   And now it came to pass in the commencement of the thirtieth year of the reign of the judges, on the second day in the first month, Moroni received an epistle from Helaman, stating the affairs of the people in that quarter of the land.

   וְאֵלֶּהand theseהַדְּבָרִיםare the wordsאֲשֶׁרwhichכָּתַבhe wroteלֵאמֹרsayingאָחִיmy brotherהַיָּקָרthe dearמוֹרוֹנִיMoroniהֵןbothבַּיהוָהin the Lordהֵןandבְּצָרוֹתin the tribulations ofמִלְחַמְתֵּנוּour warfareהִנֵּהbeholdאָחִיmy brotherהַיָּקָרthe dearיֶשׁ־לִיI haveדָּבָרsomewhatלְהַגִּידto tellלְךָyouעַל־אֹדוֹתconcerningמִלְחַמְתֵּנוּour warfareבַּחֵלֶקin the partהַזֶּהthisמִן־הָאָרֶץ׃of the land

   And these are the words which he wrote, saying: My dearly beloved brother, Moroni, as well in the Lord as in the tribulations of our warfare; behold, my beloved brother, I have somewhat to tell you concerning our warfare in this part of the land.

   הִנֵּהbeholdאַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandמִבְּנֵיof the sons ofהָאֲנָשִׁיםthe menהָהֵםthoseאֲשֶׁרwhomהוֹרִידbrought downעַמּוֹןAmmonמֵאֶרֶץout of the land ofנֶפִיNephiוְהִנֵּהand beholdיָדַעְתָּyou have knownכִּי־אֵלֶּהthat theseמִצֶּאֱצָאֵיwere of the descendants ofלָמָןLamanהַבְּכוֹרthe firstbornלְאָבִינוּof our fatherלֶחִי׃Lehi

   Behold, two thousand of the sons of those men whom Ammon brought down out of the land of Nephi—now ye have known that these were descendants of Laman, who was the eldest son of our father Lehi;

   וְעַתָּהand nowאֵין־לִיI have noצֹרֶךְneedלְסַפֵּרto rehearseלְךָunto youעַל־אֹדוֹתconcerningמָסֹרְתָםtheir traditionוּמַעֲלָםor their unbeliefכִּיforיָדַעְתָּyou knowאֶת־כׇּל־הַדְּבָרִיםall the thingsהָאֵלֶּה׃these

   Now I need not rehearse unto you concerning their traditions or their unbelief, for thou knowest concerning all these things—

   לָכֵןthereforeדַּיit sufficethלִיunto meלְהַגִּידthat I tellלְךָyouכִּיthatאַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandמִן־הַנְּעָרִיםof the young menהָאֵלֶּהtheseלָקְחוּhave takenאֶת־כְּלֵיthe weapons ofמִלְחַמְתָּםtheir warוַיַּחְפְּצוּand they desiredלָשׂוּםto setאֹתִיmeלְרֹאשׁfor a leaderלָהֶםunto themוַנֵּצֵאand we have come forthלְהָגֵןto defendעַל־אַרְצֵנוּ׃our country

   Therefore it sufficeth me that I tell you that two thousand of these young men have taken their weapons of war, and would that I should be their leader; and we have come forth to defend our country.

   וְעַתָּהand nowיָדַעְתָּyou knowגַּם־אַתָּהyou alsoאֶת־הַבְּרִיתthe covenantאֲשֶׁרwhichכָּרְתוּmadeאֲבוֹתֵיהֶםtheir fathersלְבִלְתִּיthat they would notשְׂאֵתtake upכְּלֵיweapons ofמִלְחָמָהwarנֶגֶדagainstאֲחֵיהֶםtheir brethrenלִשְׁפֹּךְto shedדָּם׃blood

   And now ye also know concerning the covenant which their fathers made, that they would not take up their weapons of war against their brethren to shed blood.

   וַיְהִיand it wasבִּשְׁנַתin the year ofעֶשְׂרִיםtwentyוָשֵׁשׁand sixכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenרָאוּthey sawאֶת־עׇנְיֵנוּour afflictionוְצָרוֹתֵינוּand our tribulationsבַּעֲבוּרָםfor themוַיֹּאמְרוּand they proposedלְהָפֵרto breakאֶת־הַבְּרִיתthe covenantאֲשֶׁרwhichכָּרְתוּthey had madeוְלָשֵׂאתand to take upכְּלֵיweapons ofמִלְחָמָהwarלְהָגֵןto defendעָלֵינוּ׃us

   But in the twenty and sixth year, when they saw our afflictions and our tribulations for them, they were about to break the covenant which they had made and take up their weapons of war in our defence.

8. 8

   וְלֹאbut notנָתַתִּיI would sufferלָהֶםthemלְהָפֵרto breakאֶת־הַבְּרִיתthe covenantהַזֹּאתthisאֲשֶׁרwhichכָּרְתוּthey had madeכִּיforאָמַרְתִּיI saidאוּלַיthat perhapsיְחַזְּקֵנוּwould strengthen usאֱלֹהִיםGodוְלֹאand notנִסְבֹּלwe should sufferעוֹדmoreבַּעֲבוּרbecause ofקַיֵּםthe fulfilling ofאֶת־הַשְּׁבוּעָהthe oathאֲשֶׁרwhichנִשְׁבָּעוּ׃they had sworn

   But I would not suffer them that they should break this covenant which they had made, supposing that God would strengthen us, insomuch that we should not suffer more because of the fulfilling the oath which they had taken.

