   And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother's brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,

   Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

   And his mother's brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

   And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.

   And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

   וַיֵּאָסְפוּvay/ye/a/se/FUand gathered togetherכׇּל־בַּעֲלֵיkol-ba/a/LEall the men ofשְׁכֶםShe/KHEMShechemוְכׇל־בֵּיתve/KHOL-betand all the house ofמִלּוֹאMil/LOMilloוַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand they wentוַיַּמְלִיכוּvay/yam/LI/khuand made kingאֶת־אֲבִימֶלֶךְet-A/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechלְמֶלֶךְle/ME/lekhkingעִם־אֵלוֹןim-e/LONby the oak ofמֻצָּבmuts/TSAVthe pillarאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasבִּשְׁכֶם׃Bish/KHEMat Shechem

   And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

   וַיַּגִּדוּvay/yag/GI/duand they toldלְיוֹתָםle/Yo/TAMto Jothamוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand he wentוַיַּעֲמֹדvay/ya/a/MODand stoodבְּרֹאשׁbe/ROSHon the top ofהַר־גְּרִזִיםHar-ge/ri/ZIMMount Gerizimוַיִּשָּׂאvay/yis/SAand lifted upקוֹלוֹko/LOhis voiceוַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand calledוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלָהֶםla/HEMto themשִׁמְעוּshim/Uhearkenאֵלַיe/LAYto meבַּעֲלֵיba/a/LEO men ofשְׁכֶםShe/KHEMShechemוְיִשְׁמַעve/yish/MAthat may hearkenאֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMto youאֱלֹהִים׃e/lo/HIMGod

   And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

   The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלָהֶםla/HEMto themהַזַּיִתhaz/ZA/yitthe olive treeהֶחֳדַלְתִּיhe/cho/DAL/tishould I leaveאֶת־דִּשְׁנִיet-dish/NImy fatnessאֲשֶׁר־בִּיa/SHER-biwhich by meיְכַבְּדוּye/khab/be/DUthey honorאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodוַאֲנָשִׁיםva/a/na/SHIMand menוְהָלַכְתִּיve/ha/lakh/TIand goלָנוּעַla/NU/ato swayעַל־הָעֵצִים׃al-ha/e/TSIMover the trees

   But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidהָעֵצִיםha/e/TSIMthe treesלַתְּאֵנָהlat/te/e/NAto the fig treeלְכִי־אַתְּle/KHI-attcome youמׇלְכִיmol/KHIreignעָלֵינוּ׃a/LE/nuover us

    And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.

    וַתֹּאמֶרvat/TO/merand saidלָהֶםla/HEMto themהַתְּאֵנָהhat/te/e/NAthe fig treeהֶחֳדַלְתִּיhe/cho/DAL/tishould I leaveאֶת־מׇתְקִיet-mot/KImy sweetnessוְאֶת־תְּנוּבָתִיve/ET-te/nu/va/TIand my fruitהַטּוֹבָהhat/to/VAthe goodוְהָלַכְתִּיve/ha/lakh/TIand goלָנוּעַla/NU/ato swayעַל־הָעֵצִים׃al-ha/e/TSIMover the trees

    But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidהָעֵצִיםha/e/TSIMthe treesלַגָּפֶןlag/GA/fento the vineלְכִי־אַתְּle/KHI-attcome you[מׇלְכִי]mol/KHIreignעָלֵינוּ׃a/LE/nuover us

    Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

    וַתֹּאמֶרvat/TO/merand saidלָהֶםla/HEMto themהַגֶּפֶןhag/GE/fenthe vineהֶחֳדַלְתִּיhe/cho/DAL/tishould I leaveאֶת־תִּירוֹשִׁיet-ti/ro/SHImy new wineהַמְשַׂמֵּחַham/sam/ME/achwhich cheersאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodוַאֲנָשִׁיםva/a/na/SHIMand menוְהָלַכְתִּיve/ha/lakh/TIand goלָנוּעַla/NU/ato swayעַל־הָעֵצִים׃al-ha/e/TSIMover the trees

    And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

    וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidכׇל־הָעֵצִיםkhol-ha/e/TSIMall the treesאֶל־הָאָטָדel-ha/a/TADto the brambleלֵךְlekhcomeאַתָּהat/TAyouמְלׇךְ־עָלֵינוּ׃me/LOKH-a/LE/nureign over us

    Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהָאָטָדha/a/TADthe brambleאֶל־הָעֵצִיםel-ha/e/TSIMto the treesאִםimifבֶּאֱמֶתbe/e/METin truthאַתֶּםat/TEMyouמֹשְׁחִיםmosh/CHIManointאֹתִיo/TImeלְמֶלֶךְle/ME/lekhfor kingעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMover youבֹּאוּBO/ucomeחֲסוּcha/SUtake refugeבְצִלִּיve/tsil/LIin my shadeוְאִם־אַיִןve/IM-A/yinand if notתֵּצֵאte/TSEshall go forthאֵשׁeshfireמִן־הָאָטָדmin-ha/a/TADfrom the brambleוְתֹאכַלve/to/KHALand consumeאֶת־אַרְזֵיet-ar/ZEthe cedars ofהַלְּבָנוֹן׃Hal/le/va/NONLebanon

    And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאִם־בֶּאֱמֶתim-be/e/METif in truthוּבְתָמִיםu/ve/ta/MIMand in integrityעֲשִׂיתֶםa/si/TEMyou have doneוַתַּמְלִיכוּvat/tam/LI/khuin that you have made kingאֶת־אֲבִימֶלֶךְet-A/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechוְאִם־טוֹבָהve/IM-to/VAand if wellעֲשִׂיתֶםa/si/TEMyou have dealtעִם־יְרֻבַּעַלim-Ye/rub/BA/alwith Jerubbaalוְעִם־בֵּיתוֹve/IM-be/TOand with his houseוְאִם־כִּגְמוּלve/IM-kig/MULand if according to the dealing ofיָדָיוya/DAYVhis handsעֲשִׂיתֶםa/si/TEMyou have doneלוֹ׃loto him

    Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;

    אֲשֶׁר־נִלְחַםa/SHER-nil/CHAMfor foughtאָבִיa/VImy fatherעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMfor youוַיַּשְׁלֵךְvay/yash/LEKHand he castאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹet-naf/SHOhis lifeמִנֶּגֶדmin/NE/gedawayוַיַּצֵּלvay/yats/TSELand he deliveredאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouמִיַּדmiy/YADfrom the hand ofמִדְיָן׃Mid/YANMidian

    (For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

18. 18

    וְאַתֶּםve/at/TEMand youקַמְתֶּםkam/TEMhave risen upעַל־בֵּיתal-betagainst the house ofאָבִיa/VImy fatherהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthis dayוַתַּהַרְגוּvat/ta/har/GUand have slainאֶת־בָּנָיוet-ba/NAYVhis sonsשִׁבְעִיםshiv/IMseventyאִישׁishmenעַל־אֶבֶןal-E/venupon a stoneאֶחָתe/CHAToneוַתַּמְלִיכוּvat/tam/LI/khuand you have made kingאֶת־אֲבִימֶלֶךְet-A/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechבֶּן־אֲמָתוֹben-a/ma/TOthe son of his maidservantעַל־בַּעֲלֵיal-ba/a/LEover the men ofשְׁכֶםShe/KHEMShechemכִּיkibecauseאֲחִיכֶםa/chi/KHEMyour brotherהוּא׃huhe is

    And ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)

    וְאִם־בֶּאֱמֶתve/IM-be/e/METand if in truthוּבְתָמִיםu/ve/ta/MIMand in integrityעֲשִׂיתֶםa/si/TEMyou have doneעִם־יְרֻבַּעַלim-Ye/rub/BA/alwith Jerubbaalוְעִם־בֵּיתוֹve/IM-be/TOand with his houseהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisשִׂמְחוּsim/CHUrejoiceבַּאֲבִימֶלֶךְba/A/vi/ME/lekhin Abimelechוְיִשְׂמַחve/yis/MACHand let rejoiceגַּם־הוּאgam-huhe alsoבָּכֶם׃ba/KHEMin you

    If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

    וְאִם־אַיִןve/IM-A/yinand if notתֵּצֵאte/TSEshall go forthאֵשׁeshfireמֵאֲבִימֶלֶךְme/A/vi/ME/lekhfrom Abimelechוְתֹאכַלve/to/KHALand consumeאֶת־בַּעֲלֵיet-ba/a/LEthe men ofשְׁכֶםShe/KHEMShechemוְאֶת־בֵּיתve/ET-betand the house ofמִלּוֹאMil/LOMilloוְתֵצֵאve/te/TSEand let come outאֵשׁeshfireמִבַּעֲלֵיmib/ba/a/LEfrom the men ofשְׁכֶםShe/KHEMShechemוּמִבֵּיתu/mib/BETand from the house ofמִלּוֹאMil/LOMilloוְתֹאכַלve/to/KHALand consumeאֶת־אֲבִימֶלֶךְ׃et-A/vi/ME/lekhAbimelech

