1. 1

   וַיְהִיand-it-came-to-passכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenזָקֵןwas-oldשְׁמוּאֵלSamuelוַיָּשֶׂםand-he-madeאֶת־בָּנָיוhis-sonsשֹׁפְטִיםjudgesלְיִשְׂרָאֵל׃to-Israel

   And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2. 2

   וַיְהִיand-it-came-to-passשֶׁם־בְּנוֹthe-name-of-his-sonהַבְּכוֹרthe-firstbornיוֹאֵלJoelוְשֵׁםand-the-name-ofמִשְׁנֵהוּhis-secondאֲבִיָּהAbijahשֹׁפְטִיםthey-were-judgesבִּבְאֵרat-Beer-שָׁבַע׃sheba

   Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beer-sheba.

   וְלֹא־הָלְכוּand-walked-notבָנָיוhis-sonsבִּדְרָכָוin-his-waysוַיִּטּוּand-they-turned-asideאַחֲרֵיafterהַבָּצַעgainוַיִּקְחוּ־שֹׁחַדand-they-took-a-bribeוַיַּטּוּand-pervertedמִשְׁפָּט׃judgment

   And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

   וַיִּתְקַבְּצוּand-gathered-themselves-togetherכֹּלallזִקְנֵיthe-elders-ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוַיָּבֹאוּand-they-cameאֶל־שְׁמוּאֵלto-Samuelהָרָמָתָה׃to-Ramah

   Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

   וַיֹּאמְרוּand-they-saidאֵלָיוto-himהִנֵּהbeholdאַתָּהyouזָקַנְתָּare-oldוּבָנֶיךָand-your-sonsלֹאnotהָלְכוּwalkבִּדְרָכֶיךָin-your-waysעַתָּהnowשִׂימָה־לָּנוּappoint-for-usמֶלֶךְa-kingלְשׇׁפְטֵנוּto-judge-usכְּכׇל־הַגּוֹיִם׃like-all-the-nations

   And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

   וַיֵּרַעbut-displeasedהַדָּבָרthe-thingבְּעֵינֵיin-the-eyes-ofשְׁמוּאֵלSamuelכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenאָמְרוּthey-saidתְּנָה־לָּנוּgive-usמֶלֶךְa-kingלְשׇׁפְטֵנוּto-judge-usוַיִּתְפַּלֵּלand-prayedשְׁמוּאֵלSamuelאֶל־יְהֹוָה׃to-the-LORD

   But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.

   וַיֹּאמֶרand-saidיְהֹוָהthe-LORDאֶל־שְׁמוּאֵלto-Samuelשְׁמַעhearkenבְּקוֹלthe-voice-ofהָעָםthe-peopleלְכֹלin-allאֲשֶׁר־יֹאמְרוּthat-they-sayאֵלֶיךָto-youכִּיforלֹאnotאֹתְךָyouמָאָסוּhave-they-rejectedכִּי־אֹתִיbut-Meמָאֲסוּthey-have-rejectedמִמְּלֹךְthat-I-should-not-reignעֲלֵיהֶם׃upon-them

   And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

8. 8

   כְּכׇל־הַמַּעֲשִׂיםaccording-to-all-the-deedsאֲשֶׁר־עָשׂוּwhich-they-didמִיּוֹםfrom-the-dayהַעֲלֹתִיI-brought-them-upאוֹתָםthemמִמִּצְרַיִםout-of-Egyptוְעַד־הַיּוֹםand-unto-the-dayהַזֶּהthisוַיַּעַזְבֻנִיand-they-have-forsaken-Meוַיַּעַבְדוּand-they-servedאֱלֹהִים־אֲחֵרִיםother-godsכֵּןthusהֵמָּהtheyעֹשִׂיםare-doingגַּם־לָךְ׃also-for-you

   According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

   וְעַתָּהand-nowשְׁמַעhearkenבְּקוֹלָםto-their-voiceאַךְbutכִּי־הָעֵדbut-solemnlyתָּעִידyou-shall-protestבָּהֶםto-themוְהִגַּדְתָּand-showלָהֶםto-themמִשְׁפַּטthe-manner-ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe-kingאֲשֶׁרwhichיִמְלֹךְshall-reignעֲלֵיהֶם׃upon-them

   Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

    וַיֹּאמֶרand-saidשְׁמוּאֵלSamuelאֵת־כׇּל־דִּבְרֵיall-the-words-ofיְהֹוָהthe-LORDאֶל־הָעָםto-the-peopleהַשֹּׁאֲלִיםwho-askedמֵאִתּוֹfrom-himמֶלֶךְ׃a-king

    And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.

