   Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:

   וְלוֹve/LOand he hadשְׁתֵּיshtetwoנָשִׁיםna/SHIMwivesשֵׁםshemthe name ofאַחַתa/CHATthe oneחַנָּהChan/NAHannahוְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the name ofהַשֵּׁנִיתhash/she/NITthe secondפְּנִנָּהPe/nin/NAPeninnahוַיְהִיvay/HIand there wereלִפְנִנָּהLif/nin/NAto Peninnahיְלָדִיםye/la/DIMchildrenוּלְחַנָּהu/Le/chan/NAand to Hannahאֵיןenthere were noיְלָדִים׃ye/la/DIMchildren

   And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

   And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passהַיּוֹםhay/YOMon the dayוַיִּזְבַּחvay/yiz/BACHthat sacrificedאֶלְקָנָהEl/ka/NAElkanahוְנָתַןve/na/TANhe gaveלִפְנִנָּהLif/nin/NAto Peninnahאִשְׁתּוֹish/TOhis wifeוּלְכׇל־בָּנֶיהָu/le/KHOL-ba/NE/haand to all her sonsוּבְנוֹתֶיהָu/ve/no/TE/haand her daughtersמָנוֹת׃ma/NOTportions

   And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:

   וּלְחַנָּהu/Le/chan/NAand to Hannahיִתֵּןyit/TENhe gaveמָנָהma/NAa portionאַחַתa/CHAToneאַפָּיִםap/PA/yimchoiceכִּיkiforאֶת־חַנָּהet-Chan/NAHannahאָהֵבa/HEVhe lovedוַיהֹוָהve-Adonaibut the LORDסָגַרsa/GARhad shutרַחְמָהּ׃rach/MAher womb

   But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.

6. 6

   וְכִעֲסַתָּהve/khi/a/SAT/taand provoked herצָרָתָהּtsa/ra/TAher rivalגַּם־כַּעַסgam-KA/asalso with vexationבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURin orderהַרְּעִמָהּhar/re/i/MAto make her fretכִּי־סָגַרki-sa/GARbecause had shutיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDבְּעַדbe/ADupרַחְמָהּ׃rach/MAher womb

   And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.

   וְכֵןve/KHENand soיַעֲשֶׂהya/a/SEhe didשָׁנָהsha/NAyearבְשָׁנָהve/sha/NAby yearמִדֵּיmid/DEas often asעֲלֹתָהּa/lo/TAshe went upבְּבֵיתbe/VETto the house ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDכֵּןkensoתַּכְעִסֶנָּהtakh/i/SEN/nashe provoked herוַתִּבְכֶּהvat/tiv/KEand she weptוְלֹאve/LOand notתֹאכַל׃to/KHALwould she eat

   And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלָהּlato herאֶלְקָנָהEl/ka/NAElkanahאִישָׁהּi/SHAher husbandחַנָּהChan/NAHannahלָמֶהLA/mewhyתִבְכִּיtiv/KIdo you weepוְלָמֶהve/LA/meand whyלֹאlonotתֹאכְלִיto/khe/LIdo you eatוְלָמֶהve/LA/meand whyיֵרַעye/RAis sadלְבָבֵךְle/va/VEKHyour heartהֲלוֹאha/LOam notאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIIטוֹבtovbetterלָךְlakhto youמֵעֲשָׂרָהme/a/sa/RAmore than tenבָּנִים׃ba/NIMsons

   Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?

   וַתָּקׇםvat/TA/komand she aroseחַנָּהChan/NAHannahאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterאׇכְלָהֿokh/LAthey had eatenבְשִׁלֹהve/Shi/LOin Shilohוְאַחֲרֵיve/a/cha/REand afterשָׁתֹהsha/TOdrinkingוְעֵלִיve/E/LIand Eliהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestיֹשֵׁבyo/SHEVwas sittingעַל־הַכִּסֵּאal-hak/kis/SEon the seatעַל־מְזוּזַתal-me/zu/ZATby the doorpost ofהֵיכַלhe/KHALthe temple ofיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

   So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.

