1. 1

   מַעֲנֶה־רַּךְa soft answerיָשִׁיבturns awayחֵמָהwrathוּדְבַר־עֶצֶבbut a grievous wordיַעֲלֶה־אָף׃stirs up anger

   A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

2. 2

   לְשׁוֹןthe language ofחֲכָמִיםwiseתֵּיטִיבuses arightדָּעַתknowledgeוּפִיand the mouth ofכְסִילִיםfoolsיַבִּיעַit pours forthאִוֶּלֶת׃foolishness

   The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

   בְּכׇל־מָקוֹםin all placeעֵינֵיthe eyes ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDצֹפוֹתwatchingרָעִיםevilוְטוֹבִים׃and the good

   The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

4. 4

   מַרְפֵּאwholesomeלָשׁוֹןtongueעֵץa treeחַיִּיםlifeוְסֶלֶףand the crookedness ofבָּהּin itשֶׁבֶרa fractureבְּרוּחַ׃in the spirit

   A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.

   אֱוִילfoolיִנְאַץhe spurnsמוּסַרthe discipline ofאָבִיוhis fatherוְשֹׁמֵרand he who regardsתּוֹכַחַתrebukeיַעְרִים׃is prudent

   A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

   בֵּיתthe house ofצַדִּיקrighteousחֹסֶןwealthרָבmuchוּבִתְבוּאַתand with the income ofרָשָׁעwickedנֶעְכָּרֶת׃is trouble

   In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

   שִׂפְתֵיthe lips ofחֲכָמִיםwiseיְזָרוּdisperseדָעַתknowledgeוְלֵבand heartכְּסִילִיםfoolsלֹא־כֵן׃does not so

   The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so.

8. 8

   זֶבַחsacrificeרְשָׁעִיםwicked menתּוֹעֲבַתan abomination beforeיְהֹוָהthe LORDוּתְפִלַּתand is the prayer ofיְשָׁרִיםthe uprightרְצוֹנוֹ׃His delight

   The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

9. 9

   תּוֹעֲבַתan abomination beforeיְהֹוָהthe LORDדֶּרֶךְthe way ofרָשָׁעwickedוּמְרַדֵּףand one who pursuesצְדָקָהrighteousnessיֶאֱהָב׃he loves

   The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the LORD: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.

10. 10

    מוּסָרdisciplineרָעevilלְעֹזֵבis for one who forsakesאֹרַחthe wayשׂוֹנֵאone who hatesתוֹכַחַתrebukeיָמוּת׃he shall die

    Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.

11. 11

    שְׁאוֹלSheolוַאֲבַדּוֹןand destructionנֶגֶדagainstיְהֹוָהthe LORDאַףmoreoverכִּי־לִבּוֹתbecause the hearts ofבְּנֵי־אָדָם׃the sons of men

    Hell and destruction are before the LORD: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?

12. 12

    לֹאnotיֶאֱהַב־לֵץa scorner lovesהוֹכֵחַone who reprovesלוֹto himאֶל־חֲכָמִיםto wiseלֹאnotיֵלֵךְ׃he must go

    A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.

13. 13

    לֵבheartשָׂמֵחַhappyיֵיטִבmakes cheerfulפָּנִיםfaceוּבְעַצְּבַת־לֵבand by sorrow of heartרוּחַthe spirit ofנְכֵאָה׃is stricken

    A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

14. 14

    לֵבheartנָבוֹןdiscerningיְבַקֶּשׁ־דָּעַתit seeks knowledge(ופני)[וּפִי]and a mouth ofכְסִילִיםfoolsיִרְעֶהfeeds onאִוֶּלֶת׃foolishness

    The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

15. 15

    כׇּל־יְמֵיall days ofעָנִיpoorרָעִיםevilוְטוֹב־לֵבbut he of a merry heartמִשְׁתֶּהfeastתָמִיד׃continually

    All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

16. 16

    טוֹב־מְעַטgood somewhatבְּיִרְאַתin the fear ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDמֵאוֹצָרmore than treasureרָבmuchוּמְהוּמָהand troubleבוֹ׃in him

    Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith.

