Deuteronomy 19 דְּבָרִים פרק י״ט

1. 1

   כִּי־יַכְרִיתwhen will cut offיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָyour Godאֶת־הַגּוֹיִםthe nationsאֲשֶׁרwhichיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָyour Godנֹתֵןgivingלְךָfor youאֶת־אַרְצָםtheir own landוִירִשְׁתָּםand you will dispossess themוְיָשַׁבְתָּand you shall dwellבְעָרֵיהֶםin their citiesוּבְבָתֵּיהֶם׃their houses

   When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;

   שָׁלוֹשׁthreeעָרִיםcitiesתַּבְדִּילyou will set apartלָךְto youבְּתוֹךְamongאַרְצְךָyour landאֲשֶׁרwhichיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָyour Godנֹתֵןgivingלְךָfor youלְרִשְׁתָּהּ׃to possess it

   Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

3. 3

   תָּכִיןyou will establishלְךָfor youהַדֶּרֶךְthe wayוְשִׁלַּשְׁתָּand you will divide into threeאֶת־גְּבוּלborder ofאַרְצְךָyour landאֲשֶׁרwhichיַנְחִילְךָgives you to inheritיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָyour Godוְהָיָהand beלָנוּסto fleeשָׁמָּהthereכׇּל־רֹצֵחַ׃all a manslayer

   Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.

   וְזֶהand thisדְּבַרthe case ofהָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerאֲשֶׁר־יָנוּסwhich fleeשָׁמָּהthereוָחָיand liveאֲשֶׁרwhichיַכֶּהwill smiteאֶת־רֵעֵהוּhis neighborבִּבְלִי־דַעַתwith no knowledgeוְהוּאand heלֹא־שֹׂנֵאhated notלוֹto himמִתְּמֹלfrom yesterdayשִׁלְשֹׁם׃three days ago

   And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;

   וַאֲשֶׁרand as whenיָבֹאshall comeאֶת־רֵעֵהוּhis neighborבַיַּעַרin the forestלַחְטֹבto cutעֵצִיםwoodוְנִדְּחָהand swingsיָדוֹhis handבַגַּרְזֶןby the axeלִכְרֹתto cut downהָעֵץthe treeוְנָשַׁלand slips offהַבַּרְזֶלthe ironמִן־הָעֵץfrom the treeוּמָצָאand he will findאֶת־רֵעֵהוּhis neighborוָמֵתand he dieהוּאheיָנוּסshall fleeאֶל־אַחַתto oneהֶעָרִים־הָאֵלֶּהthe cities theseוָחָי׃and live

   As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:

   פֶּן־יִרְדֹּףlest should pursueגֹּאֵלthe avenger ofהַדָּםthe bloodאַחֲרֵיafterהָרֹצֵחַthe manslayerכִּי־יֵחַםbecause it will be hotלְבָבוֹhis heartוְהִשִּׂיגוֹand he will overtake himכִּי־יִרְבֶּהbecause is longהַדֶּרֶךְthe wayוְהִכָּהוּand slay himנָפֶשׁmortallyוְלוֹand unto himאֵיןthere is noמִשְׁפַּט־מָוֶתjudgment of deathכִּיbecauseלֹאnotשֹׂנֵאhatedהוּאheלוֹto himמִתְּמוֹלfrom yesterdayשִׁלְשׁוֹם׃three days ago

   Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.

   עַל־כֵּןthereforeאָנֹכִיIמְצַוְּךָam commanding youלֵאמֹרsayingשָׁלֹשׁthreeעָרִיםcitiesתַּבְדִּילyou will set apartלָךְ׃to you

   Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.

8. 8

   וְאִם־יַרְחִיבand if he will enlargeיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָyour Godאֶת־גְּבֻלְךָyour borderכַּאֲשֶׁרasנִשְׁבַּעsworeלַאֲבֹתֶיךָto your ancestorsוְנָתַןand he shall giveלְךָfor youאֶת־כׇּל־הָאָרֶץall the landאֲשֶׁרwhichדִּבֶּרspokeלָתֵתto giveלַאֲבֹתֶיךָ׃to your ancestors

   And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;

9. 9

   כִּי־תִשְׁמֹרif you keepאֶת־כׇּל־הַמִּצְוָהall the commandmentהַזֹּאתthisלַעֲשֹׂתָהּto do itאֲשֶׁרwhichאָנֹכִיIמְצַוְּךָam commanding youהַיּוֹםthe dayלְאַהֲבָהto loveאֶת־יְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָyour Godוְלָלֶכֶתand to goבִּדְרָכָיוin His waysכׇּל־הַיָּמִיםall the daysוְיָסַפְתָּand you will addלְךָfor youעוֹדany moreשָׁלֹשׁthreeעָרִיםcitiesעַלuponהַשָּׁלֹשׁthe threeהָאֵלֶּה׃these

   If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:

