   Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.

   וְשָׁאוּלve/Sha/ULand Saulוְאִישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/ISH-yis/ra/ELand the men of Israelנֶאֶסְפוּne/es/FUwere gatheredוַיַּחֲנוּvay/ya/cha/NUand they encampedבְּעֵמֶקbe/E/mekin the valley ofהָאֵלָהHa/e/LAElahוַיַּעַרְכוּvay/ya/ar/KHUand drew up in arrayמִלְחָמָהmil/cha/MAbattleלִקְרַאתlik/RATagainstפְּלִשְׁתִּים׃Pe/lish/TIMthe Philistines

   And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

   וּפְלִשְׁתִּיםu/Fe/lish/TIMand the Philistinesעֹמְדִיםom/DIMwere standingאֶל־הָהָרel-ha/HARon the mountainמִזֶּהmiz/ZEon the one sideוְיִשְׂרָאֵלve/Yis/ra/ELand Israelעֹמְדִיםom/DIMwere standingאֶל־הָהָרel-ha/HARon the mountainמִזֶּהmiz/ZEon the other sideוְהַגַּיְאve/hag/GAYand the valleyבֵּינֵיהֶם׃be/ne/HEMbetween them

   And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

   וַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went outאִישׁ־הַבֵּנַיִםish-hab/be/NA/yima championמִמַּחֲנוֹתmim/ma/cha/NOTout of the camps ofפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPe/lish/TIMthe PhilistinesגׇּלְיָתGol/YATGoliathשְׁמוֹshe/MOhis nameמִגַּתmig/GATfrom Gathגׇּבְהוֹgov/HOwhose height wasשֵׁשׁsheshsixאַמּוֹתam/MOTcubitsוָזָרֶת׃va/ZA/retand a span

   And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

   וְכוֹבַעve/KHO/vaand a helmet ofנְחֹשֶׁתne/CHO/shetbronzeעַל־רֹאשׁוֹal-ro/SHOupon his headוְשִׁרְיוֹןve/shir/YONand a coat of mail ofקַשְׂקַשִּׂיםkas/kas/SIMscalesהוּאhuheלָבוּשׁla/VUSHwas clothedוּמִשְׁקַלu/mish/KALand the weight ofהַשִּׁרְיוֹןhash/shir/YONthe coatחֲמֵשֶׁת־אֲלָפִיםcha/ME/shet-a/la/FIMfive thousandשְׁקָלִיםshe/ka/LIMshekelsנְחֹשֶׁת׃ne/CHO/shetof bronze

   And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

   And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.

   And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

   וַיַּעֲמֹדvay/ya/a/MODand stoodוַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand calledאֶל־מַעַרְכֹתel-ma/ar/KHOTto the ranks ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלָהֶםla/HEMto themלָמָּהLAM/mawhyתֵצְאוּtets/Uhave you come outלַעֲרֹךְla/a/ROKHto draw upמִלְחָמָהmil/cha/MAbattleהֲלוֹאha/LOam notאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIIהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineוְאַתֶּםve/at/TEMand youעֲבָדִיםa/va/DIMservantsלְשָׁאוּלle/Sha/ULof Saulבְּרוּ־לָכֶםbe/RU-la/KHEMchoose for yourselvesאִישׁisha manוְיֵרֵדve/ye/REDand let him come downאֵלָי׃e/LAYto me

   And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

   אִם־יוּכַלim-yu/KHALif he is ableלְהִלָּחֵםle/hil/la/CHEMto fightאִתִּיit/TIwith meוְהִכָּנִיve/hik/KA/niand strike meוְהָיִינוּve/ha/YI/nuthen will we beלָכֶםla/KHEMyourלַעֲבָדִיםla/a/va/DIMservantsוְאִם־אֲנִיve/IM-a/NIand if Iאוּכַל־לוֹu/KHAL-loprevail against himוְהִכִּיתִיוve/hik/ki/TIVand strike himוִהְיִיתֶםvih/yi/TEMthen shall you beלָנוּLA/nuourלַעֲבָדִיםla/a/va/DIMservantsוַעֲבַדְתֶּםva/a/vad/TEMand you will serveאֹתָנוּ׃o/TA/nuus

