1. 1

   וּבִשְׁנֵים־עָשָׂרand on the twelfthחֹדֶשׁa month ofהוּא־חֹדֶשׁit is a month ofאֲדָרAdarבִּשְׁלוֹשָׁה־עָשָׂרon the thirteenthיוֹםdayבּוֹin itאֲשֶׁרwhichהִגִּיעַcome hasדְּבַר־הַמֶּלֶךְword of the kingוְדָתוֹand his ordersלְהֵעָשׂוֹתto be acted uponבַּיּוֹםin the dayאֲשֶׁרwhichשִׂבְּרוּthey had hopedאֹיְבֵיthe enemies ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsלִשְׁלוֹטto domineerבָּהֶםin themוְנַהֲפוֹךְand it was reversedהוּאheאֲשֶׁרwhichיִשְׁלְטוּthey domineeredהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsהֵמָּהtheyבְּשֹׂנְאֵיהֶם׃over those who hated them

   Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;)

   נִקְהֲלוּgatheredהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsבְּעָרֵיהֶםin their citiesבְּכׇל־מְדִינוֹתin all the provinces ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingאֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁAhasuerusלִשְׁלֹחַlayיָדhandsבִּמְבַקְשֵׁיon those seekingרָעָתָםtheir wickednessוְאִישׁand a manלֹא־עָמַדnot stoodבִּפְנֵיהֶםbefore themכִּי־נָפַלthat fellפַּחְדָּםthe fear of themעַל־כׇּל־הָעַמִּים׃upon all the people

   The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.

3. 3

   וְכׇל־שָׂרֵיand all captains ofהַמְּדִינוֹתthe provincesוְהָאֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנִיםand the satrapsוְהַפַּחוֹתand the governorsוְעֹשֵׂיand those doingהַמְּלָאכָהthe taskאֲשֶׁרwhichלַמֶּלֶךְthe kingמְנַשְּׂאִיםwere supportingאֶת־הַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsכִּי־נָפַלthat fellפַּחַד־מׇרְדֳּכַיdread Mordecaiעֲלֵיהֶם׃upon them

   And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.

4. 4

   כִּי־גָדוֹלfor great isמׇרְדֳּכַיMordecaiבְּבֵיתin the house ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingוְשׇׁמְעוֹand his fameהוֹלֵךְgoingבְּכׇל־הַמְּדִינוֹתin all the provincesכִּי־הָאִישׁbecause the manמׇרְדֳּכַיMordecaiהוֹלֵךְgoingוְגָדוֹל׃and great

   For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces: for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.

   וַיַּכּוּand scourgedהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsבְּכׇל־אֹיְבֵיהֶםin all their enemiesמַכַּת־חֶרֶבwith the stroke of the swordוְהֶרֶגand slaughterוְאַבְדָןand destructionוַיַּעֲשׂוּand they didבְשֹׂנְאֵיהֶםover those who hated themכִּרְצוֹנָם׃according to their desires

   Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that hated them.

6. 6

   וּבְשׁוּשַׁןand in Shushanהַבִּירָהthe citadelהָרְגוּhad slainהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsוְאַבֵּדand they destroyedחֲמֵשׁfiveמֵאוֹתhundredאִישׁ׃men

   And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men.

   וְאֵתandפַּרְשַׁנְדָּתָאParshandathaוְאֵתandדַּלְפוֹןDalphonוְאֵתandאַסְפָּתָא׃Aspatha

   And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,

   וְאֵתandפּוֹרָתָאPorathaוְאֵתandאֲדַלְיָאAdaliaוְאֵתandאֲרִידָתָא׃Aridatha

   And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,

   And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,

    עֲשֶׂרֶתtenבְּנֵיthe sons ofהָמָןHamanבֶּן־הַמְּדָתָאthe son of Hammedathaצֹרֵרthe opposer ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsהָרָגוּthey killedוּבַבִּזָּהand by the plunderלֹאnotשָׁלְחוּthey sent forthאֶת־יָדָם׃them

    The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, slew they; but on the spoil laid they not their hand.

11. 11

    בַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatבָּאcameמִסְפַּרthe number ofהַהֲרוּגִיםthose killedבְּשׁוּשַׁןin Shushanהַבִּירָהthe citadelלִפְנֵיbeforeהַמֶּלֶךְ׃the king

    On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king.

