   And now it came to pass that according to our record, and we know our record to be true, for behold, it was a just man who did keep the record—for he truly did many miracles in the name of Jesus; and there was not any man who could do a miracle in the name of Jesus save he were cleansed every whit from his iniquity—

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedאִם־לֹאim-loif notשָׁגָהsha/GAerredהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisבְּחֶשְׁבּוֹןbe/chesh/BONin the reckoningזְמַנֵּנוּze/man/ne/NUof our timeוְעָבְרָהve/a/ve/RAand passed awayשְׁנַתshe/NATyearשְׁלֹשִׁיםshe/lo/SHIMof thirtyוְשָׁלֹשׁ׃ve/sha/LOSHand third

   And now it came to pass, if there was no mistake made by this man in the reckoning of our time, the thirty and third year had passed away;

   וַיָּחֶלvay/YA/cheland beganהָעָםha/AMthe peopleלְצַפּוֹתle/tsap/POTto lookבְּכׇל־מְאֹדָםbe/KHOL-me/o/DAMwith all their mightלָאוֹתla/OTfor the signאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִתַּןnit/TANwas givenבִּידֵיbi/DEby the handsשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELof Samuelהַלָּמָנִיhal/LA/ma/nithe Lamaniteהַנָּבִיאhan/na/VIthe prophetאַףafyeaלָעֵתla/ETfor the timeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיִהְיֶהyih/YEthere should beחֹשֶׁךְCHO/shekhdarknessשְׁלֹשֶׁתshe/LO/shetthreeיָמִיםya/MIMdaysעַל־פְּנֵיal-pe/NEupon the faceהָאָרֶץ׃ha/A/retsof the land

   And the people began to look with great earnestness for the sign which had been given by the prophet Samuel, the Lamanite, yea, for the time that there should be darkness for the space of three days over the face of the land.

   וַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand beganלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTto beלְבָבוֹתle/va/VOTheartsתְּלֻאִיםte/lu/IMhangingוּמְרִיבוֹתu/me/ri/VOTand disputationsגְּדוֹלוֹתge/do/LOTgreatבָּעָםba/AMamong the peopleאַף־גַּם־זֹאתaf-gam-zotnotwithstandingנִתְּנוּnit/te/NUwere givenאֹתוֹתo/TOTsignsרַבִּים׃rab/BIMmany

   And there began to be great doubtings and disputations among the people, notwithstanding so many signs had been given.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedבִּשְׁנַתbish/NATin the yearשְׁלֹשִׁיםshe/lo/SHIMof thirtyוְאַרְבַּעve/ar/BAand fourthבַּחֹדֶשׁba/CHO/deshin the monthהָרִאשׁוֹןha/ri/SHONthe firstבְּאַרְבָּעָהbe/ar/ba/Aon the fourthלַחֹדֶשׁla/CHO/deshof the monthוַתָּקׇםvat/TA/komand aroseסְעָרָהse/a/RAa stormגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichכָּמוֹהָka/MO/halike itלֹאlonotנוֹדְעָהnod/Ahad been knownבְּכׇל־הָאָרֶץ׃be/KHOL-ha/A/retsin all the land

   And it came to pass in the thirty and fourth year, in the first month, on the fourth day of the month, there arose a great storm, such an one as never had been known in all the land.

   וַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand there wasגַם־סוּפָהgam-su/FAalso a tempestגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatוְנוֹרָאָהve/no/ra/Aand terribleוַיְהִיvay/HIand there wasרַעַםRA/amthunderנוֹרָאno/RAterribleעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatהִרְעִידhir/IDit shookאֶת־כׇּל־הָאָרֶץet-kol-ha/A/retsall the earthכְּבוֹאke/VOas if aboutלְהִבָּקַע׃le/hib/ba/KAto divide asunder

   And there was also a great and terrible tempest; and there was terrible thunder, insomuch that it did shake the whole earth as if it was about to divide asunder.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand there wereבְרָקִיםve/ra/KIMlightningsחַדִּיםchad/DIMsharpמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichכָּמוֹהֶםka/mo/HEMlike themלֹאlonotנוֹדְעוּnod/Uhad been knownבְּכׇל־הָאָרֶץ׃be/KHOL-ha/A/retsin all the land

   And there were exceedingly sharp lightnings, such as never had been known in all the land.

