   And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;

   וַיִּשְׁבּוּvay/yish/BUand taken captiveאֶת־הַנָּשִׁיםet-han/na/SHIMthe womenאֲשֶׁר־בָּהּa/SHER-bawho were in itמִקָּטֹןmik/ka/TONfrom smallוְעַד־גָּדוֹלve/AD-ga/DOLto greatלֹאlonotהֵמִיתוּhe/MI/tuthey killedאִישׁishanyoneוַיִּנְהֲגוּvay/yin/ha/GUbut carried them offוַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand wentלְדַרְכָּם׃le/dar/KAMon their way

   And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.

   וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameדָוִדDa/VIDDavidוַאֲנָשָׁיוva/a/na/SHAYVand his menאֶל־הָעִירel-ha/IRto the cityוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdשְׂרוּפָהse/ru/FAit was burnedבָּאֵשׁba/ESHwith fireוּנְשֵׁיהֶםu/ne/she/HEMand their wivesוּבְנֵיהֶםu/ve/ne/HEMand their sonsוּבְנֹתֵיהֶםu/ve/no/te/HEMand their daughtersנִשְׁבּוּ׃nish/BUhad been taken captive

   So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.

   וַיִּשָּׂאvay/yis/SAthen lifted upדָוִדDa/VIDDavidוְהָעָםve/ha/AMand the peopleאֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹa/SHER-it/TOwho were with himאֶת־קוֹלָםet-ko/LAMtheir voicesוַיִּבְכּוּvay/yiv/KUand they weptעַדaduntilאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatאֵין־בָּהֶםen-ba/HEMthere was no more in themכֹּחַKO/achstrengthלִבְכּוֹת׃liv/KOTto weep

   Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.

   וּשְׁתֵּיush/TEand the twoנְשֵׁי־דָוִדne/SHE-Da/VIDthe wives of Davidנִשְׁבּוּnish/BUhad been taken captiveאֲחִינֹעַםA/chi/NO/amAhinoamהַיִּזְרְעֵלִיתhay/Yiz/re/e/LITthe Jezreeliteוַאֲבִיגַיִלva/A/vi/GA/yiland AbigailאֵשֶׁתE/shetthe wife ofנָבָלNa/VALNabalהַכַּרְמְלִי׃hak/Kar/me/LIthe Carmelite

   And David's two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

   וַתֵּצֶרvat/TE/tserand was distressedלְדָוִדLe/da/VIDDavidמְאֹדme/ODgreatlyכִּי־אָמְרוּki-a/me/RUfor spokeהָעָםha/AMthe peopleלְסׇקְלוֹle/sok/LOof stoning himכִּי־מָרָהki-ma/RAfor was bitterנֶפֶשׁNE/feshthe soul ofכׇּל־הָעָםkol-ha/AMall the peopleאִישׁishevery manעַל־בָּנָוal-ba/NAVfor his sonsוְעַל־בְּנֹתָיוve/AL-be/no/TAYVand for his daughtersוַיִּתְחַזֵּקvay/yit/chaz/ZEKbut strengthened himselfדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidבַּיהֹוָהba-Adonaiin the LORDאֱלֹהָיו׃e/lo/HAYVhis God

   And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶל־אֶבְיָתָרel-Ev/ya/TARto Abiatharהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestבֶּן־אֲחִימֶלֶךְben-A/chi/ME/lekhthe son of Ahimelechהַגִּישָׁה־נָּאhag/GI/sha-nabring I prayלִיlimeהָאֵפוֹדha/e/FODthe ephodוַיַּגֵּשׁvay/yag/GESHand broughtאֶבְיָתָרEv/ya/TARAbiatharאֶת־הָאֵפוֹדet-ha/e/FODthe ephodאֶל־דָּוִד׃el-Da/VIDto David

   And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.