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingלְאֶסְתֵּרto Estherהַמַּלְכָּהthe queenבְּשׁוּשַׁןin Shushanהַבִּירָהthe citadelהָרְגוּhad slainהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsוְאַבֵּדand they destroyedחֲמֵשׁfiveמֵאוֹתhundredאִישׁmenוְאֵתandעֲשֶׂרֶתtenבְּנֵי־הָמָןsons of Hamanבִּשְׁאָרwith the rest ofמְדִינוֹתthe provinces ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingמֶהwhatעָשׂוּthey didוּמַה־שְּׁאֵלָתֵךְyea and what is petition yourוְיִנָּתֵןand shall be deliveredלָךְto youוּמַה־בַּקָּשָׁתֵךְand what is your requestעוֹדany moreוְתֵעָשׂ׃and it may be done

    And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king's provinces? now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.

13. 13

    וַתֹּאמֶרand saidאֶסְתֵּרEstherאִם־עַל־הַמֶּלֶךְif upon the kingטוֹבgoodיִנָּתֵןgiven be shallגַּם־מָחָרalso on the morrowלַיְּהוּדִיםto the Jewsאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּשׁוּשָׁןin Shushanלַעֲשׂוֹתto doכְּדָתaccording to the lawהַיּוֹםthe dayוְאֵתandעֲשֶׂרֶתtenבְּנֵי־הָמָןsons of Hamanיִתְלוּlet them hangעַל־הָעֵץ׃upon the tree

    Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do to morrow also according unto this day's decree, and let Haman's ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.

14. 14

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingלְהֵעָשׂוֹתto be acted uponכֵּןthusוַתִּנָּתֵןand it was givenדָּתlawבְּשׁוּשָׁןin Shushanוְאֵתandעֲשֶׂרֶתtenבְּנֵי־הָמָןsons of Hamanתָּלוּ׃they have hanged

    And the king commanded it so to be done: and the decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman's ten sons.

15. 15

    וַיִּקָּהֲלוּand gathered(היהודיים)[הַיְּהוּדִים]the Jewsאֲשֶׁר־בְּשׁוּשָׁןwhich in Shushanגַּםalsoבְּיוֹםin the day ofאַרְבָּעָה־עָשָׂרfourteenלְחֹדֶשׁto monthאֲדָרAdarוַיַּהַרְגוּand slewבְשׁוּשָׁןin Shushanשְׁלֹשׁthreeמֵאוֹתhundredאִישׁmenוּבַבִּזָּהand by the plunderלֹאnotשָׁלְחוּthey sent forthאֶת־יָדָם׃them

    For the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men at Shushan; but on the prey they laid not their hand.

16. 16

    וּשְׁאָרand remnantהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsאֲשֶׁרwhichבִּמְדִינוֹתin the provinces ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingנִקְהֲלוּgatheredוְעָמֹדand they made a standעַל־נַפְשָׁםupon their soulוְנוֹחַand they had restמֵאֹיְבֵיהֶםfrom their enemiesוְהָרוֹגand the killבְּשֹׂנְאֵיהֶםover those who hated themחֲמִשָּׁהfiveוְשִׁבְעִיםand seventyאָלֶףthousandוּבַבִּזָּהand by the plunderלֹאnotשָׁלְחוּthey sent forthאֶת־יָדָם׃them

    But the other Jews that were in the king's provinces gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of their foes seventy and five thousand, but they laid not their hands on the prey,

17. 17

    בְּיוֹם־שְׁלוֹשָׁה־עָשָׂרon the thirteenth dayלְחֹדֶשׁto monthאֲדָרAdarוְנוֹחַand they had restבְּאַרְבָּעָה־עָשָׂרon the fourteenthבּוֹin itוְעָשֹׂהand they madeאֹתוֹhimיוֹםdayמִשְׁתֶּהfeastוְשִׂמְחָה׃and happiness

    On the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same rested they, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

18. 18

    [וְהַיְּהוּדִים]and the Jewsאֲשֶׁר־בְּשׁוּשָׁןwhich in Shushanנִקְהֲלוּgatheredבִּשְׁלוֹשָׁה־עָשָׂרon the thirteenthבּוֹin itוּבְאַרְבָּעָה־עָשָׂרand on the fourteenthבּוֹin itוְנוֹחַand they had restבַּחֲמִשָּׁה־עָשָׂרon the fifteenthבּוֹin itוְעָשֹׂהand they madeאֹתוֹhimיוֹםdayמִשְׁתֶּהfeastוְשִׂמְחָה׃and happiness

