Daniel 1 דָּנִיֵּאל פרק א׳

   In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

   וַיִּתֵּןvay/yit/TENand gaveאֲדֹנָיa/do/NAYthe Lordבְּיָדוֹbe/ya/DOinto his handאֶת־יְהוֹיָקִיםet-Ye/ho/ya/KIMJehoiakimמֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָהME/lekh-Ye/hu/DAking of Judahוּמִקְצָתu/mik/TSATand some ofכְּלֵיke/LEthe vessels ofבֵית־הָאֱלֹהִיםvet-ha/e/lo/HIMthe house of Godוַיְבִיאֵםvay/vi/EMand he brought themאֶרֶץ־שִׁנְעָרE/rets-Shin/ARto the land of Shinarבֵּיתbetto the house ofאֱלֹהָיוe/lo/HAYVhis godוְאֶת־הַכֵּלִיםve/ET-hak/ke/LIMand the vesselsהֵבִיאhe/VIhe broughtבֵּיתbetinto the house ofאוֹצַרo/TSARthe treasury ofאֱלֹהָיו׃e/lo/HAYVhis god

   And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingלְאַשְׁפְּנַזle/Ash/pe/NAZto Ashpenazרַבravthe master ofסָרִיסָיוsa/ri/SAYVhis officialsלְהָבִיאle/ha/VIto bringמִבְּנֵיmib/be/NEsome of the sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוּמִזֶּרַעu/miz/ZE/raand of the seed ofהַמְּלוּכָהham/me/lu/KHAthe kingshipוּמִן־הַפַּרְתְּמִים׃u/MIN-hap/par/te/MIMand of the nobles

   And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;

   יְלָדִיםye/la/DIMyouthsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoאֵין־בָּהֶםen-ba/HEMthere is not in themכׇּל־מאֿוּםkol-mumany blemishוְטוֹבֵיve/TO/veand good ofמַרְאֶהmar/Eappearanceוּמַשְׂכִּלִיםu/mas/ki/LIMand skilledבְּכׇל־חׇכְמָהbe/KHOL-chokh/MAin all wisdomוְיֹדְעֵיve/YOD/eand knowingדַעַתDA/atknowledgeוּמְבִינֵיu/me/vi/NEand understandingמַדָּעmad/DAlearningוַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand whoכֹּחַKO/achabilityבָּהֶםba/HEMis in themלַעֲמֹדla/a/MODto standבְּהֵיכַלbe/he/KHALin the palace ofהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingוּלְלַמְּדָםu/le/lam/me/DAMand to teach themסֵפֶרSE/ferthe writingוּלְשׁוֹןu/le/SHONand the language ofכַּשְׂדִּים׃kaS/DIMthe Chaldeans

   Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

   וַיְמַןvay/MANand appointedלָהֶםla/HEMfor themהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingדְּבַר־יוֹםde/VAR-yoma day’s portionבְּיוֹמוֹbe/yo/MOin its dayמִפַּת־בַּגmip/PAT-bagof the delicacies ofהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingוּמִיֵּיןu/miy/YENand of the wine ofמִשְׁתָּיוmish/TAYVhis drinkingוּלְגַדְּלָםu/le/gad/de/LAMand to raise themשָׁנִיםsha/NIMyearsשָׁלוֹשׁsha/LOSHthreeוּמִקְצָתָםu/mik/tsa/TAMand at the end of themיַעַמְדוּya/am/DUthey would standלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהַמֶּלֶךְ׃ham/ME/lekhthe king

   And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

   Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

   וַיָּשֶׂםvay/YA/semand gaveלָהֶםla/HEMto themשַׂרsarthe chief ofהַסָּרִיסִיםhas/sa/ri/SIMthe officialsשֵׁמוֹתshe/MOTnamesוַיָּשֶׂםvay/YA/semand gaveלְדָנִיֵּאלle/Da/niy/YELto DanielבֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּרBel/te/sha/TSARBelteshazzarוְלַחֲנַנְיָהve/La/cha/nan/YAand to HananiahשַׁדְרַךְShad/RAKHShadrachוּלְמִישָׁאֵלu/Le/mi/sha/ELand to MishaelמֵישַׁךְMe/SHAKHMeshachוְלַעֲזַרְיָהve/La/a/zar/YAand to AzariahעֲבֵדA/VEDAbed-נְגוֹ׃ne/GOnego

   Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.