   אַךְbutהִנֵּהbeholdדָּבָרa thingאֶחָדoneאֲשֶׁר־בּוֹwhereinנִשְׂמַחwe may rejoiceשִׂמְחָהjoyגְדוֹלָהgreatכִּיforהִנֵּהbeholdבִּשְׁנַתin the year ofעֶשְׂרִיםtwentyוָשֵׁשׁand sixאֲנִיIהֵילָמָןHelamanהָלַכְתִּיdid marchבְּרֹאשׁat the head ofאַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandהַנְּעָרִיםthe young menהָאֵלֶּהtheseאֶל־עִירto the city ofיְהוּדָהJudeaלַעֲזֹרto assistלְאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusאֲשֶׁרwhomהִפְקַדְתֶּםyou had appointedלְרֹאשׁa leaderעַל־הָעָםover the people ofבַּחֵלֶקin the partהַהוּאthatמִן־הָאָרֶץ׃of the land

   But behold, here is one thing in which we may have great joy. For behold, in the twenty and sixth year, I, Helaman, did march at the head of these two thousand young men to the city of Judea, to assist Antipus, whom ye had appointed a leader over the people of that part of the land.

    וָאֶסְפַּחand I did joinאֶת־אַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandבָּנַיmy sons(כִּי(forנְכֹנִיםworthyהֵםthey areלְהִקָּרֵאto be calledבָּנִים)sons)אֶל־צְבָאto the army ofאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusוַיִּשְׂמַחand rejoicedאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusעַל־הַכֹּחַat the forceהַזֶּהthisשִׂמְחָהwith joyגְדוֹלָהgreatכִּיforהִנֵּהbeholdמָעַטhad been reducedצְבָאוֹhis armyבְּיַדby the hand ofהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesכִּיforהָרְגוּhad slainחֵילוֹתֵיהֶםtheir forcesמִסְפַּרa number ofרַבgreatמֵאַנְשֵׁינוּof our menאֲשֶׁרwhichעַל־כֵּןthereforeעָלֵינוּit is upon usלִבְכּוֹת׃to weep

    And I did join my two thousand sons, (for they are worthy to be called sons) to the army of Antipus, in which strength Antipus did rejoice exceedingly; for behold, his army had been reduced by the Lamanites because their forces had slain a vast number of our men, for which cause we have to mourn.

11. 11

    אַךְneverthelessנִתְנַחֵםwe may console ourselvesבַּדָּבָרin the pointהַזֶּהthisכִּיthatמֵתוּthey have diedבְּעַדforאַרְצָםtheir countryוֵאלֹהֵיהֶםand their Godוְאַשְׁרֵיהֶם׃and they are happy

    Nevertheless, we may console ourselves in this point, that they have died in the cause of their country and of their God, yea, and they are happy.

12. 12

    וְגַםand alsoהֶחֱזִיקוּretainedהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesשְׁבוּיִיםprisonersרַבִּיםmanyכֻּלָּםall of themשָׂרֵיthe captains ofצָבָאthe armyכִּי־לֹאfor notהֶחֱיוּhave they spared aliveזוּלָתָםany otherוַנַּחְשֹׁבand we supposeכִּיthatהֵםtheyכָּעֵתare nowבְּאֶרֶץin the land ofנֶפִיNephiאִם־לֹאif notהוּמָתוּ׃they have been put to death

    And the Lamanites had also retained many prisoners, all of whom are chief captains, for none other have they spared alive. And we suppose that they are now at this time in the land of Nephi; it is so if they are not slain.

13. 13

    וְאֵלֶּהand theseהֶעָרִיםare the citiesאֲשֶׁרof whichיָרְשׁוּhave obtained possessionהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesבִּשְׁפֹּךְby the shedding ofדַּםthe blood ofרַבִּיםmanyמֵאַנְשֵׁינוּof our menהַגִּבּוֹרִים׃the valiant ones

    And now these are the cities of which the Lamanites have obtained possession by the shedding of the blood of so many of our valiant men:

14. 14

    אֶרֶץthe land ofמַנְטִיMantiאוֹorעִירthe city ofמַנְטִיMantiוְעִירand the city ofזִיזְרוֹםZeezromוְעִירand the city ofכּוּמֵנִיCumeniוְעִירand the city ofאַנְטִיפָּרָה׃Antiparah

    The land of Manti, or the city of Manti, and the city of Zeezrom, and the city of Cumeni, and the city of Antiparah.

15. 15

    וְאֵלֶּהand theseהֶעָרִיםare the citiesאֲשֶׁרwhichיָרְשׁוּthey possessedבְּבֹאִיwhen I arrivedאֶל־עִירat the city ofיְהוּדָהJudeaוָאֶמְצָאand I foundאֶת־אַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusוַאֲנָשָׁיוand his menעֲמֵלִיםtoilingבְּכׇל־כֹּחָםwith all their mightלְבַצֵּרto fortifyאֶת־הָעִיר׃the city

    And these are the cities which they possessed when I arrived at the city of Judea; and I found Antipus and his men toiling with their might to fortify the city.