10. 10

    וְהִיאve/HIand sheמָרַתMA/ratwas bitter ofנָפֶשׁNA/feshsoulוַתִּתְפַּלֵּלvat/tit/pal/LELand she prayedעַל־יְהֹוָהal-Adonaito the LORDוּבָכֹהu/va/KHOand weepתִבְכֶּה׃tiv/KEshe wept

    And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.

11. 11

    וַתִּדֹּרvat/tid/DORand she vowedנֶדֶרNE/dera vowוַתֹּאמַרvat/to/MARand saidיְהֹוָהAdonaiO LORDצְבָאוֹתtse/va/OTof hostsאִם־רָאֹהim-ra/Oif lookתִרְאֶהtir/EYou will lookבׇּעֳנִיbo/o/NIon the affliction ofאֲמָתֶךָa/ma/TE/khaYour handmaidוּזְכַרְתַּנִיu/ze/khar/TA/niand remember meוְלֹא־תִשְׁכַּחve/LO-tish/KACHand not forgetאֶת־אֲמָתֶךָet-a/ma/TE/khaYour handmaidוְנָתַתָּהve/na/tat/TAand will giveלַאֲמָתְךָla/a/ma/te/KHAto Your handmaidזֶרַעZE/raseed ofאֲנָשִׁיםa/na/SHIMmenוּנְתַתִּיוu/ne/tat/TIVand I will give himלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDכׇּל־יְמֵיkol-ye/MEall the days ofחַיָּיוchay/YAYVhis lifeוּמוֹרָהu/mo/RAand a razorלֹא־יַעֲלֶהlo-ya/a/LEshall not comeעַל־רֹאשׁוֹ׃al-ro/SHOupon his head

    And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

12. 12

    וְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it came to passכִּיkiasהִרְבְּתָהhir/be/TAshe continuedלְהִתְפַּלֵּלle/hit/pal/LELto prayלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוְעֵלִיve/E/LIand Eliשֹׁמֵרsho/MERwatchedאֶת־פִּיהָ׃et-PI/haher mouth

    And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.

13. 13

    וְחַנָּהve/Chan/NAand Hannahהִיאhisheמְדַבֶּרֶתme/dab/BE/retwas speakingעַל־לִבָּהּal-lib/BAin her heartרַקrakonlyשְׂפָתֶיהָse/fa/TE/haher lipsנָּעוֹתna/OTmovedוְקוֹלָהּve/ko/LAand her voiceלֹאlonotיִשָּׁמֵעַyish/sha/ME/awas heardוַיַּחְשְׁבֶהָvay/yach/she/VE/haand thought herעֵלִיE/LIEliלְשִׁכֹּרָה׃le/shik/ko/RAa drunken woman

    Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

14. 14

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלֶיהָe/LE/hato herעֵלִיE/LIEliעַד־מָתַיad-ma/TAYhow longתִּשְׁתַּכָּרִיןtish/tak/ka/RINwill you be drunkenהָסִירִיha/SI/riput awayאֶת־יֵינֵךְet-ye/NEKHyour wineמֵעָלָיִךְ׃me/a/LA/yikhfrom you

    And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

15. 15

    וַתַּעַןvat/TA/anand answeredחַנָּהChan/NAHannahוַתֹּאמֶרvat/TO/merand saidלֹאlonoאֲדֹנִיa/do/NImy lordאִשָּׁהish/SHAa womanקְשַׁת־רוּחַke/SHAT-RU/achhard of spiritאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIam Iוְיַיִןve/YA/yinand wineוְשֵׁכָרve/she/KHARand strong drinkלֹאlonotשָׁתִיתִיsha/TI/tihave I drunkוָאֶשְׁפֹּךְva/esh/POKHbut I have poured outאֶת־נַפְשִׁיet-naf/SHImy soulלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