   וַיִּשְׁאַלvay/yish/ALand inquiredדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidבַּיהֹוָהba-Adonaiof the LORDלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאֶרְדֹּףer/DOFshall I pursueאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהַגְּדוּד־הַזֶּהhag/ge/DUD-haz/ZEthis bandהַאַשִּׂגֶנּוּha/as/si/GEN/nushall I overtake themוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלוֹloto himרְדֹףre/DOFpursueכִּי־הַשֵּׂגki-has/SEGfor overtakeתַּשִּׂיגtas/SIGyou shall overtakeוְהַצֵּלve/hats/TSELand rescueתַּצִּיל׃tats/TSILyou shall rescue

   And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

   וַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidהוּאhuheוְשֵׁשׁ־מֵאוֹתve/SHESH-me/OTand six hundredאִישׁishmenאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereאִתּוֹit/TOwith himוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameעַד־נַחַלad-NA/chalto the brookהַבְּשׂוֹרhab/Be/SORthe Besorוְהַנּוֹתָרִיםve/han/no/ta/RIMwhere those left behindעָמָדוּ׃a/MA/dustayed

   So David went, he and the six hundred men that were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those that were left behind stayed.

    וַיִּרְדֹּףvay/yir/DOFbut pursuedדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidהוּאhuheוְאַרְבַּע־מֵאוֹתve/ar/BA-me/OTand four hundredאִישׁishmenוַיַּעַמְדוּvay/ya/am/DUfor stayed behindמָאתַיִםma/TA/yimtwo hundredאִישׁishmenאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoפִּגְּרוּpig/ge/RUwere too exhaustedמֵעֲבֹרme/a/VORto crossאֶת־נַחַלet-NA/chalthe brookהַבְּשׂוֹר׃hab/Be/SORthe Besor

    But David pursued, he and four hundred men: for two hundred abode behind, which were so faint that they could not go over the brook Besor.

    וַיִּמְצְאוּvay/yim/tse/Uand they foundאִישׁ־מִצְרִיish-Mits/RIan Egyptian manבַּשָּׂדֶהbas/sa/DEin the fieldוַיִּקְחוּvay/yik/CHUand broughtאֹתוֹo/TOhimאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDto Davidוַיִּתְּנוּ־לוֹvay/yit/te/NU-loand they gave himלֶחֶםLE/chembreadוַיֹּאכַלvay/YO/khaland he ateוַיַּשְׁקֻהוּvay/yash/KU/huand they gave him to drinkמָיִם׃MA/yimwater

    And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water;

12. 12

    וַיִּתְּנוּ־לוֹvay/yit/te/NU-loand they gave himפֶלַחFE/lacha piece ofדְּבֵלָהde/ve/LAa fig cakeוּשְׁנֵיu/she/NEand twoצִמֻּקִיםtsim/mu/KIMraisin cakesוַיֹּאכַלvay/YO/khaland he ateוַתָּשׇׁבvat/TA/shovand returnedרוּחוֹru/CHOhis spiritאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himכִּיkiforלֹא־אָכַלlo-A/khalhe had not eatenלֶחֶםLE/chemfoodוְלֹא־שָׁתָהve/LO-SHA/tanor drunkמַיִםMA/yimwaterשְׁלֹשָׁהshe/lo/SHAthreeיָמִיםya/MIMdaysוּשְׁלֹשָׁהu/she/lo/SHAand threeלֵילוֹת׃le/LOTnights

    And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלוֹloto himדָוִדDa/VIDDavidלְמִי־אַתָּהle/MI-AT/tato whom do you belongוְאֵיve/Eand whereמִזֶּהmiz/ZEfromאָתָּהAT/taare youוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidנַעַרNA/ara young manמִצְרִיMits/RIan Egyptianאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIam IעֶבֶדE/vedservantלְאִישׁle/ISHof a manעֲמָלֵקִיA/ma/le/KIAmalekiteוַיַּעַזְבֵנִיvay/ya/az/VE/niand left meאֲדֹנִיa/do/NImy lordכִּיkibecauseחָלִיתִיcha/LI/tiI fell sickהַיּוֹםhay/YOMtodayשְׁלֹשָׁה׃she/lo/SHAthree days

    And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days agone I fell sick.

    אֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweפָּשַׁטְנוּpa/SHAT/nuraidedנֶגֶבNE/gevthe Negev ofהַכְּרֵתִיhak/Ke/re/TIthe Cherethitesוְעַל־אֲשֶׁרve/AL-a/SHERand that which belongsלִיהוּדָהlI/hu/DAto Judahוְעַל־נֶגֶבve/AL-NE/gevand the Negev ofכָּלֵבKa/LEVCalebוְאֶת־צִקְלַגve/ET-tsik/LAGand Ziklagשָׂרַפְנוּsa/RAF/nuwe burnedבָאֵשׁ׃va/ESHwith fire

    We made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, and upon the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidהֲתוֹרִדֵנִיha/to/ri/DE/niwill you bring me downאֶל־הַגְּדוּדel-hag/ge/DUDto bandהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהִשָּׁבְעָהhish/SHAV/aswearלִּיlito meבֵאלֹהִיםve/lo/HIMby Godאִם־תְּמִיתֵנִיim-te/mi/TE/nithat you will not kill meוְאִם־תַּסְגִּרֵנִיve/IM-tas/gi/RE/ninor surrender meבְּיַד־אֲדֹנִיbe/YAD-a/do/NIinto the hand of my masterוְאוֹרִדְךָve/o/rid/KHAand I will bring you downאֶל־הַגְּדוּדel-hag/ge/DUDto bandהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to this company? And he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this company.

    וַיֹּרִדֵהוּvay/yo/ri/DE/huand when he brought him downוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdנְטֻשִׁיםne/tu/SHIMthey were spread outעַל־פְּנֵיal-pe/NEupon the face ofכׇל־הָאָרֶץkhol-ha/A/retsall the groundאֹכְלִיםokh/LIMeatingוְשֹׁתִיםve/sho/TIMand drinkingוְחֹגְגִיםve/chog/GIMand celebratingבְּכֹלbe/KHOLbecause of allהַשָּׁלָלhash/sha/LALthe spoilהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLgreatאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUthey had takenמֵאֶרֶץme/E/retsfrom the land ofפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesוּמֵאֶרֶץu/me/E/retsand from the land ofיְהוּדָה׃Ye/hu/DAJudah

    And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.

    וַיַּכֵּםvay/yak/KEMand struck themדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidמֵהַנֶּשֶׁףme/han/NE/sheffrom twilightוְעַד־הָעֶרֶבve/AD-ha/E/revuntil the eveningלְמׇחֳרָתָםle/mo/cho/ra/TAMof the next dayוְלֹא־נִמְלַטve/LO-nim/LATand not escapedמֵהֶםme/HEMof themאִישׁisha manכִּיkiexceptאִם־אַרְבַּעim-ar/BAfourמֵאוֹתme/OThundredאִישׁ־נַעַרish-NA/aryoung menאֲשֶׁר־רָכְבוּa/SHER-ra/khe/VUwho rodeעַל־הַגְּמַלִּיםal-hag/ge/mal/LIMupon the camelsוַיָּנֻסוּ׃vay/ya/NU/suand they fled

    And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled.

18. 18

    וַיַּצֵּלvay/yats/TSELand rescuedדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֵת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרet-kol-a/SHERall thatלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUhad takenעֲמָלֵקA/ma/LEKAmalekוְאֶת־שְׁתֵּיve/ET-shteand his twoנָשָׁיוna/SHAYVwivesהִצִּילhits/TSILrescuedדָּוִד׃Da/VIDDavid

    And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: and David rescued his two wives.