    But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

19. 19

    עַל־כֵּןthereforeהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews[הַפְּרָזִים]the rural villagersהַיֹּשְׁבִיםthe inhabitantsבְּעָרֵיin the cities ofהַפְּרָזוֹתthe open regionsעֹשִׂיםwhich actאֵת־יוֹםdayאַרְבָּעָה־עָשָׂרfourteenלְחֹדֶשׁto monthאֲדָרAdarשִׂמְחָהjoyוּמִשְׁתֶּהand feastingוְיוֹםand dayטוֹבgoodוּמִשְׁלֹחַand presentationמָנוֹתportionsאִישׁa manלְרֵעֵהוּ׃to his neighbor

    Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.

20. 20

    וַיִּכְתֹּבand he wroteמׇרְדֳּכַיMordecaiאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהtheseוַיִּשְׁלַחand sentסְפָרִיםrecordsאֶל־כׇּל־הַיְּהוּדִיםto all the Jewsאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּכׇל־מְדִינוֹתin all the provinces ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingאֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁAhasuerusהַקְּרוֹבִיםthe nearוְהָרְחוֹקִים׃and the far

    And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,

21. 21

    לְקַיֵּםto fulfillעֲלֵיהֶםupon themלִהְיוֹתto beעֹשִׂיםwhich actאֵת־יוֹםdayאַרְבָּעָה־עָשָׂרfourteenלְחֹדֶשׁto monthאֲדָרAdarוְאֵתandיוֹם־חֲמִשָּׁה־עָשָׂרthe fifteenth dayבּוֹin itבְּכׇל־שָׁנָהin all yearוְשָׁנָה׃and a year

    To stablish this among them, that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,

22. 22

    כַּיָּמִיםlike the daysאֲשֶׁר־נָחוּwhich they had restבָהֶםamong themהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsמֵאֹיְבֵיהֶםfrom their enemiesוְהַחֹדֶשׁand the monthאֲשֶׁרwhichנֶהְפַּךְit was changedלָהֶםto themמִיָּגוֹןfrom sorrowלְשִׂמְחָהto their joyוּמֵאֵבֶלand from mourningלְיוֹםto dayטוֹבgoodלַעֲשׂוֹתto doאוֹתָםthemיְמֵיthe days ofמִשְׁתֶּהfeastוְשִׂמְחָהand happinessוּמִשְׁלֹחַand presentationמָנוֹתportionsאִישׁa manלְרֵעֵהוּto his neighborוּמַתָּנוֹתand giftsלָאֶבְיֹנִים׃to the needy people

    As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.

23. 23

    וְקִבֵּלand undertookהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־הֵחֵלּוּthat which beganלַעֲשׂוֹתto doוְאֵתandאֲשֶׁר־כָּתַבwhich he wroteמׇרְדֳּכַיMordecaiאֲלֵיהֶם׃to them

    And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them;

24. 24

    כִּיbecauseהָמָןHamanבֶּן־הַמְּדָתָאthe son of Hammedathaהָאֲגָגִיthe Agagiteצֹרֵרthe opposer ofכׇּל־הַיְּהוּדִיםall the Jewsחָשַׁבhe thoughtעַל־הַיְּהוּדִיםupon the Jewsלְאַבְּדָםto destroy themוְהִפִּלand he castפּוּרPurהוּאheהַגּוֹרָלthe lotלְהֻמָּםto disturb themוּלְאַבְּדָם׃and to destroy them

    Because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them;

25. 25

    וּבְבֹאָהּand when she cameלִפְנֵיbeforeהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingאָמַרsaidעִם־הַסֵּפֶרwith the bookיָשׁוּבhe shall returnמַחֲשַׁבְתּוֹhis planהָרָעָהthe evilאֲשֶׁר־חָשַׁבwhich he thoughtעַל־הַיְּהוּדִיםupon the Jewsעַל־רֹאשׁוֹupon his headוְתָלוּand they will hangאֹתוֹhimוְאֶת־בָּנָיוand his sonsעַל־הָעֵץ׃upon the tree