   וַיָּשֶׂםvay/YA/semand setדָּנִיֵּאלDa/niy/YELDanielעַל־לִבּוֹal-lib/BOon his heartאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹא־יִתְגָּאַלlo-yit/ga/ALhe would not defile himselfבְּפַת־בַּגbe/FAT-bagwith the delicacies ofהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingוּבְיֵיןu/ve/YENand with the wine ofמִשְׁתָּיוmish/TAYVhis drinkingוַיְבַקֵּשׁvay/vak/KESHand he askedמִשַּׂרmis/SARof the chief ofהַסָּרִיסִיםhas/sa/ri/SIMthe officialsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹאlonotיִתְגָּאָל׃yit/ga/ALhe might defile himself

   But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

   וַיִּתֵּןvay/yit/TENand gaveהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodאֶת־דָּנִיֵּאלet-Da/niy/YELDanielלְחֶסֶדle/CHE/sedto kindnessוּלְרַחֲמִיםu/le/ra/cha/MIMand to compassionלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeשַׂרsarthe chief ofהַסָּרִיסִים׃has/sa/ri/SIMthe officials

   Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

10. 10

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשַׂרsarthe chief ofהַסָּרִיסִיםhas/sa/ri/SIMthe officialsלְדָנִיֵּאלle/Da/niy/YELto Danielיָרֵאya/REfearאֲנִיa/NIIאֶת־אֲדֹנִיet-a/do/NImy lordהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoמִנָּהmin/NAappointedאֶת־מַאֲכַלְכֶםet-ma/a/khal/KHEMyour foodוְאֶת־מִשְׁתֵּיכֶםve/ET-mish/te/KHEMand your drinkאֲשֶׁרa/SHERforלָמָּהLAM/mawhyיִרְאֶהyir/Eshould he seeאֶת־פְּנֵיכֶםet-pe/ne/KHEMyour facesזֹעֲפִיםzo/a/FIMdejectedמִן־הַיְלָדִיםmin-hay/la/DIMthan the youthsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho areכְּגִילְכֶםke/gi/le/KHEMof your ageוְחִיַּבְתֶּםve/chiy/yav/TEMand you would endangerאֶת־רֹאשִׁיet-ro/SHImy headלַמֶּלֶךְ׃lam/ME/lekhthe king

    And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.

11. 11

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּנִיֵּאלDa/niy/YELDanielאֶל־הַמֶּלְצַרel-ham/mel/TSARto the stewardאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomמִנָּהmin/NAhad appointedשַׂרsarthe chief ofהַסָּרִיסִיםhas/sa/ri/SIMthe officialsעַל־דָּנִיֵּאלal-Da/niy/YELover DanielחֲנַנְיָהCha/nan/YAHananiahמִישָׁאֵלMi/sha/ELMishaelוַעֲזַרְיָה׃va/A/zar/YAand Azariah

    Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

12. 12

    נַס־נָאnas-natest nowאֶת־עֲבָדֶיךָet-a/va/DE/khayour servantsיָמִיםya/MIMdaysעֲשָׂרָהa/sa/RAtenוְיִתְּנוּ־לָנוּve/yit/te/NU-LA/nuand let them give usמִן־הַזֵּרֹעִיםmin-haz/ze/ro/IMsome of the vegetablesוְנֹאכְלָהve/no/khe/LAand let us eatוּמַיִםu/MA/yimand waterוְנִשְׁתֶּה׃ve/nish/TEand let us drink

    Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

13. 13

    וְיֵרָאוּve/ye/ra/Uand let be seenלְפָנֶיךָle/fa/NE/khabefore youמַרְאֵינוּmar/E/nuour appearanceוּמַרְאֵהu/mar/Eand the appearance ofהַיְלָדִיםhay/la/DIMthe youthsהָאֹכְלִיםha/okh/LIMwho eatאֵת־פַּת־בַּגet-pat-bagthe delicacies ofהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingוְכַאֲשֶׁרve/kha/a/SHERand asתִּרְאֵהtir/Eyou seeעֲשֵׂהa/SEdealעִם־עֲבָדֶיךָ׃im-a/va/DE/khawith your servants

    Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

14. 14

    וַיִּשְׁמַעvay/yish/MAand he listenedלָהֶםla/HEMto themלַדָּבָרlad/da/VARin the matterהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַיְנַסֵּםvay/nas/SEMand he tested themיָמִיםya/MIMdaysעֲשָׂרָה׃a/sa/RAten

