   And now it came to pass that in the sixteenth year from the coming of Christ, Lachoneus, the governor of the land, received an epistle from the leader and the governor of this band of robbers; and these were the words which were written, saying:

   Lachoneus, most noble and chief governor of the land, behold, I write this epistle unto you, and do give unto you exceedingly great praise because of your firmness, and also the firmness of your people, in maintaining that which ye suppose to be your right and liberty; yea, ye do stand well, as if ye were supported by the hand of a god, in the defence of your liberty, and your property, and your country, or that which ye do call so.

   And it seemeth a pity unto me, most noble Lachoneus, that ye should be so foolish and vain as to suppose that ye can stand against so many brave men who are at my command, who do now at this time stand in their arms, and do await with great anxiety for the word—Go down upon the Nephites and destroy them.

   וַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iבְּדַעְתִּיbe/da/TIin my knowingאֶת־רוּחָםet-ru/CHAMtheir spiritאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichלֹאlonotתִכָּבֵשׁtik/ka/VESHshall be conqueredוּבְבׇחֳנִיu/ve/vo/cho/NIand having provedאוֹתָםo/TAMthemבִּשְׂדֵהbis/DEin the fieldהַקְּרָבhak/ke/RAVof the battleוּבְדַעְתִּיu/ve/da/TIand as I knowאֶת־שִׂנְאָתָםet-sin/a/TAMtheir hatredאֲשֶׁר־לְעוֹלָםa/SHER-le/o/LAMthe eternalאֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMunto youבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofהָרָעוֹתha/ra/OTthe wrongsהָרַבּוֹתha/rab/BOTthe manyאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעֲשִׂיתֶםa/si/TEMyou didלָהֶםla/HEMunto themלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeאִםimifיֵרְדוּyer/DUthey should come downעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMupon youיִפְקְדוּyif/ke/DUthey shall visitאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouבְּאׇבְדָןbe/ov/DANwith destructionכָּלִיל׃ka/LILutter

   And I, knowing of their unconquerable spirit, having proved them in the field of battle, and knowing of their everlasting hatred towards you because of the many wrongs which ye have done unto them, therefore if they should come down against you they would visit you with utter destruction.

   Therefore I have written this epistle, sealing it with mine own hand, feeling for your welfare, because of your firmness in that which ye believe to be right, and your noble spirit in the field of battle.

   לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeכּוֹתֵבko/TEVwriteאֲנִיa/NIIאֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMunto youחָפֵץcha/FETSdesiringכִּיkithatתִתְּנוּtit/te/NUyou giveלְעַמִּיle/am/MIunto my peopleזֶהzethisאֶת־עָרֵיכֶםet-a/re/KHEMyour citiesאַרְצוֹתֵיכֶםar/tso/te/KHEMyour landsוּרְכוּשְׁכֶםu/re/khush/KHEMand your substanceתַּחַתTA/chatrather thanאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatיִפְקְדוּyif/ke/DUthey shall visitאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouבַּחֶרֶבba/CHE/revby the swordוּבוֹאu/VOand surelyתָבוֹאta/VOshall comeעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMupon youהַשְׁחָתָה׃hash/cha/TAdestruction

   Therefore I write unto you, desiring that ye would yield up unto this my people, your cities, your lands, and your possessions, rather than that they should visit you with the sword and that destruction should come upon you.

   אוֹoorבִּדְבָרִיםbid/va/RIMin wordsאֲחֵרִיםa/che/RIMotherהִסָּגְרוּhis/sa/ge/RUyield yourselves upאֵלֵינוּe/LE/nuunto usוְהִתְחַבְּרוּve/hit/chab/be/RUand uniteעִמָּנוּim/MA/nuwith usוְהִתְוַדְּעוּve/hit/vad/de/Uand make yourselves knownאֶלeltoמַעֲשֵׂיma/a/SEthe worksסִתְרֵנוּsit/re/NUof our secretוִהְיוּvih/YUand beלָנוּLA/nuunto usלְאַחִיםle/a/CHIMto brethrenלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatתִּהְיוּtih/YUyou shall beכָּמוֹנוּka/mo/NUeven as usלֹאlonotעֲבָדֵינוּa/va/de/NUour slavesכִּי־אִםki-imbut ratherאַחֵינוּa/CHE/nuour brethrenוְחַבְרֵינוּve/chav/re/NUand our partnersבְּכׇלbe/KHOLwith allרְכוּשֵׁנוּ׃re/khu/SHE/nuour substance

   Or in other words, yield yourselves up unto us, and unite with us and become acquainted with our secret works, and become our brethren that ye may be like unto us—not our slaves, but our brethren and partners of all our substance.

   וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdנִשְׁבָּעnish/BAswearאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMto youאִם־תַּעֲשׂוּim-ta/a/SUif you doזֹאתzotthisבִּשְׁבוּעָהbish/vu/Awith an oathלֹאlonotתֻשְׁמְדוּtush/me/DUyou shall be destroyedוְאִם־לֹאve/IM-loand if notתַעֲשׂוּta/a/SUshall you doזֹאתzotthisנִשְׁבָּעnish/BAswearאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMto youבִּשְׁבוּעָהbish/vu/Awith an oathכִּיkithatבַּחֹדֶשׁba/CHO/deshin the monthהַבָּאhab/BAthat comesאֲצַוֶּהa/tsav/VEI will commandאֶת־צִבְאוֹתַיet-tsiv/o/TAYmy armiesלָרֶדֶתla/RE/detto descendעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMupon youוְלֹאve/LOand notיַחְשְׂכוּyach/se/KHUthey shall withholdיָדָםya/DAMtheir handוְלֹאve/LOand notיָחוּסוּya/chu/SUthey shall spareכִּי־אִםki-imbut ratherיַהַרְגוּya/har/GUshall slayאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouוְהִפִּילוּve/hip/PI/luand they shall let fallחֶרֶבCHE/revthe swordעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMupon youעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilתִּכָּרְתוּ׃tik/ka/re/TUyou shall be cut off

   And behold, I swear unto you, if ye will do this, with an oath, ye shall not be destroyed; but if ye will not do this, I swear unto you with an oath, that on the morrow month I will command that my armies shall come down against you, and they shall not stay their hand and shall spare not, but shall slay you, and shall let fall the sword upon you even until ye shall become extinct.

   וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdאֲנִיa/NIIגִּדְיָנְהִיGid/YAN/hiGiddianhiוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iמוֹשֵׁלmo/SHELthe governorחֶבְרַתchev/RATof the societyהַסֵּתֶרhas/SE/terof secretהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichלְגָדִיאַנְטוֹןle/Ga/di/an/TONto Gadiantonאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהַחֶבְרָהha/chev/RAthe societyוּמַעֲשֶׂיהָu/ma/a/SE/haand its worksיוֹדֵעַyo/DE/aknowאֲנִיa/NIIכִּיkithatטוֹבִיםto/VIMgoodהֵםhemtheyוּמִימֵיu/MI/meand from the daysקֶדֶםKE/demof oldהֵםhemtheyוְהׇעׇבְרוּve/ho/ov/RUand have been handed downאֵלֵינוּ׃e/LE/nuunto us

   And behold, I am Giddianhi; and I am the governor of this the secret society of Gadianton; which society and the works thereof I know to be good; and they are of ancient date and they have been handed down unto us.

    And I write this epistle unto you, Lachoneus, and I hope that ye will deliver up your lands and your possessions, without the shedding of blood, that this my people may recover their rights and government, who have dissented away from you because of your wickedness in retaining from them their rights of government, and except ye do this, I will avenge their wrongs. I am Giddianhi.

    And now it came to pass when Lachoneus received this epistle he was exceedingly astonished, because of the boldness of Giddianhi demanding the possession of the land of the Nephites, and also of threatening the people and avenging the wrongs of those that had received no wrong, save it were they had wronged themselves by dissenting away unto those wicked and abominable robbers.

    Now behold, this Lachoneus, the governor, was a just man, and could not be frightened by the demands and the threatenings of a robber; therefore he did not hearken to the epistle of Giddianhi, the governor of the robbers, but he did cause that his people should cry unto the Lord for strength against the time that the robbers should come down against them.

    הֵןhenyeaהֶעֱבִירhe/e/VIRhe sent forthקוֹלkola proclamationבְּכׇל־הָעָםbe/KHOL-ha/AMamong all the peopleלֶאֱסֹףle/e/SOFto gatherיַחַדYA/chadtogetherאֶת־נְשֵׁיהֶםet-ne/she/HEMtheir wivesוְטַפָּםve/tap/PAMand their childrenצֹאנָםtso/NAMtheir flocksוּבְקָרָםu/ve/ka/RAMand their herdsוְכׇל־רְכוּשָׁםve/KHOL-re/khu/SHAMand all their substanceכִּי־אִםki-imsave it wereאַדְמָתָםad/ma/TAMtheir landאֶל־מָקוֹםel-ma/KOMto a placeאֶחָד׃e/CHADone

    Yea, he sent a proclamation among all the people, that they should gather together their women, and their children, their flocks and their herds, and all their substance, save it were their land, unto one place.