16. 16

    וְגַם־נָפְלָהand also had fallenרוּחָםtheir spiritוַיִּרְפּוּand had become weakגְּוִיָּתָםtheir bodyכִּיforנִלְחֲמוּthey had foughtבְּאֹמֶץvaliantlyבַּיּוֹםby dayוְעָמְלוּand toiledבַּלַּיְלָהby nightלִשְׁמֹרto maintainאֶת־עָרֵיהֶםtheir citiesוַיִּסְבְּלוּand they had sufferedצָרוֹתafflictionsגְּדוֹלוֹתgreatמִכׇּל־מִין׃of every kind

    Yea, and they were depressed in body as well as in spirit, for they had fought valiantly by day and toiled by night to maintain their cities; and thus they had suffered great afflictions of every kind.

17. 17

    וַיִּתְאַמְּצוּand they were determinedלִגְבֹּרto conquerבַּמָּקוֹםin the placeהַזֶּהthisאוֹorלָמוּתto dieלָכֵןthereforeתּוּכַלyou mayלְהָבִיןunderstandכִּיthatהַכֹּחַthe forceהַקָּטָןthe littleהַזֶּהthisאֲשֶׁרwhichהֵבֵאתִיI had broughtעִמִּיwith meאַףyeaבָּנַיmy sonsאֵלֶּהtheseנָתְנוּgaveלָהֶםthemתִּקְוָהhopeגְדוֹלָהgreatוְשִׂמְחָהand joyרַבָּה׃much

    And now they were determined to conquer in this place or die; therefore you may well suppose that this little force which I brought with me, yea, those sons of mine, gave them great hopes and much joy.

18. 18

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenרָאוּsawהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesכִּי־קִבֵּלthat had receivedאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusעוֹדmoreכֹּחַstrengthלִצְבָאוֹto his armyוַיֵּאָנְסוּthey were compelledעַל־פִּיbyמִצְוַתthe command ofעַמּוֹרוֹןAmmoronלְבִלְתִּיnotבֹאto comeלְהִלָּחֵםto fightבְּעִירagainst the city ofיְהוּדָהJudeaאוֹorנֶגְדֵּנוּ׃against us

    And now it came to pass that when the Lamanites saw that Antipus had received a greater strength to his army, they were compelled by the orders of Ammoron to not come against the city of Judea, or against us, to battle.

19. 19

    וְכֵןand thusהֵיטִיבdealt wellיְהוָהthe Lordעִמָּנוּwith usכִּיforלוּhadבָּאוּthey comeעָלֵינוּupon usבְּחֻלְשָׁתֵנוּin our weaknessאוּלַיperhapsהָיוּthey might haveמַשְׁמִידִיםdestroyedאֶת־צְבָאֵנוּour armyהַקָּטָןlittleוְכָכָהbut thusנִשְׁמַרְנוּ׃were we preserved

    And thus were we favored of the Lord; for had they come upon us in this our weakness they might have perhaps destroyed our little army; but thus were we preserved.

20. 20

    וַיְצַוand commandedאוֹתָםthemעַמּוֹרוֹןAmmoronלְהַחֲזִיקto maintainבֶּעָרִיםthe citiesאֲשֶׁרwhichלָכָדוּthey had takenוַתִּתֹּםand thus endedשְׁנַתthe year ofעֶשְׂרִיםtwentyוָשֵׁשׁand sixוַיְהִיand it wasבִּתְחִלַּתin the commencement ofשְׁנַתthe year ofעֶשְׂרִיםtwentyוָשֶׁבַעand sevenוַנָּכִיןwe had preparedאֶת־עִירֵנוּour cityוְאֶת־עַצְמֵנוּand ourselvesלְמָגֵן׃for defense

    They were commanded by Ammoron to maintain those cities which they had taken. And thus ended the twenty and sixth year. And in the commencement of the twenty and seventh year we had prepared our city and ourselves for defence.

21. 21

    וַנַּחְפֹּץand we were desirousכִּי־יָבֹאוּthat should comeעָלֵינוּupon usהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesכִּי־לֹאfor notחָפַצְנוּwe were desirousלִפְשֹׁטto attackעֲלֵיהֶםthemבְּמִבְצְרֵיהֶם׃in their strongholds

    Now we were desirous that the Lamanites should come upon us; for we were not desirous to make an attack upon them in their strongholds.

22. 22

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכִּיthatהֶעֱמַדְנוּwe setמְרַגְּלִיםspiesסָבִיבround aboutלִשְׁמֹרto watchאֶת־מוֹצְאֵיthe movements ofהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesפֶּן־יַעַבְרוּlest they should passעָלֵינוּby usבַּלַּיְלָהby nightאוֹorבַיּוֹםby dayלִפְשֹׁטto attackעַל־עָרֵינוּupon our citiesהָאֲחֵרוֹתthe otherאֲשֶׁרwhichבַּצָּפוֹן׃on the north

    And it came to pass that we kept spies out round about, to watch the movements of the Lamanites, that they might not pass us by night nor by day to make an attack upon our other cities which were on the northward.