11. 11

    וַיֹּאמֶרand-saidזֶהthisיִהְיֶהshall-beמִשְׁפַּטthe-manner-ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe-kingאֲשֶׁרwhichיִמְלֹךְshall-reignעֲלֵיכֶםover-youאֶת־בְּנֵיכֶםyour-sonsיִקָּחhe-will-takeוְשָׂםand-appointלוֹfor-himselfבְּמֶרְכַּבְתּוֹfor-his-chariotsוּבְפָרָשָׁיוand-his-horsemenוְרָצוּand-they-shall-runלִפְנֵיbeforeמֶרְכַּבְתּוֹ׃his-chariot

    And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

    וְלָשׂוּםand-to-appointלוֹfor-himselfשָׂרֵיcaptains-ofאֲלָפִיםthousandוְשָׂרֵיand-captains-ofחֲמִשִּׁיםfiftyוְלַחֲרֹשׁand-to-plowחֲרִישׁוֹhis-plowingוְלִקְצֹרand-to-harvestקְצִירוֹhis-harvestוְלַעֲשׂוֹתand-to-makeכְּלֵי־מִלְחַמְתּוֹhis-weapons-of-warוּכְלֵיand-weapons-ofרִכְבּוֹ׃his-chariot

    And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

13. 13

    וְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיכֶםand-your-daughtersיִקָּחhe-will-takeלְרַקָּחוֹתto-be-perfumersוּלְטַבָּחוֹתand-cooksוּלְאֹפוֹת׃and-bakers

    And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

14. 14

    וְאֶת־שְׂדוֹתֵיכֶםand-your-fieldsוְאֶת־כַּרְמֵיכֶםand-your-vineyardsוְזֵיתֵיכֶםand-your-olive-yardsהַטּוֹבִיםthe-goodיִקָּחhe-will-takeוְנָתַןand-give-themלַעֲבָדָיו׃unto-his-servants

    And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

15. 15

    וְזַרְעֵיכֶםand-your-seedוְכַרְמֵיכֶםand-your-vineyardsיַעְשֹׂרhe-will-take-a-tenthוְנָתַןand-giveלְסָרִיסָיוto-his-officersוְלַעֲבָדָיו׃and-to-his-servants

    And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

16. 16

    וְאֶת־עַבְדֵיכֶםand-your-menservantsוְאֶת־שִׁפְחוֹתֵיכֶםand-your-maidservantsוְאֶת־בַּחוּרֵיכֶםand-your-young-menהַטּוֹבִיםthe-goodוְאֶת־חֲמוֹרֵיכֶםand-your-donkeysיִקָּחhe-will-takeוְעָשָׂהand-put-themלִמְלַאכְתּוֹ׃for-his-work

    And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

17. 17

    צֹאנְכֶםyour-flocksיַעְשֹׂרhe-will-take-a-tenthוְאַתֶּםand-youתִּהְיוּ־לוֹyou-shall-be-hisלַעֲבָדִים׃for-servants

    He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

18. 18

    וּזְעַקְתֶּםand-you-shall-cry-outבַּיּוֹםin-the-dayהַהוּאthatמִלִּפְנֵיfrom-the-presence-ofמַלְכְּכֶםyour-kingאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּחַרְתֶּםyou-have-chosenלָכֶםto-youוְלֹא־יַעֲנֶהand-will-not-answerיְהֹוָהthe-LORDאֶתְכֶםyouבַּיּוֹםin-the-dayהַהוּא׃that

    And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

19. 19

    וַיְמָאֲנוּand-refusedהָעָםthe-peopleלִשְׁמֹעַto-hearבְּקוֹלthe-voice-ofשְׁמוּאֵלSamuelוַיֹּאמְרוּand-they-saidלֹּאnayכִּיbecauseאִם־מֶלֶךְbut-a-kingיִהְיֶהshall-beעָלֵינוּ׃over-us

    Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

20. 20

    וְהָיִינוּand-we-will-beגַם־אֲנַחְנוּalso-weכְּכׇל־הַגּוֹיִםas-all-the-nationsוּשְׁפָטָנוּthat-may-judge-usמַלְכֵּנוּour-kingוְיָצָאand-go-outלְפָנֵינוּbefore-usוְנִלְחַםand-fightאֶת־מִלְחֲמֹתֵנוּ׃our-battles

    That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

21. 21

    וַיִּשְׁמַעand-heardשְׁמוּאֵלSamuelאֵת־כׇּל־דִּבְרֵיall-the-words-ofהָעָםthe-peopleוַיְדַבְּרֵםand-he-rehearsed-themבְּאׇזְנֵיin-the-ears-ofיְהֹוָה׃the-LORD

    And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.

22. 22

    וַיֹּאמֶרand-saidיְהֹוָהthe-LORDאֶל־שְׁמוּאֵלto-Samuelשְׁמַעhearkenבְּקוֹלָםto-their-voiceוְהִמְלַכְתָּand-make-themלָהֶםto-themמֶלֶךְa-kingוַיֹּאמֶרand-saidשְׁמוּאֵלSamuelאֶל־אַנְשֵׁיto-the-men-ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelלְכוּgoאִישׁa-manלְעִירוֹ׃to-his-own-city

    And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
