   David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him.

   And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

   And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.

   And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidגָּדGadGadהַנָּבִיאhan/na/VIthe prophetאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDto Davidלֹאlodo notתֵשֵׁבte/SHEVstayבַּמְּצוּדָהbam/me/tsu/DAin the strongholdלֵךְlekhdepartוּבָאתָ־לְּךָu/VA/ta-le/KHAand goאֶרֶץE/retsinto the land ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameיַעַרYA/arthe forest ofחָרֶת׃CHA/retHareth

   And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.

   When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulלַעֲבָדָיוla/a/va/DAYVto his servantsהַנִּצָּבִיםhan/nits/tsa/VIMwho stoodעָלָיוa/LAYVabout himשִׁמְעוּ־נָאshim/U-nahear nowבְּנֵיbe/NEyou children ofיְמִינִיYe/mi/NIBenjaminגַּם־לְכֻלְּכֶםgam-le/khul/le/KHEMalso to all of youיִתֵּןyit/TENgiveבֶּן־יִשַׁיben-Yi/SHAYthe son of Jesseשָׂדוֹתsa/DOTfieldsוּכְרָמִיםu/khe/ra/MIMand vineyardsלְכֻלְּכֶםle/khul/le/KHEMall of youיָשִׂיםya/SIMwill he makeשָׂרֵיsa/REcommanders ofאֲלָפִיםa/la/FIMthousandsוְשָׂרֵיve/sa/REand commanders ofמֵאוֹת׃me/OThundreds

   Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;

   כִּיkithatקְשַׁרְתֶּםke/shar/TEMyou have conspiredכֻּלְּכֶםkul/le/KHEMall of youעָלַיa/LAYagainst meוְאֵין־גֹּלֶהve/EN-go/LEand there is none who disclosesאֶת־אׇזְנִיet-oz/NIto my earבִּכְרׇת־בְּנִיbikh/ROT-be/NIwhen my son makes a covenantעִם־בֶּן־יִשַׁיim-ben-Yi/SHAYwith the son of Jesseוְאֵין־חֹלֶהve/EN-cho/LEand there is none that is sorryמִכֶּםmik/KEMof youעָלַיa/LAYagainst meוְגֹלֶהve/go/LEor disclosesאֶת־אׇזְנִיet-oz/NIto my earכִּיkithatהֵקִיםhe/KIMhas stirred upבְּנִיbe/NImy sonאֶת־עַבְדִּיet-av/DImy servantעָלַיa/LAYagainst meלְאֹרֵבle/o/REVto lie in waitכַּיּוֹםkay/YOMas this dayהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

   That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

   וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anthen answeredדֹּאֵגDo/EGDoegהָאֲדֹמִיha/A/do/MIthe Edomiteוְהוּאve/HUwhoנִצָּבnits/TSAVwas standingעַל־עַבְדֵי־שָׁאוּלal-Av/DE-sha/ULby the servants of Saulוַיֹּאמַרvay/yo/MARand saidרָאִיתִיra/I/tiI sawאֶת־בֶּן־יִשַׁיet-Ben-yi/SHAYthe son of JesseבָּאbacomeנֹבֶהNO/veto Nobאֶל־אֲחִימֶלֶךְel-A/chi/ME/lekhto Ahimelechבֶּן־אֲחִטוּב׃ben-A/chi/TUVthe son of Ahitub

   Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

    וַיִּשְׁאַל־לוֹvay/yish/AL-loand he inquired for himבַּיהֹוָהba-Adonaiof the LORDוְצֵידָהve/tse/DAand provisionsנָתַןna/TANhe gaveלוֹloto himוְאֵתve/ETandחֶרֶבCHE/revthe sword ofגׇּלְיָתGol/YATGoliathהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineנָתַןna/TANhe gaveלוֹ׃loto him

    And he enquired of the LORD for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingלִקְרֹאlik/ROto summonאֶת־אֲחִימֶלֶךְet-A/chi/ME/lekhAhimelechבֶּן־אֲחִיטוּבben-A/chi/TUVthe son of Ahitubהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestוְאֵתve/ETandכׇּל־בֵּיתkol-betall the house ofאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherהַכֹּהֲנִיםhak/ko/ha/NIMthe priestsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereבְּנֹבbe/NOVin Nobוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameכֻלָּםkhul/LAMall of themאֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְ׃el-ham/ME/lekhto the king

    Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulשְׁמַע־נָאshe/MA-nahear nowבֶּן־אֲחִיטוּבben-A/chi/TUVO son of Ahitubוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהִנְנִיhin/NIhere I amאֲדֹנִי׃a/do/NImy lord

    And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָוe/LAVto himשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulלָמָּהLAM/mawhyקְשַׁרְתֶּםke/shar/TEMhave you conspiredעָלַיa/LAYagainst meאַתָּהat/TAyouוּבֶן־יִשָׁיu/VEN-yi/SHAYand the son of Jesseבְּתִתְּךָbe/tit/te/KHAin that you have givenלוֹloto himלֶחֶםLE/chembreadוְחֶרֶבve/CHE/revand a swordוְשָׁאוֹלve/sha/OLand inquiredלוֹlofor himבֵּאלֹהִיםbe/lo/HIMof Godלָקוּםla/KUMthat he should riseאֵלַיe/LAYagainst meלְאֹרֵבle/o/REVto lie in waitכַּיּוֹםkay/YOMas this dayהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

    וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anand he answeredאֲחִימֶלֶךְA/chi/ME/lekhAhimelechאֶת־הַמֶּלֶךְet-ham/ME/lekhthe kingוַיֹּאמַרvay/yo/MARand saidוּמִיu/MIand whoבְכׇל־עֲבָדֶיךָve/KHOL-a/va/DE/khaamong all your servantsכְּדָוִדke/Da/VIDlike Davidנֶאֱמָןne/e/MANfaithfulוַחֲתַןva/cha/TANand the son-in-law ofהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingוְסָרve/SARand goesאֶל־מִשְׁמַעְתֶּךָel-mish/ma/TE/khaat your biddingוְנִכְבָּדve/nikh/BADand honoredבְּבֵיתֶךָ׃be/ve/TE/khain your house

    Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house?

    הַיּוֹםhay/YOMtodayהַחִלֹּתִיha/chil/LO/tihave I begun(לשאול)lashval[לִשְׁאׇל־]לוֹlish/OL-loto enquire for himבֵאלֹהִיםve/lo/HIMof Godחָלִילָהcha/LI/lafar be itלִּיlifrom meאַל־יָשֵׂםal-ya/SEMlet not imputeהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingבְּעַבְדּוֹbe/av/DOagainst his servantדָבָרda/VARanythingבְּכׇל־בֵּיתbe/KHOL-betto all the house ofאָבִיa/VImy fatherכִּיkiforלֹא־יָדַעlo-ya/DAknew notעַבְדְּךָav/de/KHAyour servantבְּכׇל־זֹאתbe/KHOL-zotof all thisדָּבָרda/VARa thingקָטֹןka/TONsmallאוֹoorגָדוֹל׃ga/DOLgreat

    Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.

16. 16

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingמוֹתmotdieתָּמוּתta/MUTyou shall dieאֲחִימֶלֶךְA/chi/ME/lekhAhimelechאַתָּהat/TAyouוְכׇל־בֵּיתve/KHOL-betand all the house ofאָבִיךָ׃a/VI/khayour father

