cha/ZIKand to maintainבְּאַרְצוֹתֵינוּbe/ar/tso/te/NUour landsוּבִרְכוּשֵׁנוּu/vir/khu/she/NUand our possessionsוּבְנָשֵׁינוּu/ve/na/SHE/nuand our wivesוּבְיַלְדֵינוּu/ve/yal/de/NUand our childrenוּבִדְבַרu/vid/VARand the causeדְּרוֹרֵנוּ׃de/ro/re/NUof our liberty

    And we did take courage with our small force which we had received, and were fixed with a determination to conquer our enemies, and to maintain our lands, and our possessions, and our wives, and our children, and the cause of our liberty.

    וַנֵּצֵאvan/ne/TSEand we went forthבְּכׇל־כֹּחֵנוּbe/KHOL-ko/che/NUwith all our mightנֶגֶדNE/gedagainstהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoבְּעִירbe/IRwere in the cityמַנְטִיMAN/tiof Mantiוַנַּטvan/NATand we pitchedאֶת־אׇהֳלֵינוּet-o/ho/le/NUour tentsעַל־פְּנֵיal-pe/NEbyהַמִּדְבָּרham/mid/BARthe wildernessאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichקָרוֹבka/ROVwas nearלָעִיר׃la/IRto the city

    And thus we did go forth with all our might against the Lamanites, who were in the city of Manti; and we did pitch our tents by the wilderness side, which was near to the city.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedמִמׇּחֳרָתmim/mo/cho/RATon the morrowכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenרָאוּra/Usawהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesכִּיkithatחָנִינוּcha/ni/NUwe campedבִּגְבוּלbig/VULin the borderהַמִּדְבָּרham/mid/BARof the wildernessאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichקָרוֹבka/ROVwas nearלָעִירla/IRto the cityוַיִּשְׁלְחוּvay/yish/le/CHUthey sent outמְרַגְּלִיםme/rag/ge/LIMspiesסְבִיבוֹתֵינוּse/vi/vo/te/NUround about usלָדַעַתla/DA/atto knowאֶת־מִסְפַּרet-mis/PARthe numberוְעֹזve/OZand strengthצְבָאֵנוּ׃tse/va/e/NUof our army

    And it came to pass that on the morrow, that when the Lamanites saw that we were in the borders by the wilderness which was near the city, that they sent out their spies round about us that they might discover the number and the strength of our army.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenרָאוּra/Uthey sawכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notחֲזָקִיםcha/za/KIMwere strongאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweכְּמִסְפָּרֵנוּke/mis/pa/re/NUaccording to our numberוַיִּירְאוּvay/yi/re/Uand they were afraidפֶּן־נַכְרִיתpen-nakh/RITlest we should cut offאוֹתָםo/TAMthemמִמַּשְׁעָנָםmim/mash/a/NAMfrom their supportאִם־לֹאim-loexceptיֵצְאוּyets/Uthey should come outלְהִלָּחֵםle/hil/la/CHEMto battleבָּנוּBA/nuagainst usוּלְהָמִיתֵנוּu/le/ha/mi/te/NUand kill usוְגַםve/GAMand alsoחָשְׁבוּcha/she/VUthey supposedכִּיkithatיוּכְלוּyukh/LUthey couldלְהַשְׁמִידֵנוּle/hash/mi/DE/nudestroy usבְּנָקֵלbe/na/KELeasilyבַּהֲמוֹנֵיהֶםba/ha/mo/ne/HEMwith their hostsהָרַבִּיםha/rab/BIMthe numerousלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeהֵחֵלּוּhe/CHEL/luthey beganלְהִתְכּוֹנֵןle/hit/ko/NENto make preparationsלָצֵאתla/TSETto come outנֶגְדֵּנוּneg/de/NUagainst usלַמִּלְחָמָה׃lam/mil/cha/MAto battle