   If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineאֲנִיa/NIIחֵרַפְתִּיche/RAF/tidefyאֶת־מַעַרְכוֹתet-ma/ar/KHOTthe ranks ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelהַיּוֹםhay/YOMdayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisתְּנוּ־לִיte/NU-ligive meאִישׁisha manוְנִלָּחֲמָהve/nil/la/cha/MAthat we may fightיָחַד׃YA/chadtogether

    And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

    וַיִּשְׁמַעvay/yish/MAand heardשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulוְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵלve/KHOL-yis/ra/ELand all Israelאֶת־דִּבְרֵיet-div/REthe words ofהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוַיֵּחַתּוּvay/ye/CHAT/tuand they were dismayedוַיִּרְאוּvay/yir/Uand afraidמְאֹד׃me/ODgreatly

    When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

    וְדָוִדve/Da/VIDand Davidבֶּן־אִישׁben-ishwas the son ofאֶפְרָתִיEf/ra/TIEphrathiteהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthatמִבֵּיתmib/BETof Beth-לֶחֶםLE/chemlehemיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudahוּשְׁמוֹu/she/MOand his nameיִשַׁיYi/SHAYJesseוְלוֹve/LOand he hadשְׁמֹנָהshe/mo/NAeightבָנִיםva/NIMsonsוְהָאִישׁve/ha/ISHand the manבִּימֵיbi/MEin the days ofשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulזָקֵןza/KENwas oldבָּאbaadvancedבַאֲנָשִׁים׃va/a/na/SHIMamong men

    Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehem-judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.

    וַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand they wentשְׁלֹשֶׁתshe/LO/shetthreeבְּנֵי־יִשַׁיbe/NE-yi/SHAYthe sons of Jesseהַגְּדֹלִיםhag/ge/do/LIMthe eldestהָלְכוּha/le/KHUhad goneאַחֲרֵי־שָׁאוּלa/cha/RE-Sha/ULafter Saulלַמִּלְחָמָהlam/mil/cha/MAto the battleוְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the name ofשְׁלֹשֶׁתshe/LO/shetthree ofבָּנָיוba/NAYVhis sonsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהָלְכוּha/le/KHUwentבַּמִּלְחָמָהbam/mil/cha/MAto the battleאֱלִיאָבE/li/AVEliabהַבְּכוֹרhab/be/KHORthe firstbornוּמִשְׁנֵהוּu/mish/NE/huand his secondאֲבִינָדָבA/vi/na/DAVAbinadabוְהַשְּׁלִשִׁיve/hash/she/li/SHIand the thirdשַׁמָּה׃Sham/MAShammah

    And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

    וְדָוִדve/Da/VIDand Davidהוּאhuwasהַקָּטָןhak/ka/TANthe youngestוּשְׁלֹשָׁהu/she/lo/SHAand threeהַגְּדֹלִיםhag/ge/do/LIMthe eldestהָלְכוּha/le/KHUwentאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterשָׁאוּל׃Sha/ULSaul

    And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.

15. 15

    וְדָוִדve/Da/VIDand Davidהֹלֵךְho/LEKHwentוָשָׁבva/SHAVand returnedמֵעַלme/ALfromשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulלִרְעוֹתlir/OTto tendאֶת־צֹאןet-tsonthe sheep ofאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherבֵּיתBetin Beth-לָחֶם׃LA/chemlehem

    But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Beth-lehem.

16. 16

    וַיִּגַּשׁvay/yig/GASHand came nearהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineהַשְׁכֵּםhash/KEMearlyוְהַעֲרֵבve/ha/a/REVand lateוַיִּתְיַצֵּבvay/yit/yats/TSEVand took his standאַרְבָּעִיםar/ba/IMfortyיוֹם׃yomdays

    And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיִשַׁיYi/SHAYJesseלְדָוִדle/Da/VIDto Davidבְּנוֹbe/NOhis sonקַח־נָאkach-natake nowלְאַחֶיךָle/a/CHE/khafor your brothersאֵיפַתe/FATan ephah ofהַקָּלִיאhak/ka/LIparched grainהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַעֲשָׂרָהva/a/sa/RAand tenלֶחֶםLE/chemloavesהַזֶּהhaz/ZEtheseוְהָרֵץve/ha/RETSand runהַמַּחֲנֶהham/ma/cha/NEto the campלְאַחֶיךָ׃le/a/CHE/khato your brothers