23. 23

    כִּיforיָדַעְנוּwe knewכִּיthatבֶּעָרִיםin the citiesהָהֵןthoseלֹא־הָיָהthere was notכֹּחַstrengthרַבenoughלַעֲמֹדto standנֶגְדָּםagainst themלָכֵןthereforeחָפַצְנוּwe desiredאִם־יַעַבְרוּif they should passעָלֵינוּby usלִפֹּלto fallעֲלֵיהֶםupon themמֵאָחוֹרfrom the rearוּלְהָבִיאand bringאוֹתָםthemבֵּיןbetweenהַמְּצָרִיםthe straitsבְּעֵתwhenיִפָּגְשׁוּthey were metמִפָּנִיםin the frontוַנַּחְשֹׁבand we supposedכִּיthatנוּכַלwe couldלִגְבֹּרoverpowerעֲלֵיהֶםthemאַךְbutהִנֵּהbeholdנִכְזְבָהwas disappointedתּוֹחַלְתֵּנוּ׃our hope

    For we knew in those cities they were not sufficiently strong to meet them; therefore we were desirous, if they should pass by us, to fall upon them in their rear, and thus bring them up in the rear at the same time they were met in the front. We supposed that we could overpower them; but behold, we were disappointed in this our desire.

24. 24

    לֹאnotהֵעֵזּוּthey durstלַעֲבֹרto passעָלֵינוּby usעִם־כׇּל־צְבָאָםwith their whole armyוְגַםand alsoלֹאnotעִם־חֵלֶקwith a partמִמֶּנּוּof itפֶּן־לֹאlest notיִהְיֶהthere should beלָהֶםunto themכֹּחַstrengthרַבenoughוְיִפֹּלוּ׃and they should fall

    They durst not pass by us with their whole army, neither durst they with a part, lest they should not be sufficiently strong and they should fall.

25. 25

    וְגַםand alsoלֹאnotהֵעֵזּוּdurst theyלָרֶדֶתto go downנֶגֶדagainstעִירthe city ofזָרַהֶמְלָהZarahemlaוְלֹא־הֵעֵזּוּneither durst theyלַעֲבֹרto crossאֶת־רֹאשׁthe head ofסִידוֹןSidonאֶל־עִירto the city ofנֶפִיהָה׃Nephihah

    Neither durst they march down against the city of Zarahemla; neither durst they cross the head of Sidon, over to the city of Nephihah.

26. 26

    וְכֵןand thusהִתְאַמְּצוּthey were determinedבְּחֵילוֹתֵיהֶםwith their forcesלְהַחֲזִיקto maintainבֶּעָרִיםthe citiesאֲשֶׁרwhichלָכָדוּ׃they had taken

    And thus, with their forces, they were determined to maintain those cities which they had taken.

27. 27

    וַיְהִיand it happenedבַּחֹדֶשׁin the monthהַשֵּׁנִיthe secondבַּשָּׁנָהin the yearהַזֹּאתthisוַיּוּבְאוּthere were broughtאֵלֵינוּunto usצֵידָהprovisionsרַבָּהmanyמֵאֲבוֹתfrom the fathers ofאַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandבָּנַי׃my sons

    And now it came to pass in the second month of this year, there was brought unto us many provisions from the fathers of those my two thousand sons.

28. 28

    וְגַםand alsoנִשְׁלְחוּwere sentאֵלֵינוּunto usאַלְפַּיִםtwo thousandאִישׁmenמֵאֶרֶץfrom the land ofזָרַהֶמְלָהZarahemlaוְכֵןand thusהָיִינוּwe wereמוּכָנִיםpreparedעִם־עֲשֶׂרֶתwith tenאֲלָפִיםthousandאִישׁmenוְצֵידָהand provisionsלָהֶםfor themוְגַםand alsoלִנְשֵׁיהֶםfor their wivesוּלְטַפָּם׃and their children

    And also there were sent two thousand men unto us from the land of Zarahemla. And thus we were prepared with ten thousand men, and provisions for them, and also for their wives and their children.

29. 29

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכִּרְאוֹתwhen sawהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesכִּיthatחֵילֵנוּour forceהוֹלֵךְwas goingוְגָדֵלand growingיוֹםdayיוֹםby dayוְצֵידָהand provisionsבָּאָהwere arrivingלְמִחְיָתֵנוּfor our supportוַיָּחֵלּוּthey beganלִירֹאto be afraidוַיָּחֵלּוּand beganלָצֵאתto go forthאוּלַיthat perhapsיוּכְלוּthey might be ableלְהַשְׁבִּיתto put an endאֶת־קַבָּלַתto our receivingהַצֵּידָהprovisionsוְהַכֹּחַ׃and strength

    And the Lamanites, thus seeing our forces increase daily, and provisions arrive for our support, they began to be fearful, and began to sally forth, if it were possible to put an end to our receiving provisions and strength.

30. 30

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenרָאִינוּwe sawכִּיthatהֵחֵלּוּbeganהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesלִדְאֹגto be uneasyכָּכָהafter this mannerוַנַּחְפֹּץwe were desirousלְהָבִיאto bringעֲלֵיהֶםupon themתַּחְבּוּלָהa stratagemלָכֵןthereforeצִוָּהcommandedאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusכִּיthatאֵצֵאI should go forthעִם־בָּנַיwith my sonsהַקְּטַנִּיםthe littleאֶל־עִירto a cityשְׁכֵנָהneighboringכְּמוֹלִיכִיםas if carryingצֵידָהprovisionsלְעִירto a cityשְׁכֵנָה׃neighboring

    Now when we saw that the Lamanites began to grow uneasy on this wise, we were desirous to bring a stratagem into effect upon them; therefore Antipus ordered that I should march forth with my little sons to a neighboring city, as if we were carrying provisions to a neighboring city.