10. 10

    וְלֹאand notיִשָּׁפֵךְpoured out beדָּםbloodנָקִיblamelessבְּקֶרֶבamongאַרְצְךָyour landאֲשֶׁרwhichיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָyour Godנֹתֵןgivingלְךָfor youנַחֲלָהinheritanceוְהָיָהand beעָלֶיךָupon youדָּמִים׃bloodguilt

    That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

11. 11

    וְכִי־יִהְיֶהand if there beאִישׁa manשֹׂנֵאhatedלְרֵעֵהוּto his neighborוְאָרַבand he will lie in waitלוֹto himוְקָםand shall ariseעָלָיוupon himוְהִכָּהוּand smite himנֶפֶשׁsoulוָמֵתand he dieוְנָסand he will fleeאֶל־אַחַתto oneהֶעָרִיםthe citiesהָאֵל׃these

    But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:

12. 12

    וְשָׁלְחוּand they sent forthזִקְנֵיthe elders ofעִירוֹhis cityוְלָקְחוּand they will takeאֹתוֹhimמִשָּׁםfrom thereוְנָתְנוּand they shall giveאֹתוֹhimבְּיַדin the hand ofגֹּאֵלthe avenger ofהַדָּםthe bloodוָמֵת׃that he die

    Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

13. 13

    לֹא־תָחוֹסnot it will look with pityעֵינְךָyour eyeעָלָיוupon himוּבִעַרְתָּand you will removeדַם־הַנָּקִיthe blood of the innocentמִיִּשְׂרָאֵלfrom Israelוְטוֹבand it shall be wellלָךְ׃to you

    Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.

14. 14

    לֹאnotתַסִּיגyou will displaceגְּבוּלborder ofרֵעֲךָyour neighborאֲשֶׁרwhichגָּבְלוּthey set boundsרִאשֹׁנִיםthey of old timeבְּנַחֲלָתְךָin your inheritanceאֲשֶׁרwhichתִּנְחַלyou will inheritבָּאָרֶץin the landאֲשֶׁרwhichיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֱלֹהֶיךָyour Godנֹתֵןgivingלְךָfor youלְרִשְׁתָּהּ׃to possess it

    Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

15. 15

    לֹא־יָקוּםnot he shall riseעֵדwitnessאֶחָדoneבְּאִישׁagainst a manלְכׇל־עָוֺןto all iniquityוּלְכׇל־חַטָּאתand to all sinבְּכׇל־חֵטְאin all sinאֲשֶׁרwhichיֶחֱטָאhe sinsעַל־פִּיaccording toשְׁנֵיtwoעֵדִיםwitnessesאוֹorעַל־פִּיaccording toשְׁלֹשָׁה־עֵדִיםthree witnessesיָקוּםshall be establishedדָּבָר׃a matter

    One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

16. 16

    כִּי־יָקוּםif he shall riseעֵד־חָמָסa witness of violenceבְּאִישׁagainst a manלַעֲנוֹתto testifyבּוֹagainst himסָרָה׃revolt

    If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;

17. 17

    וְעָמְדוּand shall standשְׁנֵי־הָאֲנָשִׁיםthe two menאֲשֶׁר־לָהֶםwhich to themהָרִיבthe contentionלִפְנֵיbeforeיְהֹוָהthe LORDלִפְנֵיbeforeהַכֹּהֲנִיםthe priestsוְהַשֹּׁפְטִיםand the judgesאֲשֶׁרwhichיִהְיוּshall beבַּיָּמִיםin the daysהָהֵם׃those

    Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;

18. 18

    וְדָרְשׁוּand they will investigateהַשֹּׁפְטִיםthe judgesהֵיטֵבwellוְהִנֵּהand beholdעֵד־שֶׁקֶרa false witnessהָעֵדthe witnessשֶׁקֶרfalselyעָנָהhe has testifiedבְאָחִיו׃against his countryman

    And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;

19. 19

    וַעֲשִׂיתֶםthen shall you doלוֹto himכַּאֲשֶׁרasזָמַםhe purposedלַעֲשׂוֹתto doלְאָחִיוto his brotherוּבִעַרְתָּand you will removeהָרָעthat which is evilמִקִּרְבֶּךָ׃from your midst

    Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

20. 20

    וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִיםand the remainingיִשְׁמְעוּthey hearkenוְיִרָאוּand they may fearוְלֹא־יֹסִפוּand not they shall againלַעֲשׂוֹתto doעוֹדany moreכַּדָּבָרaccording to the wordהָרָעthat which is evilהַזֶּהthisבְּקִרְבֶּךָ׃in your midst

    And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.

21. 21

    וְלֹאand notתָחוֹסit will look with pityעֵינֶךָyour eyeנֶפֶשׁsoulבְּנֶפֶשׁfor soulעַיִןeyeבְּעַיִןfor eyeשֵׁןtoothבְּשֵׁןfor toothיָדhandבְּיָדfor handרֶגֶלfootבְּרָגֶל׃for foot

    And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