    And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;

    וְאֵתve/ETandעֲשֶׂרֶתa/SE/rettenחֲרִצֵיcha/ri/TSEcheeses ofהֶחָלָבhe/cha/LAVmilkהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseתָּבִיאta/VIbringלְשַׂר־הָאָלֶףle/SAR-ha/A/lefto the commander of the thousandוְאֶת־אַחֶיךָve/ET-a/CHE/khaand your brothersתִּפְקֹדtif/KODyou shall look intoלְשָׁלוֹםle/sha/LOMthe welfare ofוְאֶת־עֲרֻבָּתָםve/ET-a/rub/ba/TAMand their tokenתִּקָּח׃tik/KACHtake

    And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

    וְשָׁאוּלve/Sha/ULnow Saulוְהֵמָּהve/HEM/maand theyוְכׇל־אִישׁve/KHOL-ishand all the men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelבְּעֵמֶקbe/E/mekin the valley ofהָאֵלָהHa/e/LAElahנִלְחָמִיםnil/cha/MIMwere fightingעִם־פְּלִשְׁתִּים׃im-Pe/lish/TIMwith the Philistines

    Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

    וַיַּשְׁכֵּםvay/yash/KEMand rose earlyדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidבַּבֹּקֶרbab/BO/kerin the morningוַיִּטֹּשׁvay/yit/TOSHand leftאֶת־הַצֹּאןet-hats/TSONthe flockעַל־שֹׁמֵרal-sho/MERwith a keeperוַיִּשָּׂאvay/yis/SAand took themוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasצִוָּהוּtsiv/VA/huhad commanded himיִשָׁיYi/SHAYJesseוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameהַמַּעְגָּלָהham/ma/GA/lato the encampmentוְהַחַיִלve/ha/CHA/yilas the armyהַיֹּצֵאhay/yo/TSEwas going outאֶל־הַמַּעֲרָכָהel-ham/ma/a/ra/KHAto the battle lineוְהֵרֵעוּve/he/RE/uand shoutingבַּמִּלְחָמָה׃bam/mil/cha/MAfor the battle

    And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

    וַתַּעֲרֹךְvat/ta/a/ROKHand drew upיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוּפְלִשְׁתִּיםu/Fe/lish/TIMand the Philistinesמַעֲרָכָהma/a/ra/KHAbattle lineלִקְרַאתlik/RATagainstמַעֲרָכָה׃ma/a/ra/KHAbattle line

    For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.

22. 22

    וַיִּטֹּשׁvay/yit/TOSHand leftדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶת־הַכֵּלִיםet-hak/ke/LIMthe thingsמֵעָלָיוme/a/LAYVfrom himעַל־יַדal-yadin the hand ofשׁוֹמֵרsho/MERthe keeper ofהַכֵּלִיםhak/ke/LIMthe baggageוַיָּרׇץvay/YA/rotsand ranהַמַּעֲרָכָהham/ma/a/ra/KHAto the battle lineוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameוַיִּשְׁאַלvay/yish/ALand askedלְאֶחָיוle/e/CHAYVhis brothersלְשָׁלוֹם׃le/sha/LOMof their welfare

    And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.

    וְהוּאve/HUand heמְדַבֵּרme/dab/BERwas talkingעִמָּםim/MAMwith themוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdאִישׁishthe manהַבֵּנַיִםhab/be/NA/yimthe championעוֹלֶהo/LEcoming upגׇּלְיָתGol/YATGoliathהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineשְׁמוֹshe/MOhis nameמִגַּתmig/GATfrom Gath[מִמַּעַרְכוֹת]mim/ma/ar/KHOTfrom the ranks ofפְּלִשְׁתִּיםPe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesוַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand spokeכַּדְּבָרִיםkad/de/va/RIMaccording to the wordsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוַיִּשְׁמַעvay/yish/MAand heardדָּוִד׃Da/VIDDavid

    And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.