17. 17

    טוֹבgoodאֲרֻחַתa dinner ofיָרָקvegetablesוְאַהֲבָה־שָׁםand love thereמִשּׁוֹרfrom an oxאָבוּסfattenedוְשִׂנְאָה־בוֹ׃and hatred therewith

    Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

18. 18

    אִישׁa manחֵמָהwrathיְגָרֶהhe stirs upמָדוֹןstrifeוְאֶרֶךְand slow toאַפַּיִםto angerיַשְׁקִיטhe makes quietרִיב׃contention

    A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

19. 19

    דֶּרֶךְthe way ofעָצֵלthe sluggardכִּמְשֻׂכַתlike a hedge ofחָדֶקthornsוְאֹרַחand the way ofיְשָׁרִיםthe uprightסְלֻלָה׃is cast up

    The way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain.

20. 20

    בֵּןa sonחָכָםwiseיְשַׂמַּח־אָבmakes a father gladוּכְסִילand a foolאָדָםmanבּוֹזֶהis despisingאִמּוֹ׃his mother

    A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.

21. 21

    אִוֶּלֶתfoolishnessשִׂמְחָהjoyלַחֲסַר־לֵבto him who lacks senseוְאִישׁand a manתְּבוּנָהunderstandingיְיַשֶּׁר־לָכֶת׃walks uprightly

    Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walketh uprightly.

22. 22

    הָפֵרare disappointedמַחֲשָׁבוֹתpurposesבְּאֵיןwithoutסוֹדcounselוּבְרֹבand in the multitude ofיוֹעֲצִיםcounselorsתָּקוּם׃they are established

    Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

23. 23

    שִׂמְחָהjoyלָאִישׁto the manבְּמַעֲנֵה־פִיוin the answer of his mouthוְדָבָרand wordבְּעִתּוֹin its timeמַה־טּוֹב׃what is good

    A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!

24. 24

    אֹרַחpathחַיִּיםlifeלְמַעְלָהupwardלְמַשְׂכִּילfor the wiseלְמַעַןin order thatסוּרdepartמִשְּׁאוֹלfrom Sheolמָטָּה׃beneath

    The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

25. 25

    בֵּיתthe house ofגֵּאִיםproud peopleיִסַּחtears downיְהֹוָהthe LORDוְיַצֵּבand he will establishגְּבוּלborder ofאַלְמָנָה׃a widow

    The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.

26. 26

    תּוֹעֲבַתan abomination beforeיְהֹוָהthe LORDמַחְשְׁבוֹתthe thoughts ofרָעevilוּטְהֹרִיםbut of the pureאִמְרֵי־נֹעַם׃are pleasant words

    The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

27. 27

    עֹכֵרhe who troublesבֵּיתוֹhis houseבּוֹצֵעַone who gains unjustlyבָּצַעunjust gainוְשׂוֹנֵאand one who hatesמַתָּנֹתgiftsיִחְיֶה׃he shall live

    He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.

28. 28

    לֵבheartצַדִּיקrighteousיֶהְגֶּהit will utterלַעֲנוֹתto answerוּפִיand the mouth ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menיַבִּיעַit pours forthרָעוֹת׃evils

    The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

29. 29

    רָחוֹקfarיְהֹוָהthe LORDמֵרְשָׁעִיםfrom wicked peopleוּתְפִלַּתand is the prayer ofצַדִּיקִיםthe righteousיִשְׁמָע׃He hears

    The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

30. 30

    מְאוֹר־עֵינַיִםthe light of the eyesיְשַׂמַּח־לֵבrejoices the heartשְׁמוּעָהa reportטוֹבָהgoodתְּדַשֶּׁן־עָצֶם׃it fattens the bones

    The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat.

31. 31

    אֹזֶןan earשֹׁמַעַתthat hearsתּוֹכַחַתrebukeחַיִּיםlifeבְּקֶרֶבamongחֲכָמִיםwiseתָּלִין׃it lodges

    The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.

32. 32

    פּוֹרֵעַone who ignoresמוּסָרdisciplineמוֹאֵסis rejectingנַפְשׁוֹhis soulוְשׁוֹמֵעַand one who heedsתּוֹכַחַתrebukeקוֹנֶהgetsלֵּב׃understanding

    He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

33. 33

    יִרְאַתthe fear ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDמוּסַרthe discipline ofחׇכְמָהwisdomוְלִפְנֵיand beforeכָבוֹדgloryעֲנָוָה׃humility

    The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.