31. 31

    וַנֵּלֵךְand we were to goקָרוֹבnearלְעִירto the city ofאַנְטִיפָּרָהAntiparahכִּיthatנֵלֵךְwe were goingאֶל־הָעִירto the cityמֵעֵבֶרbeyondלָהּitבִּגְבוּלin the borders ofחוֹףthe shore ofהַיָּם׃the sea

    And we were to march near the city of Antiparah, as if we were going to the city beyond, in the borders by the seashore.

32. 32

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכִּיthatיָצָאנוּwe went forthלַדֶּרֶךְon the wayעִם־צֵידָתֵנוּwith our provisionsלָלֶכֶתto goאֶל־הָעִירto the cityהַהִיא׃that

    And it came to pass that we did march forth, as if with our provisions, to go to that city.

33. 33

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכִּיthatיָצָאmarched forthאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusעִם־חֵלֶקwith a part ofמִצְּבָאוֹhis armyוַיַּשְׁאֵרand leftאֶת־הַנּוֹתָרthe remainderלִשְׁמֹרto maintainאֶת־הָעִירthe cityאַךְbutלֹאnotיָצָאdid marchעַד־אֲשֶׁרuntilיָצָאתִיI had gone forthעִם־צְבָאִיwith my armyהַקָּטָןlittleוָאֶקְרַבand came nearאֶל־עִירto the city ofאַנְטִיפָּרָה׃Antiparah

    And it came to pass that Antipus did march forth with a part of his army, leaving the remainder to maintain the city. But he did not march forth until I had gone forth with my little army, and came near the city Antiparah.

34. 34

    וְעַתָּהand nowבְּעִירin the city ofאַנְטִיפָּרָהAntiparahחָנָהwas stationedצְבָאthe army ofהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesהֶחָזָקthe strongestאַףyeaהָרַבthe most numerousבְּמִסְפָּר׃in number

    And now, in the city Antiparah were stationed the strongest army of the Lamanites; yea, the most numerous.

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenהוּגַדit had been toldלָהֶםunto themעַל־יְדֵיbyמְרַגְּלֵיהֶםtheir spiesוַיֵּצְאוּthey came forthעִם־צְבָאָםwith their armyוַיִּצְעֲדוּand marchedלִקְרָאתֵנוּ׃against us

    And it came to pass that when they had been informed by their spies, they came forth with their army and marched against us.

36. 36

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכִּיthatנַסְנוּwe did fleeמִפְּנֵיהֶםbefore themצָפוֹנָהnorthwardוְכֵןand thusהוֹבַלְנוּdid we lead awayאֶת־צְבָאthe army ofהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesהֶחָזָקthe most powerfulמִכֹּל׃of all

    And it came to pass that we did flee before them, northward. And thus we did lead away the most powerful army of the Lamanites;

37. 37

    הֵןyeaלְמֶרְחָקto a distanceרַבconsiderableעַד־כִּיinsomuch thatכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenרָאוּthey sawאֶת־צְבָאthe army ofאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusרוֹדֵףpursuingאַחֲרֵיהֶםthemבְּכׇל־כֹּחָםwith all their mightלֹא־פָנוּthey turned notיָמִיןto the rightאוֹorשְׂמֹאלto the leftכִּי־אִםbutנָסְעוּthey went onבְּמַסָּעָםtheir marchיָשָׁרstraightאַחֲרֵינוּafter usוּכְאֲשֶׁרand asחָשַׁבְנוּwe supposeחָפְצוּthey desiredלַהֲרְגֵנוּto slay usבְּטֶרֶםbeforeיַשִּׂיגֵםshould overtake themאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusלְמַעַןthatלֹאnotיֻקָּפוּthey should be surroundedבְּיַדby the hand ofעַמֵּנוּ׃our people

    Yea, even to a considerable distance, insomuch that when they saw the army of Antipus pursuing them, with their might, they did not turn to the right nor to the left, but pursued their march in a straight course after us; and, as we suppose, it was their intent to slay us before Antipus should overtake them, and this that they might not be surrounded by our people.

38. 38

    וְעַתָּהand nowאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusבִּרְאוֹתוֹbeholdingאֶת־צָרָתֵנוּour distressהֵחִישׁdid speedאֶת־מַסַּעthe march ofצְבָאוֹhis armyאַךְbutהִנֵּהbeholdבָּאcameלַיְלָהnightלָכֵןthereforeלֹאnotהִשִּׂיגוּנוּthey did overtake usוְגַםand alsoלֹאnotהִשִּׂיגdid overtakeאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusאוֹתָםthemוַנַּחֲנֶהand we did campלַלָּיְלָה׃for the night

    And now Antipus, beholding our danger, did speed the march of his army. But behold, it was night; therefore they did not overtake us, neither did Antipus overtake them; therefore we did camp for the night.