    And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingלָרָצִיםla/ra/TSIMto the runnersהַנִּצָּבִיםhan/nits/tsa/VIMwho stoodעָלָיוa/LAYVabout himסֹבּוּSOB/buturnוְהָמִיתוּve/ha/MI/tuand killכֹּהֲנֵיko/ha/NEthe priests ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDכִּיkiforגַם־יָדָםgam-ya/DAMtheir hand also isעִם־דָּוִדim-Da/VIDwith Davidוְכִיve/KHIand becauseיָדְעוּya/de/Uthey knewכִּי־בֹרֵחַki-vo/RE/achthat was fleeingהוּאhuheוְלֹאve/LOand notגָלוּga/LUdid they discloseאֶת־[אׇזְנִי]et-oz/NIit to my ear(אזנו)zanavוְלֹא־אָבוּve/LO-a/VUbut would notעַבְדֵיav/DEthe servants ofהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingלִשְׁלֹחַlish/LO/achto put forthאֶת־יָדָםet-ya/DAMtheir handלִפְגֹעַlif/GO/ato fall uponבְּכֹהֲנֵיbe/kho/ha/NEthe priests ofיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe king[לְדוֹאֵג]Le/do/EGto Doegסֹבsovturnאַתָּהat/TAyouוּפְגַעu/fe/GAand fall uponבַּכֹּהֲנִיםbak/ko/ha/NIMthe priestsוַיִּסֹּבvay/yis/SOVand turned[דּוֹאֵג]Do/EGDoegהָאֲדֹמִיha/A/do/MIthe Edomiteוַיִּפְגַּע־הוּאvay/yif/GA-huand he fell uponבַּכֹּהֲנִיםbak/ko/ha/NIMthe priestsוַיָּמֶתvay/YA/metand he killedבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatשְׁמֹנִיםshe/mo/NIMeightyוַחֲמִשָּׁהva/cha/mish/SHAand fiveאִישׁishmenנֹשֵׂאno/SEwho woreאֵפוֹדe/FODan ephod ofבָּד׃badlinen

    And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.

    וְאֵתve/ETandנֹבNovNobעִיר־הַכֹּהֲנִיםir-hak/ko/ha/NIMthe city of the priestsהִכָּהhik/KAhe struckלְפִי־חֶרֶבle/FI-CHE/revby the edge of the swordמֵאִישׁme/ISHboth menוְעַד־אִשָּׁהve/AD-ish/SHAand womanמֵעוֹלֵלme/o/LELchildוְעַד־יוֹנֵקve/AD-yo/NEKand nursing infantוְשׁוֹרve/SHORand oxוַחֲמוֹרva/cha/MORand donkeyוָשֶׂהva/SEand sheepלְפִי־חָרֶב׃le/FI-CHA/revby the edge of the sword

    And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

20. 20

    וַיִּמָּלֵטvay/yim/ma/LETbut escapedבֵּן־אֶחָדben-e/CHADone sonלַאֲחִימֶלֶךְla/A/chi/ME/lekhof Ahimelechבֶּן־אֲחִטוּבben-A/chi/TUVthe son of Ahitubוּשְׁמוֹu/she/MOand his nameאֶבְיָתָרEv/ya/TARAbiatharוַיִּבְרַחvay/yiv/RACHand fledאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterדָוִד׃Da/VIDDavid

    And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.

    וַיַּגֵּדvay/yag/GEDand toldאֶבְיָתָרEv/ya/TARAbiatharלְדָוִדLe/da/VIDDavidכִּיkithatהָרַגha/RAGhad killedשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֵת־כֹּהֲנֵיet-ko/ha/NEthe priests ofיְהֹוָה׃Adonaithe LORD

    And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the LORD's priests.

22. 22

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidלְאֶבְיָתָרle/Ev/ya/TARto Abiatharיָדַעְתִּיya/DA/tiI knewבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMon the dayהַהוּאha/HUthatכִּי־שָׁםki-shamwhen was there[דּוֹאֵג]Do/EGDoegהָאֲדֹמִיha/A/do/MIthe Edomiteכִּי־הַגֵּדki-hag/GEDthat tellיַגִּידyag/GIDhe would tellלְשָׁאוּלLe/sha/ULSaulאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIIסַבֹּתִיsab/BO/tihave causedבְּכׇל־נֶפֶשׁbe/KHOL-NE/feshagainst every soul ofבֵּיתbetthe house ofאָבִיךָ׃a/VI/khayour father

    And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house.

    שְׁבָהshe/VAstayאִתִּיit/TIwith meאַל־תִּירָאal-ti/RAdo not fearכִּיkiforאֲשֶׁר־יְבַקֵּשׁa/SHER-ye/vak/KESHhe who seeksאֶת־נַפְשִׁיet-naf/SHImy lifeיְבַקֵּשׁye/vak/KESHseeksאֶת־נַפְשֶׁךָet-naf/SHE/khayour lifeכִּי־מִשְׁמֶרֶתki-mish/ME/retfor in safekeepingאַתָּהat/TAare youעִמָּדִי׃im/ma/DIwith me

    Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.