    And he caused that fortifications should be built round about them, and the strength thereof should be exceedingly great. And he caused that armies, both of the Nephites and of the Lamanites, or of all them who were numbered among the Nephites, should be placed as guards round about to watch them, and to guard them from the robbers day and night.

    Yea, he said unto them: As the Lord liveth, except ye repent of all your iniquities, and cry unto the Lord, ye will in nowise be delivered out of the hands of those Gadianton robbers.

    And so great and marvelous were the words and prophecies of Lachoneus that they did cause fear to come upon all the people; and they did exert themselves in their might to do according to the words of Lachoneus.

    וַיְמַןvay/MANand he appointedלָכוֹנֵאוּסLa/KHO/ne/usLachoneusשָׂרֵיsa/REchief captainsצְבָאוֹתtse/va/OTof armiesעַלaloverכׇּל־צִבְאוֹתkol-tsiv/OTall the armiesהַנֶּפִיִּיםhan/Ne/fiy/YIMof the Nephitesלְצַוֹּתle/tsav/VOTto commandעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMover themבְּעֵתbe/ETat the timeיֵרְדוּyer/DUshall come downהַשּׁוֹדְדִיםhash/shod/DIMthe robbersמִן־הַמִּדְבָּרmin-ham/mid/BARfrom the wildernessעֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMagainst them

    And it came to pass that Lachoneus did appoint chief captains over all the armies of the Nephites, to command them at the time that the robbers should come down out of the wilderness against them.

18. 18

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהָרֹאשׁha/ROSHthe chiefמִכׇּלmik/KOLamong allשָׂרֵיsa/REcaptainsהַצְּבָאוֹתhats/tse/va/OTof the armiesוְהַנָּגִידve/han/na/GIDand the commanderהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLthe greatעַלaloverכׇּל־צִבְאוֹתkol-tsiv/OTall the armiesהַנֶּפִיִּיםhan/Ne/fiy/YIMof the Nephitesהֻפְקַדhuf/KADwas appointedוּשְׁמוֹu/she/MOwhose name wasגִּדְגִּדּוֹנִי׃Gid/gid/DO/niGidgiddoni

    Now the chiefest among all the chief captains and the great commander of all the armies of the Nephites was appointed, and his name was Gidgiddoni.

19. 19

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedמִשְׁפַּטmish/PATthe customכׇּלkolof allהַנֶּפִיִּיםhan/Ne/fiy/YIMthe Nephitesלְהַפְקִידle/haf/KIDto appointלְשָׂרֵיle/sa/REto captainsצִבְאוֹתֵיהֶםtsiv/o/te/HEMof their armiesכִּי־אִםki-imsave it wereבִּימֵיbi/MEin the daysרִשְׁעָתָםrish/a/TAMof their wickednessאִישׁisha manאֲשֶׁר־יֵשׁa/SHER-yeshthat there isבּוֹboin himרוּחַRU/achthe spiritהֶחָזוֹןhe/cha/ZONof the revelationוְגַםve/GAMand alsoהַנְּבוּאָהhan/ne/vu/Aprophecyלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeהָיָהha/YAwasגִּדְגִּדּוֹנִיGid/gid/DO/niGidgiddoniזֶהzethisנָבִיאna/VIa prophetגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreatבֵּינֵיהֶםbe/ne/HEMamong themוְגַםve/GAMand alsoהַשֹּׁפֵטhash/sho/FETthe judgeהָרֹאשׁ׃ha/ROSHthe chief

    Now it was the custom among all the Nephites to appoint for their chief captains, (save it were in their times of wickedness) some one that had the spirit of revelation and also prophecy; therefore, this Gidgiddoni was a great prophet among them, as also was the chief judge.

20. 20

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand saidהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאֶלeltoגִּדְגִּדּוֹנִיGid/gid/DO/niGidgiddoniהִתְפַּלֵּלhit/pal/LELprayאֶל־יְהוָהel-Adonaito Adonaiוְנַעֲלֶהve/na/a/LEand let us go upאֶל־הֶהָרִיםel-he/ha/RIMto the mountainsוְאֶל־הַמִּדְבָּרve/EL-ham/mid/BARand to the wildernessלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatנִפֹּלnip/POLwe may fallעַלaluponהַשּׁוֹדְדִיםhash/shod/DIMthe robbersוְנַשְׁמִידֵםve/nash/mi/DEMand we shall destroy themבְּאַרְצוֹתֵיהֶם׃be/ar/tso/te/HEMin their lands

    Now the people said unto Gidgiddoni: Pray unto the Lord, and let us go up upon the mountains and into the wilderness, that we may fall upon the robbers and destroy them in their own lands.