19. 19

    וְלֹאve/LOand notנֶעְדַּר־לָהֶםne/DAR-la/HEMwas missing to themמִן־הַקָּטֹןmin-hak/ka/TONsmallוְעַד־הַגָּדוֹלve/AD-hag/ga/DOLor greatוְעַד־בָּנִיםve/AD-ba/NIMsonsוּבָנוֹתu/va/NOTor daughtersוּמִשָּׁלָלu/mish/sha/LALor spoilוְעַדve/ADorכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרkol-a/SHERanything thatלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUthey had takenלָהֶםla/HEMfrom themהַכֹּלhak/KOLallהֵשִׁיבhe/SHIVbrought backדָּוִד׃Da/VIDDavid

    And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.

20. 20

    וַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶת־כׇּל־הַצֹּאןet-kol-hats/TSONall the sheepוְהַבָּקָרve/hab/ba/KARand the oxenנָהֲגוּna/ha/GUthey droveלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהַמִּקְנֶהham/mik/NElivestockהַהוּאha/HUthoseוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidזֶהzethisשְׁלַלshe/LALthe spoil ofדָּוִד׃Da/VIDDavid

    And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drave before those other cattle, and said, This is David's spoil.

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameדָוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶל־מָאתַיִםel-ma/TA/yimto two hundredהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menאֲשֶׁר־פִּגְּרוּa/SHER-pig/ge/RUwho had been too exhaustedמִלֶּכֶתmil/LE/khetto followאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterדָוִדDa/VIDDavidוַיֹּשִׁיבֻםvay/yo/shi/VUMwhom they had made stayבְּנַחַלbe/NA/chalat the brookהַבְּשׂוֹרhab/Be/SORthe Besorוַיֵּצְאוּvay/yets/Uand they went outלִקְרַאתlik/RATto meetדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidוְלִקְרַאתve/lik/RATand to meetהָעָםha/AMthe peopleאֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹa/SHER-it/TOwho were with himוַיִּגַּשׁvay/yig/GASHand approachedדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleוַיִּשְׁאַלvay/yish/ALand greetedלָהֶםla/HEMthemלְשָׁלוֹם׃le/sha/LOMin peace

    And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he saluted them.

    וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anthen answeredכׇּל־אִישׁ־רָעkol-ish-raall the wickedוּבְלִיַּעַלu/ve/liy/YA/aland worthless menמֵהָאֲנָשִׁיםme/ha/a/na/SHIMamong the menאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהָלְכוּha/le/KHUwentעִם־דָּוִדim-Da/VIDwith Davidוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidיַעַןYA/anbecauseאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹא־הָלְכוּlo-ha/le/KHUthey did not goעִמִּיim/MIwith meלֹא־נִתֵּןlo-nit/TENwe will not giveלָהֶםla/HEMto themמֵהַשָּׁלָלme/hash/sha/LALof the spoilאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהִצַּלְנוּhits/TSAL/nuwe have recoveredכִּי־אִם־אִישׁki-im-ishexcept to each manאֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹet-ish/TOhis wifeוְאֶת־בָּנָיוve/ET-ba/NAYVand his sonsוְיִנְהֲגוּve/yin/ha/GUthat they may lead them awayוְיֵלֵכוּ׃ve/ye/LE/khuand depart

    Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.

23. 23

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidלֹא־תַעֲשׂוּlo-ta/a/SUyou shall not doכֵןkhensoאֶחָיe/CHAYmy brothersאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־נָתַןet-a/SHER-na/TANwith what has givenיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDלָנוּLA/nuto usוַיִּשְׁמֹרvay/yish/MORwho has keptאֹתָנוּo/TA/nuusוַיִּתֵּןvay/yit/TENand gaveאֶת־הַגְּדוּדet-hag/ge/DUDthe troopהַבָּאhab/BAthat cameעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuagainst usבְּיָדֵנוּ׃be/ya/DE/nuinto our hand

    Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.

