   וַיַּעַלand he ascendedאַבְרָםAbramמִמִּצְרַיִםout of Egyptהוּאheוְאִשְׁתּוֹand his wifeוְכׇל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹand all that he hadוְלוֹטand Lotעִמּוֹwith himהַנֶּגְבָּה׃toward the Negev

   And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.

2. 2

   וְאַבְרָםand Abramכָּבֵדheavyמְאֹדexceedinglyבַּמִּקְנֶהin the livestockבַּכֶּסֶףin the silverוּבַזָּהָב׃and in the gold

   And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

   וַיֵּלֶךְand wentלְמַסָּעָיוto his journeyingsמִנֶּגֶבfrom southוְעַד־בֵּית־אֵלand unto Beth-elעַד־הַמָּקוֹםuntil the placeאֲשֶׁר־הָיָהwhere had beenשָׁםthereאׇהֳלֹהhis tentבַּתְּחִלָּהat the firstבֵּיןbetweenבֵּית־אֵלBeth-elוּבֵיןand betweenהָעָי׃Ai

   And he went on his journeys from the south even to Beth-el, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Beth-el and Hai;

   אֶל־מְקוֹםto place ofהַמִּזְבֵּחַthe altarאֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂהwhich didשָׁםthereבָּרִאשֹׁנָהat the former timeוַיִּקְרָאand calledשָׁםthereאַבְרָםAbramבְּשֵׁםin the name ofיְהֹוָה׃the LORD

   Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

   וְגַם־לְלוֹטand also to Lotהַהֹלֵךְwho went withאֶת־אַבְרָםAbramהָיָהwasצֹאן־וּבָקָרflocks and herdsוְאֹהָלִים׃and tents

   And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

   וְלֹא־נָשָׂאand not boreאֹתָםthemהָאָרֶץthe landלָשֶׁבֶתto dwellיַחְדָּוtogetherכִּי־הָיָהbecause wasרְכוּשָׁםtheir possessionsרָבmuchוְלֹאand notיָכְלוּcould theyלָשֶׁבֶתto dwellיַחְדָּו׃together

   And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.

   וַיְהִי־רִיבand it came to pass contentionבֵּיןbetweenרֹעֵיpastors ofמִקְנֵה־אַבְרָםthe livestock of Abramוּבֵיןand betweenרֹעֵיpastors ofמִקְנֵה־לוֹטthe livestock of Lotוְהַכְּנַעֲנִיand the Canaaniteוְהַפְּרִזִּיand the Perizziteאָזthenיֹשֵׁבdweltבָּאָרֶץ׃in the land

   And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

8. 8

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאַבְרָםAbramאֶל־לוֹטto Lotאַל־נָאdo not I prayתְהִיthere beמְרִיבָהMeribahבֵּינִיbetween meוּבֵינֶךָand between youוּבֵיןand betweenרֹעַיmy herdsmenוּבֵיןand betweenרֹעֶיךָyour herdsmenכִּי־אֲנָשִׁיםbecause menאַחִיםbrothersאֲנָחְנוּ׃we

   And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

9. 9

   הֲלֹאis it notכׇל־הָאָרֶץthe whole landלְפָנֶיךָbefore youהִפָּרֶדseparateנָאI prayמֵעָלָיfrom meאִם־הַשְּׂמֹאלif the leftוְאֵימִנָהso let me go rightוְאִם־הַיָּמִיןand if the rightוְאַשְׂמְאִילָה׃and I will go left

   Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

    וַיִּשָּׂא־לוֹטand he cast Lotאֶת־עֵינָיוhis eyesוַיַּרְאand sawאֶת־כׇּל־כִּכַּרall the valley ofהַיַּרְדֵּןthe Jordanכִּיthatכֻלָּהּall of itמַשְׁקֶהwas well wateredלִפְנֵיbeforeשַׁחֵתdestroyedיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֶת־סְדֹםSodomוְאֶת־עֲמֹרָהand Gomorrahכְּגַן־יְהֹוָהlike the garden of the LORDכְּאֶרֶץlike the land ofמִצְרַיִםEgyptבֹּאֲכָהas you go toצֹעַר׃Zoar

    And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

    וַיִּבְחַר־לוֹand chose himלוֹטLotאֵת־כׇּל־כִּכַּרall the valley ofהַיַּרְדֵּןthe Jordanוַיִּסַּעand he journeyedלוֹטLotמִקֶּדֶםeastwardוַיִּפָּרְדוּand they separatedאִישׁeachמֵעַלfromאָחִיו׃his brother

    Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

12. 12

    אַבְרָםAbramיָשַׁבdweltבְּאֶרֶץ־כְּנָעַןin the land of Canaanוְלוֹטand Lotיָשַׁבdweltבְּעָרֵיin the cities ofהַכִּכָּרthe plainוַיֶּאֱהַלand he moved tentעַד־סְדֹם׃until Sodom

    Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

13. 13

    וְאַנְשֵׁיand the men ofסְדֹםSodomרָעִיםevilוְחַטָּאִיםand sinfulלַיהֹוָהagainst the LORDמְאֹד׃exceedingly

    But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

14. 14

    וַיהֹוָהand the LORDאָמַרsaidאֶל־אַבְרָםto Abramאַחֲרֵיafterהִפָּרֶד־לוֹטseparate Lotמֵעִמּוֹfrom with himשָׂאlift upנָאI prayעֵינֶיךָyour eyesוּרְאֵהand beholdמִן־הַמָּקוֹםfrom the placeאֲשֶׁר־אַתָּהwhere you areשָׁםthereצָפֹנָהnorthwardוָנֶגְבָּהand southwardוָקֵדְמָהand eastwardוָיָמָּה׃and westward

    And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:

15. 15

    כִּיbecauseאֶת־כׇּל־הָאָרֶץall the landאֲשֶׁר־אַתָּהwhich youרֹאֶהseeלְךָfor youאֶתְּנֶנָּהshall I give itוּלְזַרְעֲךָand to your offspringעַד־עוֹלָם׃forever

    For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

16. 16

    וְשַׂמְתִּיand I makeאֶת־זַרְעֲךָyour seedכַּעֲפַרas the dust ofהָאָרֶץthe earthאֲשֶׁרwhichאִם־יוּכַלif canאִישׁa manלִמְנוֹתto countאֶת־עֲפַרthe dust ofהָאָרֶץthe earthגַּם־זַרְעֲךָalso your seedיִמָּנֶה׃he shall be counted

    And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

17. 17

    קוּםariseהִתְהַלֵּךְwalk aboutבָּאָרֶץin the landלְאׇרְכָּהּthrough its lengthוּלְרׇחְבָּהּand its breadthכִּיforלְךָfor youאֶתְּנֶנָּה׃shall I give it

    Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.

18. 18

    וַיֶּאֱהַלand he moved tentאַבְרָםAbramוַיָּבֹאand cameוַיֵּשֶׁבand he dweltבְּאֵלֹנֵיat the great trees ofמַמְרֵאMamreאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּחֶבְרוֹןin Hebronוַיִּבֶן־שָׁםand he built thereמִזְבֵּחַan altarלַיהֹוָה׃to the LORD

    Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.