    And it came to pass that when they saw that we were not strong, according to our numbers, and fearing that we should cut them off from their support except they should come out to battle against us and kill us, and also supposing that they could easily destroy us with their numerous hosts, therefore they began to make preparations to come out against us to battle.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenרָאִינוּra/I/nuwe sawכִּיkithatמִתְכּוֹנְנִיםmit/kon/NIMwere making preparationsהֵםhemtheyלָצֵאתla/TSETto come outנֶגְדֵּנוּneg/de/NUagainst usוָאֹמַרva/o/MARand I badeלְגִדle/GIDunto Gidלְהֵחָבֵאle/he/cha/VEto hide himselfעִם־אֲנָשִׁיםim-a/na/SHIMwith menמְעַטִּיםme/at/TIMfewבַּמִּדְבָּרbam/mid/BARin the wildernessוְגַםve/GAMand alsoלְטֵאוֹמְנֶרle/Te/OM/nerunto Teomnerוַאֲנָשָׁיוva/a/na/SHAYVand his menלְהֵחָבֵאle/he/cha/VEto hide themselvesשָׁם׃shamthere

    And when we saw that they were making preparations to come out against us, behold, I caused that Gid, with a small number of men, should secrete himself in the wilderness, and also that Teomner and a small number of men should secrete themselves also in the wilderness.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand wasגִדGidGidוַאֲנָשָׁיוva/a/na/SHAYVand his menמִיָּמִיןmiy/ya/MINon the rightוְהָאֲחֵרִיםve/ha/a/che/RIMand the othersמִשְּׂמֹאלmis/se/MOLon the leftוְאַחֲרֵיve/a/cha/REand afterהִסְתַּתְּרָםhis/tat/te/RAMhid themselvesנִשְׁאַרְתִּיnish/AR/tiI remainedעִם־יֶתֶרim-YE/terwith the remainderצְבָאִיtse/va/Iof my armyבַּמָּקוֹםbam/ma/KOMin the placeהַהוּאha/HUthat sameאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhereנָטִינוּna/ti/NUwe pitchedבּוֹboin itאֶת־אׇהֳלֵינוּet-o/ho/le/NUour tentsבָּרִאשׁוֹנָהba/ri/sho/NAfirstלְעֵתle/ETagainst the timeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhenיֵצְאוּyets/Ushould come outהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesלַמִּלְחָמָה׃lam/mil/cha/MAto battle

    Now Gid and his men were on the right and the others on the left; and when they had thus secreted themselves, behold, I remained, with the remainder of my army, in that same place where we had first pitched our tents against the time that the Lamanites should come out to battle.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatיָצְאוּya/tse/Ucame outהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesבִּצְבָאָםbits/va/AMwith their armyהָרַבha/RAVnumerousנֶגְדֵּנוּneg/de/NUagainst usוְכַאֲשֶׁרve/kha/a/SHERand whenבָּאוּBA/uthey cameוַיַּעַמְדוּvay/ya/am/DUand were aboutלִנְפֹּלlin/POLto fallעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuupon usבַּחֶרֶבba/CHE/revwith the swordצִוִּיתִיtsiv/VI/tiI commandedאֶת־אֲנָשַׁיet-a/na/SHAYmy menאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoאִתִּיit/TIwere with meלָסוּגla/SUGto retreatאֶל־הַמִּדְבָּר׃el-ham/mid/BARinto the wilderness

    And it came to pass that the Lamanites did come out with their numerous army against us. And when they had come and were about to fall upon us with the sword, I caused that my men, those who were with me, should retreat into the wilderness.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatרָדְפוּra/de/FUpursuedהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאַחֲרֵינוּa/cha/RE/nuafter usבִּמְהֵרָהbim/he/RAwith speedרַבָּהrab/BAgreatכִּיkiforחָפְצוּcha/fe/TSUthey were desirousמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyלְהַשִּׂיגֵנוּle/has/si/ge/NUto overtake usלַהֲמִיתֵנוּla/ha/mi/TE/nuto put us to deathוַיִּרְדְּפוּvay/yir/de/FUand they pursuedאַחֲרֵינוּa/cha/RE/nuafter usאֶל־הַמִּדְבָּרel-ham/mid/BARinto the wildernessוַנַּעֲבֹרvan/na/a/VORand we passedבֵּיןbenbetweenגִּדGidGidוְטֵאוֹמְנֶרve/Te/OM/nerand Teomnerוְלֹאve/LOand notנוֹדְעוּnod/Uwere they knownלַלָּמָנִים׃lal/La/ma/NIMto the Lamanites