8. 8

   וַתֵּצֵאvat/te/TSEand went forthאֵשׁeshfireבְּעִירbe/IRin the cityזָרַהֶמְלָה׃Za/ra/HEM/laof Zarahemla

   And the city of Zarahemla did take fire.

9. 9

   וַתִּשְׁקַעvat/tish/KAand sankהָעִירha/IRthe cityמוֹרוֹנִיMo/RO/niof Moroniבִּמְצוּלוֹתbim/tsu/LOTin the depthsהַיָּםhay/YAMof the seaוַיִּטְבְּעוּvay/yit/be/Uand were drownedיוֹשְׁבֶיהָ׃yosh/VE/hathe inhabitants thereof

   And the city of Moroni did sink into the depths of the sea, and the inhabitants thereof were drowned.

    וַתִּנָּשֵׂאvat/tin/na/SEand was carried upהָאֲדָמָהha/a/da/MAthe earthעַל־הָעִירal-ha/IRupon the cityמוֹרוֹנִיהָהMo/ro/NI/haof Moronihahעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatבִּמְקוֹםbim/KOMin the placeהָעִירha/IRof the cityהָיָהha/YAthere becameהַרhara mountainגָּדוֹל׃ga/DOLgreat

    And the earth was carried up upon the city of Moronihah, that in the place of the city there became a great mountain.

11. 11

    וַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand there wasהַשְׁחָתָהhash/cha/TAa destructionגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatוְנוֹרָאָהve/no/ra/Aand terribleבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landדָּרוֹמָה׃da/ro/MAsouthward

    And there was a great and terrible destruction in the land southward.

12. 12

    אַךְakhbutהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdהָיְתָהha/ye/TAthere wasהַשְׁחָתָהhash/cha/TAa destructionגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatוְנוֹרָאָהve/no/ra/Aand terribleיוֹתֵרyo/TERmoreבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landצָפוֹנָהtsa/FO/nanorthwardכִּיkiforהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdנֶהֶפְכוּne/hef/KHUthey were changedכׇּל־פְּנֵיkol-pe/NEall the faceהָאָרֶץha/A/retsof the landבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofהַסּוּפָהhas/su/FAthe tempestוְהַסְּעָרוֹתve/has/se/a/ROTand the whirlwindsוְהָרְעָמִיםve/ha/re/a/MIMand the thunderingsוְהַבְּרָקִיםve/hab/be/ra/KIMand the lightningsוְרַעַשׁve/RA/ashand the quakingכׇּל־הָאָרֶץkol-ha/A/retsof the whole earthהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLthe greatמְאֹד׃me/ODexceedingly

    But behold, there was a more great and terrible destruction in the land northward; for behold, the whole face of the land was changed, because of the tempest and the whirlwinds, and the thunderings and the lightnings, and the exceedingly great quaking of the whole earth;

    וַיִּשָּׁבְרוּvay/yish/sha/ve/RUand were broken upהַמְּסִלּוֹתham/me/sil/LOTthe highwaysוְהַדְּרָכִיםve/had/de/ra/KHIMand the roadsהַיְשָׁרוֹתhay/sha/ROTthe levelנֶהֶרְסוּne/her/SUwere spoiledוּמְקוֹמוֹתu/me/ko/MOTand placesחֲלָקִיםcha/la/KIMsmoothרַבִּיםrab/BIMmanyהָיוּha/YUbecameלִרְכָסִים׃lir/kha/SIMrough

    And the highways were broken up, and the level roads were spoiled, and many smooth places became rough.