39. 39

    וַיְהִיand it happenedבְּטֶרֶםbeforeעֲלוֹתthe rising ofהַשַּׁחַרthe dawnוְהִנֵּהbeholdהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesרוֹדְפִיםwere pursuingאַחֲרֵינוּafter usוְעַתָּהand nowלֹא־הָיָהthere was notבָנוּin usכֹּחַstrengthרַבsufficientלְהִלָּחֵםto contendבָּםwith themאַףyeaלֹאnotאָבִיתִיI wouldכִּיthatיִפְּלוּshould fallבָנַיmy sonsהַקְּטַנִּיםthe littleבִּידֵיהֶםinto their handsלָכֵןthereforeנָסַעְנוּwe went onבְּמַסָּעֵנוּin our marchוַנִּשָּׂאand we tookמַסָּעֵנוּour marchאֶל־הַמִּדְבָּר׃into the wilderness

    And it came to pass that before the dawn of the morning, behold, the Lamanites were pursuing us. Now we were not sufficiently strong to contend with them; yea, I would not suffer that my little sons should fall into their hands; therefore we did continue our march, and we took our march into the wilderness.

40. 40

    וְלֹא־הֵעֵזּוּand they durst notלִפְנוֹתto turnיָמִיןto the rightאוֹorשְׂמֹאלto the leftפֶּן־יֻקָּפוּlest they should be surroundedוְגַם־אֲנִיand also Iלֹאnotפָנִיתִיdid turnיָמִיןto the rightאוֹorשְׂמֹאלto the leftפֶּן־יַשִּׂיגוּנִיlest they should overtake meוְלֹאand notנוּכַלwe should be ableלַעֲמֹדto standנֶגְדָּםagainst themוְנִפֹּלand should fallוְהֵםand theyיִמָּלְטוּwould escapeוְכֵןand thusנַסְנוּwe did fleeכׇּל־הַיּוֹםall the dayהַהוּאthatבַּמִּדְבָּרin the wildernessעַד־כִּיuntilחָשָׁךְ׃it was dark

    Now they durst not turn to the right nor to the left lest they should be surrounded; neither would I turn to the right nor to the left lest they should overtake me, and we could not stand against them, but be slain, and they would make their escape; and thus we did flee all that day into the wilderness, even until it was dark.

41. 41

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenעָלָהaroseאוֹרthe light ofהַבֹּקֶרthe morningוַנִּרְאֶהand we sawאֶת־הַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesעָלֵינוּupon usוַנָּנָסand we did fleeמִפְּנֵיהֶם׃before them

    And it came to pass that again, when the light of the morning came we saw the Lamanites upon us, and we did flee before them.

42. 42

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכִּי־לֹאthat notרָדְפוּthey did pursueאַחֲרֵינוּafter usהַרְחֵקfarוַיַּעַמְדוּand they haltedוַיְהִיand it wasבַּבֹּקֶרin the morningבַּיּוֹםon the dayהַשְּׁלִישִׁיthe thirdלַחֹדֶשׁof the monthהַשְּׁבִיעִי׃the seventh

    But it came to pass that they did not pursue us far before they halted; and it was in the morning of the third day of the seventh month.

43. 43

    וְעַתָּהand nowלֹא־יָדַעְנוּwe knew notאִם־הִשִּׂיגָםwhether had overtaken themאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusוָאֹמַרand I saidאֶל־אֲנָשַׁיunto my menהִנֵּהbeholdלֹאnotנֵדַעwe knowאוּלַיperhapsעָמְדוּthey have haltedלְמַעַןfor the purpose thatנָבוֹאwe should comeנֶגְדָּםagainst themוְיוּכְלוּthat they might be ableלְלָכְדֵנוּto catch usבְּמוֹקְשָׁם׃in their snare

    And now, whether they were overtaken by Antipus we knew not, but I said unto my men: Behold, we know not but they have halted for the purpose that we should come against them, that they might catch us in their snare;

44. 44

    וְעַתָּהand nowמָה־תֹּאמְרוּwhat say youבָּנַיmy sonsהֲתֵלְכוּwill you goנֶגְדָּםagainst themלַמִּלְחָמָה׃to battle

    Therefore what say ye, my sons, will ye go against them to battle?

45. 45

    וְעַתָּהand nowאֹמַרI sayלְךָunto youאָחִיmy brotherהַיָּקָרthe dearמוֹרוֹנִיMoroniכִּיthatמֵעוֹלָםeverלֹאnotרָאִיתִיhad I seenאֹמֶץcourageגָּדוֹלgreatכָּזֶהsuchאַףnayלֹאnotבְּקֶרֶבamongכׇּל־הַנֶּפִיִּים׃all the Nephites

    And now I say unto you, my beloved brother Moroni, that never had I seen so great courage, nay, not amongst all the Nephites.

46. 46

    כִּיforכַּאֲשֶׁרasקָרָאתִיI had calledלָהֶםthemתָּמִידeverבָּנַיmy sons(כִּי(forכֻלָּםall of themצְעִירִיםwere youngמְאֹד)very)כֵּןsoאָמְרוּthey saidאֵלַיunto meאָבִינוּour fatherהִנֵּהbeholdאֱלֹהֵינוּour Godעִמָּנוּis with usוְהוּאand heלֹא־יִתֵּןwill not sufferלָנוּunto usלִפֹּלto fallלָכֵןthereforeנֵצֵאlet us go forthלֹאnotנַהֲרֹגwe would slayאֶת־אַחֵינוּour brethrenאִם־יַנִּיחוּif they would let aloneלָנוּusלָכֵןthereforeנֵלְכָהlet us goפֶּן־יִגְבְּרוּlest they should prevailעַל־צְבָאover the army ofאַנְטִיפּוּס׃Antipus

    For as I had ever called them my sons (for they were all of them very young) even so they said unto me: Father, behold our God is with us, and he will not suffer that we should fall; then let us go forth; we would not slay our brethren if they would let us alone; therefore let us go, lest they should overpower the army of Antipus.

