Ezra 5 עֶזְרָא פרק ה׳

1. 1

   וְהִתְנַבִּיand he prophesiedחַגַּיHaggai(נביאה)[נְבִיָּא]a prophetוּזְכַרְיָהand Zechariahבַר־עִדּוֹאson of Iddoנְבִיַּאיָּאthe prophetעַל־יְהוּדָיֵאupon the Jewsדִּיwhichבִיהוּדwere in Judahוּבִירוּשְׁלֶםand in Jerusalemבְּשֻׁםin the name ofאֱלָהּGodיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelעֲלֵיהוֹן׃who was over them

   Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them.

2. 2

   בֵּאדַיִןthenקָמוּrose upזְרֻבָּבֶלZerubbabelבַּר־שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵלson of Shealtielוְיֵשׁוּעַand Jeshuaבַּר־יוֹצָדָקson of Jozadakוְשָׁרִיוand they beganלְמִבְנֵאto buildבֵּיתthe house ofאֱלָהָאGodדִּיwhichבִירוּשְׁלֶםis in Jerusalemוְעִמְּהוֹןand were with themנְבִיַּאיָּאthe prophetדִי־אֱלָהָאof Godמְסָעֲדִיןsupportingלְהוֹן׃to them

   Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

3. 3

   בֵּהּ־זִמְנָאat that timeאֲתָהhe cameעֲלֵיהוֹןwho was over themתַּתְּנַיTatnaiפַּחַתthe governor ofעֲבַר־נַהֲרָהthe region beyond the riverוּשְׁתַרand Shethar-בּוֹזְנַיBozenaiוּכְנָוָתְהוֹןand their cohortsוְכֵןand soאָמְרִיןthey were sayingלְהֹםto themמַן־שָׂםwho setלְכֹםfor youטְעֵםcommandבַּיְתָאthe houseדְנָהthisלִבְּנֵאto buildוְאֻשַּׁרְנָאand the structureדְנָהthisלְשַׁכְלָלָה׃to finish

   At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?

   אֱדַיִןthenכְּנֵמָאas followsאֲמַרְנָאwe saidלְּהֹםto themמַן־אִנּוּןwho are theyשְׁמָהָתthe names ofגֻּבְרַיָּאthe menדִּי־דְנָהwhich thisבִנְיָנָאthe buildingבָּנַיִן׃they are building

   Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?

   וְעֵיןand the eye ofאֱלָהֲהֹםtheir Godהֲוָתit wasעַל־שָׂבֵיupon the elders ofיְהוּדָיֵאthe Jewsוְלָא־בַטִּלוּand not they made ceaseהִמּוֹthemעַד־טַעְמָאuntil the decreeלְדָרְיָוֶשׁto Dariusיְהָךְit will comeוֶאֱדַיִןand thenיְתִיבוּןthey will send backנִשְׁתְּוָנָאthe letterעַל־דְּנָה׃upon this

   But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.

   פַּרְשֶׁגֶןthe copy ofאִגַּרְתָּאthe letterדִּי־שְׁלַחwhich sendתַּתְּנַיTatnaiפַּחַתthe governor ofעֲבַר־נַהֲרָהthe region beyond the riverוּשְׁתַרand Shethar-בּוֹזְנַיBozenaiוּכְנָוָתֵהּand his cohortsאֲפַרְסְכָיֵאthe officialsדִּיwhichבַּעֲבַרin the region beyondנַהֲרָהthe riverעַל־דָּרְיָוֶשׁupon Dariusמַלְכָּא׃the king

   The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions the Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto Darius the king:

7. 7

   פִּתְגָמָאthe decreeשְׁלַחוּthey sentעֲלוֹהִיto himוְכִדְנָהand according to thisכְּתִיבit was writtenבְּגַוֵּהּin its midstלְדָרְיָוֶשׁto Dariusמַלְכָּאthe kingשְׁלָמָאthe peaceכֹלָּא׃all

   They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace.

8. 8

   יְדִיעַknownלֶהֱוֵאlet it beלְמַלְכָּאto the kingדִּי־אֲזַלְנָאwhich we wentלִיהוּדto Judeaמְדִינְתָּאthe provinceלְבֵיתto the house ofאֱלָהָאGodרַבָּאgreatוְהוּאand heמִתְבְּנֵאis being builtאֶבֶןstoneגְּלָלrollingוְאָעand timberמִתְּשָׂםis being setבְּכֻתְלַיָּאin the wallsוַעֲבִידְתָּאand the workדָךְthisאׇסְפַּרְנָאdiligentlyמִתְעַבְדָאis being doneוּמַצְלַחand is prosperingבְּיֶדְהֹם׃in their hand

   Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.

9. 9

   אֱדַיִןthenשְׁאֵלְנָאwe askedלְשָׂבַיָּאto the eldersאִלֵּךְtheseכְּנֵמָאas followsאֲמַרְנָאwe saidלְּהֹםto themמַן־שָׂםwho setלְכֹםfor youטְעֵםcommandבַּיְתָאthe houseדְנָהthisלְמִבְנְיָהto buildוְאֻשַּׁרְנָאand the structureדְנָהthisלְשַׁכְלָלָה׃to finish

   Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?