14. 14

    וְעָרִיםve/a/RIMand citiesגְּדוֹלוֹתge/do/LOTgreatוְנוֹדָעוֹתve/no/da/OTand notableרַבּוֹתrab/BOTmanyשָׁקְעוּsha/ke/Uwere sunkוְרַבּוֹתve/rab/BOTand manyנִשְׂרְפוּnis/re/FUwere burnedוְרַבּוֹתve/rab/BOTand manyנִרְעֲשׁוּnir/a/SHUwere shakenעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatנָפְלוּna/fe/LUfellבִּנְיָנֵיהֶןbin/ya/ne/HENtheir buildingsאַרְצָהAR/tsato the earthוְיוֹשְׁבֵיהֶןve/yosh/ve/HENand the inhabitants thereofהוּמְתוּhum/TUwere slainוְהַמְּקוֹמוֹתve/ham/me/ko/MOTand the placesנֶעֶזְבוּne/ez/VUwere leftשְׁמָמָה׃she/ma/MAdesolate

    And many great and notable cities were sunk, and many were burned, and many were shaken till the buildings thereof had fallen to the earth, and the inhabitants thereof were slain, and the places were left desolate.

15. 15

    וַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand there wereעָרִיםa/RIMcitiesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִשְׁאֲרוּnish/a/RUremainedאַךְakhbutשִׁבְרָןshiv/RANtheir damageהָיָהha/YAwasגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreatמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyוְרַבִּיםve/rab/BIMand manyבָּהֶןba/HENin themהוּמְתוּ׃hum/TUwere slain

    And there were some cities which remained; but the damage thereof was exceedingly great, and there were many in them who were slain.

16. 16

    וְיֵשׁve/YESHand there wereאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִשְּׂאוּnis/se/Uwere carried awayבַּסּוּפָהbas/su/FAin the whirlwindוְאָנָהve/A/naand whitherהָלְכוּha/le/KHUthey wentלֹאlonotיָדַעya/DAknowsאִישׁishmanכִּי־אִםki-imsaveיוֹדְעִיםyod/IMthey knowכִּיkithatנִשְּׂאוּ׃nis/se/Uwere carried away

    And there were some who were carried away in the whirlwind; and whither they went no man knoweth, save they know that they were carried away.

17. 17

    וְכֵןve/KHENand thusנֶהֶפְכוּne/hef/KHUwere deformedפְּנֵיpe/NEthe faceכׇל־הָאָרֶץkhol-ha/A/retsof all the earthבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofהַסְּעָרוֹתhas/se/a/ROTthe tempestsוְהָרְעָמִיםve/ha/re/a/MIMand the thunderingsוְהַבְּרָקִיםve/hab/be/ra/KIMand the lightningsוְרַעַשׁve/RA/ashand the quakingהָאָרֶץ׃ha/A/retsof the earth

    And thus the face of the whole earth became deformed, because of the tempests, and the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the quaking of the earth.

18. 18

    וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdהַצּוּרִיםhats/tsu/RIMthe rocksנִבְקְעוּniv/ke/Uwere rentלִשְׁנַיִםlish/NA/yimin twainנִשְׁבְּרוּnish/be/RUwere broken upעַל־פְּנֵיal-pe/NEupon the faceכׇל־הָאָרֶץkhol-ha/A/retsof all the earthעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatנִמְצְאוּnim/tse/Uthey were foundבִּשְׁבָרִיםbish/va/RIMin fragmentsוּבִבְקִיעִיםu/viv/ki/IMand in seamsוּבִנְקִיקִיםu/vin/ki/KIMand in cracksעַל־כׇּל־פְּנֵיal-kol-pe/NEupon all the faceהָאָרֶץ׃ha/A/retsof the land

    And behold, the rocks were rent in twain; they were broken up upon the face of the whole earth, insomuch that they were found in broken fragments, and in seams and in cracks, upon all the face of the land.