16. 16

    אַל־תִּתֵּןal-tit/TENdo not countאֶת־אֲמָתְךָet-a/ma/te/KHAyour handmaidלִפְנֵיlif/NEasבַּת־בְּלִיָּעַלbat-be/liy/YA/ala daughter of worthlessnessכִּי־מֵרֹבki-me/ROVfor out of the abundance ofשִׂיחִיsi/CHImy complaintוְכַעְסִיve/kha/SIand my griefדִּבַּרְתִּיdib/BAR/tiI have spokenעַד־הֵנָּה׃ad-HEN/nauntil now

    Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

17. 17

    וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anand he answeredעֵלִיE/LIEliוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלְכִיle/KHIgoלְשָׁלוֹםle/sha/LOMin peaceוֵאלֹהֵיve/lo/HEand the God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelיִתֵּןyit/TENgrantאֶת־שֵׁלָתֵךְet-she/la/TEKHyour petitionאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatשָׁאַלְתְּsha/ALTyou have askedמֵעִמּוֹ׃me/im/MOof Him

    Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

18. 18

    וַתֹּאמֶרvat/TO/merand saidתִּמְצָאtim/TSAlet findשִׁפְחָתְךָshif/cha/te/KHAyour handmaidחֵןchenfavorבְּעֵינֶיךָbe/e/NE/khain your eyesוַתֵּלֶךְvat/TE/lekhand she wentהָאִשָּׁהha/ish/SHAthe womanלְדַרְכָּהּle/dar/KAon her wayוַתֹּאכַלvat/TO/khaland ateוּפָנֶיהָu/fa/NE/haand her countenanceלֹא־הָיוּ־לָהּlo-ha/YU-lawere not to herעוֹד׃odanymore

    And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

19. 19

    וַיַּשְׁכִּמוּvay/yash/KI/muand they rose earlyבַבֹּקֶרvab/BO/kerin the morningוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּvay/yish/ta/cha/VUand worshipedלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוַיָּשֻׁבוּvay/ya/SHU/vuand they returnedוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameאֶל־בֵּיתָםel-be/TAMto their houseהָרָמָתָהha/Ra/MA/tato Ramahוַיֵּדַעvay/YE/daand knewאֶלְקָנָהEl/ka/NAElkanahאֶת־חַנָּהet-Chan/NAHannahאִשְׁתּוֹish/TOhis wifeוַיִּזְכְּרֶהָvay/yiz/ke/RE/haand remembered herיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

20. 20

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passלִתְקֻפוֹתlit/ku/FOTat the turn ofהַיָּמִיםhay/ya/MIMthe daysוַתַּהַרvat/TA/harand she conceivedחַנָּהChan/NAHannahוַתֵּלֶדvat/TE/ledand boreבֵּןbena sonוַתִּקְרָאvat/tik/RAand she calledאֶת־שְׁמוֹet-she/MOhis nameשְׁמוּאֵלShe/mu/ELSamuelכִּיkibecauseמֵיְהֹוָהme-Adonaiof the LORDשְׁאִלְתִּיו׃she/il/TIVI have asked him

    Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.

21. 21

    וַיַּעַלvay/YA/aland went upהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manאֶלְקָנָהEl/ka/NAElkanahוְכׇל־בֵּיתוֹve/KHOL-be/TOand all his houseלִזְבֹּחַliz/BO/achto offerלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDאֶת־זֶבַחet-ZE/vachthe sacrifice ofהַיָּמִיםhay/ya/MIMthe yearוְאֶת־נִדְרוֹ׃ve/ET-nid/ROand his vow

    And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.

