Genesis 11 בְּרֵאשִׁית פרק י״א

1. 1

   וַיְהִיand hadכׇל־הָאָרֶץall the earthשָׂפָהlanguageאֶחָתoneוּדְבָרִיםand speechאֲחָדִים׃one

   And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

2. 2

   וַיְהִיand it came to passבְּנׇסְעָםas they journeyedמִקֶּדֶםfrom the eastוַיִּמְצְאוּthat they foundבִקְעָהa plainבְּאֶרֶץin the land ofשִׁנְעָרShinarוַיֵּשְׁבוּand they dweltשָׁם׃there

   And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

3. 3

   וַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidאִישׁto oneאֶל־רֵעֵהוּunto his neighborהָבָהcomeנִלְבְּנָהlet us makeלְבֵנִיםbrickוְנִשְׂרְפָהand burn themלִשְׂרֵפָהthoroughlyוַתְּהִיand they usedלָהֶםto themהַלְּבֵנָהbrickלְאָבֶןfor stoneוְהַחֵמָרand tarהָיָהthey usedלָהֶםto themלַחֹמֶר׃for mortar

   And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidהָבָהcomeנִבְנֶה־לָּנוּlet us build ourselvesעִירa cityוּמִגְדָּלand a towerוְרֹאשׁוֹand its topבַשָּׁמַיִםin the heavensוְנַעֲשֶׂה־לָּנוּand let us make for ourselvesשֵׁםa nameפֶּן־נָפוּץlest we be scattered abroadעַל־פְּנֵיover the face ofכׇל־הָאָרֶץ׃all the earth

   And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

5. 5

   וַיֵּרֶדand came downיְהֹוָהthe LORDלִרְאֹתto seeאֶת־הָעִירthe cityוְאֶת־הַמִּגְדָּלand the towerאֲשֶׁרwhichבָּנוּhad builtבְּנֵיthe sons ofהָאָדָם׃men

   And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

6. 6

   וַיֹּאמֶרand saidיְהֹוָהthe LORDהֵןbeholdעַםthe people areאֶחָדoneוְשָׂפָהand languageאַחַתoneלְכֻלָּםthey all haveוְזֶהand thisהַחִלָּםthey have begunלַעֲשׂוֹתto doוְעַתָּהand nowלֹא־יִבָּצֵרnothing will be withheldמֵהֶםfrom themכֹּלof allאֲשֶׁרthatיָזְמוּthey deviseלַעֲשׂוֹת׃to do

   And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

7. 7

   הָבָהcomeנֵרְדָהlet Us go downוְנָבְלָהand confuseשָׁםthereשְׂפָתָםtheir languageאֲשֶׁרthatלֹאnotיִשְׁמְעוּmay understandאִישׁone manשְׂפַתthe speech ofרֵעֵהוּ׃his neighbor

   Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

8. 8

   וַיָּפֶץand scattered abroadיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֹתָםthemמִשָּׁםfrom thereעַל־פְּנֵיover the face ofכׇל־הָאָרֶץall the earthוַיַּחְדְּלוּand they ceasedלִבְנֹתbuildingהָעִיר׃the city

   So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

9. 9

   עַל־כֵּןthereforeקָרָאis calledשְׁמָהּits nameבָּבֶלBabelכִּי־שָׁםfor thereבָּלַלconfusedיְהֹוָהthe LORDשְׂפַתthe language ofכׇּל־הָאָרֶץall the earthוּמִשָּׁםand from thereהֱפִיצָםscattered them abroadיְהֹוָהthe LORDעַל־פְּנֵיover the face ofכׇּל־הָאָרֶץ׃all the earth

   Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

10. 10

    אֵלֶּהtheseתּוֹלְדֹתthe generations ofשֵׁםShemשֵׁםShemבֶּן־מְאַתa son of a hundredשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatאֶת־אַרְפַּכְשָׁדArphaxadשְׁנָתַיִםtwo yearsאַחַרafterהַמַּבּוּל׃the flood

    These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:

    וַיְחִי־שֵׁםand lived Shemאַחֲרֵיafterהוֹלִידוֹhe begot himאֶת־אַרְפַּכְשָׁדArphaxadחֲמֵשׁfiveמֵאוֹתhundredשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatבָּנִיםsonsוּבָנוֹת׃and daughters

    And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

12. 12

    וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁדand Arphaxadחַיlivedחָמֵשׁfiveוּשְׁלֹשִׁיםand thirtyשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatאֶת־שָׁלַח׃Shelah

    And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah:

13. 13

    וַיְחִיand livedאַרְפַּכְשַׁדArphaxadאַחֲרֵיafterהוֹלִידוֹhe begot himאֶת־שֶׁלַחShelahשָׁלֹשׁthreeשָׁנִיםyearsוְאַרְבַּעand fourמֵאוֹתhundredשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatבָּנִיםsonsוּבָנוֹת׃and daughters

    And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.

14. 14

    וְשֶׁלַחand Shelahחַיlivedשְׁלֹשִׁיםthirtyשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatאֶת־עֵבֶר׃Eber

    And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:

15. 15

    וַיְחִי־שֶׁלַחand lived Shelahאַחֲרֵיafterהוֹלִידוֹhe begot himאֶת־עֵבֶרEberשָׁלֹשׁthreeשָׁנִיםyearsוְאַרְבַּעand fourמֵאוֹתhundredשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatבָּנִיםsonsוּבָנוֹת׃and daughters

    And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.