    So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

15. 15

    וּמִקְצָתu/mik/TSATand at the end ofיָמִיםya/MIMdaysעֲשָׂרָהa/sa/RAtenנִרְאָהnir/Aappearedמַרְאֵיהֶםmar/e/HEMtheir appearanceטוֹבtovbetterוּבְרִיאֵיu/ve/ri/Eand fatter inבָּשָׂרba/SARfleshמִן־כׇּל־הַיְלָדִיםmin-kol-hay/la/DIMthan all the youthsהָאֹכְלִיםha/okh/LIMwho ateאֵת־פַּת־בַּגet-pat-bagthe delicacies ofהַמֶּלֶךְ׃ham/ME/lekhthe king

    And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.

16. 16

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand soהַמֶּלְצַרham/mel/TSARthe stewardנֹשֵׂאno/SEtook awayאֶת־פַּת־בָּגָםet-pat-ba/GAMtheir delicaciesוְיֵיןve/YENand the wine ofמִשְׁתֵּיהֶםmish/te/HEMtheir drinkingוְנֹתֵןve/no/TENand gaveלָהֶםla/HEMto themזֵרְעֹנִים׃zer/o/NIMvegetables

    Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

17. 17

    וְהַיְלָדִיםve/hay/la/DIMand the youthsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseאַרְבַּעְתָּםar/ba/TAMthe four of themנָתַןna/TANgaveלָהֶםla/HEMto themהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodמַדָּעmad/DAlearningוְהַשְׂכֵּלve/has/KELand insightבְּכׇל־סֵפֶרbe/KHOL-SE/ferin all writingוְחׇכְמָהve/chokh/MAand wisdomוְדָנִיֵּאלve/Da/niy/YELand Danielהֵבִיןhe/VINunderstoodבְּכׇל־חָזוֹןbe/KHOL-cha/ZONall visionsוַחֲלֹמוֹת׃va/cha/lo/MOTand dreams

    As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

18. 18

    וּלְמִקְצָתu/le/mik/TSATand at the end ofהַיָּמִיםhay/ya/MIMthe daysאֲשֶׁר־אָמַרa/SHER-a/MARthat had saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingלַהֲבִיאָםla/ha/vi/AMto bring them inוַיְבִיאֵםvay/vi/EMand brought themשַׂרsarthe chief ofהַסָּרִיסִיםhas/sa/ri/SIMthe officialsלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeנְבֻכַדְנֶצַּר׃Ne/vu/khad/nets/TSARNebuchadnezzar

    Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

19. 19

    וַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand spokeאִתָּםit/TAMwith themהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingוְלֹאve/LOand notנִמְצָאnim/TSAwas foundמִכֻּלָּםmik/kul/LAMamong them allכְּדָנִיֵּאלke/Da/niy/YELlike DanielחֲנַנְיָהCha/nan/YAHananiahמִישָׁאֵלMi/sha/ELMishaelוַעֲזַרְיָהva/A/zar/YAand Azariahוַיַּעַמְדוּvay/ya/am/DUand stoodלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהַמֶּלֶךְ׃ham/ME/lekhthe king

    And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

20. 20

    וְכֹלve/KHOLand everyדְּבַרde/VARmatter ofחׇכְמַתchokh/MATwisdom ofבִּינָהbi/NAunderstandingאֲשֶׁר־בִּקֵּשׁa/SHER-bik/KESHthat askedמֵהֶםme/HEMof themהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingוַיִּמְצָאֵםvay/yim/tsa/EMhe found themעֶשֶׂרE/sertenיָדוֹתya/DOTtimesעַלalaboveכׇּל־הַחַרְטֻמִּיםkol-ha/char/tum/MIMall the magiciansהָאַשָּׁפִיםha/ash/sha/FIMthe conjurersאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereבְּכׇל־מַלְכוּתוֹ׃be/KHOL-mal/khu/TOin all his kingdom

    And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

21. 21

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand wasדָּנִיֵּאלDa/niy/YELDanielעַד־שְׁנַתad-she/NATuntil the yearאַחַתa/CHAToneלְכוֹרֶשׁle/KHO/reshof Cyrusהַמֶּלֶךְ׃ham/ME/lekhthe king

    And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