10. 10

    וְאַףand moreoverשְׁמָהָתְהֹםtheir namesשְׁאֵלְנָאwe askedלְּהֹםto themלְהוֹדָעוּתָךְto make known to youדִּיwhichנִכְתֻּבwe will writeשֻׁם־גֻּבְרַיָּאthe name of the menדִּיwhichבְרָאשֵׁיהֹם׃at their heads

    We asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them.

11. 11

    וּכְנֵמָאand as followsפִתְגָמָאthe wordהֲתִיבוּנָאthey sent back to usלְמֵמַרto sayאֲנַחְנָאweהִמּוֹthemעַבְדוֹהִיhis servantsדִי־אֱלָהּof Godשְׁמַיָּאheavensוְאַרְעָאand the earthוּבָנַיִןand we are buildingבַּיְתָאthe houseדִּי־הֲוָאwhich it wasבְנֵהbuiltמִקַּדְמַתfrom the former time ofדְּנָהthisשְׁנִיןyearsשַׂגִּיאָןmanyוּמֶלֶךְand a kingלְיִשְׂרָאֵלto Israelרַבgreatבְּנָהִיhe built itוְשַׁכְלְלֵהּ׃and he finished it

    And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up.

12. 12

    לָהֵןbutמִן־דִּיfrom whichהַרְגִּזוּthey enragedאֲבָהָתַנָאfathers ourלֶאֱלָהּthe God ofשְׁמַיָּאheavensיְהַבhe gaveהִמּוֹthemבְּיַדin the hand ofנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרNebuchadnezzarמֶלֶךְ־בָּבֶלking of Babylon(כסדיא)[כַּסְדָּאָה]the Chaldeanוּבַיְתָהand the houseדְנָהthisסַתְרֵהּhe destroyed itוְעַמָּהand her peopleהַגְלִיhe took into exileלְבָבֶל׃to Babylon

    But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

13. 13

    בְּרַםneverthelessבִּשְׁנַתin the year ofחֲדָהoneלְכוֹרֶשׁof Cyrusמַלְכָּאthe kingדִּיwhichבָבֶלBabylonכּוֹרֶשׁCyrusמַלְכָּאthe kingשָׂםsetטְעֵםcommandבֵּית־אֱלָהָאhouse of Godדְנָהthisלִבְּנֵא׃to build

    But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.

14. 14

    וְאַףand moreoverמָאנַיָּאthe vesselsדִי־בֵית־אֱלָהָאof house of Godדִּיwhichדַהֲבָהgoldוְכַסְפָּאand silverדִּיwhichנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרNebuchadnezzarהַנְפֵּקhe had brought outמִן־הֵיכְלָאfrom the palaceדִּיwhichבִירוּשְׁלֶםis in Jerusalemוְהֵיבֵלand he carriedהִמּוֹthemלְהֵיכְלָאto the templeדִּיwhichבָבֶלBabylonהַנְפֵּקhe had brought outהִמּוֹthemכּוֹרֶשׁCyrusמַלְכָּאthe kingמִן־הֵיכְלָאfrom the palaceדִּיwhichבָבֶלBabylonוִיהִיבוּand they were givenלְשֵׁשְׁבַּצַּרto Sheshbazzarשְׁמֵהּhis nameדִּיwhichפֶחָהgovernorשָׂמֵהּ׃he had made him

    And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;

    וַאֲמַר־לֵהּand he said to him(אלה)[אֵל]may notמָאנַיָּאthe vesselsשֵׂאtakeאֵזֶל־אֲחֵתgo depositהִמּוֹthemבְּהֵיכְלָאin the templeדִּיwhichבִירוּשְׁלֶםis in Jerusalemוּבֵיתand house ofאֱלָהָאGodיִתְבְּנֵאlet it be builtעַל־אַתְרֵהּ׃upon its place

    And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in his place.

16. 16

    אֱדַיִןthenשֵׁשְׁבַּצַּרSheshbazzarדֵּךְthisאֲתָאhe cameיְהַבhe gaveאֻשַּׁיָּאthe foundationsדִּי־בֵיתwhich house ofאֱלָהָאGodדִּיwhichבִירוּשְׁלֶםis in Jerusalemוּמִן־אֱדַיִןand from thenוְעַד־כְּעַןand unto nowמִתְבְּנֵאis being builtוְלָאand notשְׁלִם׃it is finished

    Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.

17. 17

    וּכְעַןand nowהֵןbeholdעַל־מַלְכָּאupon the kingטָבit is goodיִתְבַּקַּרlet it be searchedבְּבֵיתin the house ofגִּנְזַיָּאthe treasuresדִּי־מַלְכָּאwhich the kingתַמָּהthereדִּיwhichבְּבָבֶלon Babylonהֵןbeholdאִיתַיthere isדִּי־מִן־כּוֹרֶשׁwhich from Cyrusמַלְכָּאthe kingשִׂיםputטְעֵםcommandלְמִבְנֵאto buildבֵּית־אֱלָהָאhouse of Godדֵךְthisבִּירוּשְׁלֶםis in Jerusalemוּרְעוּתand the will ofמַלְכָּאthe kingעַל־דְּנָהupon thisיִשְׁלַחhe will sendעֲלֶינָא׃to us

    Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
