   אַל־תִּתְהַלֵּלboast not yourselfבְּיוֹםin the day ofמָחָרon the morrowכִּיforלֹא־תֵדַעnot you will knowמַה־יֵּלֶדwhat will it bring forthיוֹם׃day

   Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

   יְהַלֶּלְךָlet praise youזָרa strangerוְלֹא־פִיךָand not your own mouthנׇכְרִיstrangeוְאַל־שְׂפָתֶיךָ׃and not your own lips

   Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

   כֹּבֶד־אֶבֶןa stone is heavyוְנֵטֶלand the weight ofהַחוֹלthe sandוְכַעַסand the provocation ofאֱוִילfoolכָּבֵדheavyמִשְּׁנֵיהֶם׃more than both of them

   A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both.

   אַכְזְרִיּוּתis cruelחֵמָהwrathוְשֶׁטֶףis outrageousאָףangerוּמִיand whosoיַעֲמֹדshall standלִפְנֵיbeforeקִנְאָה׃jealousy

   Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

   טוֹבָהgoodתּוֹכַחַתrebukeמְגֻלָּהuncoveredמֵאַהֲבָהmore than the loveמְסֻתָּרֶת׃hidden

   Open rebuke is better than secret love.

6. 6

   נֶאֱמָנִיםfaithfulפִּצְעֵיthe wounds ofאוֹהֵבa friendוְנַעְתָּרוֹתand are deceitfulנְשִׁיקוֹתthe kisses ofשׂוֹנֵא׃one who hates

   Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

   נֶפֶשׁsoulשְׂבֵעָהsatisfiedתָּבוּסloathesנֹפֶתa honeycombוְנֶפֶשׁand soulרְעֵבָהhungryכׇּל־מַרevery bitter thingמָתוֹק׃sweet

   The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

   כְּצִפּוֹרlike a birdנוֹדֶדֶתwhich wandersמִן־קִנָּהּfrom its nestכֵּן־אִישׁthus man ofנוֹדֵדwho wandersמִמְּקוֹמוֹ׃from its place

   As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

   שֶׁמֶןoilוּקְטֹרֶתand the incense ofיְשַׂמַּח־לֵבrejoice the heartוּמֶתֶקand sweetness ofרֵעֵהוּof a man's friendמֵעֲצַת־נָפֶשׁ׃by hearty counsel

   Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

    רֵעֲךָyour neighbor(ורעה)[וְרֵעַ]and the friend ofאָבִיךָyour fatherאַל־תַּעֲזֹבforsake notוּבֵיתand house ofאָחִיךָyour brotherאַל־תָּבוֹאgo notבְּיוֹםin the day ofאֵידֶךָyour calamityטוֹבgoodשָׁכֵןis a neighborקָרוֹבnearמֵאָחfrom a brotherרָחוֹק׃far

    Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

    חֲכַםbe wiseבְּנִיmy sonוְשַׂמַּחand make gladלִבִּיmy heartוְאָשִׁיבָהthat I may answerחֹרְפִיthe one who taunts meדָבָר׃a word

    My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.

12. 12

    עָרוּםcunningרָאָהhe sawרָעָהevilנִסְתָּרhides himselfפְּתָאיִםthe simpleעָבְרוּpassedנֶעֱנָשׁוּ׃they are punished

    A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

    קַח־בִּגְדוֹtake his garmentכִּי־עָרַבbecause he stood surety forזָרa strangerוּבְעַדand forנׇכְרִיָּהforeignחַבְלֵהוּ׃hold in pledge it

    Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

14. 14

    מְבָרֵךְone who blessesרֵעֵהוּhis neighborבְּקוֹלwith a voiceגָּדוֹלgreatבַּבֹּקֶרin the morningהַשְׁכֵּיםrising earlyקְלָלָהa curseתֵּחָשֶׁבit is reckonedלוֹ׃to him

    He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

15. 15

    דֶּלֶףa drippingטוֹרֵדcontinuousבְּיוֹםin the day ofסַגְרִירpersistent rainוְאֵשֶׁתand the wife of(מדונים)[מִדְיָנִים]contentionsנִשְׁתָּוָה׃she is like

    A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

16. 16

    צֹפְנֶיהָwhoever hides herצָפַן־רוּחַhides the windוְשֶׁמֶןand oil ofיְמִינוֹhis right handיִקְרָא׃bewrays itself

    Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself.

17. 17

    בַּרְזֶלironבְּבַרְזֶלin ironיָחַדsharpensוְאִישׁand a manיַחַדsharpensפְּנֵי־רֵעֵהוּ׃face of his neighbor

    Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

18. 18

    נֹצֵרmaintainingתְּאֵנָהa fig treeיֹאכַלhe shall eatפִּרְיָהּits fruitוְשֹׁמֵרand keepingאֲדֹנָיוhis masterיְכֻבָּד׃he is honored

    Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.

19. 19

    כַּמַּיִםas the watersהַפָּנִיםthe faceלַפָּנִיםto the faceכֵּןthusלֵב־הָאָדָםthe heart of manלָאָדָם׃for man

    As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.

20. 20

    שְׁאוֹלSheolוַאֲבַדֹּהand destructionלֹאnotתִשְׂבַּעְנָהthey are satisfiedוְעֵינֵיand the eyes ofהָאָדָםthe manלֹאnotתִשְׂבַּעְנָה׃they are satisfied

    Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

21. 21

    מַצְרֵףa crucibleלַכֶּסֶףof the silverוְכוּרand a smelting furnaceלַזָּהָבto the goldוְאִישׁand a manלְפִיaccording toמַהֲלָלוֹ׃his praise

    As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.

22. 22

    אִם־תִּכְתּוֹשׁ־אֶת־הָאֱוִילif you will pound the foolבַּמַּכְתֵּשׁin the mortarבְּתוֹךְamongהָרִיפוֹתthe grainבַּעֱלִיwith the pestleלֹא־תָסוּרwill not departמֵעָלָיוfrom with himאִוַּלְתּוֹ׃his foolishness

    Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

    יָדֹעַdiligentlyתֵּדַעyou knowפְּנֵיface ofצֹאנֶךָyour flockשִׁיתsetלִבְּךָyour heartלַעֲדָרִים׃to the herds

    Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.

24. 24

    כִּיforלֹאnotלְעוֹלָםforeverחֹסֶןwealthוְאִם־נֵזֶרand does the crownלְדוֹרto generation(דור)[וָדוֹר]׃and a generation

    For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?

25. 25

    גָּלָהappearsחָצִירthe hayוְנִרְאָה־דֶשֶׁאand the tender grass shows itselfוְנֶאֶסְפוּand gatheredעִשְּׂבוֹתthe vegetation ofהָרִים׃mountains

    The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.

26. 26

    כְּבָשִׂיםlambsלִלְבוּשֶׁךָfor your clothingוּמְחִירand the price ofשָׂדֶהfieldעַתּוּדִים׃he goats

    The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.

27. 27

    וְדֵיand a sufficiency ofחֲלֵבthe milk ofעִזִּיםgoatsלְלַחְמְךָfor your foodלְלֶחֶםfor the bread ofבֵּיתֶךָyour houseוְחַיִּיםand maintenanceלְנַעֲרוֹתֶיךָ׃for your girls

    And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.
