Lamentations 5 אֵיכָה פרק ה׳

   זְכֹרrememberיְהֹוָהthe LORDמֶה־הָיָהwhat wasלָנוּto us(הביט)[הַבִּיטָה]the pay attentionוּרְאֵהand beholdאֶת־חֶרְפָּתֵנוּ׃our reproach

   Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.

2. 2

   נַחֲלָתֵנוּour inheritanceנֶהֶפְכָהit has been turned overלְזָרִיםto strangersבָּתֵּינוּour housesלְנׇכְרִים׃to foreigners

   Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens.

3. 3

   יְתוֹמִיםfatherless onesהָיִינוּwe were(אין)[וְאֵין]and there is noאָבfatherאִמֹּתֵינוּour mothersכְּאַלְמָנוֹת׃are like widows

   We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows.

4. 4

   מֵימֵינוּour waterבְּכֶסֶףin moneyשָׁתִינוּwe have drunkעֵצֵינוּour woodבִּמְחִירfor a priceיָבֹאוּ׃come

   We have drunken our water for money; our wood is sold unto us.

5. 5

   עַלuponצַוָּארֵנוּour neckנִרְדָּפְנוּwe have been pursuedיָגַעְנוּwe toiled(לא)[וְלֹא]and notהוּנַח־לָנוּ׃it has been given rest us

   Our necks are under persecution: we labour, and have no rest.

6. 6

   מִצְרַיִםEgyptנָתַנּוּwe have givenיָדthe handאַשּׁוּרAssyriaלִשְׂבֹּעַto be satisfiedלָחֶם׃food

   We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread.

7. 7

   אֲבֹתֵינוּour fathersחָטְאוּsinned(אינם)[וְאֵינָם]and they are not(אנחנו)[וַאֲנַחְנוּ]and we areעֲוֺנֹתֵיהֶםtheir iniquitiesסָבָלְנוּ׃we have borne

   Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.

   עֲבָדִיםservantsמָשְׁלוּreignבָנוּagainst usפֹּרֵקone who deliversאֵיןthere is noמִיָּדָם׃out of their hands

   Servants have ruled over us: there is none that doth deliver us out of their hand.

9. 9

   בְּנַפְשֵׁנוּwith our lifeנָבִיאwe bring inלַחְמֵנוּour own breadמִפְּנֵיbecause ofחֶרֶבthe sword ofהַמִּדְבָּר׃the wilderness

   We gat our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.

    עוֹרֵנוּour skinכְּתַנּוּרlike a furnace ofנִכְמָרוּthey have grown hotמִפְּנֵיbecause ofזַלְעֲפוֹתthe burning heat ofרָעָב׃hunger

    Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine.

11. 11

    נָשִׁיםwomenבְּצִיּוֹןin Zionעִנּוּthey abusedבְּתֻלֹתvirginsבְּעָרֵיin the cities ofיְהוּדָה׃Judah

    They ravished the women in Zion, and the maids in the cities of Judah.

12. 12

    שָׂרִיםprincesבְּיָדָםinto their handsנִתְלוּthey have been hangedפְּנֵיface ofזְקֵנִיםeldersלֹאnotנֶהְדָּרוּ׃they have been honored

    Princes are hanged up by their hand: the faces of elders were not honoured.

13. 13

    בַּחוּרִיםthe young menטְחוֹןto grindנָשָׂאוּthey lifted upוּנְעָרִיםand youngבָּעֵץunder the woodכָּשָׁלוּ׃they will stumble

    They took the young men to grind, and the children fell under the wood.

14. 14

    זְקֵנִיםeldersמִשַּׁעַרfrom gateשָׁבָתוּthey have ceasedבַּחוּרִיםthe young menמִנְּגִינָתָם׃from their music

    The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their musick.

15. 15

    שָׁבַתis ceasedמְשׂוֹשׂthe joy ofלִבֵּנוּour heartנֶהְפַּךְit was changedלְאֵבֶלmourningמְחֹלֵנוּ׃our dancing

    The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.

16. 16

    נָפְלָהfellעֲטֶרֶתcrown ofרֹאשֵׁנוּour headאוֹי־נָאwoe be I prayלָנוּto usכִּיthatחָטָאנוּ׃we have sinned

    The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned!

17. 17

    עַל־זֶהupon thisהָיָהwasדָוֶהfaintלִבֵּנוּour heartעַל־אֵלֶּהupon theseחָשְׁכוּthey have grown dimעֵינֵינוּ׃our eyes

    For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim.

18. 18

    עַלuponהַר־צִיּוֹןmount Zionשֶׁשָּׁמֵםthat is desolateשׁוּעָלִיםfoxesהִלְּכוּ־בוֹ׃they walk upon it

    Because of the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it.

19. 19

    אַתָּהyouיְהֹוָהthe LORDלְעוֹלָםforeverתֵּשֵׁבshall sitכִּסְאֲךָYour throneלְדוֹרto generationוָדוֹר׃to generation

    Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation.

20. 20

    לָמָּהwhyלָנֶצַחforeverתִּשְׁכָּחֵנוּdo you forget usתַּעַזְבֵנוּdo you abandon usלְאֹרֶךְto length ofיָמִים׃days

    Wherefore dost thou forget us for ever, and forsake us so long time?

21. 21

    הֲשִׁיבֵנוּrestore usיְהֹוָהthe LORDאֵלֶיךָto you(ונשוב)[וְנָשׁוּבָה]so let us returnחַדֵּשׁrenewיָמֵינוּour daysכְּקֶדֶם׃like long ago

    Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.

22. 22

    כִּיbecauseאִם־מָאֹסif to refuseמְאַסְתָּנוּyou have rejected usקָצַפְתָּyou were angryעָלֵינוּover usעַד־מְאֹד׃exceedingly

    But thou hast utterly rejected us; thou art very wroth against us.