    And it came to pass that the Lamanites did follow after us with great speed, for they were exceedingly desirous to overtake us that they might slay us; therefore they did follow us into the wilderness; and we did pass by in the midst of Gid and Teomner, insomuch that they were not discovered by the Lamanites.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenעָבְרוּa/ve/RUpassed byהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאוֹoorכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenעָבַרa/VARpassed byהַצָּבָאhats/tsa/VAthe armyוַיָּקוּמוּvay/ya/KU/muand rose upגִדGidGidוְטֵאוֹמְנֶרve/Te/OM/nerand Teomnerמִמְּקוֹמוֹתmim/me/ko/MOTfrom the placesמִסְתּוֹרָםmis/to/RAMof their concealmentוַיַּכְרִיתוּvay/yakh/ri/TUand cut offאֶת־מְרַגְּלֵיet-me/rag/ge/LEthe spiesהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TIthat notיָשׁוּבוּya/SHU/vuthey should returnאֶל־הָעִיר׃el-ha/IRto the city

    And it came to pass that when the Lamanites had passed by, or when the army had passed by, Gid and Teomner did rise up from their secret places, and did cut off the spies of the Lamanites that they should not return to the city.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenהִכְרִיתוּםhikh/ri/TUMthey cut them offוַיָּרוּצוּvay/ya/RU/tsuthey ranאֶל־הָעִירel-ha/IRto the cityוַיִּפְּלוּvay/yip/pe/LUand fellעַל־הַשֹּׁמְרִיםal-hash/shom/RIMupon the guardsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהֻשְׁאֲרוּhush/a/RUwere leftלִשְׁמֹרlish/MORto guardאֶת־הָעִירet-ha/IRthe cityוַיַּשְׁמִידוּםvay/yash/mi/DUMand destroyed themוַיִּירְשׁוּvay/yi/re/SHUand took possessionאֶת־הָעִיר׃et-ha/IRof the city

    And it came to pass that when they had cut them off, they ran to the city and fell upon the guards who were left to guard the city, insomuch that they did destroy them and did take possession of the city.

22. 22

    וְזֹאתve/ZOTand thisנַעֲשְׂתָהna/a/se/TAwas doneכִּיkibecauseנָתְנוּna/te/NUsufferedהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesלְכׇל־צְבָאָםle/KHOL-tse/va/AMall their armyלְהִמָּשֵׁךְle/him/ma/SHEKHto be led awayאֶל־הַמִּדְבָּרel-ham/mid/BARinto the wildernessמִלְּבַדmil/le/VADsaveשֹׁמְרִיםshom/RIMguardsמְעַטִּים׃me/at/TIMa few

    Now this was done because the Lamanites did suffer their whole army, save a few guards only, to be led away into the wilderness.

23. 23

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatיָרְשׁוּya/re/SHUobtained possessionגִדGidGidוְטֵאוֹמְנֶרve/Te/OM/nerand Teomnerבַּדֶּרֶךְbad/DE/rekhin the wayהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisאֶת־מְצוּדוֹתֵיהֶםet-me/tsu/do/te/HEMtheir strongholdsוַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatהָלַכְנוּha/LAKH/nuwe wentלְדַרְכֵּנוּle/dar/ke/NUon our wayאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterנׇסְעֵנוּnos/e/NUwe traveledהַרְבֵּהhar/BEmuchבַּמִּדְבָּרbam/mid/BARin the wildernessדֶּרֶךְDE/rekhtowardsאֶרֶץE/retsthe landזָרַהֶמְלָה׃Za/ra/HEM/laof Zarahemla

    And it came to pass that Gid and Teomner by this means had obtained possession of their strongholds. And it came to pass that we took our course, after having traveled much in the wilderness towards the land of Zarahemla.