    But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

    וַיָּנׇסvay/YA/nosand fledיוֹתָםYo/TAMJothamוַיִּבְרַחvay/yiv/RACHand escapedוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentבְּאֵרָהbe/E/rato Beerוַיֵּשֶׁבvay/YE/shevand dweltשָׁםshamthereמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbecause ofאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechאָחִיו׃a/CHIVhis brother

    And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

    וַיָּשַׂרvay/YA/sarand ruledאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechעַל־יִשְׂרָאֵלal-Yis/ra/ELover Israelשָׁלֹשׁsha/LOSHthreeשָׁנִים׃sha/NIMyears

    When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodרוּחַRU/acha spirit ofרָעָהra/AevilבֵּיןbenbetweenאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechוּבֵיןu/VENand betweenבַּעֲלֵיba/a/LEthe men ofשְׁכֶםShe/KHEMShechemוַיִּבְגְּדוּvay/yiv/ge/DUand dealt treacherouslyבַעֲלֵי־שְׁכֶםva/a/LE-She/KHEMthe men of Shechemבַּאֲבִימֶלֶךְ׃ba/A/vi/ME/lekhwith Abimelech

    Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

    לָבוֹאla/VOthat might comeחֲמַסcha/MASthe violence ofשִׁבְעִיםshiv/IMseventyבְּנֵי־יְרֻבָּעַלbe/NE-ye/rub/BA/althe sons of Jerubbaalוְדָמָםve/da/MAMand their bloodלָשׂוּםla/SUMand be laidעַל־אֲבִימֶלֶךְal-A/vi/ME/lekhupon Abimelechאֲחִיהֶםa/chi/HEMtheir brotherאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהָרַגha/RAGslewאוֹתָםo/TAMthemוְעַלve/ALand uponבַּעֲלֵיba/a/LEthe men ofשְׁכֶםShe/KHEMShechemאֲשֶׁר־חִזְּקוּa/SHER-chiz/ze/KUwho strengthenedאֶת־יָדָיוet-ya/DAYVhis handsלַהֲרֹגla/ha/ROGto slayאֶת־אֶחָיו׃et-e/CHAYVhis brothers

    That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

    וַיָּשִׂימוּvay/ya/SI/muand setלוֹloagainst himבַעֲלֵיva/a/LEthe men ofשְׁכֶםShe/KHEMShechemמְאָרְבִיםme/a/re/VIMliers in waitעַלalonרָאשֵׁיra/SHEthe tops ofהֶהָרִיםhe/ha/RIMthe mountainsוַיִּגְזְלוּvay/yig/ze/LUand they robbedאֵת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲבֹרet-kol-a/SHER-ya/a/VORall who passed byעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMby themבַּדָּרֶךְbad/DA/rekhalong the wayוַיֻּגַּדvay/yug/GADand it was toldלַאֲבִימֶלֶךְ׃la/A/vi/ME/lekhto Abimelech

    And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameגַּעַלGA/alGaalבֶּן־עֶבֶדben-E/vedthe son of Ebedוְאֶחָיוve/e/CHAYVand his brethrenוַיַּעַבְרוּvay/ya/av/RUand went overבִּשְׁכֶםBish/KHEMinto Shechemוַיִּבְטְחוּ־בוֹvay/yiv/te/CHU-voand put their confidence in himבַּעֲלֵיba/a/LEthe men ofשְׁכֶם׃She/KHEMShechem

    And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.