22. 22

    וְחַנָּהve/Chan/NAand Hannahלֹאlonotעָלָתָהa/LA/tawent upכִּי־אָמְרָהki-a/me/RAfor she saidלְאִישָׁהּle/i/SHAto her husbandעַדaduntilיִגָּמֵלyig/ga/MELis weanedהַנַּעַרhan/NA/arthe childוַהֲבִאֹתִיוva/ha/vi/o/TIVand then I will bring himוְנִרְאָהve/nir/Athat he may appearאֶת־פְּנֵיet-pe/NEbeforeיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDוְיָשַׁבve/ya/SHAVand abideשָׁםshamthereעַד־עוֹלָם׃ad-o/LAMforever

    But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלָהּlato herאֶלְקָנָהEl/ka/NAElkanahאִישָׁהּi/SHAher husbandעֲשִׂיa/SIdoהַטּוֹבhat/TOVwhat is goodבְּעֵינַיִךְbe/e/NA/yikhin your eyesשְׁבִיshe/VIstayעַד־גׇּמְלֵךְad-gom/LEKHuntil you have weanedאֹתוֹo/TOhimאַךְakhonlyיָקֵםya/KEMmay establishיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֶת־דְּבָרוֹet-de/va/ROHis wordוַתֵּשֶׁבvat/TE/shevso remainedהָאִשָּׁהha/ish/SHAthe womanוַתֵּינֶקvat/TE/nekand nursedאֶת־בְּנָהּet-be/NAher sonעַד־גׇּמְלָהּad-gom/LAuntil she had weanedאֹתוֹ׃o/TOhim

    And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.

24. 24

    וַתַּעֲלֵהוּvat/ta/a/LE/huand she took him upעִמָּהּim/MAwith herכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenגְּמָלַתּוּge/ma/LAT/tushe had weaned himבְּפָרִיםbe/fa/RIMwith bullsשְׁלֹשָׁהshe/lo/SHAthreeוְאֵיפָהve/e/FAand an ephahאַחַתa/CHAToneקֶמַחKE/machof flourוְנֵבֶלve/NE/veland a skin ofיַיִןYA/yinwineוַתְּבִאֵהוּvat/te/vi/E/huand brought himבֵית־יְהֹוָהvet-Adonaito the house of the LORDשִׁלוֹShi/LOin Shilohוְהַנַּעַרve/han/NA/arand the childנָעַר׃NA/arwas young

    And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.

25. 25

    וַיִּשְׁחֲטוּvay/yish/cha/TUand they slaughteredאֶת־הַפָּרet-hap/PARthe bullוַיָּבִאוּvay/ya/VI/uand they broughtאֶת־הַנַּעַרet-han/NA/arthe childאֶל־עֵלִי׃el-E/LIto Eli

    And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.

26. 26

    וַתֹּאמֶרvat/TO/merand saidבִּיbiOאֲדֹנִיa/do/NImy lordחֵיcheas livesנַפְשְׁךָnaf/she/KHAyour soulאֲדֹנִיa/do/NImy lordאֲנִיa/NII amהָאִשָּׁהha/ish/SHAthe womanהַנִּצֶּבֶתhan/nits/TSE/vetwho stoodעִמְּכָהim/me/KHAby youבָּזֶהba/ZEhereלְהִתְפַּלֵּלle/hit/pal/LELto prayאֶל־יְהֹוָה׃el-Adonaito the LORD

    And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.

27. 27

    אֶל־הַנַּעַרel-han/NA/arfor the childהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisהִתְפַּלָּלְתִּיhit/pal/LAL/tiI prayedוַיִּתֵּןvay/yit/TENand has givenיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDלִיlito meאֶת־שְׁאֵלָתִיet-she/e/la/TImy petitionאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichשָׁאַלְתִּיsha/AL/tiI askedמֵעִמּוֹ׃me/im/MOof Him

    For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

28. 28

    וְגַםve/GAMtherefore alsoאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIIהִשְׁאִלְתִּהוּhish/il/TI/huhave lent himלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDכׇּל־הַיָּמִיםkol-hay/ya/MIMall the daysאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהָיָהha/YAhe livesהוּאhuheשָׁאוּלsha/ULis lentלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaito the LORDוַיִּשְׁתַּחוּvay/yish/TA/chuand he worshipedשָׁםshamthereלַיהֹוָה׃la-Adonaito the LORD

    Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