    וְכֹלve/KHOLand allאִישׁishthe men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelבִּרְאוֹתָםbir/o/TAMwhen they sawאֶת־הָאִישׁet-ha/ISHthe manוַיָּנֻסוּvay/ya/NU/suand they fledמִפָּנָיוmip/pa/NAYVfrom before himוַיִּירְאוּvay/yi/re/Uand were afraidמְאֹד׃me/ODgreatly

    And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאִישׁishthe men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelהַרְּאִיתֶםhar/re/i/TEMhave you seenהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manהָעֹלֶהha/o/LEwho has come upהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכִּיkiforלְחָרֵףle/cha/REFto defyאֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵלet-Yis/ra/ELIsraelעֹלֶהo/LEhe comes upוְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it shall be thatהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manאֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּנּוּa/SHER-yak/KEN/nuwho kills himיַעְשְׁרֶנּוּya/she/REN/nuwill enrich himהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingעֹשֶׁרO/sherwith richesגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreatוְאֶת־בִּתּוֹve/ET-bit/TOand his daughterיִתֶּן־לוֹyit/TEN-lowill give himוְאֵתve/ETandבֵּיתbetthe house ofאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherיַעֲשֶׂהya/a/SEmakeחׇפְשִׁיchof/SHIfreeבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃be/Yis/ra/ELin Israel

    And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶל־הָאֲנָשִׁיםel-ha/a/na/SHIMto the menהָעֹמְדִיםha/om/DIMwho stoodעִמּוֹim/MOwith himלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingמַה־יֵּעָשֶׂהma-ye/a/SEwhat shall be doneלָאִישׁla/ISHto the manאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoיַכֶּהyak/KEkillsאֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּיet-Hap/pe/lish/TIthe Philistineהַלָּזhal/LAZthisוְהֵסִירve/he/SIRand takes awayחֶרְפָּהcher/PAthe reproachמֵעַלme/ALfromיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelכִּיkiforמִיmiwho isהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineהֶעָרֵלhe/a/RELthe uncircumcisedהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכִּיkithatחֵרֵףche/REFhe should defyמַעַרְכוֹתma/ar/KHOTthe ranks ofאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodחַיִּים׃chay/YIMliving

    And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלוֹlohimהָעָםha/AMthe peopleכַּדָּבָרkad/da/VARaccording to this wordהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingכֹּהkosoיֵעָשֶׂהye/a/SEshall be doneלָאִישׁla/ISHto the manאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoיַכֶּנּוּ׃yak/KEN/nukills him

    And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

    וַיִּשְׁמַעvay/yish/MAand he heardאֱלִיאָבE/li/AVEliabאָחִיוa/CHIVhis brotherהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLeldestבְּדַבְּרוֹbe/dab/be/ROwhen he spokeאֶל־הָאֲנָשִׁיםel-ha/a/na/SHIMto the menוַיִּחַר־אַףvay/YI/char-afand was kindled the anger ofאֱלִיאָבE/li/AVEliabבְּדָוִדbe/Da/VIDagainst Davidוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלָמָּה־זֶּהLAM/ma-zewhy thenיָרַדְתָּya/RAD/tahave you come downוְעַל־מִיve/AL-miand with whomנָטַשְׁתָּna/TASH/tahave you leftמְעַטme/ATthose fewהַצֹּאןhats/TSONsheepהָהֵנָּהha/HEN/nathoseבַּמִּדְבָּרbam/mid/BARin the wildernessאֲנִיa/NIIיָדַעְתִּיya/DA/tiknowאֶת־זְדֹנְךָet-ze/don/KHAyour prideוְאֵתve/ETandרֹעַRO/athe evil ofלְבָבֶךָle/va/VE/khayour heartכִּיkiforלְמַעַןle/MA/anin orderרְאוֹתre/OTto seeהַמִּלְחָמָהham/mil/cha/MAthe battleיָרָדְתָּ׃ya/RAD/tayou have come down

    And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidמֶהmewhatעָשִׂיתִיa/SI/tihave I doneעָתָּהAT/tanowהֲלוֹאha/LOwas it notדָּבָרda/VARa wordהוּא׃huit

    And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

30. 30

    And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

31. 31

    וַיִּשָּׁמְעוּvay/yish/SHAM/uand when were heardהַדְּבָרִיםhad/de/va/RIMthe wordsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatדִּבֶּרdib/BERspokeדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidוַיַּגִּדוּvay/yag/GI/duthey told themלִפְנֵי־שָׁאוּלlif/NE-Sha/ULbefore Saulוַיִּקָּחֵהוּ׃vay/yik/ka/CHE/huand he took him

    And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.