    וַיֵּצְאוּvay/yets/Uand they went outהַשָּׂדֶהhas/sa/DEinto the fieldוַיִּבְצְרוּvay/yiv/tse/RUand gatheredאֶת־כַּרְמֵיהֶםet-kar/me/HEMtheir vineyardsוַיִּדְרְכוּvay/yid/re/KHUand trodוַיַּעֲשׂוּvay/ya/a/SUand heldהִלּוּלִיםhil/lu/LIMa praise festivalוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand went intoבֵּיתbetthe house ofאֱלֹהֵיהֶםe/lo/he/HEMtheir godוַיֹּאכְלוּvay/yo/khe/LUand ateוַיִּשְׁתּוּvay/yish/TUand drankוַיְקַלְלוּvay/kal/LUand cursedאֶת־אֲבִימֶלֶךְ׃et-A/vi/ME/lekhAbimelech

    And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

    And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

    And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

30. 30

    וַיִּשְׁמַעvay/yish/MAand heardזְבֻלZe/VULZebulשַׂר־הָעִירsar-ha/IRthe ruler of the cityאֶת־דִּבְרֵיet-div/REthe words ofגַּעַלGA/alGaalבֶּן־עָבֶדben-A/vedthe son of Ebedוַיִּחַרvay/YI/charand was kindledאַפּוֹ׃ap/POhis anger

    And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

31. 31

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentמַלְאָכִיםmal/a/KHIMmessengersאֶל־אֲבִימֶלֶךְel-A/vi/ME/lekhto Abimelechבְּתׇרְמָהbe/tor/MAcraftilyלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdגַעַלGA/alGaalבֶּן־עֶבֶדben-E/vedthe son of Ebedוְאֶחָיוve/e/CHAYVand his brethrenבָּאִיםba/IMhave comeשְׁכֶמָהShe/KHE/mato Shechemוְהִנָּםve/hin/NAMand behold theyצָרִיםtsa/RIMare stirring upאֶת־הָעִירet-ha/IRthe cityעָלֶיךָ׃a/LE/khaagainst you

    And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.

32. 32

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowקוּםkumariseלַיְלָהLAY/laby nightאַתָּהat/TAyouוְהָעָםve/ha/AMand the peopleאֲשֶׁר־אִתָּךְa/SHER-it/TAKHwho are with youוֶאֱרֹבve/e/ROVand lie in waitבַּשָּׂדֶה׃bas/sa/DEin the field

    Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

33. 33

    וְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it shall beבַבֹּקֶרvab/BO/kerin the morningכִּזְרֹחַkiz/RO/achas soon as risesהַשֶּׁמֶשׁhash/SHE/meshthe sunתַּשְׁכִּיםtash/KIMyou shall rise earlyוּפָשַׁטְתָּu/fa/shat/TAand rushעַל־הָעִירal-ha/IRupon the cityוְהִנֵּה־הוּאve/hin/NE-huand there heוְהָעָםve/ha/AMand the peopleאֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹa/SHER-it/TOwho are with himיֹצְאִיםyots/IMcome outאֵלֶיךָe/LE/khaagainst youוְעָשִׂיתָve/a/SI/tathen you may doלּוֹloto himכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasתִּמְצָאtim/TSAshall findיָדֶךָ׃ya/DE/khayour hand

    And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

34. 34

    וַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand aroseאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechוְכׇל־הָעָםve/KHOL-ha/AMand all the peopleאֲשֶׁר־עִמּוֹa/SHER-im/MOwho were with himלָיְלָהLAY/laby nightוַיֶּאֶרְבוּvay/ye/er/VUand lay in waitעַל־שְׁכֶםal-She/KHEMagainst Shechemאַרְבָּעָהar/ba/Afourרָאשִׁים׃ra/SHIMcompanies

    And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

35. 35

    וַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outגַּעַלGA/alGaalבֶּן־עֶבֶדben-E/vedthe son of Ebedוַיַּעֲמֹדvay/ya/a/MODand stoodפֶּתַחPE/tachin the entrance ofשַׁעַרSHA/arthe gate ofהָעִירha/IRthe cityוַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand aroseאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechוְהָעָםve/ha/AMand the peopleאֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹa/SHER-it/TOwho were with himמִן־הַמַּאְרָב׃min-ham/ma/RAVfrom the ambush

    And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.

