   גַּם־אֵלֶּהalso theseמִשְׁלֵיthe proverbs ofשְׁלֹמֹהSolomonאֲשֶׁרwhichהֶעְתִּיקוּcopied outאַנְשֵׁיthe men ofחִזְקִיָּהHezekiahמֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה׃king of Judah

   These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

2. 2

   כְּבֹדthe glory ofאֱלֹהִיםGodהַסְתֵּרto concealדָּבָרa wordוּכְבֹדand is the glory ofמְלָכִיםkingsחֲקֹרto search outדָּבָר׃a word

   It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

   שָׁמַיִםthe heavensלָרוּםfor heightוָאָרֶץand earthלָעֹמֶקfor depthוְלֵבand heartמְלָכִיםkingsאֵיןthere is noחֵקֶר׃unsearchable

   The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.

   הָגוֹtake awayסִיגִיםdrossמִכָּסֶףfrom the silverוַיֵּצֵאand went outלַצֹּרֵףfor the metalsmithכֶּלִי׃a vessel

   Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.

5. 5

   הָגוֹtake awayרָשָׁעwickedלִפְנֵי־מֶלֶךְbefore king ofוְיִכּוֹןso it may be establishedבַּצֶּדֶקin righteousnessכִּסְאוֹ׃his throne

   Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.

   אַל־תִּתְהַדַּרput not forth yourselfלִפְנֵי־מֶלֶךְbefore king ofוּבִמְקוֹםand in the placeגְּדֹלִיםgreatאַל־תַּעֲמֹד׃stand not

   Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:

   כִּיthatטוֹבgoodאֲמׇר־לְךָthat it be said to youעֲלֵה־הֵנָּהgo up hitherמֵהַשְׁפִּילְךָthan that you be put lowerלִפְנֵיbeforeנָדִיבwilling personאֲשֶׁרwhichרָאוּsawעֵינֶיךָ׃your eyes

   For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.

   אַל־תֵּצֵאgo not forthלָרִבto contest a lawsuitמַהֵרquicklyפֶּןlestמַה־תַּעֲשֶׂהwhat you will doבְּאַחֲרִיתָהּat its endבְּהַכְלִיםwhen puts to shameאֹתְךָyouרֵעֶךָ׃your neighbor

   Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.

9. 9

   רִיבְךָyour causeרִיבdebateאֶת־רֵעֶךָyour neighborוְסוֹדand the secret ofאַחֵרotherאַל־תְּגָל׃discover not

   Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another:

10. 10

    פֶּן־יְחַסֶּדְךָlest he put you to shameשֹׁמֵעַwho hearsוְדִבָּתְךָand your infamyלֹאnotתָשׁוּב׃turn away

    Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.

11. 11

    תַּפּוּחֵיapples ofזָהָבgoldבְּמַשְׂכִּיּוֹתin pictures ofכָּסֶףsilverדָּבָרa wordדָּבֻרspokenעַל־אׇפְנָיו׃fitly

    A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.

12. 12

    נֶזֶםa ring ofזָהָבgoldוַחֲלִי־כָתֶםand an ornament of fine goldמוֹכִיחַa reproverחָכָםwiseעַל־אֹזֶןupon an earשֹׁמָעַת׃obedient

    As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

13. 13

    כְּצִנַּת־שֶׁלֶגis like the cold of snowבְּיוֹםin the day ofקָצִירharvestצִירan envoyנֶאֱמָןfaithfulלְשֹׁלְחָיוto those who send himוְנֶפֶשׁand soulאֲדֹנָיוhis masterיָשִׁיב׃he refreshes

    As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.

14. 14

    נְשִׂיאִיםcloudsוְרוּחַand spirit ofוְגֶשֶׁםand rainאָיִןwithoutאִישׁa manמִתְהַלֵּלwho boastsבְּמַתַּת־שָׁקֶר׃by the gift false

    Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.

