1. 1

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenזָקֵןza/KENwas oldשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelוַיָּשֶׂםvay/YA/semthat he madeאֶת־בָּנָיוet-ba/NAYVhis sonsשֹׁפְטִיםshof/TIMjudgesלְיִשְׂרָאֵל׃le/Yis/ra/ELover Israel

   And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2. 2

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand wasשֶׁם־בְּנוֹshem-be/NOthe name of his sonהַבְּכוֹרhab/be/KHORthe firstbornיוֹאֵלYo/ELJoelוְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the name ofמִשְׁנֵהוּmish/NE/huhis secondאֲבִיָּהA/viy/YAAbijahשֹׁפְטִיםshof/TIMjudgesבִּבְאֵרBiv/ERin Beer-שָׁבַע׃SHA/vasheba

   Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beer-sheba.

   וְלֹא־הָלְכוּve/LO-ha/le/KHUbut did not walkבָנָיוva/NAYVhis sonsבִּדְרָכָוbid/ra/KHAVin his waysוַיִּטּוּvay/yit/TUbut turned asideאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהַבָּצַעhab/BA/tsagainוַיִּקְחוּ־שֹׁחַדvay/yik/CHU-SHO/chadand took bribesוַיַּטּוּvay/yat/TUand pervertedמִשְׁפָּט׃mish/PATjustice

   And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

   וַיִּתְקַבְּצוּvay/yit/kab/be/TSUthen gathered togetherכֹּלkolallזִקְנֵיzik/NEthe elders ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameאֶל־שְׁמוּאֵלel-She/mu/ELto Samuelהָרָמָתָה׃ha/Ra/MA/tato Ramah

   Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

   וַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאַתָּהat/TAyouזָקַנְתָּza/KAN/taare oldוּבָנֶיךָu/va/NE/khaand your sonsלֹאlonotהָלְכוּha/le/KHUwalkבִּדְרָכֶיךָbid/ra/KHE/khain your waysעַתָּהat/TAnowשִׂימָה־לָּנוּSI/ma-LA/numake usמֶלֶךְME/lekha kingלְשׇׁפְטֵנוּle/shof/TE/nuto judge usכְּכׇל־הַגּוֹיִם׃ke/KHOL-hag/go/YIMlike all the nations

   And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

   וַיֵּרַעvay/YE/rabut was displeasingהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARthe thingבְּעֵינֵיbe/e/NEin the eyes ofשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenאָמְרוּa/me/RUthey saidתְּנָה־לָּנוּte/NA-LA/nugive usמֶלֶךְME/lekha kingלְשׇׁפְטֵנוּle/shof/TE/nuto judge usוַיִּתְפַּלֵּלvay/yit/pal/LELand prayedשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelאֶל־יְהֹוָה׃el-Adonaito the LORD

   But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.

7. 7

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶל־שְׁמוּאֵלel-She/mu/ELto Samuelשְׁמַעshe/MAhearkenבְּקוֹלbe/KOLthe voice ofהָעָםha/AMthe peopleלְכֹלle/KHOLin allאֲשֶׁר־יֹאמְרוּa/SHER-yo/me/RUthat they sayאֵלֶיךָe/LE/khato youכִּיkiforלֹאlonotאֹתְךָot/KHAyouמָאָסוּma/A/suhave they rejectedכִּי־אֹתִיki-o/TIbut Meמָאֲסוּma/a/SUthey have rejectedמִמְּלֹךְmim/me/LOKHfrom reigningעֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMover them

   And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

8. 8

   כְּכׇל־הַמַּעֲשִׂיםke/KHOL-ham/ma/a/SIMaccording to all the worksאֲשֶׁר־עָשׂוּa/SHER-a/SUthat they have doneמִיּוֹםmiy/YOMfrom the dayהַעֲלֹתִיha/a/lo/TII brought upאוֹתָםo/TAMthemמִמִּצְרַיִםmim/Mits/RA/yimout of Egyptוְעַד־הַיּוֹםve/AD-hay/YOMeven to dayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַיַּעַזְבֻנִיvay/ya/az/VU/niand they have forsaken Meוַיַּעַבְדוּvay/ya/av/DUand servedאֱלֹהִים־אֲחֵרִיםe/lo/HIM-a/che/RIMother godsכֵּןkensoהֵמָּהHEM/matheyעֹשִׂיםo/SIMare doingגַּם־לָךְ׃gam-lakhto you also

   According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

   וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowשְׁמַעshe/MAhearkenבְּקוֹלָםbe/ko/LAMto their voiceאַךְakhonlyכִּי־הָעֵדki-ha/EDbut warnתָּעִידta/IDyou shall warnבָּהֶםba/HEMthemוְהִגַּדְתָּve/hig/gad/TAand tellלָהֶםla/HEMthemמִשְׁפַּטmish/PATthe manner ofהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיִמְלֹךְyim/LOKHshall reignעֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMover them

   Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelאֵת־כׇּל־דִּבְרֵיet-kol-div/REall the words ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶל־הָעָםel-ha/AMto the peopleהַשֹּׁאֲלִיםhash/sho/a/LIMwho askedמֵאִתּוֹme/it/TOof himמֶלֶךְ׃ME/lekha king

    And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.