36. 36

    וַיַּרְא־גַּעַלvay/YAR-GA/aland Gaal sawאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֶל־זְבֻלel-Ze/VULto Zebulהִנֵּה־עָםhin/NE-ambehold a peopleיוֹרֵדyo/REDcoming downמֵרָאשֵׁיme/ra/SHEfrom the tops ofהֶהָרִיםhe/ha/RIMthe mountainsוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himזְבֻלZe/VULZebulאֵת־צֵלet-tselthe shadow ofהֶהָרִיםhe/ha/RIMthe mountainsאַתָּהat/TAyouרֹאֶהro/Eseeכָּאֲנָשִׁים׃ka/a/na/SHIMlike men

    And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

37. 37

    וַיֹּסֶףvay/YO/sefand againעוֹדodstillגַּעַלGA/alGaalלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERto speakוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהִנֵּה־עָםhin/NE-ambehold a peopleיוֹרְדִיםyor/DIMare coming downמֵעִםme/IMfromטַבּוּרtab/BURthe navel ofהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe landוְרֹאשׁ־אֶחָדve/ROSH-e/CHADand one companyבָּאbacomesמִדֶּרֶךְmid/DE/rekhby the way ofאֵלוֹןe/LONthe oak ofמְעוֹנְנִים׃Me/on/NIMMeonenim

    And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.

38. 38

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himזְבֻלZe/VULZebulאַיֵּהay/YEwhere isאֵפוֹאe/FOnowפִיךָFI/khayour mouthאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwith whichתֹּאמַרto/MARyou saidמִיmiwho isאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechכִּיkithatנַעַבְדֶנּוּna/av/DEN/nuwe should serve himהֲלֹאha/LOis notזֶהzethisהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatמָאַסְתָּהma/AS/tayou despisedבּוֹbothemצֵא־נָאtse-nago out I prayעַתָּהat/TAnowוְהִלָּחֶםve/hil/LA/chemand fightבּוֹ׃bowith them

    Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.

39. 39

    וַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outגַעַלGA/alGaalלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeבַּעֲלֵיba/a/LEthe men ofשְׁכֶםShe/KHEMShechemוַיִּלָּחֶםvay/yil/LA/chemand foughtבַּאֲבִימֶלֶךְ׃ba/A/vi/ME/lekhwith Abimelech

    And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

40. 40

    וַיִּרְדְּפֵהוּvay/yir/de/FE/huand chased himאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechוַיָּנׇסvay/YA/nosand he fledמִפָּנָיוmip/pa/NAYVbefore himוַיִּפְּלוּvay/yip/pe/LUand fellחֲלָלִיםcha/la/LIMslainרַבִּיםrab/BIMmanyעַד־פֶּתַחad-PE/tachto the entrance ofהַשָּׁעַר׃hash/SHA/arthe gate

    And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.

41. 41

    וַיֵּשֶׁבvay/YE/shevand dweltאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechבָּארוּמָהba/Ru/MAat Arumahוַיְגָרֶשׁvay/GA/reshand drove outזְבֻלZe/VULZebulאֶת־גַּעַלet-GA/alGaalוְאֶת־אֶחָיוve/ET-e/CHAYVand his brethrenמִשֶּׁבֶתmish/SHE/vetfrom dwellingבִּשְׁכֶם׃Bish/KHEMat Shechem

    And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

42. 42

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passמִמׇּחֳרָתmim/mo/cho/RATon the next dayוַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outהָעָםha/AMthe peopleהַשָּׂדֶהhas/sa/DEinto the fieldוַיַּגִּדוּvay/yag/GI/duand they toldלַאֲבִימֶלֶךְ׃la/A/vi/ME/lekhto Abimelech

    And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

43. 43

    וַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleוַיֶּחֱצֵםvay/ye/che/TSEMand divided themלִשְׁלֹשָׁהlish/lo/SHAinto threeרָאשִׁיםra/SHIMcompaniesוַיֶּאֱרֹבvay/ye/e/ROVand lay in waitבַּשָּׂדֶהbas/sa/DEin the fieldוַיַּרְאvay/YARand sawוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdהָעָםha/AMthe peopleיֹצֵאyo/TSEwas coming outמִן־הָעִירmin-ha/IRfrom the cityוַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand he rose upעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMagainst themוַיַּכֵּם׃vay/yak/KEMand struck them

    And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.

44. 44

    וַאֲבִימֶלֶךְva/A/vi/ME/lekhand Abimelechוְהָרָאשִׁיםve/ha/ra/SHIMand the companiesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wereעִמּוֹim/MOwith himפָּשְׁטוּpa/she/TUrushedוַיַּעַמְדוּvay/ya/am/DUand stoodפֶּתַחPE/tachin the entrance ofשַׁעַרSHA/arthe gate ofהָעִירha/IRthe cityוּשְׁנֵיu/she/NEand the twoהָרָאשִׁיםha/ra/SHIMthe companiesפָּשְׁטוּpa/she/TUrushedעַל־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרal-kol-a/SHERupon all who wereבַּשָּׂדֶהbas/sa/DEin the fieldוַיַּכּוּם׃vay/yak/KUMand struck them

    And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.