32. 32

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶל־שָׁאוּלel-Sha/ULto Saulאַל־יִפֹּלal-yip/POLlet not failלֵב־אָדָםlev-a/DAMany man’s heartעָלָיוa/LAYVbecause of himעַבְדְּךָav/de/KHAyour servantיֵלֵךְye/LEKHwill goוְנִלְחַםve/nil/CHAMand fightעִם־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּיim-Hap/pe/lish/TIwith the Philistineהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

33. 33

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDto Davidלֹאlonotתוּכַלtu/KHALyou are ableלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto goאֶל־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּיel-Hap/pe/lish/TIagainst the Philistineהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisלְהִלָּחֵםle/hil/la/CHEMto fightעִמּוֹim/MOwith himכִּי־נַעַרki-NA/arfor a youthאַתָּהat/TAare youוְהוּאve/HUand he has beenאִישׁisha man ofמִלְחָמָהmil/cha/MAwarמִנְּעֻרָיו׃min/ne/u/RAYVfrom his youth

    And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

34. 34

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶל־שָׁאוּלel-Sha/ULto Saulרֹעֶהro/Ea shepherdהָיָהha/YAwasעַבְדְּךָav/de/KHAyour servantלְאָבִיוle/a/VIVfor his fatherבַּצֹּאןbats/TSONsheepוּבָאu/VAand when cameהָאֲרִיha/a/RIa lionוְאֶת־הַדּוֹבve/ET-had/DOVor a bearוְנָשָׂאve/na/SAand tookשֶׂהsea lambמֵהָעֵדֶר׃me/ha/E/derout of the flock

    And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

35. 35

    וְיָצָאתִיve/ya/TSA/tiI went outאַחֲרָיוa/cha/RAYVafter himוְהִכִּתִיוve/hik/ki/TIVand struck himוְהִצַּלְתִּיve/hits/tsal/TIand rescued itמִפִּיוmip/PIVfrom his mouthוַיָּקׇםvay/YA/komand when he roseעָלַיa/LAYagainst meוְהֶחֱזַקְתִּיve/he/che/ZAK/tiI seized himבִּזְקָנוֹbiz/ka/NOby his beardוְהִכִּתִיוve/hik/ki/TIVand struck himוַהֲמִיתִּיו׃va/ha/mit/TIVand killed him

    And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36. 36

    גַּםgambothאֶת־הָאֲרִיet-ha/a/RIthe lionגַּם־הַדֹּבgam-had/DOVand the bearהִכָּהhik/KAhas struckעַבְדֶּךָav/DE/khayour servantוְהָיָהve/ha/YAand shall beהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineהֶעָרֵלhe/a/RELthe uncircumcisedהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכְּאַחַדke/a/CHADas oneמֵהֶםme/HEMof themכִּיkiforחֵרֵףche/REFhe has defiedמַעַרְכֹתma/ar/KHOTthe ranks ofאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodחַיִּים׃chay/YIMliving

    Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

37. 37

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהִצִּלַנִיhits/tsi/LA/nidelivered meמִיַּדmiy/YADfrom the hand ofהָאֲרִיha/a/RIthe lionוּמִיַּדu/miy/YADand from the paw ofהַדֹּבhad/DOVthe bearהוּאhuHeיַצִּילֵנִיyats/tsi/LE/niwill deliver meמִיַּדmiy/YADfrom the hand ofהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDto Davidלֵךְlekhgoוַיהֹוָהve-Adonaiand the LORDיִהְיֶהyih/YEshall beעִמָּךְ׃im/MAKHwith you

    David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

38. 38

    וַיַּלְבֵּשׁvay/yal/BESHand clothedשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶת־דָּוִדet-Da/VIDDavidמַדָּיוmad/DAYVwith his garmentsוְנָתַןve/na/TANand putקוֹבַעKO/vaa helmet ofנְחֹשֶׁתne/CHO/shetbronzeעַל־רֹאשׁוֹal-ro/SHOupon his headוַיַּלְבֵּשׁvay/yal/BESHand he clothedאֹתוֹo/TOhimשִׁרְיוֹן׃shir/YONwith a coat of mail