24. 24

    וּמִיu/MIand whoיִשְׁמַעyish/MAwill listenלָכֶםla/KHEMto youלַדָּבָרlad/da/VARin matterהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכִּיkiforכְּחֵלֶקke/CHE/lekas the share ofהַיֹּרֵדhay/yo/REDhe who goes downבַּמִּלְחָמָהbam/mil/cha/MAin the battleוּכְחֵלֶקu/khe/CHE/lekso shall be the share ofהַיֹּשֵׁבhay/yo/SHEVhe who staysעַל־הַכֵּלִיםal-hak/ke/LIMby the baggageיַחְדָּוyach/DAVtogetherיַחֲלֹקוּ׃ya/cha/LO/kuthey shall share

    For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passמֵהַיּוֹםme/hay/YOMfrom the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatוָמָעְלָהva/MA/laand onwardוַיְשִׂמֶהָvay/si/ME/hathat he made itלְחֹקle/CHOKa statuteוּלְמִשְׁפָּטu/le/mish/PATand an ordinanceלְיִשְׂרָאֵלle/Yis/ra/ELto Israelעַדadtoהַיּוֹםhay/YOMdayהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel unto this day.

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameדָוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶל־צִקְלַגel-Tsik/LAGto Ziklagוַיְשַׁלַּחvay/shal/LACHand sentמֵהַשָּׁלָלme/hash/sha/LALof the spoilלְזִקְנֵיle/zik/NEto the elders ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahלְרֵעֵהוּle/re/E/huto his friendsלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdלָכֶםla/KHEMfor youבְּרָכָהbe/ra/KHAa giftמִשְּׁלַלmish/she/LALof the spoil ofאֹיְבֵיoy/VEthe enemies ofיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of the LORD;

    לַאֲשֶׁרla/a/SHERto those inבְּבֵית־אֵלBe/VET-elBeth-elוְלַאֲשֶׁרve/la/a/SHERand to those inבְּרָמוֹת־נֶגֶבBe/ra/MOT-NE/gevRamoth of the Negevוְלַאֲשֶׁרve/la/a/SHERand to those inבְּיַתִּר׃Be/yat/TIRJattir

    To them which were in Beth-el, and to them which were in south Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir,

28. 28

    וְלַאֲשֶׁרve/la/a/SHERand to those inבַּעֲרֹעֵרBa/a/ro/ERAroerוְלַאֲשֶׁרve/la/a/SHERand to those inבְּשִׂפְמוֹתBe/sif/MOTSiphmothוְלַאֲשֶׁרve/la/a/SHERand to those inבְּאֶשְׁתְּמֹעַ׃Be/esh/te/MO/aEshtemoa

    And to them which were in Aroer, and to them which were in Siphmoth, and to them which were in Eshtemoa,

29. 29

    And to them which were in Rachal, and to them which were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to them which were in the cities of the Kenites,

    וְלַאֲשֶׁרve/la/a/SHERand to those inבְּחׇרְמָהBe/chor/MAHormahוְלַאֲשֶׁרve/la/a/SHERand to those inבְּבוֹר־עָשָׁןBe/VOR-a/SHANBor-ashanוְלַאֲשֶׁרve/la/a/SHERand to those inבַּעֲתָךְ׃Ba/a/TAKHAthach

    And to them which were in Hormah, and to them which were in Chor-ashan, and to them which were in Athach,

31. 31

    וְלַאֲשֶׁרve/la/a/SHERand to those inבְּחֶבְרוֹןBe/chev/RONHebronוּלְכׇל־הַמְּקֹמוֹתu/le/KHOL-ham/me/ko/MOTand to all the placesאֲשֶׁר־הִתְהַלֶּךְ־שָׁםa/SHER-hit/hal/LEKH-shamwhere had roamedדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidהוּאhuheוַאֲנָשָׁיו׃va/a/na/SHAYVand his men

    And to them which were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were wont to haunt.