45. 45

    וַאֲבִימֶלֶךְva/A/vi/ME/lekhand Abimelechנִלְחָםnil/CHAMfoughtבָּעִירba/IRagainst the cityכֹּלkolallהַיּוֹםhay/YOMthe dayהַהוּאha/HUthatוַיִּלְכֹּדvay/yil/KODand tookאֶת־הָעִירet-ha/IRthe cityוְאֶת־הָעָםve/ET-ha/AMand the peopleאֲשֶׁר־בָּהּa/SHER-bathat was in itהָרָגha/RAGhe slewוַיִּתֹּץvay/yit/TOTSand he broke downאֶת־הָעִירet-ha/IRthe cityוַיִּזְרָעֶהָvay/yiz/ra/E/haand sowed it withמֶלַח׃ME/lachsalt

    And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46. 46

    וַיִּשְׁמְעוּvay/yish/me/Uand heardכׇּל־בַּעֲלֵיkol-ba/a/LEall the men ofמִגְדַּל־שְׁכֶםmiG/DAL-she/KHEMthe tower of Shechemוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they enteredאֶל־צְרִיחַel-tse/RI/achinto the stronghold ofבֵּיתbetthe house ofאֵלElEl-בְּרִית׃be/RITberith

    And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.

47. 47

    וַיֻּגַּדvay/yug/GADand it was toldלַאֲבִימֶלֶךְla/A/vi/ME/lekhto Abimelechכִּיkithatהִתְקַבְּצוּhit/kab/be/TSUwere gathered togetherכׇּל־בַּעֲלֵיkol-ba/a/LEall the men ofמִגְדַּל־שְׁכֶם׃miG/DAL-she/KHEMthe tower of Shechem

    And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

48. 48

    וַיַּעַלvay/YA/aland went upאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechהַר־צַלְמוֹןhaR-tsal/MONto Mount Zalmonהוּאhuheוְכׇל־הָעָםve/KHOL-ha/AMand all the peopleאֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹa/SHER-it/TOwho were with himוַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechאֶת־הַקַּרְדֻּמּוֹתet-hak/kar/dum/MOTthe axesבְּיָדוֹbe/ya/DOin his handוַיִּכְרֹתvay/yikh/ROTand cut downשׂוֹכַתso/KHATa branch ofעֵצִיםe/TSIMtreesוַיִּשָּׂאֶהָvay/yis/sa/E/haand took it upוַיָּשֶׂםvay/YA/semand laid itעַל־שִׁכְמוֹal-shikh/MOon his shoulderוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֶל־הָעָםel-ha/AMto the peopleאֲשֶׁר־עִמּוֹa/SHER-im/MOwho were with himמָהmawhatרְאִיתֶםre/i/TEMyou have seenעָשִׂיתִיa/SI/time doמַהֲרוּma/ha/RUmake hasteעֲשׂוּa/SUdoכָמוֹנִי׃kha/MO/nias I have

    And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

49. 49

    וַיִּכְרְתוּvay/yikh/re/TUand they cut downגַם־כׇּל־הָעָםgam-kol-ha/AMall the people alsoאִישׁishevery manשׂוֹכֹהso/KHOhis boughוַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand they wentאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechוַיָּשִׂימוּvay/ya/SI/muand put themעַל־הַצְּרִיחַal-hats/tse/RI/achagainst the strongholdוַיַּצִּיתוּvay/yats/TSI/tuand they set on fireעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMover themאֶת־הַצְּרִיחַet-hats/tse/RI/achthe strongholdבָּאֵשׁba/ESHwith fireוַיָּמֻתוּvay/ya/MU/tuso diedגַּםgamalsoכׇּל־אַנְשֵׁיkol-an/SHEall the men ofמִגְדַּל־שְׁכֶםmiG/DAL-she/KHEMthe tower of Shechemכְּאֶלֶףke/E/lefabout a thousandאִישׁishmenוְאִשָּׁה׃ve/ish/SHAand women