11. 11

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidזֶהzethisיִהְיֶהyih/YEshall beמִשְׁפַּטmish/PATthe manner ofהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיִמְלֹךְyim/LOKHshall reignעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMover youאֶת־בְּנֵיכֶםet-be/ne/KHEMyour sonsיִקָּחyik/KACHhe will takeוְשָׂםve/SAMand appoint themלוֹlofor himselfבְּמֶרְכַּבְתּוֹbe/mer/kav/TOto his chariotsוּבְפָרָשָׁיוu/ve/fa/ra/SHAYVand to his horsemenוְרָצוּve/ra/TSUand they shall runלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeמֶרְכַּבְתּוֹ׃mer/kav/TOhis chariot

    And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

12. 12

    וְלָשׂוּםve/la/SUMand to appointלוֹlofor himselfשָׂרֵיsa/REcommanders ofאֲלָפִיםa/la/FIMthousandsוְשָׂרֵיve/sa/REand commanders ofחֲמִשִּׁיםcha/mish/SHIMfiftiesוְלַחֲרֹשׁve/la/cha/ROSHand to plowחֲרִישׁוֹcha/ri/SHOhis groundוְלִקְצֹרve/lik/TSORand to reapקְצִירוֹke/tsi/ROhis harvestוְלַעֲשׂוֹתve/la/a/SOTand to makeכְּלֵי־מִלְחַמְתּוֹke/LE-mil/cham/TOhis weapons of warוּכְלֵיu/khe/LEand the equipment ofרִכְבּוֹ׃rikh/BOhis chariots

    And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

13. 13

    וְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיכֶםve/ET-be/no/te/KHEMand your daughtersיִקָּחyik/KACHhe will takeלְרַקָּחוֹתle/rak/ka/CHOTas perfumersוּלְטַבָּחוֹתu/le/tab/ba/CHOTand cooksוּלְאֹפוֹת׃u/le/o/FOTand bakers

    And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

14. 14

    וְאֶת־שְׂדוֹתֵיכֶםve/ET-se/do/te/KHEMand your fieldsוְאֶת־כַּרְמֵיכֶםve/ET-kar/me/KHEMand your vineyardsוְזֵיתֵיכֶםve/ze/te/KHEMand your olive grovesהַטּוֹבִיםhat/to/VIMthe bestיִקָּחyik/KACHhe will takeוְנָתַןve/na/TANand give themלַעֲבָדָיו׃la/a/va/DAYVto his servants

    And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

15. 15

    וְזַרְעֵיכֶםve/zar/e/KHEMand your seedוְכַרְמֵיכֶםve/khar/me/KHEMand your vineyardsיַעְשֹׂרya/SORhe will take the tenth ofוְנָתַןve/na/TANand giveלְסָרִיסָיוle/sa/ri/SAYVto his officersוְלַעֲבָדָיו׃ve/la/a/va/DAYVand to his servants

    And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

16. 16

    וְאֶת־עַבְדֵיכֶםve/ET-av/de/KHEMand your menservantsוְאֶת־שִׁפְחוֹתֵיכֶםve/ET-shif/cho/te/KHEMand your maidservantsוְאֶת־בַּחוּרֵיכֶםve/ET-ba/chu/re/KHEMand your young menהַטּוֹבִיםhat/to/VIMthe bestוְאֶת־חֲמוֹרֵיכֶםve/ET-cha/mo/re/KHEMand your donkeysיִקָּחyik/KACHhe will takeוְעָשָׂהve/a/SAand put themלִמְלַאכְתּוֹ׃lim/lakh/TOto his work

    And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

17. 17

    צֹאנְכֶםtso/ne/KHEMyour flocksיַעְשֹׂרya/SORhe will take the tenth ofוְאַתֶּםve/at/TEMand youתִּהְיוּ־לוֹtih/YU-loshall be hisלַעֲבָדִים׃la/a/va/DIMservants

    He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

18. 18

    וּזְעַקְתֶּםu/ze/ak/TEMand you will cry outבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatמִלִּפְנֵיmil/lif/NEbecause ofמַלְכְּכֶםmal/ke/KHEMyour kingאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomבְּחַרְתֶּםbe/char/TEMyou have chosenלָכֶםla/KHEMfor yourselvesוְלֹא־יַעֲנֶהve/LO-ya/a/NEbut will not answerיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּא׃ha/HUthat

    And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

19. 19

    וַיְמָאֲנוּvay/ma/a/NUand refusedהָעָםha/AMthe peopleלִשְׁמֹעַlish/MO/ato hearken toבְּקוֹלbe/KOLthe voice ofשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidלֹּאlonoכִּיkibutאִם־מֶלֶךְim-ME/lekha kingיִהְיֶהyih/YEshall beעָלֵינוּ׃a/LE/nuover us

    Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

20. 20

    וְהָיִינוּve/ha/YI/nuthat may beגַם־אֲנַחְנוּgam-a/NACH/nuwe alsoכְּכׇל־הַגּוֹיִםke/KHOL-hag/go/YIMas all the nationsוּשְׁפָטָנוּu/she/fa/TA/nuand may judge usמַלְכֵּנוּmal/KE/nuour kingוְיָצָאve/ya/TSAand go outלְפָנֵינוּle/fa/NE/nubefore usוְנִלְחַםve/nil/CHAMand fightאֶת־מִלְחֲמֹתֵנוּ׃et-mil/cha/mo/TE/nuour battles

    That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

21. 21

    וַיִּשְׁמַעvay/yish/MAand heardשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelאֵת־כׇּל־דִּבְרֵיet-kol-div/REall the words ofהָעָםha/AMthe peopleוַיְדַבְּרֵםvay/dab/be/REMand he repeated themבְּאׇזְנֵיbe/oz/NEin the ears ofיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.

22. 22

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶל־שְׁמוּאֵלel-She/mu/ELto Samuelשְׁמַעshe/MAhearkenבְּקוֹלָםbe/ko/LAMto their voiceוְהִמְלַכְתָּve/him/lakh/TAand makeלָהֶםla/HEMfor themמֶלֶךְME/lekha kingוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelאֶל־אַנְשֵׁיel-an/SHEto the men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelלְכוּle/KHUgoאִישׁishevery manלְעִירוֹ׃le/i/ROto his city

    And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