24. 24

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenרָאוּra/Usawהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesכִּיkithatצֹעֲדִיםtso/a/DIMwere marchingהֵםhemtheyדֶּרֶךְDE/rekhtowardsאֶרֶץE/retsthe landזָרַהֶמְלָהZa/ra/HEM/laof Zarahemlaוַיִּירְאוּvay/yi/re/Uthey were afraidמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyפֶּן־תֵּחָשֵׁבpen-te/cha/SHEVlest should be devisedמְזִמָּהme/zim/MAa planלְהוֹבִילָםle/ho/vi/LAMto lead themלְכִלָּיוֹןle/khil/la/YONto destructionלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeהֵחֵלּוּhe/CHEL/luthey beganלָסוּגla/SUGto retreatעוֹדodagainאֶל־הַמִּדְבָּרel-ham/mid/BARinto the wildernessבַּדֶּרֶךְbad/DE/rekhin the wayאֲשֶׁר־בָּאוּa/SHER-BA/uwhich they cameבָהּ׃vaby it

    And when the Lamanites saw that they were marching towards the land of Zarahemla, they were exceedingly afraid, lest there was a plan laid to lead them on to destruction; therefore they began to retreat into the wilderness again, yea, even back by the same way which they had come.

25. 25

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it wasלַיְלָהLAY/lanightוַיַּטּוּvay/yat/TUand they pitchedאֶת־אׇהֳלֵיהֶםet-o/ho/le/HEMtheir tentsכִּיkiforחָשְׁבוּcha/she/VUsupposedשָׂרֵיsa/REthe captainsצְבָאוֹתtse/va/OTof the armiesהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesכִּיkithatעֲיֵפִיםa/ye/FIMwere wearyהַנֶּפִיִּיםhan/Ne/fiy/YIMthe Nephitesמִמַּסָּעָםmim/mas/sa/AMbecause of their marchוּבְחׇשְׁבָםu/ve/chosh/VAMand supposingכִּיkithatהִבְרִיחוּhiv/RI/chuthey droveאֶת־כׇּל־צְבָאָםet-kol-tse/va/AMtheir whole armyלֹאlonotשָׁתוּSHA/tuthey setלִבָּםlib/BAMtheir heartאֶל־עִירel-irunto the cityמַנְטִי׃MAN/tiof Manti

    And behold, it was night and they did pitch their tents, for the chief captains of the Lamanites had supposed that the Nephites were weary because of their march; and supposing that they had driven their whole army therefore they took no thought concerning the city of Manti.

26. 26

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it wasבַלַּיְלָהval/LAY/lain the nightוָאֲצַוva/a/TSAVand I commandedכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notיִישְׁנוּyi/she/NUshould sleepאֲנָשַׁיa/na/SHAYmy menכִּי־אִםki-imbutיִצְעֲדוּyits/a/DUthey should marchבְּדֶרֶךְbe/DE/rekhby a wayאַחֶרֶתa/CHE/retanotherאֶל־אֶרֶץel-E/retstowards the landמַנְטִי׃MAN/tiof Manti

    Now it came to pass that when it was night, I caused that my men should not sleep, but that they should march forward by another way towards the land of Manti.

27. 27

    וּבַעֲבוּרu/va/a/VURand becauseמַסָּעֵנוּmas/sa/e/NUof our marchבַּלַּיְלָהbal/LAY/lain the nightהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdמִמׇּחֳרָתmim/mo/cho/RATon the morrowהָיִינוּha/YI/nuwe wereמֵעֵבֶרme/E/verbeyondלַלָּמָנִיםlal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesוַנַּגִּיעַvan/nag/GI/aand we arrivedלִפְנֵיהֶםlif/ne/HEMbefore themאֶל־עִירel-irat the cityמַנְטִי׃MAN/tiof Manti

    And because of this our march in the night-time, behold, on the morrow we were beyond the Lamanites, insomuch that we did arrive before them at the city of Manti.

28. 28

    וְכֵןve/KHENand thusהָיָהha/YAit wasכִּיkithatבַּתַּחְבּוּלָהbat/tach/bu/LAby the stratagemהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisיָרַשְׁנוּya/RASH/nuwe took possessionאֶת־עִירet-irof the cityמַנְטִיMAN/tiof Mantiבְּלֹאbe/LOwithoutשְׁפֹךְshe/FOKHthe sheddingדָּם׃damof blood

    And thus it came to pass, that by this stratagem we did take possession of the city of Manti without the shedding of blood.

