1. 1

   טוֹב־רָשׁbetter is the poorהוֹלֵךְgoingבְּתֻמּוֹin his integrityמֵעִקֵּשׁthan he who is perverse ofשְׂפָתָיוhis lipsוְהוּאand heכְסִיל׃a fool

   Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

2. 2

   גַּםalsoבְּלֹא־דַעַתwithout knowledgeנֶפֶשׁsoulלֹא־טוֹבnot goodוְאָץand one who hastensבְּרַגְלַיִםwith feetחוֹטֵא׃a sinner

   Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

   אִוֶּלֶתfoolishnessאָדָםmanתְּסַלֵּףit subvertsדַּרְכּוֹhis wayוְעַל־יְהֹוָהand upon the LORDיִזְעַףshall rageלִבּוֹ׃his heart

   The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.

   הוֹןwealthיֹסִיףhe will increaseרֵעִיםfriendsרַבִּיםmanyוְדָלand a poor personמֵרֵעֵהוּfrom his neighborיִפָּרֵד׃is separated

   Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

5. 5

   עֵדwitnessשְׁקָרִיםliesלֹאnotיִנָּקֶהhe will go unpunishedוְיָפִיחַand he may breathe outכְּזָבִיםliesלֹאnotיִמָּלֵט׃shall be delivered

   A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

6. 6

   רַבִּיםmanyיְחַלּוּthey will entreatפְנֵי־נָדִיבthe favor of the princeוְכׇל־הָרֵעַand every man is a friendלְאִישׁfor a manמַתָּן׃a gift

   Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

   כׇּל־אֲחֵי־רָשׁall the brethren of the poorשְׂנֵאֻהוּthey hate himאַףmoreoverכִּיforמְרֵעֵהוּhis friendsרָחֲקוּthey are distantמִמֶּנּוּfrom himמְרַדֵּףone who pursuesאֲמָרִיםwords(לא)[לוֹ־]הֵמָּה׃to him they are

   All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.

8. 8

   קֹנֶה־לֵּבhe who gets wisdomאֹהֵבlovesנַפְשׁוֹhis soulשֹׁמֵרwho keepsתְּבוּנָהunderstandingלִמְצֹא־טוֹב׃to find good

   He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.

9. 9

   עֵדwitnessשְׁקָרִיםliesלֹאnotיִנָּקֶהhe will go unpunishedוְיָפִיחַand he may breathe outכְּזָבִיםliesיֹאבֵד׃does perish

   A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

10. 10

    לֹא־נָאוֶהnot is suitableלִכְסִילfor a foolתַּעֲנוּגluxuryאַףmoreoverכִּי־לְעֶבֶדbecause for a servantמְשֹׁלto have ruleבְּשָׂרִים׃over princes

    Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

11. 11

    שֵׂכֶלinsightאָדָםmanהֶאֱרִיךְdefersאַפּוֹhis angerוְתִפְאַרְתּוֹand his splendorעֲבֹרto pass overעַל־פָּשַׁע׃a transgression

    The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

12. 12

    נַהַםis a roaringכַּכְּפִירlike the young lionזַעַףthe rage ofמֶלֶךְthe king ofוּכְטַלand is like dewעַל־עֵשֶׂבupon herbרְצוֹנוֹ׃his favor

    The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

13. 13

    הַוֺּתthe calamity ofלְאָבִיוunto his fatherבֵּןa sonכְּסִילfoolishוְדֶלֶףand are a drippingטֹרֵדcontinuousמִדְיְנֵיthe contentions ofאִשָּׁה׃a woman

    A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

14. 14

    בַּיִתhouseוָהוֹןand wealthנַחֲלַתthe inheritance ofאָבוֹתthe fathersוּמֵיְהֹוָהand from the LORDאִשָּׁהa womanמַשְׂכָּלֶת׃prudent

    House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.

15. 15

    עַצְלָהlazinessתַּפִּילcasts intoתַּרְדֵּמָהdeep sleepוְנֶפֶשׁand soulרְמִיָּהidleתִרְעָב׃shall suffer hunger

    Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

16. 16

    שֹׁמֵרwho keepsמִצְוָהcommandmentשֹׁמֵרwho keepsנַפְשׁוֹhis soulבּוֹזֵהthe one who despisesדְרָכָיוhis ways(יומת)[יָמוּת]׃shall die

    He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.

17. 17

    מַלְוֵהis lending toיְהֹוָהthe LORDחוֹנֵןis showing favorדָּלthe poorוּגְמֻלוֹand his recompenseיְשַׁלֶּם־לוֹ׃he repays him

    He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

18. 18

    יַסֵּרdisciplineבִּנְךָyour sonכִּי־יֵשׁthat there isתִּקְוָהhopeוְאֶל־הֲמִיתוֹand on his destructionאַל־תִּשָּׂאdo not setנַפְשֶׁךָ׃your soul

    Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

19. 19

    (גרל)[גְּדׇל־]חֵמָהgreat of angerנֹשֵׂאbearingעֹנֶשׁpunishmentכִּיforאִם־תַּצִּילif you deliverוְעוֹדand againתּוֹסִף׃you must do it

    A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.

20. 20

    שְׁמַעhearkenעֵצָהcounselוְקַבֵּלand receivedמוּסָרdisciplineלְמַעַןin order thatתֶּחְכַּםyou may become wiseבְּאַחֲרִיתֶךָ׃in your end

    Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

21. 21

    רַבּוֹתmanyמַחֲשָׁבוֹתdevicesבְּלֶב־אִישׁin the heart of man ofוַעֲצַתand the plan ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDהִיאit isתָקוּם׃shall stand

    There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

22. 22

    תַּאֲוַתdesire ofאָדָםmanחַסְדּוֹhis kindnessוְטוֹב־רָשׁand better is a poor manמֵאִישׁthan a man ofכָּזָב׃a lie

    The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

23. 23

    יִרְאַתthe fear ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDלְחַיִּיםto lifeוְשָׂבֵעַand satisfiedיָלִיןhe shall abideבַּל־יִפָּקֶדnot he will be visitedרָע׃evil

    The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

24. 24

    טָמַןhe laidעָצֵלthe sluggardיָדוֹhis handבַּצַּלָּחַתin the dishגַּם־אֶל־פִּיהוּalso to his mouthלֹאnotיְשִׁיבֶנָּה׃shall turn it back

    A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

25. 25

    לֵץscornerתַּכֶּהsmiteוּפֶתִיand the simpleיַעְרִםwill bewareוְהוֹכִיחַand reproveלְנָבוֹןto a discerning personיָבִיןhe will understandדָּעַת׃knowledge

    Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

26. 26

    מְשַׁדֶּד־אָבone who assaults fatherיַבְרִיחַchases awayאֵםmother ofבֵּןa sonמֵבִישׁwho causes shameוּמַחְפִּיר׃and brings reproach

    He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

27. 27

    חֲדַל־בְּנִיcease my sonלִשְׁמֹעַto hearמוּסָרdisciplineלִשְׁגוֹתthat causes to errמֵאִמְרֵי־דָעַת׃from the utterances of knowledge

    Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

28. 28

    עֵדwitnessבְּלִיַּעַלBelialיָלִיץscornsמִשְׁפָּטjudgmentוּפִיand the mouth ofרְשָׁעִיםwicked menיְבַלַּע־אָוֶן׃it swallows up iniquity

    An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.

29. 29

    נָכוֹנוּare preparedלַלֵּצִיםthe mockersשְׁפָטִיםacts of judgmentוּמַהֲלֻמוֹתand blowsלְגֵוfor the back ofכְּסִילִים׃fools

    Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.