    And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

39. 39

    וַיַּחְגֹּרvay/yach/GORand girdedדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶת־חַרְבּוֹet-char/BOhis swordמֵעַלme/ALoverלְמַדָּיוle/mad/DAYVhis garmentsוַיֹּאֶלvay/YO/eland triedלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto goכִּיkiforלֹא־נִסָּהlo-nis/SAhe had not tested themוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶל־שָׁאוּלel-Sha/ULto Saulלֹאlonotאוּכַלu/KHALI cannotלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto goבָּאֵלֶּהba/EL/lein theseכִּיkiforלֹאlonotנִסִּיתִיnis/SI/tiI have tested themוַיְסִרֵםvay/si/REMand put them offדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidמֵעָלָיו׃me/a/LAYVfrom him

    And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.

40. 40

    וַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookמַקְלוֹmak/LOhis staffבְּיָדוֹbe/ya/DOin his handוַיִּבְחַר־לוֹvay/yiv/CHAR-loand chose for himselfחֲמִשָּׁהcha/mish/SHAfiveחַלֻּקֵי־אֲבָנִיםchal/lu/KE-a/va/NIMsmooth stonesמִן־הַנַּחַלmin-han/NA/chalfrom the brookוַיָּשֶׂםvay/YA/semand putאֹתָםo/TAMthemבִּכְלִיbikh/LIin the bag ofהָרֹעִיםha/ro/IMthe shepherdsאֲשֶׁר־לוֹa/SHER-lothat he hadוּבַיַּלְקוּטu/vay/yal/KUTin the pouchוְקַלְעוֹve/kal/Oand his slingבְיָדוֹve/ya/DOin his handוַיִּגַּשׁvay/yig/GASHand he drew nearאֶל־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי׃el-Hap/pe/lish/TIto the Philistine

    And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

41. 41

    וַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineהֹלֵךְho/LEKHgoingוְקָרֵבve/ka/REVand drawing nearאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDto Davidוְהָאִישׁve/ha/ISHand the manנֹשֵׂאno/SEwho boreהַצִּנָּהhats/tsin/NAthe shieldלְפָנָיו׃le/fa/NAYVbefore him

    And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.

42. 42

    וַיַּבֵּטvay/yab/BETand when lookedהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineוַיִּרְאֶהvay/yir/Eand sawאֶת־דָּוִדet-Da/VIDDavidוַיִּבְזֵהוּvay/yiv/ZE/huhe despised himכִּי־הָיָהki-ha/YAfor he wasנַעַרNA/ara youthוְאַדְמֹנִיve/ad/mo/NIand ruddyעִם־יְפֵהim-ye/FEwith handsomeמַרְאֶה׃mar/Eappearance

    And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

43. 43

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDto Davidהֲכֶלֶבha/KHE/levam I a dogאָנֹכִיa/no/KHIam Iכִּי־אַתָּהki-at/TAthat youבָא־אֵלַיva-e/LAYcome to meבַּמַּקְלוֹתbam/mak/LOTwith sticksוַיְקַלֵּלvay/kal/LELand cursedהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineאֶת־דָּוִדet-Da/VIDDavidבֵּאלֹהָיו׃be/lo/HAYVby his gods

    And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

44. 44

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineאֶל־דָּוִדel-Da/VIDto Davidלְכָהle/KHAcomeאֵלַיe/LAYto meוְאֶתְּנָהve/et/te/NAand I will giveאֶת־בְּשָׂרְךָet-be/sa/re/KHAyour fleshלְעוֹףle/OFto the birds ofהַשָּׁמַיִםhash/sha/MA/yimthe heavensוּלְבֶהֱמַתu/le/ve/he/MATand to the beasts ofהַשָּׂדֶה׃has/sa/DEthe field

    And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

45. 45

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶל־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּיel-Hap/pe/lish/TIto the Philistineאַתָּהat/TAyouבָּאbacomeאֵלַיe/LAYto meבְּחֶרֶבbe/CHE/revwith swordוּבַחֲנִיתu/va/cha/NITand with spearוּבְכִידוֹןu/ve/khi/DONand with javelinוְאָנֹכִיve/a/no/KHIbut Iבָא־אֵלֶיךָva-e/LE/khacome to youבְּשֵׁםbe/SHEMin the name ofיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDצְבָאוֹתtse/va/OTof hostsאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe God ofמַעַרְכוֹתma/ar/KHOTthe ranks ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomחֵרַפְתָּ׃che/RAF/tayou have defied

    Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

46. 46

    הַיּוֹםhay/YOMdayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisיְסַגֶּרְךָye/sag/ger/KHAwill deliver youיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDבְּיָדִיbe/ya/DIinto my handוְהִכִּיתִךָve/hik/ki/TI/khaand I will strike youוַהֲסִרֹתִיva/ha/si/ro/TIand removeאֶת־רֹאשְׁךָet-ro/she/KHAyour headמֵעָלֶיךָme/a/LE/khafrom youוְנָתַתִּיve/na/tat/TIand I will giveפֶּגֶרPE/gerthe corpses ofמַחֲנֵהma/cha/NEthe camp ofפְלִשְׁתִּיםFe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesהַיּוֹםhay/YOMdayהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisלְעוֹףle/OFto the birds ofהַשָּׁמַיִםhash/sha/MA/yimthe heavensוּלְחַיַּתu/le/chay/YATand to the beasts ofהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe earthוְיֵדְעוּve/yed/Uthat may knowכׇּל־הָאָרֶץkol-ha/A/retsall the earthכִּיkithatיֵשׁyeshthere isאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodלְיִשְׂרָאֵל׃le/Yis/ra/ELin Israel

    This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

47. 47

    וְיֵדְעוּve/yed/Uand may knowכׇּל־הַקָּהָלkol-hak/ka/HALall the assemblyהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notבְּחֶרֶבbe/CHE/revwith swordוּבַחֲנִיתu/va/cha/NITand spearיְהוֹשִׁיעַye/ho/SHI/asavesיְהֹוָהAdonaithe LORDכִּיkiforלַיהֹוָהla-Adonaithe LORD’s isהַמִּלְחָמָהham/mil/cha/MAthe battleוְנָתַןve/na/TANand He will giveאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouבְּיָדֵנוּ׃be/ya/DE/nuinto our hand

    And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.

48. 48

    וְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it came to passכִּי־קָםki-kamwhen aroseהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhand wentוַיִּקְרַבvay/yik/RAVand drew nearלִקְרַאתlik/RATto meetדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidוַיְמַהֵרvay/ma/HERthat hastenedדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidוַיָּרׇץvay/YA/rotsand ranהַמַּעֲרָכָהham/ma/a/ra/KHAtoward the battle lineלִקְרַאתlik/RATto meetהַפְּלִשְׁתִּי׃hap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistine

    And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

49. 49

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand putדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶת־יָדוֹet-ya/DOhis handאֶל־הַכֶּלִיel-hak/KE/liinto the bagוַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookמִשָּׁםmish/SHAMfrom thereאֶבֶןE/vena stoneוַיְקַלַּעvay/kal/LAand slung itוַיַּךְvay/YAKHand struckאֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּיet-Hap/pe/lish/TIthe Philistineאֶל־מִצְחוֹel-mits/CHOin his foreheadוַתִּטְבַּעvat/tit/BAand sankהָאֶבֶןha/E/venthe stoneבְּמִצְחוֹbe/mits/CHOin his foreheadוַיִּפֹּלvay/yip/POLand fellעַל־פָּנָיוal-pa/NAYVon his faceאָרְצָה׃AR/tsato the ground

    And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

50. 50

    וַיֶּחֱזַקvay/ye/che/ZAKso prevailedדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidמִן־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּיmin-Hap/pe/lish/TIover the Philistineבַּקֶּלַעbak/KE/lawith the slingוּבָאֶבֶןu/va/E/venand with the stoneוַיַּךְvay/YAKHand struckאֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּיet-Hap/pe/lish/TIthe Philistineוַיְמִתֵהוּvay/mi/TE/huand killed himוְחֶרֶבve/CHE/revbut a swordאֵיןenthere was noneבְּיַד־דָּוִד׃be/YAD-da/VIDin the hand of David