29. 29

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenהִגִּיעוּhig/GI/uarrivedצִבְאוֹתtsiv/OTthe armiesהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesקָרוֹבka/ROVnearלָעִירla/IRto the cityוַיִּרְאוּvay/yir/Uand sawכִּיkithatנְכוֹנִיםne/kho/NIMwere preparedאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweלִקְרָאתָםlik/ra/TAMto meet themוַיִּתְמְהוּvay/yit/me/HUthey were astonishedמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyוַיִּפֹּלvay/yip/POLand fellעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themפַּחַדPA/chadfearגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreatוַיָּנוּסוּvay/ya/NU/suand they fledאֶל־הַמִּדְבָּר׃el-ham/mid/BARinto the wilderness

    And it came to pass that when the armies of the Lamanites did arrive near the city, and saw that we were prepared to meet them, they were astonished exceedingly and struck with great fear, insomuch that they did flee into the wilderness.

30. 30

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatנָסוּNA/sufledצִבְאוֹתtsiv/OTthe armiesהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesמִכׇּל־הַחֵלֶקmik/KOL-ha/CHE/lekout of all the quarterהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisמִן־הָאָרֶץmin-ha/A/retsof the landאַךְakhbutהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUthey carriedעִמָּםim/MAMwith themנָשִׁיםna/SHIMwomenוָטַףva/TAFand childrenרַבִּיםrab/BIMmanyמִן־הָאָרֶץ׃min-ha/A/retsout of the land

    Yea, and it came to pass that the armies of the Lamanites did flee out of all this quarter of the land. But behold, they have carried with them many women and children out of the land.

31. 31

    וְכׇל־הֶעָרִיםve/KHOL-he/a/RIMand all the citiesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUtookהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesהִנָּםhin/NAMbehold theyבְּיָדֵינוּbe/ya/DE/nuare in our handבָּעֵתba/ETat the timeהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisוַאֲבוֹתֵינוּva/a/vo/TE/nuand our fathersוְנָשֵׁינוּve/na/SHE/nuand our womenוִילָדֵינוּvi/la/de/NUand our childrenשָׁבִיםsha/VIMare returningאֶל־בָּתֵּיהֶםel-bat/te/HEMto their housesזוּלַתzu/LATsaveאֵלֶּהEL/lethoseאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoנִשְׁבּוּnish/BUhave been taken captiveוְהוּבְלוּve/huv/LUand carriedבְּיַדbe/YADby the handהַלָּמָנִים׃hal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanites

    And those cities which had been taken by the Lamanites, all of them are at this period of time in our possession; and our fathers and our women and our children are returning to their homes, all save it be those who have been taken prisoners and carried off by the Lamanites.

32. 32

    אַךְakhbutהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdצִבְאוֹתֵינוּtsiv/o/te/NUour armiesקְטַנִּיםke/tan/NIMare smallמִלְּהַחֲזִיקmil/le/ha/cha/ZIKto maintainבְּעָרִיםbe/a/RIMcitiesוּרְכוּשׁu/re/KHUSHand possessionsרַבravgreatכָּזֶה׃ka/ZEso

    But behold, our armies are small to maintain so great a number of cities and so great possessions.

33. 33

    אַךְakhbutהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdבּוֹטְחִיםbot/CHIMtrustאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweבֵּאלֹהֵינוּbe/lo/HE/nuin our Godאֲשֶׁר־נָתַןa/SHER-na/TANwho gaveלָנוּLA/nuusתְּשׁוּעָהte/shu/Avictoryעַל־הָאֲרָצוֹתal-ha/a/ra/TSOTover the landsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatיָרַשְׁנוּya/RASH/nuwe obtainedאֶת־הֶעָרִיםet-he/a/RIMthe citiesוְהָאֲרָצוֹתve/ha/a/ra/TSOTand the landsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהָיוּha/YUwereלָנוּ׃LA/nuours

    But behold, we trust in our God who has given us victory over those lands, insomuch that we have obtained those cities and those lands, which were our own.