21. 21

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themגִּדְגִּדּוֹנִיGid/gid/DO/niGidgiddoniחָלִילָהcha/LI/lafar be itמֵיְהוָהme-Adonaifrom Adonaiכִּי־אִםki-imfor ifנַעֲלֶהna/a/LEwe should go upעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiיִתְּנֵנוּyit/te/ne/NUhe shall give usבְּיָדָםbe/ya/DAMinto their handsלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeנִכּוֹןnik/KONmay prepare ourselvesבְּתוֹךְbe/TOKHin the midstאַרְצוֹתֵינוּar/tso/te/NUof our landsוְנֶאֱסֹףve/ne/e/SOFand we will gatherאֶת־כׇּלet-kolallצִבְאוֹתֵינוּtsiv/o/te/NUour armiesיַחַדYA/chadtogetherוְלֹאve/LOand notנֵלֵךְne/LEKHwe should goעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themכִּי־אִםki-imbut ratherנוֹחִילno/CHILwe shall waitעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilיָבוֹאוּya/VO/uthey shall comeעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuupon usלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeחַי־יְהוָהchay-Adonaias Adonai livesאִםimifנַעֲשֶׂהna/a/SEwe doזֹאתzotthisיִתְּנֵםyit/te/NEMhe shall give themבְּיָדֵינוּ׃be/ya/DE/nuinto our hands

    But Gidgiddoni saith unto them: The Lord forbid; for if we should go up against them the Lord would deliver us into their hands; therefore we will prepare ourselves in the center of our lands, and we will gather all our armies together, and we will not go against them, but we will wait till they shall come against us; therefore as the Lord liveth, if we do this he will deliver them into our hands.

22. 22

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it wasבִּשְׁנַתbish/NATin the yearשְׁבַעshe/VAof sevenעֶשְׂרֵהes/REtenבְּאַחֲרִיתbe/a/cha/RITin the latter endהַשָּׁנָהhash/sha/NAof the yearוַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went forthקוֹלkolthe proclamationלָכוֹנֵאוּסla/KHO/ne/usof Lachoneusבְּכׇל־פְּנֵיbe/KHOL-pe/NEthroughout all the faceהָאָרֶץha/A/retsof the landוַיִּקְחוּvay/yik/CHUand they tookאֶת־סוּסֵיהֶםet-su/se/HEMtheir horsesוְאֶתve/ETandמַרְכְּבוֹתֵיהֶםmar/ke/vo/te/HEMtheir chariotsוְאֶתve/ETandמִקְנֵיהֶםmik/ne/HEMtheir cattleוְאֶתve/ETandכׇּלkolallצֹאנָםtso/NAMtheir flocksוּבְקָרָםu/ve/ka/RAMand their herdsוְאֶתve/ETandדְּגָנָםde/ga/NAMtheir grainוְאֶתve/ETandכׇּלkolallרְכוּשָׁםre/khu/SHAMtheir substanceוַיִּסְעוּvay/yis/Uand they journeyedלַאֲלָפִיםla/a/la/FIMby thousandsוְלִרְבָבוֹתve/lir/va/VOTand by tens of thousandsעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilהָלְכוּha/le/KHUwent forthכֻלָּםkhul/LAMallאֶל־הַמָּקוֹםel-ham/ma/KOMto the placeהַנּוֹעָדhan/no/ADwhich was appointedאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיִתְקַבְּצוּyit/kab/be/TSUgather togetherשָׁםshamthereלְהָגֵןle/ha/GENto protectעַל־נַפְשָׁםal-naf/SHAMover themselvesמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbecause ofאוֹיְבֵיהֶם׃oy/ve/HEMtheir enemies

    And it came to pass in the seventeenth year, in the latter end of the year, the proclamation of Lachoneus had gone forth throughout all the face of the land, and they had taken their horses, and their chariots, and their cattle, and all their flocks, and their herds, and their grain, and all their substance, and did march forth by thousands and by tens of thousands, until they had all gone forth to the place which had been appointed that they should gather themselves together, to defend themselves against their enemies.