16. 16

    וַיְחִי־עֵבֶרand lived Eberאַרְבַּעfourוּשְׁלֹשִׁיםand thirtyשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatאֶת־פָּלֶג׃Peleg

    And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:

17. 17

    וַיְחִי־עֵבֶרand lived Eberאַחֲרֵיafterהוֹלִידוֹhe begot himאֶת־פֶּלֶגPelegשְׁלֹשִׁיםthirtyשָׁנָהyearsוְאַרְבַּעand fourמֵאוֹתhundredשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatבָּנִיםsonsוּבָנוֹת׃and daughters

    And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.

18. 18

    וַיְחִי־פֶלֶגand lived Pelegשְׁלֹשִׁיםthirtyשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatאֶת־רְעוּ׃Reu

    And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:

19. 19

    וַיְחִי־פֶלֶגand lived Pelegאַחֲרֵיafterהוֹלִידוֹhe begot himאֶת־רְעוּReuתֵּשַׁעnineשָׁנִיםyearsוּמָאתַיִםand two hundredשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatבָּנִיםsonsוּבָנוֹת׃and daughters

    And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.

20. 20

    וַיְחִיand livedרְעוּReuשְׁתַּיִםtwoוּשְׁלֹשִׁיםand thirtyשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatאֶת־שְׂרוּג׃Serug

    And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:

21. 21

    וַיְחִיand livedרְעוּReuאַחֲרֵיafterהוֹלִידוֹhe begot himאֶת־שְׂרוּגSerugשֶׁבַעsevenשָׁנִיםyearsוּמָאתַיִםand two hundredשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatבָּנִיםsonsוּבָנוֹת׃and daughters

    And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.

22. 22

    וַיְחִיand livedשְׂרוּגSerugשְׁלֹשִׁיםthirtyשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatאֶת־נָחוֹר׃Nahor

    And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:

23. 23

    וַיְחִיand livedשְׂרוּגSerugאַחֲרֵיafterהוֹלִידוֹhe begot himאֶת־נָחוֹרNahorמָאתַיִםtwo hundredשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatבָּנִיםsonsוּבָנוֹת׃and daughters

    And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

24. 24

    וַיְחִיand livedנָחוֹרNahorתֵּשַׁעnineוְעֶשְׂרִיםand twentyשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatאֶת־תָּרַח׃Terah

    And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:

25. 25

    וַיְחִיand livedנָחוֹרNahorאַחֲרֵיafterהוֹלִידוֹhe begot himאֶת־תֶּרַחTerahתְּשַׁע־עֶשְׂרֵהnineteenשָׁנָהyearsוּמְאַתand one hundredשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatבָּנִיםsonsוּבָנוֹת׃and daughters

    And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.

26. 26

    וַיְחִי־תֶרַחand lived Terahשִׁבְעִיםseventyשָׁנָהyearsוַיּוֹלֶדand begatאֶת־אַבְרָםAbramאֶת־נָחוֹרNahorוְאֶת־הָרָן׃and Haran

    And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27. 27

    וְאֵלֶּהand theseתּוֹלְדֹתthe generations ofתֶּרַחTerahתֶּרַחTerahהוֹלִידbegatאֶת־אַבְרָםAbramאֶת־נָחוֹרNahorוְאֶת־הָרָןand Haranוְהָרָןand Haranהוֹלִידbegatאֶת־לוֹט׃Lot

    Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

28. 28

    וַיָּמׇתand he diedהָרָןHaranעַל־פְּנֵיupon the face ofתֶּרַחTerahאָבִיוhis fatherבְּאֶרֶץin the land ofמוֹלַדְתּוֹhis kindredבְּאוּרin Ur ofכַּשְׂדִּים׃the Chaldees

    And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

29. 29

    וַיִּקַּחand tookאַבְרָםAbramוְנָחוֹרand Nahorלָהֶםto themנָשִׁיםwivesשֵׁםthe name ofאֵשֶׁת־אַבְרָםthe wife of AbramשָׂרָיSaraiוְשֵׁםand the name ofאֵשֶׁת־נָחוֹרthe wife of NahorמִלְכָּהMilcahבַּת־הָרָןthe daughter of Haranאֲבִי־מִלְכָּהthe father of Milcahוַאֲבִיand the father ofיִסְכָּה׃Iscah

    And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

30. 30

    וַתְּהִיand wasשָׂרַיSaraiעֲקָרָהbarrenאֵיןthere was notלָהּto herוָלָד׃a child

    But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31. 31

    וַיִּקַּחand tookתֶּרַחTerahאֶת־אַבְרָםAbramבְּנוֹhis sonוְאֶת־לוֹטand Lotבֶּן־הָרָןthe son of Haranבֶּן־בְּנוֹson of his sonוְאֵתandשָׂרַיSaraiכַּלָּתוֹhis daughter-in-lawאֵשֶׁתthe wife ofאַבְרָםAbramבְּנוֹhis sonוַיֵּצְאוּand they departedאִתָּםwith themמֵאוּרfrom Urכַּשְׂדִּיםof the Chaldeesלָלֶכֶתto goאַרְצָהto the earthכְּנַעַןCanaanוַיָּבֹאוּand they cameעַד־חָרָןuntil Haranוַיֵּשְׁבוּand they had dweltשָׁם׃there

    And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.

32. 32

    וַיִּהְיוּand they wereיְמֵי־תֶרַחdays of Terahחָמֵשׁfiveשָׁנִיםyearsוּמָאתַיִםand two hundredשָׁנָהyearsוַיָּמׇתand he diedתֶּרַחTerahבְּחָרָן׃in Haran

    And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.