15. 15

    בְּאֹרֶךְin the length ofאַפַּיִםto angerיְפֻתֶּהis persuadedקָצִיןa princeוְלָשׁוֹןtongueרַכָּהsoftתִּשְׁבׇּר־גָּרֶם׃it may be broken bone

    By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

16. 16

    דְּבַשׁhoneyמָצָאתָfoundאֱכֹלeat itדַּיֶּךָּso much as is sufficient for youפֶּן־תִּשְׂבָּעֶנּוּlest you should be surfeited with itוַהֲקֵאתוֹ׃and you will vomit up it

    Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

17. 17

    הֹקַרwithdrawרַגְלְךָyour footמִבֵּיתfrom the house ofרֵעֶךָyour neighborפֶּן־יִשְׂבָּעֲךָlest he be weary of youוּשְׂנֵאֶךָ׃and he will hate you

    Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.

18. 18

    מֵפִיץa maulוְחֶרֶבand sword ofוְחֵץand an arrow ofשָׁנוּןsharpאִישׁa manעֹנֶהwho bears witnessבְרֵעֵהוּagainst his neighborעֵדwitnessשָׁקֶר׃false

    A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

19. 19

    שֵׁןa toothרֹעָהbrokenוְרֶגֶלand a footמוּעָדֶתout of jointמִבְטָחconfidence inבּוֹגֵדan unfaithful manבְּיוֹםin the day ofצָרָה׃affliction

    Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.

20. 20

    מַעֲדֶה־בֶּגֶדone who removes garmentבְּיוֹםin the day ofקָרָהcoldחֹמֶץvinegar ofעַל־נָתֶרupon sodaוְשָׁרand one who singsבַּשִּׁרִיםthe songsעַלuponלֶב־רָע׃a heavy heart

    As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.

21. 21

    אִם־רָעֵבif hungryשֹׂנַאֲךָone who hates youהַאֲכִלֵהוּgive to eat himלָחֶםfoodוְאִם־צָמֵאand if thirsty forהַשְׁקֵהוּgive to drink himמָיִם׃water

    If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

22. 22

    כִּיforגֶחָלִיםburning coalsאַתָּהyouחֹתֶהshall heapעַל־רֹאשׁוֹupon his headוַיהֹוָהand the LORDיְשַׁלֶּם־לָךְ׃he repays for you

    For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

23. 23

    רוּחַthe spirit ofצָפוֹןthe northתְּחוֹלֵלdrives awayגָּשֶׁםrainוּפָנִיםand facesנִזְעָמִיםangryלְשׁוֹןthe language ofסָתֶר׃a backbiting

    The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.

24. 24

    טוֹבgoodשֶׁבֶתto dwellעַל־פִּנַּת־גָּגupon a corner of a roofמֵאֵשֶׁתfrom the wife of(מדונים)[מִדְיָנִים]contentionsוּבֵיתand house ofחָבֶר׃in common

    It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.

25. 25

    מַיִםwaterקָרִיםcoolעַל־נֶפֶשׁupon soulעֲיֵפָהthirstyוּשְׁמוּעָהand a reportטוֹבָהgoodמֵאֶרֶץfrom the land ofמֶרְחָק׃far

    As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

26. 26

    מַעְיָןa springנִרְפָּשׂtroubledוּמָקוֹרand a fountainמׇשְׁחָתcorruptצַדִּיקrighteousמָטfalling downלִפְנֵי־רָשָׁע׃before wicked

    A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring.

27. 27

    אָכֹלto eatדְּבַשׁhoneyהַרְבּוֹתmuchלֹא־טוֹבnot goodוְחֵקֶרand the search ofכְּבֹדָםtheir own honorכָּבוֹד׃glory

    It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory.

28. 28

    עִירthe city ofפְּרוּצָהbroken intoאֵיןthere is noחוֹמָהa wallאִישׁa manאֲשֶׁרwhichאֵיןthere is noמַעְצָרruleלְרוּחוֹ׃to his spirit

    He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