    וְהָאָרֶץve/ha/A/retsand the landהַנּוֹעָדָהhan/no/a/DAthe appointedהָיְתָהha/ye/TAwasאֶרֶץE/retsthe landזָרַהֶמְלָהZa/ra/HEM/laof Zarahemlaוְהָאָרֶץve/ha/A/retsand the landאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichבֵּיןbenbetweenאֶרֶץE/retsthe landזָרַהֶמְלָהZa/ra/HEM/laof Zarahemlaוְאֶרֶץve/E/retsand landשֶׁפַעSHE/Faof Bountifulאַףafyeaעַדaduntilהַגְּבוּלhag/ge/VULthe borderאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichבֵּיןbenbetweenאֶרֶץE/retsthe landשֶׁפַעSHE/Faof Bountifulוְאֶרֶץve/E/retsand landהַשְּׁמָמָה׃hash/She/ma/MAof the Desolation

    And the land which was appointed was the land of Zarahemla, and the land which was between the land Zarahemla and the land Bountiful, yea, to the line which was between the land Bountiful and the land Desolation.

24. 24

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedרִבְבוֹתriv/VOTtens of thousandsרַבּוֹתrab/BOTmanyמִן־הָעָםmin-ha/AMof the peopleהַנִּקְרָאִיםhan/nik/ra/IMwho are calledנֶפִיִּיםNe/fiy/YIMNephitesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהִתְקַבְּצוּhit/kab/be/TSUgathered themselvesבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisוַיְצַוvay/TSAVand he commandedלָכוֹנֵאוּסLa/KHO/ne/usLachoneusכִּיkithatיִתְקַבְּצוּyit/kab/be/TSUthey will gatherבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landנֶגְבָּהNEG/basouthwardבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofהַקְּלָלָהhak/ke/la/LAthe curseהַגְּדוֹלָהhag/ge/do/LAthe greatאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעַל־הָאָרֶץal-ha/A/retsupon the landצָפוֹנָה׃tsa/FO/nanorthward

    And there were a great many thousand people who were called Nephites, who did gather themselves together in this land. Now Lachoneus did cause that they should gather themselves together in the land southward, because of the great curse which was upon the land northward.

25. 25

    וַיִּתְחַזְּקוּvay/yit/chaz/ze/KUand fortified themselvesמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbecause ofאוֹיְבֵיהֶםoy/ve/HEMtheir enemiesוַיֵּשְׁבוּvay/yesh/VUand they dweltבְּאֶרֶץbe/E/retsin a landאַחַתa/CHAToneוּבַאֲגֻדָּהu/va/a/gud/DAand in a bodyאַחַתa/CHAToneוַיִּירְאוּvay/yi/re/Uand they fearedמִדִּבְרֵיmid/div/REfrom the wordsלָכוֹנֵאוּסla/KHO/ne/usof Lachoneusעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatשָׁבוּSHA/vuthey repentedמִכׇּלmik/KOLfrom allחַטֹּאתֵיהֶםchat/to/te/HEMtheir sinsוַיִּשְׂאוּvay/yis/Uand they lifted upתְּפִלּוֹתֵיהֶםte/fil/lo/te/HEMtheir prayersאֶל־יְהוָהel-Adonaito Adonaiאֱלֹהֵיהֶםe/lo/he/HEMtheir Godכִּיkithatיַצִּילֵםyats/tsi/LEMhe would deliver themבְּעֵתbe/ETat the timeיֵרְדוּyer/DUshould come downאוֹיְבֵיהֶםoy/ve/HEMtheir enemiesעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themלַמִּלְחָמָה׃lam/mil/cha/MAto the battle

    And they did fortify themselves against their enemies; and they did dwell in one land, and in one body, and they did fear the words which had been spoken by Lachoneus, insomuch that they did repent of all their sins; and they did put up their prayers unto the Lord their God, that he would deliver them in the time that their enemies should come down against them to battle.

    וַיִּתְעַצְּבוּvay/yit/ats/tse/VUand they sorrowedמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbecause ofאוֹיְבֵיהֶםoy/ve/HEMtheir enemiesוַיְצַוvay/TSAVand he commandedגִּדְגִּדּוֹנִיGid/gid/DO/niGidgiddoniכִּיkithatיַעֲשׂוּya/a/SUthey should makeכְּלֵיke/LEweaponsמִלְחָמָהmil/cha/MAof warמִכׇּל־מִיןmik/KOL-minof every kindוַיִּתְחַזְּקוּvay/yit/chaz/ze/KUand fortified themselvesבְּשִׁרְיוֹןbe/shir/YONwith armorוּבְמָגֵןu/ve/ma/GENand with a shieldוּבְצִנָּהu/ve/tsin/NAand with a bucklerכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERaccording asהוֹרָם׃ho/RAMhe instructed them

    And they were exceedingly sorrowful because of their enemies. And Gidgiddoni did cause that they should make weapons of war of every kind, and they should be strong with armor, and with shields, and with bucklers, after the manner of his instruction.