    So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

51. 51

    וַיָּרׇץvay/YA/rotsand ranדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidוַיַּעֲמֹדvay/ya/a/MODand stoodאֶל־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּיel-Hap/pe/lish/TIover the Philistineוַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookאֶת־חַרְבּוֹet-char/BOhis swordוַיִּשְׁלְפָהּvay/yish/le/FAand drew itמִתַּעְרָהּmit/ta/RAout of its sheathוַיְמֹתְתֵהוּvay/mot/TE/huand killed himוַיִּכְרׇת־בָּהּvay/yikh/ROT-baand cut off with itאֶת־רֹאשׁוֹet-ro/SHOhis headוַיִּרְאוּvay/yir/Uand they sawהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיםhap/Pe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesכִּי־מֵתki-metthat was deadגִּבּוֹרָםgib/bo/RAMtheir championוַיָּנֻסוּ׃vay/ya/NU/suand they fled

    Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

52. 52

    וַיָּקֻמוּvay/ya/KU/muand aroseאַנְשֵׁיan/SHEthe men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוִיהוּדָהVi/hu/DAand Judahוַיָּרִעוּvay/ya/RI/uand shoutedוַיִּרְדְּפוּvay/yir/de/FUand pursuedאֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּיםet-Hap/pe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesעַד־בּוֹאֲךָad-bo/a/KHAas far asגַיְאgaythe valleyוְעַדve/ADand toשַׁעֲרֵיsha/a/REthe gates ofעֶקְרוֹןEk/RONEkronוַיִּפְּלוּvay/yip/pe/LUand they fellחַלְלֵיchal/LEthe slain ofפְלִשְׁתִּיםFe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesבְּדֶרֶךְbe/DE/rekhalong the way ofשַׁעֲרַיִםSha/a/RA/yimShaaraimוְעַד־גַּתve/AD-gateven to Gathוְעַד־עֶקְרוֹן׃ve/AD-ek/RONand to Ekron

    And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

53. 53

    וַיָּשֻׁבוּvay/ya/SHU/vuand they returnedבְּנֵיbe/NEthe children ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelמִדְּלֹקmid/de/LOKfrom hotly pursuingאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterפְלִשְׁתִּיםFe/lish/TIMthe Philistinesוַיָּשֹׁסּוּvay/ya/SHOS/suand plunderedאֶת־מַחֲנֵיהֶם׃et-ma/cha/ne/HEMtheir camps

    And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.

54. 54

    וַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidאֶת־רֹאשׁet-roshthe head ofהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineוַיְבִאֵהוּvay/vi/E/huand brought itיְרוּשָׁלָ͏ִםYe/ru/sha/LA/yimJerusalemוְאֶת־כֵּלָיוve/ET-ke/LAYVbut his weaponsשָׂםsamhe putבְּאׇהֳלוֹ׃be/o/ho/LOin his tent

    And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

55. 55

    וְכִרְאוֹתve/khir/OTand when sawשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulאֶת־דָּוִדet-Da/VIDDavidיֹצֵאyo/TSEgoing outלִקְרַאתlik/RATto meetהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineאָמַרa/MARhe saidאֶל־אַבְנֵרel-Av/NERto Abnerשַׂרsarthe commander ofהַצָּבָאhats/tsa/VAthe armyבֶּן־מִי־זֶהben-mi-zewhose son is thisהַנַּעַרhan/NA/aryouthאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerחֵי־נַפְשְׁךָche-naf/she/KHAas your soul livesהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhO kingאִם־יָדָעְתִּי׃im-ya/DA/tiI do not know

    And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

56. 56

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingשְׁאַלshe/ALinquireאַתָּהat/TAyouבֶּן־מִי־זֶהben-mi-zewhose sonהָעָלֶם׃ha/A/lemthe young man is

    And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.

57. 57

    וּכְשׁוּבu/khe/SHUVand when returnedדָּוִדDa/VIDDavidמֵהַכּוֹתme/hak/KOTfrom striking downאֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּיet-Hap/pe/lish/TIthe Philistineוַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookאֹתוֹo/TOhimאַבְנֵרAv/NERAbnerוַיְבִאֵהוּvay/vi/E/huand brought himלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeשָׁאוּלSha/ULSaulוְרֹאשׁve/ROSHand the head ofהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיhap/Pe/lish/TIthe Philistineבְּיָדוֹ׃be/ya/DOin his hand

    And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

58. 58