34. 34

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowלֹא־יָדַעְנוּlo-ya/DA/nuwe do not knowמַדּוּעַmad/DU/awhyאֵיןennotהַמֶּמְשָׁלָהham/mem/sha/LAthe governmentנוֹתֶנֶתno/TE/netdoes grantלָנוּLA/nuusעוֹדodmoreכֹּחַKO/achstrengthוְגַםve/GAMand alsoלֹא־יָדְעוּlo-ya/de/Uthey do not knowהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoעָלוּa/LUcame upאֵלֵינוּe/LE/nuunto usמַדּוּעַmad/DU/awhyלֹאlonotקִבַּלְנוּkib/bal/NUwe receivedכֹּחַKO/achstrengthרַבravgreatיוֹתֵר׃yo/TERmore

    Now we do not know the cause that the government does not grant us more strength; neither do those men who came up unto us know why we have not received greater strength.

35. 35

    הִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdלֹא־יָדַעְנוּlo-ya/DA/nuwe know notאִם־לֹאim-lowhether notהִצְלַחְתֶּםhits/lach/TEMyou prosperedוּמְשַׁכְתֶּםu/me/shakh/TEMand you drewאֶת־הַכֹּחוֹתet-hak/ko/CHOTthe forcesאֶל־הַחֵלֶקel-ha/CHE/lekinto the quarterהַהוּאha/HUthatמִן־הָאָרֶץmin-ha/A/retsof the landוְאִם־כֵּןve/IM-kenand if soלֹאlonotנַחְפֹּץnach/POTSwe desireלְהִתְלוֹנֵן׃le/hit/lo/NENto murmur

    Behold, we do not know but what ye are unsuccessful, and ye have drawn away the forces into that quarter of the land; if so, we do not desire to murmur.

36. 36

    וְאִם־לֹאve/IM-loand if notכֵןkhensoהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdיְרֵאִיםye/re/IMfearאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweפֶּן־יֵשׁpen-yeshlest there beמַחֲלֹקֶתma/cha/LO/keta factionבַּמֶּמְשָׁלָהbam/mem/sha/LAin the governmentוְלָכֵןve/la/KHENand thereforeאֵינָםe/NAMthey are notשׁוֹלְחִיםshol/CHIMsendingעוֹדodmoreאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenלְעֶזְרָתֵנוּle/ez/ra/TE/nuto our assistanceכִּיkiforיוֹדְעִיםyod/IMknowאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweכִּי־רַבִּיםki-rab/BIMthat are more numerousהֵםhemtheyמֵאֲשֶׁרme/a/SHERthan whatשָׁלְחוּ׃sha/le/CHUthey sent

    And if it is not so, behold, we fear that there is some faction in the government, that they do not send more men to our assistance; for we know that they are more numerous than that which they have sent.

37. 37

    אַךְakhbutהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאַחַתa/CHAToneהִיאhiit isבּוֹטְחִיםbot/CHIMtrustאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweכִּיkithatאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodיַצִּילֵנוּyats/tsi/LE/nuwill deliver usעַל־רִפְיוֹןal-rif/YONnotwithstanding the weaknessצִבְאוֹתֵינוּtsiv/o/te/NUof our armiesוְיַצִּילֵנוּve/yats/tsi/LE/nuand deliver usמִיַּדmiy/YADout of the handאוֹיְבֵינוּ׃oy/VE/nuof our enemies

    But, behold, it mattereth not—we trust God will deliver us, notwithstanding the weakness of our armies, yea, and deliver us out of the hands of our enemies.

38. 38

    הִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdזֹאתzotthis isאַחֲרִיתa/cha/RITthe latter endשְׁנַתshe/NATof the yearעֶשְׂרִיםes/RIMof twentyוָתֵשַׁעva/TE/shaand nineוַאֲנַחְנוּva/a/NACH/nuand we areיוֹרְשִׁיםyor/SHIMpossessingאֶת־אַרְצוֹתֵינוּet-ar/tso/te/NUour landsוְהַלָּמָנִיםve/hal/La/ma/NIMand the LamanitesנָסוּNA/sufledלְאֶרֶץle/E/retsto the landנֶפִי׃NE/fiof Nephi

    Behold, this is the twenty and ninth year, in the latter end, and we are in the possession of our lands; and the Lamanites have fled to the land of Nephi.