19. 19

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenחָדְלוּcha/de/LUceasedהָרְעָמִיםha/re/a/MIMthe thunderingsוְהַבְּרָקִיםve/hab/be/ra/KIMand the lightningsוְהַסְּעָרָהve/has/se/a/RAand the stormוְהַסּוּפָהve/has/su/FAand the tempestוְרַעַשׁve/RA/ashand the quakingsהָאָרֶץha/A/retsof the earthכִּיkiforהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאָרְכוּa/re/KHUthey lastedכְּשָׁלֹשׁke/sha/LOSHabout threeשָׁעוֹתsha/OThoursוְיֵשׁve/YESHand there wereאֲשֶׁר־אָמְרוּa/SHER-a/me/RUwho saidכִּיkithatהָעֵתha/ETthe timeהָיְתָהha/ye/TAwasרַבָּהrab/BAgreatיוֹתֵרyo/TERmoreוְאַךְve/AKHand neverthelessכׇּל־הַדְּבָרִיםkol-had/de/va/RIMall thingsהַגְּדוֹלִיםhag/ge/do/LIMthe greatוְהַנּוֹרָאִיםve/han/no/ra/IMand the terribleהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseנַעֲשׂוּna/a/SUwere doneבִּכְשָׁלֹשׁbikh/sha/LOSHin about threeשָׁעוֹתsha/OThoursוְאָזve/AZand thenהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdהָיָהha/YAthere wasחֹשֶׁךְCHO/shekhdarknessעַל־פְּנֵיal-pe/NEupon the faceהָאָרֶץ׃ha/A/retsof the land

    And it came to pass that when the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the storm, and the tempest, and the quakings of the earth did cease—for behold, they did last for about the space of three hours; and it was said by some that the time was greater; nevertheless, all these great and terrible things were done in about the space of three hours—and then behold, there was darkness upon the face of the land.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand there wasחֹשֶׁךְCHO/shekhdarknessכָּבֵדka/VEDthickעַל־כׇּל־פְּנֵיal-kol-pe/NEupon all the faceהָאָרֶץha/A/retsof the landעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatיוֹשְׁבֶיהָyosh/VE/hathe inhabitants thereofאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichלֹא־נָפְלוּlo-na/fe/LUhad not fallenיָכְלוּya/khe/LUcouldלָמֻשׁla/MUSHto feelאֶת־עֲרָפֶלet-a/ra/FELthe vaporהַחֹשֶׁךְ׃ha/CHO/shekhof the darkness

    And it came to pass that there was thick darkness upon all the face of the land, insomuch that the inhabitants thereof who had not fallen could feel the vapor of darkness;

21. 21

    וְלֹא־יָכֹלve/LO-ya/KHOLand could notלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTto beאוֹרora lightבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofהַחֹשֶׁךְha/CHO/shekhthe darknessלֹאloneitherנֵרוֹתne/ROTcandlesוְלֹאve/LOnorלַפִּידִיםlap/pi/DIMtorchesוְגַםve/GAMand alsoלֹא־יָכְלוּlo-ya/khe/LUcould notלְהַדְלִיקle/had/LIKto kindleאֵשׁeshfireבַּעֲצֵיהֶםba/a/tse/HEMwith their woodהַטּוֹבִיםhat/to/VIMthe fineוְהַיְּבֵשִׁיםve/hay/ye/ve/SHIMand the dryמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatלֹא־יָכֹלlo-ya/KHOLcould notלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTto beכׇּל־אוֹר׃kol-orany light

    And there could be no light, because of the darkness, neither candles, neither torches; neither could there be fire kindled with their fine and exceedingly dry wood, so that there could not be any light at all;

22. 22

    וְלֹאve/LOand notנִרְאָהnir/Awas seenכׇל־אוֹרkhol-orany lightלֹאloneitherאֵשׁeshfireוְלֹאve/LOnorנֹגַהּNO/gaglimmerלֹאloneitherשֶׁמֶשׁSHE/meshthe sunוְלֹאve/LOnorיָרֵחַya/RE/achthe moonוְלֹאve/LOnorכוֹכָבִיםkho/kha/VIMthe starsכִּי־כֹהki-khofor soגָּדְלוּga/de/LUwere greatעַרְפִלֵּיar/fil/LEthe mistsהַחֹשֶׁךְha/CHO/shekhof the darknessאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעַל־פְּנֵיal-pe/NEupon the faceהָאָרֶץ׃ha/A/retsof the land

    And there was not any light seen, neither fire, nor glimmer, neither the sun, nor the moon, nor the stars, for so great were the mists of darkness which were upon the face of the land.