47. 47

    וְהֵםand theyמֵעוֹלָםeverלֹאnotנִלְחֲמוּhad foughtאַךְyetלֹאnotיָרְאוּdid they fearמִמָּוֶתdeathוַיַּחְשְׁבוּand they did thinkיוֹתֵרmoreעַל־דְּרוֹרupon the liberty ofאֲבוֹתֵיהֶםtheir fathersמֵאֲשֶׁרthanעַל־חַיֵּיהֶםupon their livesאַףyeaלִמְּדוּhad taughtאוֹתָםthemאִמּוֹתֵיהֶםtheir mothersכִּי־אִםthat ifלֹא־יִהְיֶהshould not beלִבָּםtheir heartתָּלוּיhangingיַצִּילֵםwould deliver themאֱלֹהִים׃God

    Now they never had fought, yet they did not fear death; and they did think more upon the liberty of their fathers than they did upon their lives; yea, they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them.

48. 48

    וַיִּשְׁנוּand they rehearsedלִיunto meאֶת־דִּבְרֵיthe words ofאִמּוֹתֵיהֶםtheir mothersלֵאמֹרsayingאֵיןis notלִבֵּנוּour heartתָּלוּיhangingכִּיthatיָדְעוּknewאִמּוֹתֵינוּ׃our mothers

    And they rehearsed unto me the words of their mothers, saying: We do not doubt our mothers knew it.

49. 49

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכִּיthatשַׁבְתִּיI returnedעִם־אַלְפַּיwith my two thousandנֶגֶדagainstהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesהָאֵלֶּהtheseאֲשֶׁרwhoרָדְפוּhad pursuedאַחֲרֵינוּafter usוְהִנֵּהand beholdהִשִּׂיגוּםhad overtaken themצִבְאוֹתthe armies ofאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusוַתָּחֵלand had begunמִלְחָמָהa battleנוֹרָאָה׃terrible

    And it came to pass that I did return with my two thousand against these Lamanites who had pursued us. And now behold, the armies of Antipus had overtaken them, and a terrible battle had commenced.

50. 50

    וַיְהִיand wasצְבָאthe army ofאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusעָיֵףwearyמִפְּנֵיbecause ofמַסָּעָםtheir marchהָאָרֹךְlongבְּעֵתin a timeקְצָרָהshortוַיָּחֵלּוּand they beganלִפֹּלto fallבִּידֵיinto the hands ofהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesוְלוּלֵאand if notשַׁבְתִּיI had returnedעִם־אַלְפַּיwith my two thousandהָיוּthey would haveמַשִּׂיגִיםobtainedאֶת־מְזִמָּתָם׃their purpose

    The army of Antipus being weary, because of their long march in so short a space of time, were about to fall into the hands of the Lamanites; and had I not returned with my two thousand they would have obtained their purpose.

51. 51

    כִּי־נָפַלfor had fallenאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusלְפִי־חֶרֶבby the swordוְרַבִּיםand manyמִשָּׂרָיוof his leadersמֵרֹבbecause of the abundance ofעֲיֵפוּתָםtheir wearinessאֲשֶׁרwhichבָּאָהcameמִמְּהֵרַתfrom the speed ofמַסָּעָםtheir marchלָכֵןthereforeאַנְשֵׁיthe men ofאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusבִּהְיוֹתָםbeingנְבוּכִיםconfusedמִפְּנֵיbecause ofנְפִילַתthe fall ofשָׂרֵיהֶםtheir leadersהֵחֵלּוּbeganלָסוֹגto give wayאָחוֹרbackמִפְּנֵיbeforeהַלָּמָנִים׃the Lamanites

    For Antipus had fallen by the sword, and many of his leaders, because of their weariness, which was occasioned by the speed of their march—therefore the men of Antipus, being confused because of the fall of their leaders, began to give way before the Lamanites.

52. 52

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכִּיthatהִתְחַזְּקוּtook courageהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesוַיָּחֵלּוּand beganלִרְדֹּףto pursueאַחֲרֵיהֶםthemוְכֵןand thusהָיוּwereהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesרוֹדְפִיםpursuingאַחֲרֵיהֶםthemבְּכֹחַwith vigorגָּדוֹלgreatכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenבָּאcameהֵילָמָןHelamanעֲלֵיהֶםupon themמֵאָחוֹרfrom the rearעִם־אַלְפָּיוwith his two thousandוַיָּחֶלand beganלְהַכּוֹתָםto smite themמַכָּהwith a slaughterרַבָּהgreatמְאֹדexceedinglyעַד־כִּיinsomuch thatעָמַדhaltedכׇּל־צְבָאthe whole army ofהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesוַיִּפְנוּand turnedאֶל־הֵילָמָן׃upon Helaman

    And it came to pass that the Lamanites took courage, and began to pursue them; and thus were the Lamanites pursuing them with great vigor when Helaman came upon their rear with his two thousand, and began to slay them exceedingly, insomuch that the whole army of the Lamanites halted and turned upon Helaman.