39. 39

    וּבְנֵיu/ve/NEand the sonsעַםamof the peopleעַמּוֹןAm/MONof Ammonאֲשֶׁרa/SHERof whomדִּבַּרְתִּיdib/BAR/tiI spokeעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMof themלְטוֹבָהle/to/VAfor goodאִתִּיit/TIare with meבְּעִירbe/IRin the cityמַנְטִיMAN/tiof Mantiוַיהוָהve-Adonaiand Adonaiתְּמָכָםte/ma/KHAMsupported themוַיִּשְׁמְרֵםvay/yish/me/REMand kept themמִנְּפֹלmin/ne/FOLfrom fallingבַּחֶרֶבba/CHE/revby the swordעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatלֹאlonotנֶהֱרַגne/he/RAGhas been slainאַףafevenנֶפֶשׁNE/feshsoulאֶחָת׃e/CHATone

    And those sons of the people of Ammon, of whom I have so highly spoken, are with me in the city of Manti; and the Lord has supported them, yea, and kept them from falling by the sword, insomuch that even one soul has not been slain.

40. 40

    אַךְakhbutהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdקִבְּלוּkib/be/LUthey receivedפְּצָעִיםpe/tsa/IMwoundsרַבִּיםrab/BIMmanyאַךְakhneverthelessעוֹמְדִיםom/DIMstandהֵםhemtheyאֵיתָנִיםe/ta/NIMfastבַּדְּרוֹרbad/de/RORin the libertyאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwherewithקָרָאka/RAproclaimedלָהֶםla/HEMto themאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodוְשֹׁקְדִיםve/shok/DIMand they are diligentלִזְכֹּרliz/KORto rememberאֶת־יְהוָהet-AdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהֵיהֶםe/lo/he/HEMtheir Godיוֹםyomdayיוֹםyomby dayאַףafyeaשֹׁמְרִיםshom/RIMthey observeלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doאֶת־חֻקָּיוet-chuk/KAYVhis statutesוּמִשְׁפָּטָיוu/mish/pa/TAYVand his judgmentsוּמִצְוֹתָיוu/mits/vo/TAYVand his commandmentsתָּמִידta/MIDcontinuallyוֶאֱמוּנָתָםve/e/mu/na/TAMand their faithחֲזָקָהcha/za/KAis strongבַּנְּבוּאוֹתban/ne/vu/OTin the propheciesעַל־הֶעָתִידal-he/a/TIDconcerning that which is aboutלָבוֹא׃la/VOto come

    But behold, they have received many wounds; nevertheless they stand fast in that liberty wherewith God has made them free; and they are strict to remember the Lord their God from day to day; yea, they do observe to keep his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments continually; and their faith is strong in the prophecies concerning that which is to come.

41. 41

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowמוֹרוֹנִיMo/RO/niMoroniאָחִיa/CHImy brotherהַיָּקָרhay/ya/KARthe dearיִשְׁמׇרְךָyish/mor/KHAmay keep youיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהֵינוּe/lo/HE/nuour Godאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoגְּאָלָנוּge/a/la/NUredeemed usוַיְשַׁלְּחֵנוּvay/shal/le/CHE/nuand sent us awayחׇפְשִׁיchof/SHIfreeתָּמִידta/MIDcontinuallyלְפָנָיוle/fa/NAYVbefore Himוְיָחֹןve/ya/CHONand may he favorאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוְתַצְלִיחוּve/tats/LI/chuand may you prosperלָרֶשֶׁתla/RE/shetto obtainאֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרet-kol-a/SHERall thatלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUtookמֵאִתָּנוּme/it/TA/nufrom usהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהָיָהha/YAwasלְמִחְיָתֵנוּle/mich/ya/te/NUfor our supportוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהִנְנִיhin/NIbehold Iחוֹתֵםcho/TEMcloseאֶת־אִגַּרְתִּיet-ig/gar/TImy epistleאֲנִיa/NII amהֵילָמָןHE/la/manHelamanבֶּן־אַלְמָא׃ben-AL/mathe son of Alma

    And now, my beloved brother, Moroni, may the Lord our God, who has redeemed us and made us free, keep you continually in his presence; yea, and may he favor this people, even that ye may have success in obtaining the possession of all that which the Lamanites have taken from us, which was for our support. And now, behold, I close mine epistle. I am Helaman, the son of Alma.