    But when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

26. 26

    עַל־כֵּןthereforeקָרְאוּcalled uponלַיָּמִיםfor the daysהָאֵלֶּהtheseפוּרִיםPurimעַל־שֵׁםupon the name ofהַפּוּרthe Purעַל־כֵּןthereforeעַל־כׇּל־דִּבְרֵיupon all the words ofהָאִגֶּרֶתthe epistleהַזֹּאתthisוּמָה־רָאוּand what sawעַל־כָּכָהupon thusוּמָהand whatהִגִּיעַcome hasאֲלֵיהֶם׃to them

    Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come unto them,

27. 27

    קִיְּמוּthey imposed(וקבל)[וְקִבְּלוּ]and took upon themהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsעֲלֵיהֶםupon themוְעַל־זַרְעָםand upon their seedוְעַלand uponכׇּל־הַנִּלְוִיםall the one who joined themselvesעֲלֵיהֶםupon themוְלֹאand notיַעֲבוֹרit will pass awayלִהְיוֹתto beעֹשִׂיםwhich actאֵת־שְׁנֵיtwoהַיָּמִיםthe daysהָאֵלֶּהtheseכִּכְתָבָםaccording to their writingוְכִזְמַנָּםand according to their appointed timeבְּכׇל־שָׁנָהin all yearוְשָׁנָה׃and a year

    The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing, and according to their appointed time every year;

28. 28

    וְהַיָּמִיםand the daysהָאֵלֶּהtheseנִזְכָּרִיםrecorded areוְנַעֲשִׂיםand are acted uponבְּכׇל־דּוֹרin all generationוָדוֹרto generationמִשְׁפָּחָהfamilyוּמִשְׁפָּחָהfamilyמְדִינָהprovincesוּמְדִינָהand provinceוְעִירand the city ofוָעִירand a cityוִימֵיand the days ofהַפּוּרִיםthe Purimהָאֵלֶּהtheseלֹאnotיַעַבְרוּthey shall passמִתּוֹךְfrom the midst ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsוְזִכְרָםand their remembranceלֹא־יָסוּףnot it will ceaseמִזַּרְעָם׃of their seed

    And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.

29. 29

    וַתִּכְתֹּבand she wroteאֶסְתֵּרEstherהַמַּלְכָּהthe queenבַת־אֲבִיחַיִלthe daughter of Abihailוּמׇרְדֳּכַיand Mordecaiהַיְּהוּדִיthe Jewאֶת־כׇּל־תֹּקֶףall authorityלְקַיֵּםto fulfillאֵת־אִגֶּרֶתletterהַפֻּרִיםthe Purimהַזֹּאתthisהַשֵּׁנִית׃the second

    Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim.

30. 30

    וַיִּשְׁלַחand sentסְפָרִיםrecordsאֶל־כׇּל־הַיְּהוּדִיםto all the Jewsאֶל־שֶׁבַעto sevenוְעֶשְׂרִיםand twentyוּמֵאָהand one hundredמְדִינָהprovincesמַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofאֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁAhasuerusדִּבְרֵיthe words ofשָׁלוֹםpeaceוֶאֱמֶת׃and true

    And he sent the letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,

31. 31

    לְקַיֵּםto fulfillאֶת־יְמֵיthe days ofהַפֻּרִיםthe Purimהָאֵלֶּהtheseבִּזְמַנֵּיהֶםat their appointed timesכַּאֲשֶׁרasקִיַּםhe had imposedעֲלֵיהֶםupon themמׇרְדֳּכַיMordecaiהַיְּהוּדִיthe Jewוְאֶסְתֵּרand Estherהַמַּלְכָּהthe queenוְכַאֲשֶׁרand asקִיְּמוּthey imposedעַל־נַפְשָׁםupon their soulוְעַל־זַרְעָםand upon their seedדִּבְרֵיthe words ofהַצּוֹמוֹתthe fastsוְזַעֲקָתָם׃and their cry

    To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their cry.

32. 32

    וּמַאֲמַרand the command ofאֶסְתֵּרEstherקִיַּםhe had imposedדִּבְרֵיthe words ofהַפֻּרִיםthe Purimהָאֵלֶּהtheseוְנִכְתָּבand it was writtenבַּסֵּפֶר׃in the book

    And the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