53. 53

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכִּרְאוֹתwhen sawעַםthe people ofאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusכִּיthatסָבְבוּhad turned aroundהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesוַיִּתְקַבְּצוּthey gathered togetherאַנְשֵׁיהֶםtheir menוַיָּשׁוּבוּand came againעַל־אֲחוֹרֵיupon the rear ofהַלָּמָנִים׃the Lamanites

    Now when the people of Antipus saw that the Lamanites had turned them about, they gathered together their men and came again upon the rear of the Lamanites.

54. 54

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכִּיthatאֲנַחְנוּweעַם־נֶפִיthe people of Nephiוְעַםand the people ofאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusוַאֲנִיand Iעִם־אַלְפַּיwith my two thousandהִקַּפְנוּdid surroundאֶת־הַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesוַנַּכֵּםand we smote themאַףyeaעַד־כִּיinsomuch thatנֶאֶנְסוּthey were compelledלָתֵתto deliver upאֶת־כְּלֵיthe weapons ofמִלְחַמְתָּםtheir warוְגַםand alsoאֶת־נַפְשָׁםthemselvesכִּשְׁבוּיֵיas prisoners ofמִלְחָמָה׃war

    And now it came to pass that we, the people of Nephi, the people of Antipus, and I with my two thousand, did surround the Lamanites, and did slay them; yea, insomuch that they were compelled to deliver up their weapons of war and also themselves as prisoners of war.

55. 55

    וַיְהִיand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenנָתְנוּthey had given upאֶת־נַפְשָׁםthemselvesבְּיָדֵינוּinto our handsוְהִנֵּהand beholdסָפַרְתִּיI numberedאֶת־הַנְּעָרִיםthe young menאֲשֶׁרwhoנִלְחֲמוּhad foughtעִמִּיwith meכִּיforיָרֵאתִיI fearedפֶּן־נָפְלוּlest had fallenרַבִּיםmanyמֵהֶם׃of them

    And now it came to pass that when they had surrendered themselves up unto us, behold, I numbered those young men who had fought with me, fearing lest there were many of them slain.

56. 56

    אַךְbutהִנֵּהbeholdלְשִׂמְחָתִיto my joyהַגְּדוֹלָהthe greatלֹאnotנָפַלhad fallenאֶחָדoneמֵהֶםof themאָרְצָהto the earthאַףyeaנִלְחֲמוּthey had foughtבְּכֹחַwith the strength ofאֱלֹהִיםGodאַףyeaמֵעוֹלָםeverלֹאnotנוֹדְעוּwere knownאֲנָשִׁיםmenאֲשֶׁרthatנִלְחֲמוּhad foughtבְּכֹחַwith strengthנִפְלָאwonderfulכָּזֶהsuchוּבְכֹחַand with powerעָצוּםmightyכָּזֶהsuchנָפְלוּdid they fallעַל־הַלָּמָנִיםupon the Lamanitesעַד־כִּיinsomuch thatהִפְחִידוּםthey did frighten themוּבַעֲבוּרand because ofזֹאתthisנָתְנוּdid deliver upהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesאֶת־נַפְשָׁםthemselvesכִּשְׁבוּיֵיas prisoners ofמִלְחָמָה׃war

    But behold, to my great joy, there had not one soul of them fallen to the earth; yea, and they had fought as if with the strength of God; yea, never were men known to have fought with such miraculous strength; and with such mighty power did they fall upon the Lamanites, that they did frighten them; and for this cause did the Lamanites deliver themselves up as prisoners of war.

57. 57

    וְכַאֲשֶׁרand asלֹא־הָיָהthere was notלָנוּunto usמָקוֹםa placeלִשְׁבוּיֵינוּfor our prisonersלִשְׁמֹרto guardעֲלֵיהֶםthemוּלְהַצִּילָםand keep themמִצִּבְאוֹתfrom the armies ofהַלָּמָנִיםthe Lamanitesלָכֵןthereforeשְׁלַחְנוּםwe sent themאֶל־אֶרֶץto the land ofזָרַהֶמְלָהZarahemlaוְעִמָּםand with themחֵלֶקa part ofמֵאַנְשֵׁיof the men ofאַנְטִיפּוּסAntipusאֲשֶׁרwhoלֹאnotנֶהֶרְגוּwere slainוְאֶת־הַנּוֹתָרִיםand the remainderלָקַחְתִּיI tookוָאֶסְפְּחֵםand joined themאֶל־בְּנֵיto the sons ofהָעַמּוֹנִיםthe Ammonitesהַצְּעִירִיםthe striplingאֲשֶׁרwho wereלִיmineוַנִּשָּׂאand tookמַסָּעֵנוּour marchאֶל־עִירto the city ofיְהוּדָה׃Judea

    And as we had no place for our prisoners, that we could guard them to keep them from the armies of the Lamanites, therefore we sent them to the land of Zarahemla, and a part of those men who were not slain of Antipus, with them; and the remainder I took and joined them to my stripling Ammonites, and took our march back to the city of Judea.