23. 23

    וַיֶּאֱרַךְvay/ye/e/RAKHand lastedהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARthe thingשְׁלֹשֶׁתshe/LO/shetthreeיָמִיםya/MIMdaysוְלֹאve/LOand notנִרְאָהnir/Awas seenאוֹרorlightוַיְהִיvay/HIand there wasאֵבֶלE/velmourningגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreatוִילָלָהvi/la/LAand howlingוּבְכִיu/ve/KHIand weepingבֵּיןbenamongכׇּל־הָעָםkol-ha/AMall the peopleתָּמִידta/MIDcontinuallyאַףafyeaגָּדְלוּga/de/LUwere greatאַנְחוֹתan/CHOTthe groaningsהָעָםha/AMof the peopleבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofהַחֹשֶׁךְha/CHO/shekhthe darknessוְהַהֶרֶסve/ha/HE/resand the destructionהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLthe greatאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichבָּאbacameעֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMupon them

    And it came to pass that it did last for the space of three days that there was no light seen; and there was great mourning and howling and weeping among all the people continually; yea, great were the groanings of the people, because of the darkness and the great destruction which had come upon them.

    וּבְמָקוֹםu/ve/ma/KOMand in a placeאֶחָדe/CHADoneנִשְׁמְעוּnish/me/Uthey were heardזוֹעֲקִיםzo/a/KIMcrying outלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאֲהָהּa/HAOלוּluifשַׁבְנוּSHAV/nuwe repentedלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLthe greatוְהַנּוֹרָאve/han/no/RAand the terribleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוְאָזve/AZand thenנִצְּלוּnits/tse/LUwould have been sparedאַחֵינוּa/CHE/nuour brethrenוְלֹאve/LOand notנִשְׂרְפוּnis/re/FUhave been burnedבָּעִירba/IRin the cityהַגְּדוֹלָהhag/ge/do/LAthe greatזָרַהֶמְלָה׃Za/ra/HEM/laZarahemla

    And in one place they were heard to cry, saying: O that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and then would our brethren have been spared, and they would not have been burned in that great city Zarahemla.

    וּבְמָקוֹםu/ve/ma/KOMand in a placeאַחֵרa/CHERanotherנִשְׁמְעוּnish/me/Uthey were heardזוֹעֲקִיםzo/a/KIMcrying outוּמְקוֹנְנִיםu/me/kon/NIMand mourningלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאֲהָהּa/HAOלוּluifשַׁבְנוּSHAV/nuwe repentedלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLthe greatוְהַנּוֹרָאve/han/no/RAand the terribleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוְלֹאve/LOand notהָרַגְנוּha/rag/NUwe killedוְרָגַמְנוּve/ra/gam/NUand stonedאֶת־הַנְּבִיאִיםet-han/ne/vi/IMthe prophetsוְגֵרַשְׁנוּםve/ge/rash/NUMand cast them outאָזazthenנִצְּלוּnits/tse/LUwould have been sparedאִמּוֹתֵינוּim/mo/te/NUour mothersוּבְנוֹתֵינוּu/ve/no/TE/nuand our daughtersהַיָּפוֹתhay/ya/FOTthe fairוִילָדֵינוּvi/la/de/NUand our childrenוְלֹאve/LOand notנִקְבְּרוּnik/be/RUhave been buried upבָּעִירba/IRin the cityהַגְּדוֹלָהhag/ge/do/LAthe greatמוֹרוֹנִיהָהMo/ro/NI/haMoronihahוְכֵןve/KHENand thusהָיְתָהha/ye/TAwasיִלְלַתyil/LATthe howlingsהָעָםha/AMof the peopleגְּדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatוְנוֹרָאָה׃ve/no/ra/Aand terrible

    And in another place they were heard to cry and mourn, saying: O that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and had not killed and stoned the prophets, and cast them out; then would our mothers and our fair daughters, and our children have been spared, and not have been buried up in that great city Moronihah. And thus were the howlings of the people great and terrible.