    And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

50. 50

    וַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechאֶל־תֵּבֵץel-Te/VETSto Thebezוַיִּחַןvay/YI/chanand encampedבְּתֵבֵץbe/Te/VETSat Thebezוַיִּלְכְּדָהּ׃vay/yil/ke/DAand took it

    Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

51. 51

    וּמִגְדַּל־עֹזu/mig/DAL-ozbut a strong towerהָיָהha/YAthere wasבְתוֹךְ־הָעִירve/TOKH-ha/IRwithin the cityוַיָּנֻסוּvay/ya/NU/suand fledשָׁמָּהSHAM/mato itכׇּל־הָאֲנָשִׁיםkol-ha/a/na/SHIMall the menוְהַנָּשִׁיםve/han/na/SHIMand the womenוְכֹלve/KHOLand allבַּעֲלֵיba/a/LEthe men ofהָעִירha/IRthe cityוַיִּסְגְּרוּvay/yis/ge/RUand shut itבַּעֲדָםba/a/DAMbehind themוַיַּעֲלוּvay/ya/a/LUand went upעַל־גַּגal-gagto the roof ofהַמִּגְדָּל׃ham/mig/DALthe tower

    But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.

52. 52

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechעַד־הַמִּגְדָּלad-ham/mig/DALto the towerוַיִּלָּחֶםvay/yil/LA/chemand foughtבּוֹboagainst itוַיִּגַּשׁvay/yig/GASHand went nearעַד־פֶּתַחad-PE/tachto the door ofהַמִּגְדָּלham/mig/DALthe towerלְשׇׂרְפוֹle/sor/FOto burn itבָאֵשׁ׃va/ESHwith fire

    And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

53. 53

    וַתַּשְׁלֵךְvat/tash/LEKHand castאִשָּׁהish/SHAa womanאַחַתa/CHATcertainפֶּלַחPE/lacha piece ofרֶכֶבRE/khevan upper millstoneעַל־רֹאשׁal-roshupon the head ofאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechוַתָּרִץvat/TA/ritsand crushedאֶת־גֻּלְגׇּלְתּוֹ׃et-gul/gol/TOhis skull

    And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to brake his skull.

54. 54

    וַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand he calledמְהֵרָהme/he/RAquicklyאֶל־הַנַּעַרel-han/NA/arto the young manנֹשֵׂאno/SEwho boreכֵלָיוkhe/LAYVhis armorוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלוֹloto himשְׁלֹףshe/LOFdrawחַרְבְּךָchar/be/KHAyour swordוּמוֹתְתֵנִיu/mot/TE/niand kill meפֶּן־יֹאמְרוּpen-YO/me/rulest they sayלִיliof meאִשָּׁהish/SHAa womanהֲרָגָתְהוּha/ra/GAT/hukilled himוַיִּדְקְרֵהוּvay/yid/ke/RE/huand thrust him throughנַעֲרוֹna/a/ROhis young manוַיָּמֹת׃vay/ya/MOTand he died

    Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

55. 55

    וַיִּרְאוּvay/yir/Uand sawאִישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלish-Yis/ra/ELthe men of Israelכִּיkithatמֵתmetwas deadאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechוַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUthey departedאִישׁishevery manלִמְקֹמוֹ׃lim/ko/MOto his place

    And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

56. 56

    וַיָּשֶׁבvay/YA/shevand requitedאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodאֵת־רָעַתet-ra/ATthe evil ofאֲבִימֶלֶךְA/vi/ME/lekhAbimelechאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעָשָׂהa/SAhe didלְאָבִיוle/a/VIVto his fatherלַהֲרֹגla/ha/ROGin slayingאֶת־שִׁבְעִיםet-shiv/IMseventyאֶחָיו׃e/CHAYVhis brothers

    Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:

57. 57

    וְאֵתve/ETandכׇּל־רָעַתkol-ra/ATall the evil ofאַנְשֵׁיan/SHEthe men ofשְׁכֶםShe/KHEMShechemהֵשִׁיבhe/SHIVrequitedאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodבְּרֹאשָׁםbe/ro/SHAMupon their headsוַתָּבֹאvat/ta/VOand cameאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themקִלְלַתkil/LATthe curse ofיוֹתָםYo/TAMJothamבֶּן־יְרֻבָּעַל׃ben-Ye/rub/BA/althe son of Jerubbaal

    And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
